Technical and structural innovations in the art form had been pioneered over the previous decade by numerous filmmakers worldwide, including many Soviet filmmakers such as Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein (the later of whom Trauberg worked under as assistant director), and became part of a larger ongoing discussion and debate on the purpose and philosophy of cinema. A fine copy, housed in a the original blue cloth slipcase. Samuel Pepys FRS, MP, JP, (23 February 1633-26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who is now most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. The detailed private diary Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century, and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London.

        Revolt in the Desert

New York: George H. Doran Co, 1927. First American edition. Pictorial endpapers after Kennington; with 16 plates and a folding map. [xx], 328 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Brown cloth. Fine in very good plus pictorial dust jacket, camel variant (half-inch tear at back fold), bright and generally fresh. First American edition. Pictorial endpapers after Kennington; with 16 plates and a folding map. [xx], 328 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Handsome Copy. Revolt in the Desert was an instant bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic, and "[w]ithin weeks of publication the combined royalties from Revolt were more than sufficient to pay off the Seven Pillars overdraft. Lawrence's Trustees therefore invoked a special clause inserted in the contract with Cape to protect his privacy, and halted publication in England. Revolt continued to sell well, however, both in the United States and in translation" (Wilson [1988], pp. 180). Lawrence was characteristically of two minds about the book: dismissive of the text, which he viewed as an embarrassment to himself, and yet attentive to the critical response. A handsome copy of the first American edition (trade issue). O'Brien A107

        Silhouetten Gedichte Eines Deutsch-Amerikaners

Vienna: Artur Wolf Verlag, 1927. First edition of this suite of prints, after the 1924 edition of the text. Stain on cover, two etchings sprung and with light wear at corners, otherwise fine. 8vo. 76pp. 16 original etchings printed in colors by Erhard Amadeus Dier, each signed in pencil. Original red morocco-backed boards, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine. An arresting series of images by the Austrian artist Erhard Dier (1893-1969), who was a student of Camillo Sitte and Josef Jungwirth at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Dier traveled to Switzerland, Italy and Spain before starting a career as an illustrator, working on designs for Austrian banknotes, tapestries, porcelain, wallpapers, and church windows. While generally known for a florid and temperate style, the present suite offers dramatic contrast, evoking some of the darker spirit found in the work of artists like Gustave Doré or Odilon Redon. Dier contributed to many issues of 'Die Muskete' around this time, always credited as "Amadeus" and hence explaining the difficulty in tracing his full body of work. Scarce: OCLC/WorldCat lists only the copy at the Unversity of Southern California.

The True Historie of Lucian the Samosatenian

The Golden Cockerel Press, Waltham St Lawrence, Berkshire 1927 - 33x23cm, 44pp. With wood engravings by Robert Gibbings printed in black. Copy 207 of 275 with English text printed in Caslon to the centre of each double-page spread and Greek text and engravings flowing around it as a border, on Batchelor handmade paper, quarter bound in tan morocco with five raised bands over oatmeal coarse cloth-covered boards, gilt title to the backstrip, t.e.g., stamped 'BOUND BY SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE' to the front pastedown. A lovely copy of one of the most celebrated books from the 'golden era' of the Golden Cockerel Press under Robert Gibbings, and a pre-war English Private Press classic. Each double-page spread is a triumph of typography, combining English and Greek texts with Gibbing's superb images in a most harmonious and imaginative layout. In Roderick Cave and Sarah Manson's view (A History of the Golden Cockerel Press 1920 - 1960, British Library / Oak Knoll Press 2002) the book is 'as fine' as the 'big three' Golden Cockerels (ie The Four Gospels, Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde) and ranks 'amongst the foremost English illustrated books of the twentieth century'. Condition: Near Fine (a tiny 1x2mm spot of light rubbing to the foot of the backstrip, similarly to two of the raised bands, a couple of small faint foxing spots to the rear endpaper, otherwise unmarked). Part I: The Hall of Memories. Volume III: The Tomb of Puyemre at Thebes. Part II: The Chapels of Hope. Volume IV: The Tomb of the Two Sculptors at Thebes. Volume V: The Ramesside Tombs at Thebes. With 5 frontispieces (4 in color), 178 plates (21 in color), and numerous figures. Original printed wrappers, untrimmed. Limited first edition of this catalogue of the principal tombs at western Thebes published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1917 to 1927, one of 500 atlas folio sets beautifully printed on handmade Van Gelder paper. A magnificent, untrimmed set. - Published in memory of the artist and amateur archaeologist and Egyptologist Robb de Peyster Tytus (1876-1913), this series was published to shed light on the magnificent artistic treasures of the tombs at Thebes. In over 180 folio plates, 25 of which are in color and many of which are folding, statues, paintings, treasures, and the interior plans of the tombs themselves are reproduced in loving detail. - The Robb de Peyster Tytus Memorial Fund was set up by the artist's mother, Mrs. Edward J. Tytus, after his death at the age of 32. For five years the Egyptian Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art received $15,000 which were used to explore the tombs in Sheik Abd-el Qurna and the environs. Norman de Garis Davies (1865-1941) and his wife Nina collaborated with other artists, including Charles K. Wilkinson and H. R. Hopgood, for a decade to achieve the present set. Davies worked on numerous digs in Egypt (including with Petrie at Dendera and with the Egypt Explorations Fund's Archaeological Survey) before being appointed head of the graphics section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's expedition to Egypt in 1907. Along with his wife Nina and his assistant Francis Unwin, he pioneered the use of egg tempera when recording the paintings from tombs, allowing for much more accurate and satisfying results in comparison to watercolours, which, although they rendered the colour with a flat finish, were the standard way of recording tomb paintings before the advent of reliable colour photography. - Insignificant edge flaws to the wrappers. Margins of a few plates very slightly browned; altogether a very clean set. Inconspicuous contemporary bookseller's label of Paul Koehler, Leipzig, to covers of three volumes. OCLC 19290154.         Two letters from Gertrude Jekyll to Mrs Sotheby dated Nov 8th 1930 & Oct 30th 1930, sent from Munstead Wood, Godalming, with envelope plus a letter to Gertrude Jekyll from Herbert Cowley, Editor of Gardener Illustrated returning a leaf (which is present) on the subject of the Iron Tree which the editor says is the Ironwood Tree - Zelkova cremate. Also present: a postcard sized (reproduction?) of a pencil drawing entitled Miss Gertrude Jekyll November 1929 with initials BS, presumably the artist. These are slipped into a green cloth bound 8vo., 'book'. which also contains the service of Gertrude at St John the Baptist Church, Busbridge. This is the Order of Service with the hymns all on laid watermarked paper of Abbey Mills, Greenfield. Pasted in are various press cuttings from local papers on the death and an article from the Bramley Parish Magazine titled "Recollections of Old Bramley" by Gertrude Jekyll. Inserted into the centre are pages of an article by Logan Pearsal Smith consisting 9 pages numbered 148 - 163, titled Gertrude Jekyll There are numerous articles etc.

It appears to be a book which was produced for the funeral, consisting of 62 pages, with 45 pages of text including the pasted in pages. The letter of 30th Oct 1930 thanks Mrs Sotheby for her letters, and says 'our dear Herbert was everything to me, and life seems empty without him". The letter of Nov (?) 8, 1930 refers to the Irontree leaf which evidently Mrs Sotheby had sent to Gertrude. The letter from Cowley is in response and confirms that the leaf is from the Irontree. It goes on to ask he to visit for tea, stating that if Mr Sotheby is with her "then both come to my room upstairs".

The Wild Body. A Soldier of Humour and Other Stories.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1927 - Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge dyed orange. With the dust jacket. Some minor marks and dust soiling to cloth, tape residue to rear leaves from an attached note, but an excellent copy with a very smart dust jacket, only faintly sunned to spine panel and very gently rubbed at ends and corners. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed "to Lady Ottoline Morrell, from Wyndham Lewis, Dec 1929" on the front free endpaper. This copy also has a short autograph note, written on an empty laid in envelope, designating this copy as a Christmas present, and recommending three of the stories from the collection for Morrell to read first. Lewis had frequently attended Morrell's Garsington gatherings, where his hostess had observed the effortlessness with which he created a negative energy around himself. The Wild Body collects eleven sardonic short stories relating the adventures of Ker-Orr, a self-styled "soldier of humour", and his travels in France in the run-up to the First World War. This is a very smart copy with a fine association. Keynes A9 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
