[Click Below for Full Description]

Fitzgerald, F. Scott
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1923. Warmly inscribed by the author on the first blank: "1928 Princeton For Chad Davis from his devoted friend F Scott Fitzgerald." A Very Good copy of the book, spine gilt dulled and minor chipping at the spine ends. Front free end paper torn out, inscribed leaf and all other leaves integral to this copy. In a Very Good dust jacket that has light restoration at the spine ends and corners. Fitzgerald's only play, a satire on the American Presidency. "A resounding theatrical flop [that was] published by Scribeners on 27 April, 1923 in a print run of 7,650 copies retailing at $1.50, it opened for a week's trial on 19 November 1923 at Nixon's Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City. The first night was a debacle, with, as Zelda Fitzgerald put it in a letter, 'people so obviously bored' and some audience members walking out during the second act" (Tredell, Bruccoli). There is now conjecture that The Vegetable's problems stemmed from Fitzgerald's desire to focus on another project at hand: the development of The Great Gatsby. "He had begun to plan the novel in June, 1923, saying to Maxwell Perkins 'I want to write something new -- something extraordinary and beautiful'.But that summer and fall was devoted to the production of The Vegetable" (Mizener). Rare on the market due to its limited print run, The Vegetable is a testament to the diversity of Fitzgerald's literary career; and though his only attempt on the stage was not the soaring success he'd hoped for, Fitzgerald would ultimately find fame in Hollywood with his works capturing the imagination o … [Click Below for Full Description]

STRAVINSKY Igor
[Click Below for Full Description]

George G Harrap and Co. Large quarto. First Edition. Issued by Harrap in an edition of 2000 copies in 1923, 250 of which were distributed by Stokes in the US. With 48 richly colored plates interspersed with sheets of calligraphic text. Housed in a custom maroon quarter-leather clamshell case, with marbled paper-covered boards, gilt spine lettering and design. William Timlin was an artist and author, born in the UK. He studied at the Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle, and moved to South Africa in 1912 with his parents to finish his education. He worked there both as an architect and as an artist, and freely credits the influences of Aubrey Beardsley, Edmund Dulac, and Arthur Rackham in his work. He wrote and illustrated this novel, which also sports his own calligraphy. The story is a combination of science fiction and children's fantasy, wherein a man who believes in fairies has used their skill to construct a ship to travel into space and on to Mars, where they encounter a magical world. "The storyline is minimal, the book's strength resting on its exotic descriptions and beautiful illustrations" (Clute and Grant: The Encyclopedia of Fantasy US. The World Crisis Winston S. Churchill London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923-1931 Full first British edition set of six volumes, a remarkable set with five dated inscriptions from Churchill to his Aunt and significant annotations by her son, Churchill's cousin, regarding the Battle of Jutland Condition: Good This is an extraordinary inscribed and annotated British first edition set of Churchill's history of the First World War. Each of the five books (the 1916-1918 book was issued in two volumes) is inscribed and dated by Churchill to his Aunt Clara. Clarita "Clara" Jerome Frewen (1851-1935) was the eldest sister of Churchill's mother and wife of Moreton Frewen, the famously slipshod editor of Churchill's first book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force. Three inscriptions are dated pre-publication and all five are warmly personal, with Churchill using only his first name. The inscriptions alone would make the set a prize, but it is the second family association that makes the set a unique piece of history. The books passed to Clara's son and Churchill's first cousin, Captain Oswald Moreton Frewen (1887-1958). Oswald was a career naval officer who served under Churchill's leadership as First Lord of the Admiralty during both the First and Second World Wars. Oswald participated in every naval engagement in the North Sea during the First World War, after the war helped the Admiralty prepare the official history of the Battle of Jutland, and during the Second World War served as King's Harbour Master of Scapa Flow. THE ANNOTATIONS: Of note, according to the Frewen family, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rare first edition, first printing of "The Principle of Relativity" by Albert Einstein/Hendrik Lorentz/Hermann Minkowski/Hermann Weyl, published by Dodd, Mead and Company in New York in 1923. A collection of original memoirs on the special and general theory of relativity. With notes by A. Sommerfeld. With seven diagrams. In good condition without dustjacket. Light faint spotting/blemishing/soiling to boards from age, only visible from certain angles. Top and bottom edge of spine noticeably bumped with light fading. Spine label darkened from age and with a few tiny dampstains, but in good condition. Faint smudge/dampstain below spine label, but hard to notice. Board corners bumped. Top edge of rear board with a light/minor indentation/bump. Light speckling from age along top edge of pages/book, and a small dampstain (see images). Bottom edge of book with a more pronounced few brown drip dampstains on the right side, with a few tiny ones along the left. Faint speckling to that bottom edge as well (see images) Minor gash to corner of page 75-76, giving it a small tear at corner (as seen in images). Light vertical creasing to a few pages from weakening of the paper over the years; one chapter heading page with a longer but still minor crease line down it (not a crease line from being folded). Small, minor and light smudge on a couple preliminary pages and the first page of the preface, otherwise free of them (every page checked). Pages are deckle edged/rough cut, and due to the age and early technique of doing so, there is some light "shedding" where tiny, thin strips of paper … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jane Eyre
1923. Large quarto, set up in Garamond type, printed in red and black on the press of the imprimerie Nationale de France in Paris. Illustrated with seventeen lithographic plates by Ethel Gabain. Numbered 113 of four hundred and ninety-five copies only (collated, complete). Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its title character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the Byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall. The focus of the novel is on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility. Charlotte Bronte has often been referred to as the 'first historian of the private consciousness' and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism With the original glassine wraps. CONDITION In paper wraps with a cloth slipcase binding. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Closed tears to the head of the spine, and front joint is cracked. Textblock is generally firmly bound, though loosening in places, with most of the plates detached. Pages are bright and clean, with just a few instances of spotting. Overall Condition: Good.

Rosenthal, however, was very keen to secure Dulac for the commission, so when the artist produced 10 miniatures he bought the watercolours and the copyright. In October of the following year the publisher H. Piazza of Paris issued 1500 copies with Dulac's 10 coloured plates. Winston S. Churchill
The World Crisis Winston S. Churchill London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923-1931 Full first British edition set of six volumes, with a pre-publication inscription to a close associate and friend in the third book Condition: Very Good to Near Fine This is a full set of six British first edition, first printings of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War, inscribed and dated in the third book by Churchill (two days before publication) to his "oldest friend" Jack Seely. Inked on the ffep of 1916-1918 Part I in four lines is "Jack Seely / from / Winston S. Churchill / 1.3.27". John Edward Bernard Seely (1868-1947), 1st Baron Mottistone CB, CMG, DSO, PC, TD, was Churchill's close friend, comrade in arms, and political ally for nearly half a century. His life and career remarkably parallel and entwine Churchill's, with a particularly strong bond during the First World War, both in politics and on the Front. As boys, Seely and Churchill both attended Harrow. Both earned distinction in the Boer War and parlayed war records into election to Parliament in the "Khaki election" of 1900. Churchill and Seely quickly became political allies and confidantes. Both left the Conservative party, becoming Liberals in 1904. Both joined the Liberal Government Cabinet in 1908. In 1911 Churchill became First Lord of the Admiralty and in 1912 Seely became Secretary of State for War. Both were forced out of the Cabinet - Seely for the Curragh Incident in 1914 and Churchill for the Dardanelles in 1915 - and both subsequently chose to serve on the Front. Unpaginated. Wrappers show slight tide marks. Pages and plates are clean. Binding is sound. Overall very good. Grosz was a founder of the Berlin Dada movement. His drawings use satire to make fun of bourgeois during the Weimar Republic. From Wikipedia: Grosz did much to create the image most have of Berlin and the Weimar Republic in the 1920s. Corpulent businessmen, wounded soldiers, prostitutes, sex crimes and orgies were his great subjects. His draftsmanship was excellent although the works for which he is best known adopt a deliberately crude form of caricature in the style of Jugend. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

John Wisden
This 1923 Wisden Original Hardback is in at least very good condition. The front and rear boards are clear and unmarked and the corners are sharp. The gilt to the front board and the spine is in very bright, unrestored condition. The spine itself is in very good condition with a small mark, as is probably visible from the photograph, just towards the top right hand corner. There is very slight fading to the top centimetre of the front paste down but otherwise the front and rear yellow papers are in excellent condition and the front and rear hinges are strong. The remaining contents and photoplate are original, bright, unmarked and in fine condition. A really nice copy. We hope to list over the next few weeks a number of fine pre-war publisher s hardbacks including issues for the1890 s and the First World War and several years from the 1860 s and 1870 s all in fine condition. Please keep a look out for them. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Svevo, Italo [Ettore Schmitz]
Bologna, L. Cappelli Editore, 1923 (1 maggio), Rara edizione originale.
