        Le Tumulte Noir.

Paris Editions d'Art 1927 - First edition. Folio (49.5 x 33 cm), edition limited to 540 copies of which this is one of 500 on papier Velin, 43 full-page original lithographs by Colin on 22 sheets, including 1 double-page, hand-coloured in pochoir by Jean Saudé, loose as issued in original cream and red stiff card portfolio, lettered in red and black, a fine copy kept in a modern solander cloth box. Spectacular scenes from the Jazz Age. Le Tumulte Noir was designed for and sold at the Bal Negre, a special, one-night event, which was Colin's brainchild and tribute to the "black craze" of Paris. The album is divided into two parts, the first one is dedicated to Josephine Baker and the black musicians and dances. Exquisitely stylized, it is Paul Colin at his very best. The second part is a satire of Paris under the spell of the Charleston rage. Following in the steps of Sem, Colin is cartooning in funny and sometimes cruel satire, the Parisian music hall stars of the moment: Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Cecile Sorel, the Dolly Sisters, as well as the chansonniers Rip and Saint-Granier, a cubist Jean Borlin of the Ballet Suedois, and the tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen. Paul Colin (1892 -1985) was one of France's greatest poster artists. Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art déco at the outset, (Le Tumulte noir is a masterpiece of the genre), his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. The lithographs are vividly coloured by Jean Saudé, who is regarded as the leading exponent of pochoir, a printing technique in which each colour is applied through a separate stencil. His prints have a vibrancy of colour that has rarely been equalled. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Near Fine, scant rubbing to cloth at the tips, a very few spots of foxing to end pages. Originally published by Shakespeare in February, 1922. The Eighth Printing was published in 1926, when the type was entirely re-set to correct the legion of typographic errors in the harried first printing that had carried through all the previous printings, thus basically making the 8th printing the 2nd Shakespeare edition, and the 9th, its 2nd printing.[ technically the Egoist Press 2nd Printing was the true 2nd Edition.} Regardless of the tortuous publication history, one of the classic works in literature. .         [EXTENSIVE PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION OF THE FIRST UNITED STATES AIRCRAFT CARRIER, THE U.S.S. LANGLEY, 1919-1927]

[Various places, including Panama, Haiti, Hawaii, and California, 1927. 352 silver gelatin photographs, various sizes, plus pamphlet and military leave pass laid in. Two photograph albums. Contemporary black leather and cloth, with a few small chips and light corner wear. Black paper supports, most photos loose in corner mounts. Some images captioned in the negative. Slight wear to some photos, but overall very good. A remarkable collection of over three hundred and fifty silver gelatin photographs tracing the history of the first United States aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Langley, from its origin as the collier U.S.S. Jupiter, through its voyages and operations in the 1920s. The images were apparently collected by a member of the crew, C.C. Henderson, whose leave pass from the Langley accompanies the albums. Also laid in is a small pamphlet from 1925 entitled "The Zoom," a serial publication of the naval aircraft squadrons at Pearl Harbor, with a picture of U.S.S. Langley on its front page. The initial photos document a journey of the U.S.S. Jupiter through the Panama Canal. In 1920, the collier was converted, with a landing deck being fitted atop the original boat structure. Thereafter, the ship sailed on operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, passing through Canal on a number of occasions. It first went to Haiti, but then joined the Pacific Battle Fleet, and spent significant time at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and at several ports in California, including San Diego, Mare Island, Monterey, and Los Angeles. The final images show the carrier and its crew making their way east back through the Canal and visiting Panama City. Beyond the interesting views of the places visited by the craft, the most significant photos are the numerous shots of the aircraft carrier, the activities of the officers and crew aboard, its airplanes on deck and in the air, and other naval ships in its battle group. These images constitute a critical record of a pioneering ship in the history of the United States Navy, at a time when the possibilities of a new method of facilitating flight were first being explored. The two albums are a throrough document of the first U.S. aircraft carrier and her early voyages, put together by an obvious participant in events, and one apparently captivated by naval aviation.

The True Historie of Lucian the Samosatenian

The Golden Cockerel Press, Waltham St Lawrence, Berkshire 1927 - 33x23cm, 44pp. With wood engravings by Robert Gibbings printed in black. Copy 151 of 275 with English text printed in Caslon to the centre of each double-page spread and Greek text and engravings flowing around it as a border, on Batchelor handmade paper, quarter bound in tan morocco with five raised bands over oatmeal coarse cloth-covered boards, gilt title to the backstrip, t.e.g., stamped 'BOUND BY SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE' to the front pastedown. One of the most celebrated books from the 'golden era' of the Golden Cockerel Press under Robert Gibbings, and a pre-war English Private Press classic. Each double-page spread is a triumph of typography, combining English and Greek texts with Gibbing's superb images in a most harmonious and imaginative layout. In Roderick Cave and Sarah Manson's view (A History of the Golden Cockerel Press 1920 - 1960, British Library / Oak Knoll Press 2002) the book is 'as fine' as the 'big three' Golden Cockerels (ie The Four Gospels, Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde) and ranks 'amongst the foremost English illustrated books of the twentieth century'. Condition: quarter morocco showing a few small darker patches and spots in places, minor rubbing at head of backstrip, internally fine and crisp with no marks or inscriptions, overall Very Good.         Diffraction of Cathode Rays by a Thin Film" (Thomson, Paget, Reid) in Nature, Vol. 119, No. 3007, June 18, 1927, p. 890 AND "The Diffraction of Cathode Rays by Thin Films of Platinum (Thomson) in Nature, Vol. 120, No. 3031, December 3, 1927, p. 802

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THOMSON & REID'S NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPERS "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize Portal). The experiments conducted here "beautifully confirmed the [de Broglie's] wave theory" (Lindau Nobel Laureate Portal). Sir George Paget Thomson was born in 1892, the son of the physicist Sir J. J. Thomson. Paget Thomson studied at Cambridge's Trinity College, later working for a year studying atomic structure with his father; this was followed by work at Cavendish Laboratory until WWI. Following a post at Cambridge, Paget Thomson became Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen. It is at Aberdeen that Paget Thomson began to carry out experiments revealing the phenomena of electron diffraction with thin metal foils and high-voltage electrons. In 1924, the de Broglie hypothesis argued that a wave must be associated with the motion of any material corpuscle. "Reasoning that the effect would be easier to analyze with a solid than with a gaseous target, Thomson asked one of his students, Alexander Reid, to modify an existing apparatus and investigate the scattering of a beam of electrons with energy in the keV range through this celluloid films at normal incidence" (Lindau). In the first paper offered here (June 1927), Reid and Paget Thomson describe "the rings formed when a beam of cathode rays was sent at normal incidence through a thin film of celluloid and struck a photograph plate placed some distance behind the film. These were attributed to a diffraction of the cathode rays by the film, the cathode rays behaving as waves of wave-length h/mv according to de Broglie's theory of wave mechanics, and regularities in the structure of the film, or in the size of the molecules, making it behave as a kind of diffraction grating" (Abstract). In the paper of 1927 December, Paget Thomson (working alone) confirmed and extended his experimentation "to films of gold, aluminium, and of an unknown (probably organic) substance. In particular, the relation that the size of the rings is in all cases inversely as the momentum of the cathode rays is fully confirmed, and the number and size of the rings correspond remarkably with what is to be expected from the known crystalline structure of gold and aluminium, using de Broglie's expression for the wave- length of the cathode rays" (Abstract)."Whereas his father had seen the electron as a particle (and won his Nobel Prize in the process), Paget Thomson demonstrated that it could be diffracted like a wave, a discovery proving the principle of wave-particle duality which had first been posited by de Broglie in the 1920s as what is often dubbed the de Broglie hypothesis" (Strickland, Creators of Quantum Physics, 180). CONDITION & DETAILS: Two issues in original wraps. London: Macmillan. 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm). Ex-libris with stamps on front wraps; professionally rebacked at the spine (see scan). Slight wear; bright and clean throughout. Both very good condition.

Book label or book stamps of the fine art dealer David Cohen (whose speciality is the art of the Great War). Some spines and periphery of boards lightly sunned. An excellent set, with all of the maps present. First editions throughout with the exception of the first volume of 1914, which is the revised third edition of 1933, all in remarkably good condition. This set carries the armorial book stamps of Bogdan Freiherr von Recum and his pencilled ownership inscriptions. Rudolph Alfred Bogdan Freiherr von Recum (1896-1990) was the son of Rudolph Heinrich Freiherr von Recum and Marie Ernestine Howard, daughter of the widely travelled British diplomat Sir Henry Howard. His brother, Otto, served with the German Navy between 1914 and 1927 and worked with the United States forces at the end of the war (see his New York Times obituary online). Bogdan von Recum, cited as being a major in 1936 at the Dillingen/Donau Riding and Driving School, was sent to the Eastern Front where he arrived just in time to take part in the fierce actions around the Rhzev salient (known as the "Rhzev meat-grinder"), a strategic crossroads and vital rail junction straddling the Volga, where the German army was reeling from Soviet attacks; he saw action on 31 July 1942 with Aufklärungs-Abteilung 328 (a reconnaissance battalion) around the villages of Griborjewo, Gorbowo, Federkowo and Chanino; promoted to oberstleutnant (lieutenant colonel) on 1 August - clearly a field promotion as his command is described as being reduced to just himself and 22 men - his unit was at the forefront of the fierce fighting in the north part of the salient. His contribution to the German defence was a vital one: "Lieutenant Colonel von Recum, the commander of the 251st Division's mobile battalion, took over responsibility for the defence of the bridgehead [across the Volga] from the 87th Infantry Division. His 'mixed hodgepodge of units thrown together as akampfgruppe' included the 187th and 215st Engineer Battalions, the 87th Ski Battalion, the 72 Infantry Division's mobile battalion, the 10th Company of the 129th Infantry Division's 428th Grenadier Regiment, and the 1st Squadron of the 251st Mobile Battalion. This motley force performed superbly, repulsing thirty-seven separate Russian assaults between 9 and 12 December, inflicting heavy losses on the attackers, and unbeknownst to Von Recum, forcing the Soviet commanders to alter their attack plans by shifting their main attack into the 39th Army's sector" (David M. Glantz, Zhukov's Greatest Defeat: The Red Army's Epic Disaster in Operation Mars 1942, 1999 p. 271). He later contributed the section dealing with the Italian Front to the unit history Kampf und Ende der Fränkisch-Sudetendeutschen 98 Infanterie-Division by the unit's commanding officer, Martin Gareis (first published 1956); and corresponded with Liddell Hart about German commanders of the Second World War, material Liddell Hart used in his The Other Side of the Hill (1948), published in the US as The German Generals Talk. His extensive and fastidious pencil annotations in both English and German, provide a sporadic but minutely informed and remarkably detailed commentary on matters ranging from the minutiae of battlefield dispositions to command decisions. He was clearly gathering these volumes as they were published (presumably while he was serving at the Riding and Driving School at Dillingen/Donau), has carefully kept all agenda and corrigenda slips and cut and pasted them in where relevant; there are also cuttings from The Cavalry Journal and a good number of hand-drawn and detailed maps of a number of actions. Certain annotations and sketch maps show that Von Recum was particularly interested in the part played by the cavalry and subsequent developments in tanks and tank tactics (see volume III of 1917 and the section on Cambrai and the British use of the tank). He comments interestingly on Passchendaele and the German breakthrough in 1918 (Operation Michael): "This Note II [1918 I, p. 263] is a collection of material picked out of German books with the intention of maiking [sic] the success of the 21st [of March, the start date of the German Spring Offensive] as bade [sic] as possible" and then "The German higher Commands had learnt that it is wrong to use the reserves against the strongest opposition, but to use them at those parts of the front which gave in first, where the resistance is weak or broken! This was the case on the front of the British III Corps. Through this new lesson plans can only be followed as long as success is with these troops. War is not a series? of rigid principles"; the latter a reference to the new German tactical innovations of 1918 and the use of stormtroopers (or stosstruppen). We have not been able to ascertain whether von Recum served during the Great War but is more than likely given his age and later military service. A fascinating set that would bear closer research.

Book itself is Near Fine, clean, tight with some light shelf-wear some areas of darkening particularly at the spine extremities. Unclipped original wrapper with some occasional minuscule flaking.         Petits et Grands Verres. Choix des meilleures recettes de Cocktails

Paris: Au sans Pareil, 1927. Small quarto, 131, [2] pages. (24x18.5cm). First trade edition. A translation, by the artist, of Toye and Adair's, Drinks: Long & Short, originally issued in London in 1925. Much more than a translation, this beautiful re-imagining of the book, by one of France's most prolific and imaginative printmakers. In a custom binding, unsigned, with an original drawing for the design of the binding used as an endpaper. The binding is quarter black morocco, gilt-titled and decorated with ornaments in the shape of bunches of grapes. Some light foxing throughout. Original pochoir deco wrappers bound-in. The owner of the book, W.P. Dudley of Chicago, was a fixture on the Palm Beach social circuit, arriving for the opening of The Breakers. His name is gilt-stamped on the front board. Throughout the book, Dudley has seen fit to comment in pencil, correcting recipes he views as errant, and criticizing or praising cocktails as he sees fit. Some of his commentary is detailed, and some is simple, as is the case with the neatly "x"-ed out section of Whisky Cocktails. Did he dislike whisky, or just think mixing it is inappropriate? My money is on the later.

Explorer and Fur-trader he wasborn at Three Rivers, Canada, on November 17, 1685, the son of Ren‚Gaultier de Varennes, Governor of Three Rivers. He entered the Frencharmy, and after serving in Canada and in Newfoundland took part in thecampaigns in Flanders. He was severely wounded at the battle ofMalplaquet in 1709; and shortly afterwards returned to Canada. He thenengaged in the fur-trade, first at St. Maurice and later at Lake Nipigon. Here he conceived the idea of pushing westward in search of the WesternSea. He left Montreal for the West in 1731, and in the succeeding yearshe built a chain of fur-trading posts at Rainy Lake, at the Lake of theWoods, at Lake Winnipeg, at the Red River, and on the Assiniboine River. In 1738 he visited the Mandan villages on the Missouri. In 1742 two ofhis sons penetrated far to the south-west, and possibly reached thefoothills of the Rocky Mountains. His operations, however, were notsuccessful from a financial point of view; and in 1743, broken in healthand burdened with debt, he was compelled to return to Montreal to facethe creditors. He died in Montreal on December 5, 1749. In September,1749, he received a belated acknowledgment of his services, was createda Chevalier of St. Louis, and was promoted to the rank of a captain inthe Marine troops. (Wallace/McKay. D.C.B.). Map cases: 1914: 2; 1915: 2; 1916: 1; 1917: 1; 1918: 2. Original red cloth, gilt lettered spines. Book label or book stamps of the fine art dealer David Cohen (whose speciality is the art of the Great War). Some spines and periphery of boards lightly sunned. An excellent set, with all of the maps present. Numerous maps and plans. (4) Oblong string-tied album, 13.25” x 10.25” approx. Brown imitation leather with “Photographs” printed at front cover. 252 photographs of various snapshot sizes, a handful larger, mounted recto and verso to 36 leaves plus leaf of photo-strips with a total of 50 images. Most photos with holograph captions from Oahu, New Guinea, and various locations throughout the Philippines. Dated 1945. Album suffers some edge-wear, front joint starting. Several pages disbound. Some photographs dismounted, most generally fine. (5) Oblong string-tied commercial album measuring 13.25” x 10” approx. Imitation leather embossed with a horse bust design and “Photographs” at front cover. Hand-lettered title page “Nanking China/Nov. 9th 1945/ to/ Feb. 12th 1946”. One photo measuring 2.75” x 4” approx. and 290 B&W photographs measuring 2.25” x 1.75” approx. corner-mounted to 14 leaves recto and verso, most with hand-written captions. Photographs depict scenes from an airfield, the city of Nanking (Nanjing,) Shanghai, aboard the transport ship USS General Scott, arrival in Seattle, train journey, domestic family scenes and a welcoming parade in Buffalo, NY. Laid in are four photographs of various sizes from 2.5” x 2.5” approx. to 8” x 10” approx. Album lightly edge-worn. Some pages disbound but present. Generally very good. Peter R. Betz (identified by his name and postwar address in the rear of two of the albums) served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific, and his photographs document that theater and the Philippines Campaign in detail. Nearly every photograph features Betz’s neat, holograph captions, and the albums in general are highly organized, making for an incredibly thorough photographic biography of a soldier. The earliest photographs are dated 1927 and feature images of a Boy Scout troop and camping trip. Two of the albums also contain several images of the Betz’s family, including parents, siblings, and cousins. Many of these family portraits are hand tinted. Betz’s documentation of his Army career begins in 1937 and ‘38, with his service in Hawaii and Panama. The photographs regarding this time are casual and candid: soldiers relaxing in barracks and off-base in Honolulu and Waikiki beach, hiking trips in the mountains of Hawaii, native Hawaiians in traditional dress, a visit from President Roosevelt, as well as (separately) from Gracie Allen and George Burns. And photographs of the Panama Canal lock system in action reveal a keen interest in mechanics and engineering. Wartime photographs are contained primarily in two albums. The first, titled “G.I. Memories, Feb. 6, 1942 - Nov. 17, 1945” (above) features over 200 images. These include stateside images of Camp Croft and Sand Hill, SC. A second deployment to Hawaii also features heavily, including many of the same kinds of images as appeared earlier. The album contains a notable series of 28 photographs taken in New Guinea, identified by Betz as “Native dance...started Friday thru Sunday night.” 47 photos from December 1944 to January 1945 in Leyte, Philippines show US Army barracks and soldiers, native Filipinos (mostly children), countryside, numerous aircraft and ships, and the aftermath of one or more unidentified battles (as left). The second album focuses almost entirely on operations in the Philippines. These include eighteen photographs, with aerial shots, labeled “Air Drop,” eleven photographs “taken from” and of Japanese soldiers, and six showing a Japanese surrender on an unidentified airfield. Most importantly, however, over 60 photos that trace the U.S. effort to retake islands from the Japanese, including the January 29, 1945 beach landing at San Narciso, which marked the beginning of the Battle of Bataan. Also noteworthy: Mariveles and the aftermath of fighting in Zig Zag Pass, preparing for the detonation of Fort Drum in Manila Bay on April 12, 1945, followed by images of a beach landing on and aerial shots of Carabao Island on April 16. Additionally: 100 photos, dated January-October 1946, of Luzon after the liberation of the island. The photographs show soldiers and native Filipinos, including Negrito resistance fighters armed with bow and arrow, as well as villages and buildings, many showing the effects of the war. A final album documents, in over 200 images, Betz’s experience immediately after the end of hostilities, where he served out his enlistment in Nanking and Shanghai, China. Dated Now. 9, 1945 - Feb. 12, 1946, these photographs show various aspects of the city, soldiers, and people, as well as US and Japanese planes, ships, and like. The album concludes with photographs taken from the deck of the USS General Scott during Betz’s return voyage to the United States. Betz was a serious student of photography, and his images demonstrate a keen eye for framing and documentary. As comprehensive an archive of a soldier’s WWII service as we’ve encountered. While vernacular albums from this era do turn up, we aren’t aware of any as large, or as comprehensively-captioned, that focuses on a single person as this one. Indeed, both circumstances of life in the Pacific theater, as well as formal censorship policies and security restrictions made assembling such a large collection extraordinarily difficult. A rare, compelling, and significant collection.
