Spenser, Edmund
[Chelsea]: The Ashendene Press (1923 / 1925), 1923. Limited Edition. Vellum. Near Fine. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. 635 p. Limited editions, with the Faerie Queene being one of 180 printed on paper (there were also 12 printed on vellum) and the Minor Poems being one of 200 printed on paper (with an additional 15 being printed on vellum). The two volumes were designed to be companion volumes as St. John Hornby noted in his bibliography; they were printed and bound in a similar manner, and this set comes with a custom slipcase to house both volumes. Many have noted the plea he made opposite the colophon page in the Faerie Queene to future binders not to crop the edges; he had designed a "book beautiful" and wished it not to be desecrated. The volumes are indeed lovely, printed in double columns with a liberal use of red and blue ink, with large intials designed by Graily Hewitt in red and blue; in the Minor Poems there is a larger use of blue than in any of the other books. ***DESCRIPTION: The two volumes bound uniformly, with the binding stamp of "WHS" on the turn-in of the back board in the Faerie Queene, quarter bound in brown cowhide with gilt lettering on the spines, ivory vellum sides over thick boards, red and blue ink used throughout as referenced above, text pages in double columns, type Subiaco on Batchelor paper bearing the Knight in Armour water-mark; elephant folio size (almost 17" tall), pagination: Faerie Queene, (i-viii), 1-406, colophon (407); Minor Poems (i-iv), (1)-216 with colophon on final page. Both volumes are housed in a custom slipcase with a … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEINTHAL, Leo.
The Pioneer Publishing Company Ltd. and "The African World", [1923]. 4to. 4 vols. comprising 3 text volumes and one map and index volume; original morocco-backed boards; numerous mounted photographic portraits, illustrations from photographs, coloured plates, maps including some folding and 12 in pocket of the map volume, facsimile letters and documents, etc.; lightly rubbed, two or three mounting sheets with marginal flaws, very few pages with minor marginal spotting, without the plate of the gorilla at p. 308 in vol. First edition. As Smuts writes in his foreword, this work is a 'monumental record of African Pioneering'. Although its primary theme relates to the development of the Cape to Cairo railway, it encompasses many aspects of British exploration and pioneering in Africa. Indeed the work amounts to a paean to the British colonial period. The list of contributors reads like a Who's Who: John Buchan, Winston Churchill, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, Ewart Grogan, Harry Johnston, Frederick Lugard, Flinders Petrie, Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Selous, Smuts, Reginald Wingate, Francis Younghusband, and numerous others. Chapters cover the development of the gold- and diamond-fields, native peoples and big game along the route, and much else. Catt, Carrie Chapman and Nettie Rogers Shuler
Charles Scribner, New York 1923 - First printing, 1923, 469/1000 copies. Blue cloth with silver lettering, very good copy, with tipped in page after the limitation page SIGNED BY CATT. This page is tanner than the text pages and also shorter; and also has what look like tape removal marks toward its inner margin. It's clear that a previous owner has inserted this page from some other source. We cannot call this a "signed copy" but it is a neatly bound-in signed page and the book looks great. No jacket.
