Trollope, Anthony
1923 - A Comedy. Edited with a Preface by Michael Sadleir. London: Constable & Company, 1923. Original blind-stamped deep red cloth with gilt-decorated spine. First Edition, which consisted of only 500 copies. This is one of only two plays that Trollope ever wrote, as "the genre was uncomfortable to him." He wrote it early in his career, in 1850, at about the same time as his third novel (LA VENDEE). He later used the germ of THE NOBLE JILT to create "one of his best known novels; to it is due the existence of CAN YOU FORGIVE HER?" (Sadleir, the editor who had this book published from the original manuscript -- and from whom these quotes are drawn -- gives a character-by-character comparison between this play and that novel in his preface.) The binding is an exact facsimile of that used in 1864 for CAN YOU FORGIVE HER?.~This is a near-fine copy, without wear but with the spine slightly faded (as usual with this color cloth). Sadleir (Trollope) 70. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Donne, John
Soho: Nonesuch Press, 1923. Small quarto. xxiii, 91, (7)pp. From an edition of 1,200 copies, this is one of twenty ad personam copies, specially bound. This is the first book of Francis Meynall's Nonesuch Press. Meynall, along with his wife, Vera, who selected and edited Donne's text for this production, and David Garnett, founded the Press in order to demonstrate that "mechanical means could be made to serve fine ends." Although the Fell type for this edition was hand-set by Meynall, it was printed on a commercial press at Oxford. This enabled Nonesuch to offer handsome limited editions for about half the price of contemporary private press books, such as Golden Cockerel. This book was a commercial success for Nonesuch, selling out the edition within the year, helped along by favorable magazine reviews by T. S. Eliot. In publisher's special binding of full stained vellum, decorated in gilt. Nearly imperceptible fading to spine, otherwise fine. Bookplate of Sir Frederick Richmond, for whom this copy was printed. Sir Richmond was a noted collector of early needlework.

Rutledge, Archibald (1883-1973; South Carolina poet laureate, 1934-1973)
Mercersburg, PA: 1923. 4to. One-page, in full: "My dear Mr. Newell, That was a great story of yours. I enjoyed every word of it because all my deer-hunting has been done in Carolina, in the type of country you describe. You wrote: 'A change in Missy's bark told me that she had found the dead deer.' Will a hound ever bay a dead deer? I'm sure that Missy came up with the wounded buck, and that he beat her off. When she changed her bark, she had brought him to a stand. How think you? A comrade hunter, Archibald Rutledge." David Newell (1898-1986) was a long-time contributor to "Field & Stream," "Sports Afield," and similar periodicals, and a hunting guide in Florida for Annie Oakley and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, among others. Very good. Rutledge letters with hunting content are very scarce in trade; this is one of just a few that we have offered over the past 35 years. Folded. (#8466.
