Jones, Bobby (Robert Tyre Jones, Jr.)
1923. Original photograph of Bobby Jones swinging a wood on the fairway. Boldly inscribed by Bobby Jones. The photograph measures 7.5 inches by 9.25 inches. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15.5 inches by 18 inches. Photographs signed by Bobby Jones are uncommon. Robert T. Jones was an American golfer who was one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport. Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club, and co-founded the Masters Tournament. The innovations that he introduced at the Masters have been copied by virtually every professional golf tournament in the world. Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete at a national and international level. During his peak from 1923 to 1930, he dominated top-level amateur competition, and competed very successfully against the world's best professional golfers. Jones often beat stars such as Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen, the era's top pros. Jones earned his living mainly as a lawyer, and competed in golf only as an amateur, primarily on a part-time basis, and chose to retire from competition at age 28, though he earned significant money from golf after that, as an instructor and equipment designer. Explaining his decision to retire, Jones said, "It [championship golf] is something like a cage. First you are expected to get into it and then you are expected to stay there. But of course, nobody can stay there." Jones is most famous for his unique "Grand Slam, " consisting of his victory in all four major golf tournaments of his era (the open and amateur championshi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark (Samuel Clemens)
Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York, 1923. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. With an appreciation by Brander Matthews and an introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. Uncommon in this condition. This volume contains thirty-five articles of varying length dated all along through the years from the early '70's to 1908. Some of them had newspaper or magazine publication at the time, but most of them are now put into print for the first time. "A number of articles in this volume, even the more important, have not heretofore appeared in print. Few of these papers were unimportant, and a fresh interest attaches to them today in the fact that they present some new point of observation, some hitherto unexpected angle of Mark Twain's indefatigable thought" (Albert Bigelow Paine). CHARLES LORENZO CLARKE
1923. No binding. Good. Archive. Fascinating small archive from the man who, during his long collaboration with Thomas Edison, drew the now familiar horseshoe filament for the light bulb and became Chief Engineer of Edison Electric Light Co. [We must note that this is the second group of books we have discovered - in the past we had a smaller group which was sold.] Handwritten by the fascinating, obsessive Yann De Pierrefeu from the time he was attending Harvard University and then after he dropped out of Harvard University. Yann was born in 1905 in France. His father was Count Alain De Pierrefeu who in 1915 was tragically killed working in a Red Cross ambulance in WWI France. HILBERT, David.
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1923. First edition. First edition, the extremely rare author's presentation offprint issue, of the second major paper in the development of the 'Hilbert programme.' Based upon a lecture given at Leipzig in September 1923, it is the sequel to Hilbert's Neubegründung der Mathematik (1922), in which Hilbert had put forward his proposal for a foundation for all of mathematics based on axiomatics and logic. "Hilbert sketched in his Leipzig talk of September 1922, which was published as [the present paper], the consistency proof [for arithmetic]. However, the really dramatic aspect of his proof-theoretic discussion is the treatment of quantifiers with the τ-function ... Hilbert extends the consistency argument then to the 'first and simplest case' that goes beyond the finitist system ... It is only in the Leipzig talk that Hilbert gave proof theory its principled formulation and discussed its technical tools - for the first time outside of Göttingen. As far as analysis is concerned, [he proves]: i) the least upper bound principle for sequences and sets of real numbers, ii) Zermelo's choice principle for sets of sets of real numbers ... He ends the paper with the remark: 'Now the task remains of precisely carrying out the basic ideas I just sketched; its solution completes the founding of analysis and prepares the ground for the founding of set theory'" (Sieg, p. 135). OCLC locates the copy at the Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg only. Hilbert's work on the foundations of mathematics has its roots in his work on geometry of the 1890s, culminating in his inf … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frost Robert
New York: Henry Holt, 1923. First Edition, First Printing. Beautifully illustrated throughout with woodcuts by J. J. Lankes. 8vo, publisher's original half green cloth over gray paper covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt and with a gilt label lettered in gray on the upper cover, with the original publisher's printed and decorated dustjacket. 113 pp. A very good copy, internally very fine, fresh and clean, the binding with only a very small amount of age at the backstrip and a touch of rubbing to the bottom corners, the jacket present though with a bit of wear and some chipping, the rear panel more so than the front and spine panels which both still look quite nice. FIRST EDITION. NEW HAMPSHIRE is one of Frost's earlier works and also one of his greatest. The collection includes the title-poem, one of his longer works, as well as over 35 others. It includes such well known poems as; "Star-Splitter, "Dust to Snow" and perhaps one of his most often recited works "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", a perennial holiday favorite in New England and other chilly climes. Considered one of the greatest 20th century American poets, Frost also won much acclaim and popularity throughout the English speaking world. J.J. Lankes and Robert Frost enjoyed a long professional and personal association. Lankes' woodcuts beautified many of Frost's published works.
