Maxim Gorky
New York: Boni & Liveright. MY UNIVERSITY DAYS The third and final installment in Maxim Gorky's autobiography of his youth, published in America in 1923. This first edition copy is signed by the author on the title page. Maxim Gorky, a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize, is widely acknowledged as one of the most important Russian writers of all time, often mentioned alongside Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekov. He almost never signed his works, making his signature in this book an exceptional rarity. This autograph differs slightly from Gorky's usual signature, and I've included a very similar example (second-to-last photo) from another of his books, which is listed by another seller elsewhere online for $1,800. The book lacks a dustjacket and is in reasonably good shape overall. The covers show moderate soilind and wear, no serious defect; the binding is cracked at the front endpaper and one other place in the text; the front free endpaper is missing, and the second page is loose; the text has scattered soiling and a few corner creases, no major flaws. An uncommon first, but of course the value is in the extremely scarce autograph. Hardcover, 5.75" X 8.25", 327 pages. The photo of Gorky does not appear in the book. Ships promptly & securely. Moscow: Izdatel'stvo L.D. Frenkel', 1923. 237, [3] pp.: ill. 19,5x14 cm. In original printed wrappers. Book is separated in two parts, lacks small pieces of the spine, faded Soviet bookshop's stamps on the back cover. 1 of 3000 copies. First edition. The Rumyantsev Museum was Moscow's first public museum. It evolved from the personal art collection and library of Count Nikolay Rumyantsev (1754-1826), the last of his family. One year after this guidebook was published museum was shut down by the Soviet government, and the museum's collection of manuscripts and incunabula was reorganized as the Lenin Library (now the Russian State Library). The books includes: Outline of the history of the Rumyantsev Museum and its transfer to Moscow, Nikolai Rumyantsev's activity as educator and philanthropist, Features of Rumyantsev's collections as part of the Museum, History of the library, its content and organization, manuscript department (the separate chapter with a lot of details). Lists of incunable editions (Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland), Aldines, and manuscripts starting with famous The Archangelsk Gospel, the fourth oldest Eastern Slavic manuscript (1092). Great account of how Rumyantsev library was forming - from whose collections books came from, how they were maintained and described. It's also interesting to see through description and photos of the Rumyantsev Museum before it ceased to exist.

Tarabukin, N.M.
Moscow: Vserossiiskii proletkul't, 1923. 69, [2] pp. 22x16,5 cm. Original publisher's covers. Careful restoration of the spine and a couple of margins of the pages, owner's signature on the t.p. (ink). First book. First and only edition. One of 3000 copies. The program theoretical work by art critic Nikolay Tarabukin (1889-1956), one of the ideologists of Proletkult, who at the time taught at VKHUTEMAS. Taraburkin is also associated with LEF, he was one of the theoreticians of the 'art for the masses', alongside with Gan and Chuzhak. Tarabukin wrote several key texts in 1920s that defined his revolutionary approach towards new art. He as many authors of the time was searching for understanding of patterns that form the art. But Tarabukin's work in this field was capital. He first wrote this book in 1916. The publisher asked Favorsky to write a review in which he stated that there were no literature on this subject in Russian. He also noted as a strong point of the work its integrity, for the sake of which "the reviewer does not recommend the publisher to change anything in the work", except for a polemical tone in relation to the problems of contemporary art. Obviously, this last chapter of the book was written by Tarabukin at the beginning of the Soviet era (analysis of the cubists and futurists in the context of the cultural tradition). Constructivist cover by Mikhail Sokolov (1885-1947). Together with Tarabukin Sokolov had developed an art school in Tver. They both were involved in proto-constructivist book design in Tver. Sokolov combined teaching at the studios in Tver … [Click Below for Full Description]

Opal Whiteley
Washington, D.C: THE FLOWER OF STARS A book of poems and fables by Oregon naturalist and mystic Opal Whiteley, best-known for her childhood diary The Story of Opal, the Journal of an Understanding Heart. This copy is signed by the author on the first page, dated one day after publication. The Flower of Stars, self-published in 1923 when she was 25 years old, was Whiteley's third and final book. (Facing the title page is a list of upcoming publications, but none of these ever materialized.) Anyone familiar with Opal's touching and tragic story would not be surprised by the book's contents, which are tender, lyrical, mystical, and slightly tinged with madness. The book was not a success, and there was no second printing. It is extremely rare: there is no other copy for sale anywhere online, and as far as I can determine the book has never been reprinted. This copy remains in reasonably good condition. The covers are clean, with some general wear, most noticeably about the edges. The binding is sound, except that one 4-page signature, including the title page, is starting to come loose. There is a paperclip mark affecting the first three leaves. About a dozen pages also have erasure marks where a child scribbled in the book with pencil (photo 7 shows some of the worst of it). The rest of the text has occasional minor signs of age or use but for the most part remains in fine shape. Opal Whiteley signed very few of her books. It is quite possible that no signed copy of The Flower of Stars will ever again appear for sale. Hardcover, 4.5" X 6", 95 pages. The photo of Opal does not … [Click Below for Full Description]

STRAVINSKY Igor
[Click Below for Full Description]

Photography] : [Infrastructure]
[Lynn, Massachusetts], ca.1923-1936. 148 black and white silver print photographs. Loose. Most approximately 8" x 10" bordered prints (about five slightly smaller): 70 double weight ; 60 single weight ; 18 linen backed. Each with a location and date in manuscript pencil to verso. A few with stamps of City agencies. Some mild, unobtrusive edge curling to each photograph. Approximately 1/3 of single weight prints with some creasing, light tearing or edge/corner loss. Overall group about very good. An archive of unusual documentary photography focused firmly on sidewalks in the suburban Boston city of Lynn, Massachusetts. Likely executed for a bureacratic purpose or purposes by multiple photographers, several prints bear stamps of the city's Tax Appeals Board and one of its Police Department. The focus of the archive is singular, documenting sidewalks, streets, and storefronts of Lynn, and while its specific motive for creation and assembly is not abundantly clear (accident investigation, repair assessments, and tax purposes, each come to mind), we are unconcerned. The net result is an exceptional photographic archive. Gritty, often remarkably executed urban landscapes of Lynn from the 1920's into the Depression.

Charlotte Bronte
l'Imprimerie Nationale de France, 1923. Large quarto, set up in Garamond type, printed in red and black on the press of the imprimerie Nationale de France in Paris. Illustrated with seventeen lithographic plates by Ethel Gabain. Numbered 113 of four hundred and ninety-five copies only (collated, complete). Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its title character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the Byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall. The focus of the novel is on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility. Charlotte Bronte has often been referred to as the 'first historian of the private consciousness' and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism With the original glassine wraps. CONDITION In paper wraps with a cloth slipcase binding. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Closed tears to the head of the spine, and front joint is cracked. Textblock is generally firmly bound, though loosening in places, with most of the plates detached. Pages are bright and clean, with just a few instances of spotting. Overall Condition: Good.

RADIGUET Raymond
Grasset. First edition, one advance (service de presse) copy.Handsome autograph inscription from Raymond Radiguet to Leon Daudet: « A monsieur Leon Daudet avec ma profonde admiration.
[Click Below for Full Description]
