STRAVINSKY IGOR
[Click Below for Full Description]

OUR COLLECTION OF WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS WAS PURCHASED FROM THE HOME IN VENTNOR THE CITY NEXT TO OUR GREAT ATLANTIC CITY. Roland De Hellebranth A Doctor who performed surgeries at home and sisters Bertha de Hellebranth and Elena were born into a cultured upper-class family in Budapest, Bertha in 1899, Elena in 1897. Their father was a lawyer and their mother a student of Franz Liszt's last living pupil. They studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Budapest, at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and painted portraits of European nobility. As Patricia Fazekas points out, Growing up in a family of privilege, they seemed to have unusual access to many illustrious people. So we should not be surprised to find among their subjects members of high society, such as Count Andrássy Gyula, the Russian-born Princess Baby Galitzine, and Admiral Horthy Miklós, the Regent. Later on, their subjects included American heiress Gladys Vanderbilt (Countess László Széchenyi), President Theodore Roosevelt's granddaughter Paulina Longworth and former President Dwight D. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923 First edition, first printing, first issue with "stoppped" for "stopped" to p. 181. One of 5,090 copies. Publisher's black cloth with gold title labels to the front board and spine. A very good copy with some fading to cloth including some lighter areas on the front board, labels lightly rubbed, spine label with a vertical crease, extremities bumped, one tiny pin-size hole to the front hinge, bookplate to front pastedown, two innocuous coffee cup stains to front free endpaper, spine slightly shaken. Overall, a nice copy that presents well. Hanneman A6a. The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's second novel and is considered his most important work. The text tells the story of American and British expatriates who travel to the Festival of San Fermínin in Pamplona, Spain. The plot, which is based on Hemingway's own experience at the Festival of San Fermínin with literary expatriates then living in Paris, unites Hemingway's main interests that continue to appear in his subsequent novels. Additionally, The Sun Also Rises utilizes the Iceberg Theory so evident in much of Hemingway's writing, where the true essence of the story is not expressly said in the plot but rather is meant to be inferred. Hemingway's experiences in Pamplona inspired his interest and vast knowledge of bullfighting, which he showcased in his non-fiction work Death in the Afternoon (1932).. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Mauretania
Stamford, CT: Publishers Photo Service, Inc. Condition: Most photos fine, though a few are lightly scuffed. [114] pages. 13-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches. Photo album of the first luxury cruise of the RMS Mauretania (Cunard Line), following its sixteen years of service as a transatlantic ocean liner, and World War One hospital ship. This first cruise was commissioned by the American Express Travel Company, and aimed exclusively at the wealthy, with prohibitively costly ticket prices. Advertisements announced Mauretania would be diverted from her regular ports 'to make an epoch in cruising history.' Ads ran widely in magazines including Travel, National Geographic, Country Life, The Dial, Current Opinion, Literary Digest, and elsewhere. The cruise left the Port of New York on February 10, 1923 and returned the following April. At the time, Mauretania was the blue riband record holder for the fastest ship on the Atlantic, an honor it held for 20 years. Newspapers at the time reported the cruise was re-christened mid-voyage as 'The Hundred Million Dollar Shipâ€? due to its moneyed patrons. The bespoke album contains 113 black-and-white photographs, 9-1/2 by 7-1/2 inches each, tipped-in recto only, one per page, with caption labels in varying fonts glued beneath. Includes two full images of the Mauretania herself, one in Corsica and one from the Grand Corniche Drive in the French Riviera, plus one of the bow taken aboard at the landing at Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The photos depict idyllic stops in Spain, Algiers, Monte Carlo, The French Riviera, Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Istanbul, Athe … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOOLD-ADAMS, Evelyn St. Bride.] G.-ADAMS, B. M.
Paris: Printed at the Three Mountain Press, 1923. Royal octavo. Original floral-patterned boards, paper label printed in black to front board, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, mainly unopened. Some loss to spine with splits along joints, text block still sound, extremities rubbed, slight wear to tips, browning to free endpapers, otherwise internally clean. A very good copy of a fragile publication. First and limited edition, number 9 of 150 copies only. B. M. G-Adams was the pen name of Evelyn St. Bride Scratton (née Goold-Adams) a friend and sometime lover of Ezra Pound. This work is a collection of three sketches of English country life. Pound encouraged St. Bride's writing and promoted her work, influencing the appearance of her writing in The Dial (1923), The Criterion (1923) and the six-part series, of which this work is the fifth part, The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose. This series, edited by Pound also consisted of work by Pound himself, Ford Madox Ford, B. C. Windeler, William Carlos Williams, and Ernest Hemingway. The Three Mountain Press was a small Parisian press founded by American expatriate William Bird in 1922, and published many key works in the modernist movement. It was later taken over by Nancy Cunard, becoming the Hours Press in 1928. An attractive and uncommon work, with just one copy traced at auction. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ca. 1923. 43 b/w photographic leaves (5 laid in). 48 original silver-gelatin photos (7.25" x 9.5") exhibiting the factory, assembly floor, testing area, wide range of liquid ring vacuum pumps, and the numerous industries, commercial buildings, and homes in which they were installed. Item #41435 This exceptional salesman sample photo album for the Nash Engineering Company in South Norwalk, CT, provides an excellent visual history of this pioneering producer of liquid ring vacuum pumps. Although their vital importance to the modern age remains mostly unrecognized, the liquid ring pump revolutionized water, heating, electric power, and sewage systems, pulp and papaer production, and proved absolutely vital in gas extraction, and many other general industrial applications in the 20th century. These unsung workhorses are essential to modern physical plant systems. Nash (1852-1923) invented the liquid ring vacuum pump, and was the holder of over 100 US patents for pumps, engines, water meters, and other equipment. He founded the Nash Engineering Company in 1905, and by 1914 filed the … [Click Below for Full Description]

NABOKOV, VLADIMIR. [SIRIN]. [CARROLL, LEWIS]
Berlin: Izdaterstov Gamayun, 1923. First edition. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF NABOKOV'S RUSSIAN TRANSLATION OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ZALSHUPIN. A MAGNIFICENT COPY. Alice's Adventures in Wonder-Land is a brilliant, famous, and (literally) wonder-ful book, but it can also be a difficult book, since today's reader is located over 150 years and (in the case of American readers) some three to six thousand miles from the point in space and time at which the work was published. As a result, Lewis Carroll's jokes are not always readily grasped by the modern reader. What is a comfit? What, applied to beaches, does "shingle" mean? What is a bathing machine? Why did Carroll make the mad tea-party guest a hatter? "You Are Old Father William" is a brilliant parody, but the poem that it parodies is no longer familiar to most readers, even in the English-speaking world. These difficulties are only enhanced when a translator attempts to transpose Carroll's obscure references, sly nudges, and brilliant British word play to a foreign language and an even more foreign culture. Lengthy treatises have been written about the difficulties of translating Alice, including, notably Warren Weaver's 1964 work "Alice in Many Tongues" and, more recently, Oak Knoll Press' "Alice in a World of Wonderlands," in three massive volumes. In 1923 a young Vladimir Nabokov accepted the challenge by translating Alice into Russian. The translation is a marriage made in heaven -- an encounter between the greatest Anglophone and Russophone writer of the twentieth century and the author of one of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

SVEVO, Italo.
Bologna: Licinio Cappelli - Editore, Rocca S. Casciano, Trieste, 1 May 1923. Octavo. Original printed wrappers. Contemporary Milanese ink ownership inscription to front blank. Some restoration to spine, joints and to a small chip at the top of front wrapper, otherwise a little marked and dust-soiled, marginal toning within, still very good condition. First edition, first printing, of this key modernist novel, scarce, particularly in collectable condition. La Coscienza di Zeno is a posed as rambling memoir set down by a troubled tobacco fiend named Zeno, whose life is an interminable success of "last cigarettes", at the suggestion of his psychiatrist, and vengefully published by the doctor after Zeno discontinues his visits. It received little notice when it was published (at the author's expense) in Italy. However, through the support of James Joyce, who had been living in Trieste and acting as English teacher to Ettore Schmitz (pseud. Italo Svevo), Svevo was championed in Paris and his novel translated first into French (Gallimard, 1927, trans. Paul-Henri Michel) and then English (Putnam, 1930, trans. Beryl de Zoete). Before his death following a car accident in September 1928, Svevo lived to see himself hailed as the Proust of Italy, and was received into the Parisian literary scene: "Svevo, lacking the confidence in his genius that carried Joyce through so much frustration, was amazed. Calling himself, in the face of his belated fame, a 'bambino di 64 anni'. he charmed his hosts at a 1928 Paris literary dinner in his honor by filtering his ingenuous joy through a screen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arnold Sommerfeld
London: Methuen, 1923. First edition in English, 8vo, pp. xiii, [1], 626; a fine copy in the original printed dust jacket (with considerable text on it touting the importance of the book) with several minor breaks at folds. Sommerfeld was one of the most advanced theoretical physicists of his day. The "extraordinary extension, enrichment, and precision of Bohr's [quantum] theory by Sommerfeld contributed decisively to its rapid and wide-spread acceptance. Only five years after Bohr's first publication Sommerfeld, recognizing that the mathematical development of this quantum-theoretical atomic model had reached a conclusion of sorts, undertook a comprehensive exposition of the field. His Atombau und Spektrallinien, of which the first edition appeared in late 1919, immediately became the bible of atomic physics, and its successive editions, appearing almost annually in the early 1920's, chronicled the progress of this field up to the eve of the introduction of quantum mechanics" (DSB). This copy with the early ownership signature of Raymond D. Douglas, MIT class of 1924 and later a professor of mathematics there. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Hesse,Hermann
Montagnola,Mardersteig. Entrambi risultano molto rari. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
