Professionally rebacked in matching cloth with original backstrip with title and imprint laid on, corners slightly worn with cardboard showing at tips, tiny chip to edge of mounted colour plate, hardly noticeable, a little pale staining to cream area at top of upper cover, large pale stain to upper corner of lower cover, also showing on both pastedowns, occasional pale fingermark to margins, occasional tiny pale spot, 5 very small closed edge tears expertly repaired, contents very nice and bright. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce early Rupert. This is the first book of six in the series known as the Rupert Little Bear series. It was first published in 1925 in the same format but with pictorial endpapers. All titles in the series are very scarce, both firsts and reprints. The beautifully produced children's book is the Hebrew language translation of "Der Vogel Wandelbar" by German poet Richard Dehmel, originally published in 1923. The book is illustrated with seven gorgeous full-page color lithographs (+ cover image) by J. Gleitsmann. The poem uses the image of the bird metaphorically to describe the trials and tribulations of growing up and being handicapped. Text in Hebrew. Binding with some staining to front and back, with a 3 x 1/2" stain to upper left corner of front cover, and a 1 1/2 x 1/2" stain to upper right corner of back cover. Corners lightly rubbed. Minor water stains to front lithograph, else fine. Crease to upper right corner of front cover. Interior with some minor smudges. Binding in overall good-, interior in very good condition.         The Ordinance of The Most Select Excellent and Dauntless Company of Archers

      Kibbo Kift, London 1927 - Twelve pages of original typed corrected and with red underlining of the Kibbo Kift Archers led by accomplished archer raymond Dixon, Deputy Head Man. The organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest in the Kindred and it has been suggested that Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover is based on an archetypal Kinsman. Third and most complete edition, limited to 1600 copies, with 10 extra illustrations not included in the two first printings. 22 full page and double-page illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley including the fine frontispiece, the Merlin drawing and the design for the original cover, also with numerous designs and illustrations throughout the text, as well as a profusion of decorated initials and chapter headings. Thick, large 4to, publisher’s original black polished cloth with spine and covers beautifully and fully decorated in gilt after designs by Beardsley. lv, 538 pp. A very handsome, superior copy, beautifully preserved, the cloth bright with strong gilt and no fading. The textblock very clean and crisp, the hinges tight and strong, corners sharp, only the most minute bit of age evidence along the tips or extremities. AN IMPORTANT PRINTING OF THIS VERY BEAUTIFUL BOOK, and this a very desirable and strong copy. The third edition contains an extra 10 illustrations added in the text, the first edition to do so, as well as the original binding design (which was never used) and a full size facsimile of the Merlin drawing, previously used on a smaller scale. The text is that of Caxton’s printed for the first time in 1485 at Westminster in London. This book represents Aubrey Beardsley's first commissioned work, undertaken when he was not yet twenty. While working at an insurance office in London, Beardsley frequently visited the Jones and Evans bookshop in Cheapside, where he got to know Frederick Evans. Mr. Evans allowed the artist to trade drawings for books on occasion, and it was Evans who suggested to J. M. Dent that Beardsley should be the artist for Mr. Dent's new edition of the Arthurian tales. A suggestion well made and one to which 20th century printing owes much. The commission, which came in 1892 was to “design and illustrate an ambitious edition of Malory’s ‘Le Morte d’Arthur’ which was intended to rival the Kelmscott Press books on their own ground...(E)lements beside the pale remnants of Pre-Raphaelitism were at work fertilizing (Beardsley’s) developing talent, and what was seen by its devisers as an emulation of Morris and Burne-Jones turned out in the execution more like a parody of them--a parody which annoyed Morris to the point at which he contemplated legal action. It may well not have been a deliberate parody: it is simply that already, willy-nilly, the ‘strong medieval decorative feeling’ of Morris was mixed, as Walter Crane noted, ‘with a curious weird Japanese-like spirit of diablerie and grotesque, as of an opium dream’.” Beardsley’s life was short, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 26. In those few years he managed however to leave a great and lasting artistic legacy and a fascinating personal history as well.

Spines a little sunned, very light rubbing to the corners, a truly excellent set. First editions, all published, with the scarce first number in the first issue, in exquisite condition, and uncut. This is a compelling association set; the fourth number has the blind stamp "Brunnenburg, Tirolo (Merano), Italia". Brunnenburg castle became the home of Pound's daughter (with the violinist Olga Rudge) Mary de Rachewiltz and her husband the Egyptologist Boris de Rachewiltz. After Pound's return from the United States he stayed with his daughter at Brunnenburg in 1958, and wrote the last 6 of his 116 Cantos there. Pound's modernist literary magazine, Exile, was begun in self-imposed exile, the first number being printed by Darantiere (the printer of Ulysses) and issued by Pound to America and the UK from the European continent. Pound then moved the publication to Chicago, and, for the last number, to New York. The four issues of The Exile include work by Richard Aldington, Ernest Heminway, W. B. Yeats, William Carlos Williams and many others.

Lovely copy (no. 170 of 225) in original binding of 1/4 leather (golden brown) and patterned paper sides by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed on front pastedown). Binding is a bright and clean VG+, no cracking in the joints, no corner bumps, just a couple of tiny wear spots (1/8 of an inch) to the paper corners, gilt titles bright and clear. There are natural (light-dark) variations in the leather, to a pleasing antique appearance. Some old paste residue from a previous owner's bookplate, otherwise no markings. Contents are completely fine and fresh, no foxing. Top edge gilt others deckled. A delightful, fresh, and completely original copy of one of the very best Cockerels.

Slight toning to endpapers. In the original fawn cloth, upper board bordered in gilt, spine with black lettering-piece. Extremely bright and fresh, corners sharp, spine ends puckered, three 2mm foxing spots to closed fore-edge of final pages. In the protected unclipped pictorial dust jacket, printed on cream coated stock: this is slightly toned and handled relative to the book, and there have been a few small internal professional tissue repairs, chiefly to the head of the spine, making good small chips and an adjacent closed tear at the heads of the joints, and another to the top edge of the plain back panel. Dulac's design to the front panel is complete and clean, the spine and back panel are slightly soiled, with light scuffing to the joints. An exceptionally fine copy, with the rare dust jacket.

        Dream's End

Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with front board and spine lettered in gilt in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Meandering labyrinth of a story about a New York advertising executive who leaves his job in the city to write poetry in a hut by the sea. Although entranced by the ocean and the miles of sand and the salt marshes, David finds himself caught in the coils of his attraction to two women: Hilda, "the mate to his flame, the answering spark," but despairing and fragile (and married), and Scarlet, seductive and available (but morally rotten). Hilda's husband is a sadistic libertine whose subtle cruelties are slowly killing his wife; a situation that so unsettles the poet's wits that he falls prey to a heavily symbolic dream obsession. Smith successfully establishes a surreal voice and includes wonderful passages describing the mad moods of the sea and notes and observations about life and the hereafter, all waiting to be discovered sparkling in the sand throughout the story. The ax of a sharp and discerning editor might have turned Smith's efforts into a compelling Gothic romance, but, alas, the story gets lost in a shifting fog of dreams and fantasies, and never emerges fully formed. Dream's End is a radical departure from Thorne Smith's humorous novels, and was, in fact, Smith's first book rejected by publishers until his Topper novels became successful. Fans of Thorne Smith are likely to be intrigued by this book for its Gothic nature and for an unexpected glimpse at a more serious side of the author. Condition: Light rubbing to binding, offsetting toning to end-leaves, small bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown.       1927. Messing-Gedenkplakette zu Lindberghs Flug, ausgegeben von der US-Luftfahrthandelskammer. 89:64 mm. - Programm und Menüfolge für das Festbankett zu Ehren Lindberghs am 16. Juni 1927 im Waldorf-Astoria. 4 SS. Kordelgeheftete Büttenmappe. Folio. - Sitzplatzliste für das anschließende Galadiner. 16 SS. Bedr. OBr. - Tischkeks in rot-weiß-blauer Papierumhüllung und Etikett "À la Lindbergh". Beilagen. Interessante Sammlung von Erinnerungsstücken an das letzte New Yorker Festbankett und Diner zu Ehren des soeben nach Amerika zurückgekehrten Atlantikfliegers, der mit seiner kühnen Alleinüberquerung des Ozeans (20.-21. Mai 1927) über Nacht zum weltbekannten Helden geworden war und eine noch nie dagewesene Welle der Luftfahrtbegeisterung ausgelöst hatte. Am 11. Juni erreichte Lindbergh per Schiff wieder Washington, wo er im Mayflower Hotel von der National Aeronautic Association geehrt wurde, bevor er am 13. Juni in einen triumphalen Einzug in New York hielt und in einer Konfettiparade durch die Fifth Avenue zog. Am 14. ehrte ihn der Bürgermeister bei einem Prachtbankett im Hotel Commodore, am 15. gab es ein Festessen in "Wilfred's Restaurant" in der Wall Street. Am 16. schließlich, am Tag bevor Lindbergh in seine Heimatstadt St. Louis flog und damit seine große Amerikatour begann, nahm Lindbergh aus den Händen des Stifters den mit 25.000 Dollar dotierten "Orteig-Preis" entgegen, den der New Yorker Hotelier Raymond Orteig 1919 für den ersten Nonstopflug zwischen New York und Paris ausgesetzt hatte und der für Lindbergh (wie für andere, weniger Erfolgreiche vor ihm) die treibende Kraft für seine Unternehmung gewesen war. Doch Lindbergh versagte Orteig das Galadiner, auf das dieser jahrelang gehofft hatte: Nur kurz tauchte er zum Tee-Empfang im Hotel Brevoort auf, um das Preisgeld entgegenzunehmen und sich dann mit dem Hinweis auf eine "andere Verpflichtung" wieder von Orteig, Orville Wright und den zahlreichen anderen Würdenträgern zu verabschieden (vgl. Batterby, "On the Town in New York", S. 228). Diese "andere Verpflichtung", die Lindbergh kurioserweise dem Festmahl Orteigs vorzog, war das von der "Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America" veranstaltete "Banquet in Honor of Charles Lindbergh", welches diesen Abend im Waldorf-Astoria Hotel stattfand und von dem die hier vorliegenden Erinnerungsstücke stammen. Die Messing-Gedenkplakette zeigt ein Relief der "Spirit of St. Louis" und Legende "Per Aspera Ad Astra", revers die Legende: "Commemorating First Nonstop New York To Paris Flight By Capt. Charles A. Lindbergh May 20-21, 1927. Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America" (in maßgefertigter Samt-Präsentationsunterlage). Der Tischkeks wiederum, mit allen für Nahrungsmittel in ihrem neunten Jahrzehnt typischen Merkmalen fortgeschrittenen Verfalls (berieben und bestoßen, mit kl. Wurmspuren und Mottenfäden), ist von zeitgenössischer Hand auf der Papierumhüllung als Stück von ebendiesem Festessen bezeichnet. Von derselben Hand ist der im Sitzplan als "Mr. Shults" bezeichnete Name in "Schult" korrigiert - wohl zu identifizieren mit dem Sammler Gustav Schult, der die vier Memorabilien aus dem Waldorf mit nach Hause nahm und aufbewahrte. Auf eine schwedische Heimat des Diner-Gastes Schult weist die Beilage: eine Sammlung von schwedischsprachigen Zeitungsausschnitten aus den 1940er und 50er-Jahren über Lindberghs Pioniertat (zumeist erschienen zum 25-Jahr-Jubiläum der Überquerung) in einer Mappe mit Lindberghs Portrait. - Teils mit schwedischem Sammleretikett des Pehr Ehnemark.
