Journal für Chemie und Physik, Halle - FIRST EDITIONS (2 Volume) OF GEORG OHM'S FIRST & SECOND PAPERS, HERE BEGINNING A SERIES "of experiments documenting the voltage across and the current through simple electrical circuits containing various lengths of wire" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection). These papers lead directly to his seminal 1927 formulation theory of galvanic electricity, or Ohm's Law. Note that the first paper, Vorläufige, (V. 14) was published first in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik while the second paper, also in Schweigger's (V. 16), was published simultaneously in Annalen der Physik as well - meaning that neither scholars nor collectors consider the Schweigger appearance of the second paper, Bestimmung, or the Annalen appearance of more import or worth than the other. " In the field of electrical measurement, Ohm was the great pioneer" ( PMM, 174). He began publishing his electricity researches in 1825 with the first paper: "Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes" offered here. In it, he "sought to find a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force exerted by a current-carrying wire and the length of the wire. Although this paper contained some fundamental errors, it was remarkable for its direct foundation on experiment - the paper deduced clear mathematical relationships based purely on the experimental evidence that Ohm had tabulated; this would grow to be a defining characteristic of all Ohm's early papers (Jeremy Norman). In the second paper offered , Ohm presented the experimental proof of his law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). "Ohm's experimental procedure in ["Bestimmung des Gesetzes"] was analogous to that which he had used earlier but was modified in several significant ways? He now used a thermoelectric pile in order to eliminate the fluctuations in current strength accompanying the voltaic pile, fluctuations that Ohm attributed to changes produced by the current in the distribution of the components in the liquid conductor. "Second, he sought a direct relationship between the electromagnetic force of the current and the entire length of the connecting wire. . . . [in] the paper in question Ohm simply observed that the data from each of his several sets of experiments were very closely represented by the formula X = a/(b + x), where X is the strength of the electromagnetic effect-which he took as a measure of the electric current-of a conductor of length x on the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance, and where a and b are constants the exact nature of which he proposed to determine from additional series of carefully controlled experiments. The observation that b remained constant for all series of experiments, whereas a varied with temperature, led Ohm to conclude that a depended solely on the electromotive force of the pile and b solely on the resistance of the remaining portion of the circuit, in particular that of the pile itself. He also observed that the electromotive force of the thermoelectric pile appeared to be exactly proportional to the temperature difference at its end points. . . . " "After reconfirming the validity of his law by a further series of experiments, Ohm exhibited its explanatory powers on some of the chief unsolved problems which had occupied scientists working on the pile; and he showed how it also cast light on a number of other previously reported but poorly understood experimental findings. . . . The fruitful application of Ohm's simple law to existing problems was an explanatory tour de force" (DSB, Vol. 10). CONDITION & DETAILS: 2 volumes. Halle: Journal für Chemie und Physik. 8vo.         Der Nibelunge Not. Druck der Ernst Ludwig Presse, Exemplar Nr.5 / 2 Bände (vollständig) * G A N Z P E R G A M E N T - Handeinband

Fine photo by R. Ellis in Malta signed by both 'Albert' and 'Elizabeth' and dated by the Duke, (1895-1952, King of England) & ELIZABETH (1900-2002, Queen of Great Britain)

1927 - showing the Royal couple seated on deck, he is wearing white naval uniform and she is wearing a white dress and hat and holding a parasol, behind them the military band is standing holding their french horns, 11½" x 9", framed and glazed In 1926, Prince Albert, Duke of York, and wife Elizabeth had their first child, Princess Elizabeth – "Lilibet" to the family. The following year they undertook a Royal Tour without the baby. The Duchess of York was "very miserable at leaving the baby". Their sea journey took them via Jamaica, (where Albert played doubles tennis partnered with a black man), the Panama Canal and the Pacific. Elizabeth fretted constantly over her baby back in Britain, but their journey was a public relations success. In New Zealand The Yorks enjoyed the local fishing. When they sailed into Sydney harbour on HMS Renown they attracted Australia's first gathering of more than one million people. The principal duty of the Prince on this visit was to open the provisional Parliament House in Canberra, on 9 May 1927. They spent time in New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, with the remaining time for travelling and recreation.

Seattle, WA: Architectural Decorating Co., Inc., 358-362 W. Nickerson St., , 1927. Landscape octavo. Quarter-green cloth over printed textured card wraps, lettered in brown on the front panel. 12 "8 × 10" (203 × 260 mm) silver gelatin photographs, backed with linen, individually stub-mounted, embossed company stamp to corner of each. First edition.Meandering labyrinth of a story about a New York advertising executive who leaves his job in the city to write poetry in a hut by the sea. Although entranced by the ocean and the miles of sand and the salt marshes, David finds himself caught in the coils of his attraction to two women: Hilda, "the mate to his flame, the answering spark," but despairing and fragile (and married), and Scarlet, seductive and available (but morally rotten). Hilda's husband is a sadistic libertine whose subtle cruelties are slowly killing his wife; a situation that so unsettles the poet's wits that he falls prey to a heavily symbolic dream obsession. Smith successfully establishes a surreal voice and includes wonderful passages describing the mad moods of the sea and notes and observations about life and the hereafter, all waiting to be discovered sparkling in the sand throughout the story. The ax of a sharp and discerning editor might have turned Smith's efforts into a compelling Gothic romance, but, alas, the story gets lost in a shifting fog of dreams and fantasies, and never emerges fully formed.Dream's End is a radical departure from Thorne Smith's humorous novels, and was, in fact, Smith's first book rejected by publishers until hisTopper novels became successful. Fans of Thorne Smith are likely to be intrigued by this book for its Gothic nature and for an unexpected glimpse at a more serious side of the author.Condition:Light rubbing to binding, offsetting toning to end-leaves, small bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown. Jacket price clipped, spine toned, some edge chips and tears, some thumb soiling else a very good to fine copy in a better than very good jacket.

A Map of Honolulu and the Sandwich Islands which we now call the Hawaiian Islands.

New York. Henry M. Snyder. 1927. Color pictorial map poster, 27 1/8 x 35 3/8 on sheet 28 3/8 x 36 1/2 inches, early linen backing. Tackhole in each corner and to the middle of each edge, overall toning, scattered foxing, some creases from rolling. A pictographic bird's eye view style street map of Honolulu is surrounded by a border of pictures relating to the history, customs, natural history and scenery of the islands. Decorative cartouche at upper left reads, "In this map you will find depicted in Pictorial Fashion the history, land-marks & customs of these colorful Isles." There is an inset map (9 x 11 3/4 inches) showing the Hawaiian Islands, and small inset images of the Palace Square and Schofield Barracks. This beautiful map was designed by Alexander Samuel MacLeod (1888-1956) who worked in the art departments of various Hawaii magazines and newspapers when he arrived in Hawaii in the 1920s; he also pursued a career as a painter and lithographer. A stunning design packed with interesting information and attractive images. One of the late 1920s decorative maps with a clear debt to the work of MacDonald Gill. This map is more commonly seen folded; this copy was apparently issued flat.

Candide, or All for the Best.

New York: The Bennett Libraries Inc.,, 1927. Translated from the French. With 10 etchings. Exact reprint of the earliest English text printed in Holland by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, founded in Haarlem Anno MDCCIII. Octavo. Publisher's deluxe red morocco by Whitman Bennett, NY, spine gilt in compartments with titles direct, Tice nudes to spine and front board gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. 10 coloured etching by Tice. Some very minor nicks to extremities of the covers, otherwise a superb copy in excellent condition. First Tice edition, one of the 250 special issue copies on deckle-edge Pannekoek paper from a total edition of 1,000, but this copy is unnumbered and additionally signed by Tice. The ordinary issue was bound in quarter cloth, and had the plates uncoloured. The 250 special issue copies were issued with coloured plates and had this Tice-designed full morocco binding in variant colours. However, not even the special issue copies were issued signed, and as such this unnumbered signed copy, perhaps done for presentation or even designating her own retained copy, is superlative. Clara Tice (1888-1973) was a notorious New York bohemian artist, known as "the Queen of Greenwich Village". She was, according to the New York times, the first woman in New York to bob her hair, in 1908. She began exhibiting her art from 1910 and in 1915 her fame skyrocketed when the Society for the Prevention of Vice attempted to confiscate her works at the bohemian restaurant Polly's. "Tice was apparently so highly regarded and so instantly recognizable as one of those 'queer artists' that her role in the first Greenwich Village Follies was simply to play herself. As 'Clara,' she stepped out onto the stage at the appointed time, outfitted in one of her typically bizarre bohemian ensembles, and conducted a 'quick chalk talk of nudes, bees and butterflies'" (Sawelsan-Gorse). Throughout the 1920s she illustrated for Vanity Fair and other magazine, and illustrated several books such as this with her softly erotic illustrations.

Original design & layouts for a projected edition of Eugene O'Neill's Strange Interlude to be published by Boni & Liveright. And 3 letters from Bruce Rogers on W. E. Rudge letterhead to Donald S. Friede about the design, second color printing, type size, page counts, and costs.

NY, September 1927. Rogers drew & lettered the proposed title page in black & green. He designed 4 different printed versions of double spread pages 14 and 15 (one of them printed in two colors). Previously mounted, the pages have old glue stains on the versos; dampstain at base of gutters. Laid into in a homemade marbled folder. In his 1 typed and 2 autograph letters, Rogers sounds at his wit's end and exasperated with Friede. Friede is obviously trying to pare costs.BR tells him that replacing the second color with a second size type will cost just as much--in labor--as BR's original proposal. It has taken BR some time to come up with a satisfactory setting in one color, "but at last [September 21] I send you the result. They seem to me clear and understandable, though I do not think them as good as the other scheme would have been." On September 27th BR sends the 3rd 4th layouts, which "I hope may prove satisfactory, as I have about exhausted the possibilities on this line." he goes on to discuss cost-saving changes to the binding and the final cost per copy. In the end, BR and Rudge did not receive the commission. Strange Interlude was designed by S. A. Jacobs and printed by Van Rees Press.

Epilogue for Violoncello, Piano and Tape. Titled by the composer "Epilog "Peer Gynt' " at head of first page. Autograph musical manuscript. Unsigned and undated, but Hamburg, February 1993.

4 pp. (471 measures). Large folio (425 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both pencil and ink on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper in the composer's small, dense hand. An active composing manuscript of the majority of the work, presenting material for the cello at rehearsal number 4 to several measures after rehearsal number 54. With numerous deletions, changes and corrections. Slightly worn. In very good condition overall. Epilogue, one of Schnittke's most expressive chamber works, was written for the famed Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007), who gave the work its first performance with Schnittke's wife Irina at Evian on Lake Geneva on May 20, 1993. The work is an arrangement of the final part of Schnittke's ballet Peer Gynt (1986). Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output.
