CHAMPAGNE-VINS.
Collection Draeger - ex-libris. GASTRONOMIE et OENOLOGIE

In spite of all the criticism, no one intending to seriously study Islam in Indonesia will be able to avoid reading Snouck Hurgronje's work and consulting them again and again' (Boland-Farjon, Islam in Indonesia, p.16-17). 1923. Condition: Good. The Twenty Fourth Infantry Past and Present--ORIGINAL UNIT HISTORY-COLORED UNIT Description The Twenty Fourth Infantry Past and Present--ORIGINAL UNIT HISTORY-COLORED UNIT I am selling a very SCARCE US Army Unit History entitled "The Twenty Fourth Infantry Past and Present" by William G. Muller, Capt. and Adjutant, 24th Infantry. Published by the Unit, undated, circa 1923. The Twenty-Fourth Infantry was formed in 1869 from remnants of the 38th and 41st Colored Infantry Regiments that had served in the Civil War. The book is dedicated "to those colored non-commissioned officers and soldiers whose unswerving loyalty and devotion of the regiment made possible these brilliant pages of history." This unit served in patrol and policing actions at the Mexican Border, and fought Indians in the West. It later served in San Juan and the Philippines, and ultimately in WWII and Korea. Contains many photos and a history of the unit. Book is in about Good condition--name appears, front cover hinge is cracked. Wear to spine and corners. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL UNIT HISTORY AND NOT A CONTEMPORARY REPRINT. Book measures 8 X 10 3/4. This is a very SCARCE Unit History--very few have survived. Eisen; Antioch
NEW YORK, 1923 Published by KOUCHAKJI FRERES Binding: HARD BACK BROWN Size: 15X19 200 Pages Overall Condition is: GOOD EXTRA POSTAGE REQUIRED. Original black moroccan leather over gilt-stamped olive cloth, with gold lettering and tooling to leather spines. Top edge gilt. Decorative headpieces and initials. This set is unumbered limited edition of 1000, and was printed on uncut cotton rag paper, by Crane and Co. Foreword by famed art historian Josef Strzygowski. The book was designed and decorated by illustrator and graphic artist Edward B. Edwards. The publication is a comprehensive academic and photographic study of the Chalice of Antioch, including 60 highly detailed plates of b/w photogravure and copper plate engravings. The Chalice was said to be one of the contenders to be the authentic Holy Chalice of Christ, when it was discovered in Antioch, in 1910. Study of the object in the intervening years, has since ruled out this possibility. It is however, still considered one of the more acclaimed and earliest surviving Christian relics, dating from the early 5th century. Vol.1 has a detailed scholarly analysis of the Chalice from comparative historical, artistic, and technical perspectives, commenting on all aspects of the object. The end of the first volume contains 2 plates of diagrams, one is a dynamic analysis of the object's structure and the second is a visual study of the occulted spirals present in the faces on the Chalice. Vol.2 contains 60 plates of illustrations (some as large as 13.5 x 8.5 ), 48 of which are reproduced in photogravure after photographs, by the au … [Click Below for Full Description]

COMPTON, ARTHUR HOLLY. - [THE DISCOVERY OF THE COMPTON-EFFECT, NOBEL PRIZE PAPER]
Lancaster, American Physical Society, 1923. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrappers. In: Physical Review, Second Series, Vol. 25, No. 5, May 1923. With black cloth back-strip. Front wrapper missing top right corner and front wrapper washed/polished. Internally fine and clean. [Compton's paper:] pp. 483-502. [Entire issue:] Pp: 483-584. ¶ First printing of this milestone paper in quantum physics in which Compton verifies Planck's quantum postulate and found that some of the X-rays had, in scattering, lenghtened their wavelenght. This phenomena was called the "Compton Effect" in his honour. For this discovery Compton received the Nobel prize in physics in 1927."Compton was able to account for this (lenghtening of wavelenght) by presuming that a photon of light struch an electron, which recoiled, subtracting some energy from the photon and therefore increasing its wavelenght. This made it seem that a photon acted as a particle: thus after more than a century, the particulate natuer of light, as evolved by Newton, was revived... What itamounted to was that Compton brought to fruition the view that electromagnetic radiation had both a wave aspect and a particle aspect, and that the aspect which was most evident depended on how the radiation was tested. De Broglie was, at the same time, showing that this held true also for ordinary particles, such as electrons." (Asimov)Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1923 P. - Sigmund Brandt "The Harvest of as Century", Episode 31.

His reading books, devised to enable private students to read, were the best introductions to hieroglyphs in English for 30 years. The Egyptian Hieroglyphic Dictionary (1920), a remarkable achievement for one man, is still useful" (DNB). Without scarce dust jacket. A fine inscribed copy. Translated by B[essie] G[ardner] du Pont
University of Delaware Press, 1923. Hard Cover. Limited Edition. Largely a collection of the correspondence of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont, the French-born American manufacturer. du Pont's father became acquainted with Thomas Jefferson when he was minister to France, a friendship which undoubtedly influenced the family decision to emigrate to the United States after the French Revolution. The 12 volumes in parchment backed boards. An attractive set, in an edition limited to 250 copies. There is a previous owner name on the endpaper of each volume. One volume has a small abrasion in the titling at the spine. The gilt top edges have some minor spotting, as do a couple of the parchment spines. Very Good binding.

The spine of the book has tape over it, which continues over the front and back covers (see pics).
