        Le Tumulte Noir.

Paris Editions d'Art 1927 - First edition. Folio (49.5 x 33 cm), edition limited to 540 copies of which this is one of 500 on papier Velin, 43 full-page original lithographs by Colin on 22 sheets, including 1 double-page, hand-coloured in pochoir by Jean Saudé, loose as issued in original cream and red stiff card portfolio, lettered in red and black, a fine copy kept in a modern solander cloth box. Spectacular scenes from the Jazz Age. Le Tumulte Noir was designed for and sold at the Bal Negre, a special, one-night event, which was Colin's brainchild and tribute to the "black craze" of Paris. The album is divided into two parts, the first one is dedicated to Josephine Baker and the black musicians and dances. Exquisitely stylized, it is Paul Colin at his very best. The second part is a satire of Paris under the spell of the Charleston rage. Following in the steps of Sem, Colin is cartooning in funny and sometimes cruel satire, the Parisian music hall stars of the moment: Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Cecile Sorel, the Dolly Sisters, as well as the chansonniers Rip and Saint-Granier, a cubist Jean Borlin of the Ballet Suedois, and the tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen. Paul Colin (1892 -1985) was one of France's greatest poster artists. Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art déco at the outset, (Le Tumulte noir is a masterpiece of the genre), his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. The lithographs are vividly coloured by Jean Saudé, who is regarded as the leading exponent of pochoir, a printing technique in which each colour is applied through a separate stencil. His prints have a vibrancy of colour that has rarely been equalled. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The First Part and the Second Part of the History of the Valorous and Wittie Knight-Errant Don-Quixote of the Mancha. Translated out of the Spanish by Thomas Shelton MDCXII.

Chelsea: Chelsea, The Ashendene Press, 1927–28 - 2 large folio volumes (430 × 308 mm). Publisher's full green morocco, spine in compartments with gilt titles direct. Nicks to bands and corners, but a lovely set, internally fine and in excellent condition. Printed in red and black in Ptolemy type; text in double columns; border and initials designed by Louise Powell and cut on wood by W. M. Quick and Geo. H. Ford. First Ashendene edition, one of 225 copies on Batchelor paper, out of a total edition of 245 copies. "First appearance of Ptolemy type. Ashendene knight-in-armour paper taken as a single work Don-Quixote is the largest of the Ashendene books. It has an interesting alternative to Hewitt's drawn or printed initials, the successful but unrepeatable device of neo-Kelmscott initials, borders and opening words cut on wood from designs by Louise Powell. The new Ashendene type was imitated and adapted from the Geographia of Ptolemaeus, printed by Leonard Holle at Ulm in 1482. In two columns, with red used chiefly for headings and shoulder notes, decorated but not illustrated, this link with the Kelmscott past was an entirely successful venture" (Franklin, The Ashendene Press).         Die Baukunst der neuesten Zeit [Gebundene Ausgabe] Gustav Adolf Platz (Autor) Edition Ars et Architectura

Mann (Gebr.), Berlin, 1927. Trud, Kharkiv 1927 - 93, [2] pp. 17x12,5 cm. In original publisher's wrappers. Lower part of the spine chipped, some stains on the front cover, Soviet bookshops' stamps on the back cover, tiny owner's label with number on the inner part of the front cover. Otherwise a near fine clean copy.1 of 3000 copies. First Russian edition. Originally articles'Bibliothekarische Reiseeindrücke aus Amerika'by H. Escherwere published in 1920-1923 (Zurich). Russian publisher made quite a few shortenings because original works were printed in magazines as impressions and memories - such format didn't meet the requirements. In editor's opinion it didn't affect the essence of the subject. The goal for this edition was set to introduce Russian reader to all innovations in modern American librarianship which within known limits can be brought to Soviet practice. This edition contents articles onLibrarianship, Special libraries,How American public libraries reach out to readers, Library and School, The State and Providing Country with books et al. WorldCat locates two copies (Japan and Germany). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
