... Firenze, Stab. Tip. I. Funghi & C., 1923-1924, Collezione completa. [Click Below for Full Description]

Colette Sidonie Gabrielle 1873 1953
Paris, Berger Levrault, 1923. Royal octavo. Pp. vi, 344. With 4 figures. Hardcover, bound in contemporary half cloth and marbled boards, old shelf tickets to spine, old military institutional stamp to title. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Very rare. General Frédéric-Georges Herr (1855-1932). One of the most useful books on the development of ideas and artillery. It went through several editions, and in 1925 was translated into German as "Die Artillerie in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft". In 1912, Herr had observed the Balkan wars and predicted many of the features of the war he later was to fight in Verdun. Already by 1915 it had become clear to him that the main problem facing artillery was no longer a simple question of supply and materials and that "a gigantic intellectual effort was required". Successful artillery was to become a complex techno-scientific problem, and the solution was "the scientific preparation of shooting" ("la préparation scientifique du tir"). Lucas, Lieutenant-Colonel (Pascal-Marie-Henri).
Paris, Berger Levrault. Crown quarto. Pp. ix, 323. Hardcover, bound in contemporary cloth and marbled boards, part from original printed wrapper laid-down, cloth French corners, old shelf ticket to spine, old military institutional stamp to title and number to half-title. In fine condition. Paper evenly age toned else an excellent copy, practically unused. ~ First edition. Lucas' work was exceptionally successful. In 1925 (some bibliographies say 1923) it was translated into English as "The evolution of tactical ideas in France and Germany during the war of 1914-1918" and apparently also published by Berger-Levrault, a rather uncommon event. In French it went through several editions, with the 2nd edition appearing directly the next year (1924); the 3rd in 1925, and the 4th edition, apparently the last, in 1932. Copies of the present first edition are extremely rare as apparently were printed in a small run. OCLC does not locate a single institutional holding worldwide of this edition. Raban soon became a major influence at the Bezalel. He played a central role at the Academy teaching repoussé work, painting, and sculpture and then directing the Graphics Press and the Industrial Art Studio of the Bezalel Academy. Margaret Wilson
Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York and London, 1923. "The Able McLaughlins" by Margaret Wilson. A first edition copy of the 1924 Pulitzer Prize winner for novels. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York and London, 1923. Measures 5.25'' x 7.15'', 263 pages. The book has been recased. The book is in very good minus condition. Some staining and foxing on the fore edges. Slightly bumped corners and some shelf wear on the spine. The text block is largely clean and is complete. The binding is sound. Wikipedia describes the plot of the novel: "Wully McLaughlin, doughty but inarticulate young hero, returns form Grant's army to find that his sweetheart, Christie McNair, has fallen a victim, against her will, to the scapegrace of the community, Peter Keith. She has concealed her plight from every one [sic], but cannot conceal it from him. Wully grasps the situation with masterful promptness. He makes Peter leave under threat of death, marries Christie, and accepts the paternity of her child and the blame for its disgracefully early birth. Peter steals back to see the woman he violated, at a time when the anger of Wully and Christie against him has not lost a degree of its incandescence. Wully hunts him with a shotgun, but he has disappeared. Then, a few weeks later, Wully suddenly finds him?and revenge and forgiveness are reconciled in Miss Wilson's last pages with surprising convincingness." [KARSAVINA, Tamara 1885-1978] Oppler, Ernst 1867-1929
1923. Limited to 100 copies, this number 88. "Karsavina was a Russian prima ballerina, renowned for her beauty, who was a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and later of the Ballets Russes of Serge Diaghilev. After settling in Britain at Hampstead in London, she began teaching ballet professionally and became recognised as one of the founders of modern British ballet. She assisted in the establishment of The Royal Ballet and was a founder member of the Royal Academy of Dance, which is now the world's largest dance-teaching organisation... Her most famous roles were Lise in La Fille Mal Gardée, Medora in Le Corsaire, and the Tsar Maiden in The Little Humpbacked Horse. She was the first ballerina to dance in the so-called Le Corsaire Pas de Deux in 1915." Wikipedia. Oppler was a noted German expressionist painter and etcher. "In 1912 after controversies about expressionism he stopped participating in the exhibitions of the Berlin secession but he still remained one of the most prominent members of the avantgarde. The German state bought works from Oppler and exhibited them in museums as examples of the new wave in art. Oppler started to visit dancing performances of the Russian ballet which was very popular at that time and began to document the performances. He became also an important chronicler of the history of ballet in Germany." Wikipedia. Oppler executed at least ten prints of Karsavina performing the polka. Morgan, Jr., John Pierpont
1923. A proxy boldly signed by John Pierpont Morgan, Jr. as a shareholder and appointing five men as his proxies, who were George F. Baker, Walter B. James, Edward S. Harkness, Robert S. Brewster, and R.T. Crane, Jr., at the Annual Meeting of the Shareholders of Jekyl Island Club." Double matted and framed, with a photograph of Morgan. The entire piece measures 13.25 inches by 17.25 inches. Rare and desirable. Created in 1885, the Jekyll Island Club, limited to 100 individuals in order to maintain exclusivity, counted among its members newspaper tycoon Joseph Pulitzer, department store magnate Marshall Field, railroad heir and philanthropist William K. Vanderbilt, Equitable Life Insurance founder Henry Hyde, and banker and financier J. Pierpont Morgan. Famously, it was at the elite club in November 1910 that a committee of senators, bankers and treasury officials secretly met to draft legislation to create the U.S. Federal Reserve. The Jekyll Island Club declined during the Great Depression and, despite a restructuring of membership fees, closed during World War II.
