The Family History of England: Civil, Military, Social, Commercial & Religious From the Earliest Period th the Passing of the Reform Bill, 1867.

6 volumes. 19 cm x 27 cm. II, 402 pages, LXIV / V, 336 pages, LX / VII, 360 pages, XL / VI, 336 pages / VIII, 400 pages / VIII, 344 pages, LVI. Original Hardcover. The covers of these books are frayed and worn by age. Otherwise very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Illustrated with maps, portraits, views and other engravings. Rare to get all six volumes together. England became inhabited more than 800,000 years ago, as the discovery of flint tools and footprints at Happisburgh in Norfolk has revealed. The earliest evidence for early modern humans in North West Europe, a jawbone discovered in Devon at Kents Cavern in 1927, was re-dated in 2011 to between 41,000 and 44,000 years old. Continuous human habitation in England dates to around 13,000 years ago (see Creswellian), at the end of the last glacial period. The region has numerous remains from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age, such as Stonehenge and Avebury. In the Iron Age, England, like all of Britain south of the Firth of Forth, was inhabited by the Celtic people known as the Britons, including some Belgic tribes (e.g. the Atrebates, the Catuvellauni, the Trinovantes, etc.) in the south east. In AD 43 the Roman conquest of Britain began the Romans maintained control of their province of Britannia until the early 5th century. The end of Roman rule in Britain facilitated the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, which historians often regard as the origin of England and of the English people. The Anglo-Saxons, a collection of various Germanic peoples, established several kingdoms that became the primary powers in present-day England and parts of southern Scotland. They introduced the Old English language, which largely displaced the previous British language. The Anglo-Saxons warred with British successor states in Wales, Cornwall, and the Hen Ogledd (Old North the Brythonic-speaking parts of northern England and southern Scotland), as well as with each other. Raids by Vikings became frequent after about AD 800, and the Norsemen settled in large parts of what is now England. During this period, several rulers attempted to unite the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, an effort that led to the emergence of the Kingdom of England by the 10th century. Under the Tudors and the later Stuart dynasty, England became a world colonial power. During the rule of the Stuarts, the English Civil War took place between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists, which resulted in the execution of King Charles I (1649) and the establishment of a series of republican governments first, a Parliamentary republic known as the Commonwealth of England (1649-1653), then a military dictatorship under Oliver Cromwell known as The Protectorate (1653-1659). The Stuarts returned to the restored throne in 1660, though continued questions over religion and power resulted in the deposition of another Stuart king, James II, in the Glorious Revolution (1688). England, which had conquered Wales in the 13th century, united with Scotland in 1707 to form a new sovereign state called Great Britain. Following the Industrial Revolution, Great Britain ruled a worldwide Empire, the largest in recorded history. Following a process of decolonisation in the 20th century, mainly caused by the weakening of Great Britain's power in the two World Wars, almost all of the empire's overseas territories became independent countries. However, as of 2017, its cultural impact remains widespread and deep in many of them. (Wikipedia).

Chamber Music (Joyce's First Book - Signed Association Copy from Fugitive Poet Merrill Moore to Original Organizer of the Fugitive Poet Meetings, Sidney M. Hirsch)

Jonathan Cape, London 1927 - 5 1/4 X 8 Inches. 40 PP. One of only 393 copies published by Cape. This is technically the fourth edition of James Joyce's first book. Each of the original three editions were published with similar limitations, so locating any of these early printings has become quite difficult. This particular copy bears an important association related to the Southern Fugitive and Agrarian Poet movement of the early 20th Century. Signed, "For Sidney Mitron Hirsh, with admiration and esteem - Merrill Moore, London. Sept. 4, 1928." Moore attended Montgomery Bell Academy and went on to Vanderbilt University in 1920. It was at this time that he joined in with the Fugitive Poets that included the likes of John Crowe Ransom and Robert Penn Warren. For a number of years, the "Fugitives" met on a bi-weekly basis at the home of local poet and eccentric character, Sidney Hirsch. These informal meetings at Hirsch's residence brought about monumental work from Allen Tate, Ransom, Penn Warren and Donald Davidson among others. This particular book not only represents the sharing of literary gold among the members of the Fugitive group, it is a tangible piece from the collection of the man who put the proverbial and literal "roof over the head" of the group.Original blue cloth boards. Slight toning to interior pages and a few dog-eared corners. Name and title embossed in gold gilt on the spine. Lacks DJ. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, , 1927. With a Foreword by Major W. G. Kilner. Quarto. Original olive green cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. 29 monochrome plates. Price-clipped jacket toned and torn (with some loss), gilt rubbed from spine, otherwise a very good copy. Revised US edition, third printing, of one of the earliest books on aerobatics, originally published in 1918; copies in the dust jacket are most uncommon. Captain Horatio Butler (1875-1964) was an aviation pioneer and flight instructor. In 1911 he flew the first cargo flight in Britain, transporting electric light bulbs from Shoreham to Hove, a distance of five and a half miles. He was also the first person in Great Britain to gain an aeronautical degree. This copy has an appealing and evocative provenance, bearing the neat ownership inscription (dated 1927) and book label of Ernest L. Zastrow (b. 1897), a Wisconsin resident who flew with 353rd Aero Squadron in France during the Great War; the endpapers have pasted to them a number of clippings from aviation magazines.

Persimfans: Zhurnal Pervogo simfonicheskogo ansamblia Mossoveta, zasluzhennogo kollektiva Respubliki [Persimfans: journal of the first symphonic ensemble of the Moscow administration and honored collective of the Republic]. Vol. I, nos. 2, 8, 11 (1927-1928) and vol. II, nos. 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 13 (1928-1929). Also included are three earlier program leaflets, for January 24-31, February 4-7, and April 11-18, 1927.

Moscow: Pravlenie Persimfansa 1927 - [The World’s First Conductor-Less Orchestra]. Large octavos and quartos (ca. 26 × 17 to 29 × 20.5 cm). Stapled decorative wrappers; 8 to 16 pp. Numerous photographs. Very good copies; one issue with horizontal crease; occasional very light soil. A sizeable run of this scarce journal published by the first orchestra to play entirely without a conductor, known by the acronym Persimfans (Pervyi simfonicheskii ansambl’, or First symphonic ensemble). As Richard Stites notes in his thorough discussion of the phenomenon, the orchestra’s “ten year existence, 1922-32, was an example of continued belief in unalienated labor, equality, anti-authoritarianism, and—in its date of termination—of the ultimate fate of these things under Stalin. Persimfans and its seventy musicians was a utopia in miniature, a tiny republic, and a model workshop for the communist future” (Revolutionary Dreams, 1991, pp. 135-40). The group grew out of the attempts to create a revolutionary sound, inspired by avant-garde and egalitarian approaches to musical performances throughout the 1910s and early 1920s. As reported in these journals, Persimfans held some of the very first performances in factories, a break with the bourgeois tradition of concert hall performances; their working method, in which precision, efficiency, and independent labor played key roles, likewise paralleled the organization of factory work. Other locations included caserns and workers’ clubs. The performances drew both on classics and on contemporary music and the journal details the orchestra’s varied repertory. Persimfans was instrumental in inviting Prokof’ev back to Russia after his exile; he performed numerous concerts with the orchestra in early 1928, which are described at length in the journal. In addition to concert reports and announcements, it contains biographical articles on composers and performers, as well as reviews by foreign critics. The publication appeared from 1926-29, apparently first as a series of simpler program announcements, and, beginning in 1927, a sequentially numbered, more substantial periodical. As Stites implies, the very notion of a conductorless, egalitarian orchestra would have jarred with Stalin’s vision for a more rigidly controlled Soviet society in the early 1930s. As many powerful supporters, such as Education Commissar Anatoly Lunacharsky, were gradually deposed, the orchestra’s fate was sealed and by 1932 it dissolved. Printed in a small print run for the time, between 2500 and later only 1200 copies. It is likely, moreover, that such materials would have been removed from circulation beginning in the late 1930s, judging from the fate of similar Soviet avant-garde musical experiments of the early 1920s. KVK, OCLC show original issues only at Boston College (microfilm copies are held by the British Library, NYPL, and UC Berkeley). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Thirty-Four Decorative Designs.

Privately printed,, [1927]. With a Preface by Evelyn St. John Waugh. Folio. Original marbled paper covered boards with one of the Crease designs stamped on the front board. Pictorial title page plus 33 further Beardsley-esque designs by Francis Crease. A near fine copy with just a trace of wear to the spine ends. First edition, sole printing, limited to sixty copies "for private circulation". Francis Crease was a master at Lancing whilst Waugh was there and taught him calligraphy and graphic design. Waugh called him "one of two characters who were equal and opposite influences on my adolescence... a secret man" (A Little Learning). He also had some regard for Crease as an artist as a letter to Dudley Carew of 1922 attests, "a wider outlook has given me a far larger realisation of Crease's designs. I am convinced now that that man is a great artist. Before I hung my admiration on his character & did not understand his work fully. It is really great Carey. I am now convinced of that." Although Waugh's contribution is merely listed as a preface, it is the sole text of the book, thus staking a claim to be considered his second published work (after PRB) and preceding all of his fiction.

Minor small mark to the upper front cover near the front hinge. Light toning to the text block and page edges. Mild offsetting to the end papers. Gilt tilting remains bright. Tape remnant stains to the verso which do not show through to the front. Minor professional Japanese tissue repairs to a few closed tears to the verso. The period wrapper design remains very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The wrapper design is not attributed to anyone. According to Woolmer :' Printed October 1927 at 7s6d; 1000 copies printed: 510 copies pulped'. Clifford Henry Benn Kitchin (17 October 1895 – 4 April 1967) was a British novelist of the early twentieth century. He was best known for his four mystery novels featuring the sleuth Malcolm Warren ('Death of My Aunt', 'Crime at Christmas', 'Death of His Uncle', and 'The Cornish Fox'), but his other novels were also highly regarded, especially by other writers. His best-known novels are 'The Auction Sale', 'Streamers Waving', and 'Mr. Balcony'. He was one of Francis King's two mentors, the other being J. R. Ackerley. Kitchin attended Exeter College Oxford and became a barrister. He was a gifted chess player, bridge player and pianist. Kitchin led a varied and colourful life. He was born into wealth and increased his wealth through investment in the stock market. He used his wealth to take part in many different fields, including the breeding and racing of greyhounds, in which he was briefly an important figure. He lived with his lover Clive Preen until Preen's death in 1944. A very scarce early Hogarth Press title and at the time of listing the only available copy on the market. There have been no copies at auction with a wrapper in the last 10 years. Collectible. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
