Maxim Gorky
New York: Boni & Liveright. MY UNIVERSITY DAYS The third and final installment in Maxim Gorky's autobiography of his youth, published in America in 1923. This first edition copy is signed by the author on the title page. Maxim Gorky, a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize, is widely acknowledged as one of the most important Russian writers of all time, often mentioned alongside Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekov. He almost never signed his works, making his signature in this book an exceptional rarity. This autograph differs slightly from Gorky's usual signature, and I've included a very similar example (second-to-last photo) from another of his books, which is listed by another seller elsewhere online for $1,800. The book lacks a dustjacket and is in reasonably good shape overall. The covers show moderate soilind and wear, no serious defect; the binding is cracked at the front endpaper and one other place in the text; the front free endpaper is missing, and the second page is loose; the text has scattered soiling and a few corner creases, no major flaws. An uncommon first, but of course the value is in the extremely scarce autograph. Hardcover, 5.75" X 8.25", 327 pages. The photo of Gorky does not appear in the book. Ships promptly & securely. Mauretania
Stamford, CT: Publishers Photo Service, Inc. Condition: Most photos fine, though a few are lightly scuffed. [114] pages. 13-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches. Photo album of the first luxury cruise of the RMS Mauretania (Cunard Line), following its sixteen years of service as a transatlantic ocean liner, and World War One hospital ship. This first cruise was commissioned by the American Express Travel Company, and aimed exclusively at the wealthy, with prohibitively costly ticket prices. Advertisements announced Mauretania would be diverted from her regular ports 'to make an epoch in cruising history.' Ads ran widely in magazines including Travel, National Geographic, Country Life, The Dial, Current Opinion, Literary Digest, and elsewhere. The cruise left the Port of New York on February 10, 1923 and returned the following April. At the time, Mauretania was the blue riband record holder for the fastest ship on the Atlantic, an honor it held for 20 years. Newspapers at the time reported the cruise was re-christened mid-voyage as 'The Hundred Million Dollar Ship" due to its moneyed patrons. The bespoke album contains 113 black-and-white photographs, 9-1/2 by 7-1/2 inches each, tipped-in recto only, one per page, with caption labels in varying fonts glued beneath. Includes two full images of the Mauretania herself, one in Corsica and one from the Grand Corniche Drive in the French Riviera, plus one of the bow taken aboard at the landing at Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The photos depict idyllic stops in Spain, Algiers, Monte Carlo, The French Riviera, Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Istanbul, Athens … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book was designed and decorated by illustrator and graphic artist Edward B. Edwards. The publication is a comprehensive academic and photographic study of the Chalice of Antioch, including 60 highly detailed plates of b/w photogravure and copper plate engravings. The Chalice was said to be one of the contenders to be the authentic Holy Chalice of Christ, when it was discovered in Antioch, in 1910. Study of the object in the intervening years, has since ruled out this possibility. It is however, still considered one of the more acclaimed and earliest surviving Christian relics, dating from the early 5th century. Vol.1 has a detailed scholarly analysis of the Chalice from comparative historical, artistic, and technical perspectives, commenting on all aspects of the object. The end of the first volume contains 2 plates of diagrams, one is a dynamic analysis of the object's structure and the second is a visual study of the occulted spirals present in the faces on the Chalice. HILBERT, David.
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1923. First edition, the extremely rare author's presentation offprint issue, of the second major paper in the development of the 'Hilbert programme.' Based upon a lecture given at Leipzig in September 1923, it is the sequel to Hilbert's <em>Neubegründung der Mathematik </em>(1922), in which Hilbert had put forward his proposal for a foundation for all of mathematics based on axiomatics and logic. "Hilbert sketched in his Leipzig talk of September 1922, which was published as [the present paper], the consistency proof [for arithmetic]. However, the really dramatic aspect of his proof-theoretic discussion is the treatment of quantifiers with the τ-function ... Hilbert extends the consistency argument then to the 'first and simplest case' that goes beyond the finitist system ... It is only in the Leipzig talk that Hilbert gave proof theory its principled formulation and discussed its technical tools - for the first time outside of Göttingen. As far as analysis is concerned, [he proves]: i) the least upper bound principle for sequences and sets of real numbers, ii) Zermelo's choice principle for sets of sets of real numbers ... He ends the paper with the remark: 'Now the task remains of precisely carrying out the basic ideas I just sketched; its solution completes the founding of analysis and prepares the ground for the founding of set theory'" (Sieg, p. 135). OCLC locates the copy at the Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg only.</p> <p>Hilbert's work on the foundations of mathematics has its roots in his work on geometry of the 1890s, culminating in his i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richmond: printed and published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1923. Richmond: printed and published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press,, 1923. Octavo. Original marbled blue paper boards, white paper title label to front board printed in black, edges untrimmed. Housed in a black morocco-backed bookform slipcase and chemise. Extremities worn, some superficial splits to joints and the spine somewhat sunned, two patches of tape residue around spine, internally sound and clean, a good copy. First UK edition, sole impression, one of about 460 copies hand-printed by the Woolfs. This copy of Eliot's modernist masterpiece comes from the library of Ezra Pound, with the "Brunnenburg, Tirolo (Merano), Italia" blind stamp to title page. Brunnenburg castle was where Pound, following his release from incarceration in St Elizabeth's asylum, went to stay with his daughter Mary de Rauchewiltz in 1958 and wrote the last of his Cantos. Rauchewiltz was Pound's daughter with his lover the violinist Olga Rudge, whose ink ownership is boldly inscribed over the front free endpaper. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1895, Olga Rudge settled in London with her mother in 1904. There, and in Paris, she pursued a career as a violinist. By the time she made her London debut at twenty-one, she had already received favourable notices. The critic for the Times noted her excellent technique and daring repertoire, which included a number of emerging modernists. After that performance she embarked on a cosmopolitan schedule of European recitals, ending in Paris where she joi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Doran. This was published in 1923. I bought this at an estate sale of a man who had been dealing in antiques since the 1950s. The book is in excellent condition. There is some minor wear to the cover. Also some minor wear to the dust jacket, and a small tear along the bottom of the dust jacket (I included a photo of the small tear). A few of the pages toward the back of the book are still joined together. They could be carefully cut open, or left as they are. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

Fitzgerald, F. Scott (Holograph Letter signed)
Circa 1923. This handwritten letter is 2 pages, 8.5 " x 11" written in ink from Great Neck when Scott and Tom Boyd were friends and colleagues on the St. Paul Daily News. In addition to being a book reviewer, Boyd also had a bookshop, Kilmarnock Books. Dimensions; 8.5" x 11". Signed boldly "As ever Scott–" Detailed letter of provenance upon request. Fitzgerald is referring to Boyd’s first novel, Through the Wheat, and his efforts to promote it and have it reviewed by Edmund Wilson and H.L. Mencken. Fitzgerald himself wrote a very handsome review of the novel. After all, it was Fitzgerald who took the manuscript of Through the Wheat to Max Perkins at Scribner's and ardently urged its publication. Dear Tom–– Thanks for the book, the pre-review and the scrumptious inscription and also for liking The Vegetable. Your book (Through the Wheat) is quite a sensation here and you certainly have to thank Perkins for the best press of the spring. As to the sale it depends on that incalculable element––the public mood, the psychological state they’re in. There’s been so much exploitation lately that is almost impossible for a press to create a mood. However its certainly made you among the literati. I got Wilson to read it. He liked it enormously and is reviewing it. Also I sent a copy to Mencken with section of the jacket marked off (deleted) lest he get a false impression. He said of Peggy’s book in his reply that it was a good substantial canny piece of work marred by some high school crudities. When she gets her royalty report in August please let me know how many it sold. I gave yo … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELIOT, T. S.
