        A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way

      Washington, DC: Carnegie Institution, 1927. FIRST EDITION, one of only 700 copies, of Barnard's magnificent star atlas, containing the first photographs to show the structure of the Milky Way. Complete with 51 mounted silver prints (as issued) and 50 charts and tables. RARE. "The greatest photographic legacy of Barnard was his magnum opus: A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way... To capture the Milky Way in all its glory, Edward Barnard used the Bruce photographic telescope of the Yerkes Observatory, Chicago. Finance for the telescope had been given to the University of Chicago by Miss Catherine W. Bruce. The Bruce telescope actually consisted of three individual tubes bound rigidly on the same mounting: two photographic telescopes of 10-inch and 6 1/4-inch aperture, and a 5-inch aperture visual telescope used for tracking (guiding) of the stars as the Earth rotates. The great importance of the photographic telescopes lay in their wide-field coverage; the 10-inch had a 50-inch focal length and, to quote Barnard, gave 'exquisite definition' over a field of about 7 degrees (or 14 full moons). The plate-holder for the 10-inch carried glass negative 12 inches square, while that for the 6 1/4-inch carried glass plates measuring 8 x 10 inches."The scale of the photographs secured with the 10-inch was exceptionally well adapted to revealing the structure of the Milky Way; every inch covered just over one degree of sky. George Ellery Hale, director of the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory owned by the Carnegie Institute of Washington, invited Barnard to Mount Wilson in 1905. A generous grant from Mr. J.D. Hooker of Los Angeles allowed Barnard to transport the Bruce telescope to the Mount Wilson site. Barnard secured forty of his fifty photographs for his Atlas, from one of the world's premier observing sites, in a period spanning February to September, 1905..."The Atlas was completed by Edwin Frost, Director of the Yerkes Observatory in Chicago, and by Barnard's niece, Mary Calvert. Barnard had, however, personally examined 35 700 photographic prints to select only the best to feature in his Atlas, of which seven hundred were produced. A few scratches and stray marks of soiling to cloth; a little rubbing to extremities. Offsetting from portrait (as always, even with the tissue guard). An outstanding copy of a book usually found ex-libris and in terrible condition. Very Good.

        Woman and Puppet. A Spanish Romance.

      [New York:] Privately printed for the Pierre Louÿs Society, 1927 - Octavo. Publisher's deluxe blue morocco, spine gilt-tooled in compartments with raised bands and titles direct, both boards bordered with gilt rules and rolls, front board with floral centrepiece designs gilt, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Trivial nicks to ends and corners, a small few others minor scuffs, but a beautiful copy in excellent condition. 10 colour plates, 5 hand-coloured etchings, illustrated chapter headings and title page. First Tice edition, number 23 of 35 deluxe not-for-sale copies especially printed on handmade paper and extra-illustrated with five original hand-coloured dry-point etchings, with the publisher's deluxe blue full morocco binding, and this copy additionally inscribed by the illustrator on the binder's blank "To A. S. Hartridge, Lover of beautiful books, Clara Tice". The whole edition was limited to 1,250 copies, but the ordinary issue was printed on normal paper, with a cloth binding, and lacked the five etchings. Louÿs's Seville romance was first published as La Femme et le Pantin in 1898. Here it is privately printed in an English translation for the Pierre Louÿs Society, which was dedicated to disseminating French literary erotica to a New York audience, and illustrated by notorious New York bohemian artist Clara Tice (1888-1973), aka "the Queen of Greenwich Village". Tice was, according to the New York times, the first woman in New York to bob her hair, in 1908. She began exhibiting her art from 1910 and in 1915 her fame skyrocketed when the Society for the Prevention of Vice attempted to confiscate her works at the bohemian restaurant Polly's. "Tice was apparently so highly regarded and so instantly recognizable as one of those 'queer artists' that her role in the first Greenwich Village Follies was simply to play herself. As 'Clara,' she stepped out onto the stage at the appointed time, outfitted in one of her typically bizarre bohemian ensembles, and conducted a 'quick chalk talk of nudes, bees and butterflies'" (Sawelsan-Gorse). Throughout the 1920s she illustrated for Vanity Fair and other magazine, and illustrated several books such as this with her softly erotic illustrations. The designer of this book, "Harry" Patrick Cunningham, was Tice's lover and nominal (though never actual) "husband". "Several years younger than Tice, he was also an artist - a painter, designer, and plate-maker - but he soon selflessly devoted himself almost exclusively to assisting Clara in the execution of her work. In an early example of career role-reversals, he pulled proofs for her etchings, hand-colored her mezzotints, stretched her canvasses, and organized her work. Since Tice readily admitted that she was not good at cooking, he prepared the meals" (Sawelsan-Gorse). The recipient of this very scarce deluxe issue copy, which is rare signed or inscribed, was a wealthy New York construction magnate, and, evidently, a lover of beautiful books.       Paris: Chez Camille Bloch & Jules Meynial, 1927. Quarto, portrait frontispiece, introduction followed by twenty-five pochoir colour plates, each signed by the artist and mounted on tinted grey Arches paper; fine in polished half-calf with black lettering. A remarkable collection of elegant theatrical costume designs signed by leading French Art Deco designer George Barbier (1882-1932) with a portrait frontispiece of Barbier by his friend and rival Charles Martin. Although primarily a book illustrator, Barbier applied his considerable skill to fabric design, posters, jewellery, wallpapers and commercial wrappings. He rose to prominence on the Parisian scene after his first exhibition of 1911 and worked under the creative direction of Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, issuing a portfolio of designs for Nijinsky in 1913. The designs featured in Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le theatre show Barbier at the height of his artistic career.Limited edition of 260 copies.

Contains 92 maps with index and numerical stiff maroon tabs to fore edges, with corrections up to 1959. Printed on thick paper, slightly wavy, minor soil to top and bottom edges and some finger smudging, but maps in very good condition. Maps printed on both sides, and properties in numerous colors. Insurance maps, cousin to plat maps, show outlines of properties, with changes recorded in pasted-on clippings, giving a history of property ownership and development. Volume I includes the "Golden Triangle" of Downtown Pittsburgh, along with Uptown and part of the Strip District. Oversized book required extra postage, to be calculated upon purchase.

Nach Studium an der Deutschen Universität Prag und in Wien war Funke 1890/1891 Operationszögling bzw. 1891-1895 Assistent an der II. Chirurgischen Universitätsklinik unter Carl Gussenbauer (die dieser als Nachfolger Billroths leitete) sowie 1895-1900 bei diesem als Assistent. 1901 habilitierte sich Funke für Chirurgie und wirkte 1902-1934 als Primararzt an der I. Chirurgischen Abteilung der Krankenanstalt Rudolfstiftung. Beiliegend: Dankgedicht der Absolventen eines Sanitätskurses der zwischen 15. 11. 1939 und 1. 3. 1940 stattgefunden hat. - F. W. Papke war ein bedeutendes Unternehmen in der spezifisch wienerischen Branche der Ledergalanteriewaren und der Kunstbuchbinderei während der k. k. Monarchie. Das Unternehmen befand sich am Mozartplatz (Mozartgasse 4) im 4. Wiener Gemeindebezirk Wieden. Das Unternehmen wurde 1841 gegründet. Im Laufe der Zeit stand es in der ersten Reihe der Firmen dieser Branche. Seine Erzeugnisse erlangten Weltruf und wurden auch weltweit exportiert. Für den persönlichen Gebrauch des Kaisers Franz Joseph stellte Papke unzählige Arbeiten her, die die anerkennende Belobigung des Kaisers fanden. Papke war auch Kammerliefernat von Erzherzog Eugen. Papke wurde auf der Weltausstellung 1873 in Wien prämiert. Er erhielt ein Anerkennungs-Diplom für Verdienste um das Kunstgewerbe, die silberne Medaille bei der Ausstellung 1894 in Paris und bei der Ausstellung in Antwerpen 1894.

In a very good first issue wrapper with some light chipping to the spine tips and some wear to the corners. The House At Pooh Corner - A first edition, first printing published by Methuen in 1928. A very good+ book. No inscriptions. Some light fading to the spine and some light wear to boards. Some off-setting to end-papers. SIGNED by Christopher Milne and dated (15.10.80). In a very good unclipped wrapper with a small chip to the foot of the spine and some light staining here and there to the wrapper. Some wear and a little loss to the corners.Christopher Milne was the inspiration for the character Christopher Robin. Rare signed in this way. Now We Are Six - A first edition, first printing published by Methuen in 1928. A very good book with one name to the head of the endpaper. Some browning to the endpapers. Some rubbing to the edges and spine tips. In a very good+ unclipped wrapper with a small closed tear to the head of the spine, crease to spine and some rubbing to the corners. A very bright and attractive set of the true first printings and scarce as such. Housed in a custom-made clamshell box.

Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Frohlich, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Fritz Rasp, Theodor Loos, Erwin Biswanger, dir: Fritz Lang, UFA. Superb originality highlighted this silent German-Expressionist film. The stunning special effects and design rival any of our state-of-the-art technical achievements of today. The story is set in the future where humans are divided into the two categories: thinkers and workers. Neither group understands the other, nor have a sense of fulfillment. A man, one of the thinkers, dares to venture into the land of the workers; from that time there is great uprising. This father of all science fiction films is presently enjoying a renewed interest. Its design elements continue to be influential to this day, and is considered the apex in silent cinema. A new restoration is bringing back many missing scenes and a new orchestral score, presented at live film festival performances. A really brilliant trade ad from a 1927 Paramount yearbook announcing the film's US-release. Definitely a mini-poster now that the piece has been mounted on linen. All the futuristic and science fiction aspects of the story are presented in this early Art Deco design. FINE.

The play premiered the previous year on 1 November 1926, at the Ohio Theatre, Cleveland, with Ethel Barrymore as Constance Middleton, whose photograph is featured on the frontispiece. The play was first published in the US earlier the same year, and the UK edition consists of the US sheets with a cancel title page; 750 sheets from the US edition were shipped to London in Spetember 1927.       [The New Yorker], [New York] 1927 - First and only edition of E.B. White's first book, a pitch-perfect series of comic advertisements for The New Yorker, published in-house as a giveaway to friends and advertisers of the magazine. Founded in 1925 by Harold Ross and Jane Grant, The New Yorker aimed to be "a reflection in word and picture of metropolitan life," a smart modern magazine "not edited for the old lady in Dubuque." Writing anonymously, young staff writer E.B. White produced a series of short features about an attractive young couple of astonishing stupidity, Sterling Finny and his wife Flora. Deftly parodying the melodramatic "halitosis style" of advertising, in which a seemingly trivial oversight leads to personal disaster, White describes ten scenarios in which Sterling and Flora are saved from social death by a regular reading of The New Yorker. "Perhaps you, too, have failed at a summer colony because you left everything to your gorgeous body. Have you ever been spoken of in whispers as 'the man with a physique only'? Why can't you realize that there is an easy way to avoid all this -- simply by having your copy of The New Yorker sent to your summer address?" Each advertisement is illustrated with a photograph of the striving couple, played by a pair of mannequins that White encountered in Wanamaker's department store. OCLC lists only five copies of this ephemeral production: Yale, Cornell, Virginia, Bryn Mawr, and the Morgan Library. Hall A1. A near-fine copy of a modernist rarity. Colour wood-engraved title-vignette, plates and illustrations by Siméon, wood-engraved tail-pieces each printed in a different colour by Jacques Beltrand. Bound in full vellum, by L.P.Quillet, with hand-painted decorative borders in green, blue, brown and gilt, spine with similar decoration and lettered in red and black with gilt fourishes at the capitals. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original wrappers bound in. Preserved within a vellum-backed card sleeve with vellum yapped edges. Fernand Siméon (1884-1928) was a painter, illustrator and also did fashion illustrations for Gazette du Bon Ton. The colour wood engraving was a medium which Siméon made his special province. One of 130 numbered copies, out of a total edition of 150, on vélin d'Arches, signed by the artist, this copy with an original watercolour mounted as a frontispiece, also signed by the artist, and with an additional suite of the plates and larger illustrations printed in grey bound in at end. Translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. Small quarto, vellum-backed blue-striped paperboards; gilt lettered spine. Volume I with tissue-protected frontis photo of Mann by E. O. Hoppe; volume II with frontis photo of facsimile manuscript page. A good or better set with covers generally worn and spines showing rubbing, soiling and few tears. Still, a presentable set of this scarce issue. .

Further included are three earlier program leaflets, for January 24–31, February 4–7, and April 11–18, 1927, as well as eleven programs for the period from November 1929 to April 1930.

      Moscow: Pravlenie Persimfansa 1927 - [The World’s First Conductor-Less Orchestra]. Large octavos and quartos (ca. 26 × 17 to 29 × 20.5 cm). Stapled decorative wrappers; 8 to 16 pp. Numerous photographs. One issue with horizontal crease; several issues with old holes to left margin; still a very good set. A sizeable run of this scarce journal published by the first orchestra to play entirely without a conductor, known by the acronym Persimfans (Pervyi simfonicheskii ansambl’, or First symphonic ensemble). As Richard Stites notes in his thorough discussion of the phenomenon, the orchestra’s “ten year existence, 1922-32, was an example of continued belief in unalienated labor, equality, anti-authoritarianism, and—in its date of termination—of the ultimate fate of these things under Stalin. Persimfans and its seventy musicians was a utopia in miniature, a tiny republic, and a model workshop for the communist future” (Revolutionary Dreams, 1991, pp. 135-40). The group grew out of the attempts to create a revolutionary sound, inspired by avant-garde and egalitarian approaches to musical performances throughout the 1910s and early 1920s. As reported in these journals, Persimfans held some of the very first performances in factories, a break with the bourgeois tradition of concert hall performances; their working method, in which precision, efficiency, and independent labor played key roles, likewise paralleled the organization of factory work. Other locations included caserns and workers’ clubs. The performances drew both on classics and on contemporary music and the journal details the orchestra’s varied repertory. Persimfans was instrumental in inviting Prokof’ev back to Russia after his exile; he performed numerous concerts with the orchestra in early 1928, which are described at length in the journal. In addition to concert reports and announcements, it contains biographical articles on composers and performers, as well as reviews by foreign critics. The publication appeared from 1926-29, apparently first as a series of simpler program announcements, and, beginning in 1927, a sequentially numbered, more substantial periodical. As Stites implies, the very notion of a conductorless, egalitarian orchestra would have jarred with Stalin’s vision for a more rigidly controlled Soviet society in the early 1930s. As many powerful supporters, such as Education Commissar Anatoly Lunacharsky, were gradually deposed, the orchestra’s fate was sealed and by 1932 it dissolved. Printed in a small print run for the time, between 2500 and later only 1000 copies. It is likely, moreover, that such materials would have been removed from circulation beginning in the late 1930s, judging from the fate of similar Soviet avant-garde musical experiments of the early 1920s. Weltkriegs war er Stabsarzt in einem Reservelazarett. M. war neben Iwan Bloch, Magnus Hirschfeld, Albert Moll und Hermann Rohleder einer der Begründer der Sexualwissenschaft. 1913 wurde M. Gründungs- und Vorstandsmitglied der „Internationalen Gesellschaft für Sexualforschung". Seit 1919 war er für die Redaktion, seit 1929 auch für die Herausgabe der „Zeitschrift für Sexualwissenschaft" verantwortlich. Sie war das bedeutendste Mitteilungsblatt des jungen Faches. Gleichzeitig publizierte er 1918-31 die „Abhandlungen aus dem Gebiete der Sexualforschung" .M. emigrierte im Sommer 1933 nach Palästina. Die Flucht bedeutete für ihn nicht nur das Verlassen der angestammten Heimat, sondern auch das Ende seines mit den politischideologischen und sozialen Verhältnissen Deutschlands eng verflochtenen wissenschaftlichen Lebenswerks. Spine gently rolled, tips lightly bumped, a few trivial marks to covers, small portion of cockling to rear. A very good, clean copy in the slightly chipped and soiled dust jacket. Presentation copy of the third impression, inscribed by the illustrator "To Brendy, Feb. 22. 1927, from Eric H. Kennington" on the front free endpaper, with an original sketch by Kennington of a baby's face with a halo and angel wings. With a laid-in slip of Kennington's Holly Copse (Goring Heath, Oxon) notepaper inscribed by his wife Celandine "To dear Brendy with ever-growing love & gratitude from Eric & Celandine Ap[ril] 1927", and Celandine's transcription of Lawrence's dedicatory poem to the complete edition Seven Pillars of Wisdom, "To S. A.", to the title verso. Kennington was the art editor for the Cranwell edition of the Seven Pillars (1926), and contributed seven of the portraits reproduced in Revolt in the Desert, an abridged version and the first of Lawrence's accounts of the Arab Revolt to be published in trade issue: the costs for production of the 1926 Cranwell edition Seven Pillars of Wisdom had ballooned to such an extent that Lawrence was contemplating selling either his library or some of his property to clear the debt. Eventually he settled on the publication of an abridgement, undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen, an earlier attempt by Edward Garnett having been set aside. It was published in March 1927, though Kennington's inscription in this copy indicates that the third impression had already been printed before this date. All three of these apparently pre-publication impressions were soon sold out, and two more were quickly added. The profits from this publication made the fortunes of the Cape publishing house. There was also a large-paper issue of 315 numbered copies.
