Reminiscences of a Stock Operator Edwin Lefevre, 1923 First Edition / First Printing With the George H. Doran logo on the title page and their colophon on the copyright page. Gorgeous full leather binding with six raised bands on the spine and generous gilt work. In perfect collectible condition with no wear and clean pages. The so-called fictional Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, is in fact the result of a series of interviews made by Edwin Lefevre, a Wall Street journalist, with the renowned stock market trader Jesse Livermore, whose own book How to Trade in Stocks, was published in 1940, the year of his suicide. "More than any other Wall Street writer, Edwin Lefevre provided America with a peek at what really makes Wall Street tick - human nature... Described as being 'equipped with a genius for speculation - plus the brains not to pursue it.' Lefevre chose to educate his public about the stock market over some 40 years of financial writing, some fiction and some nonfiction. One point of praise about Lefevre is that it was always hard to tell fiction from fact. With pointed, logical views about how the market runs its course, he did his best to describe its function and technological mumbo-jumbo, leaving the biggest decision - whether or not to invest - up to his readers... Lefevre was a great source for juicy Wall Street gossip, presenting a wonderful, insider's accounts of the life of wild speculator, Jesse Livermore in his book Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. This book is one of my all-time favorites, and I don't think anyone should invest money he deems importan … [Click Below for Full Description]

STARK, Freya) KER, William Paton.
Oxford Clarendon Press 1923. Octavo. Original blue cloth, paper label on spine, plain endpapers, replacement paper label tipped-in at rear. Spine a little faded, spine and boards a little rubbed and bumped, label slightly browned, text block a little cocked and top edge lightly foxed, minor toning throughout, remains a very good copy. Photocopied frontispiece crudely added, with pencil annotation on the verso "From: Freya Stark, Traveller's Prelude, 1950. page 259." First Edition. Freya Stark's personal copy of Professor William Ker's lectures delivered as Professor of Poetry in Oxford between 1920 and 1922, which was given to Stark by Ker's sister just a few weeks after Ker's death on 17th July and bears is inscribed to her, "Freya Stark. 6th August 1923. Love P.M.K [Penelope M. Ker]". An elegant Reynolds Stone bookplate that Freya shared with her husband Stewart Perowne during their short marriage of 1947 to 1952 is stuck to the front pastedown. When Stark was a young woman in the 1910s she "considered [Ker] her adopted godfather, and said that he taught her all she knew of English literature, correcting her essays by writing underneat 'too many words'" (Moorehead, p. 24). Ker as a charismatic man and an inspirational teacher, who "always kept the spirit of an adventurer, wandering far afield when the spirit really prompted, carrying his students with him by his power of mind and temper" (ODNB). In 1917 Stark wrote that "really there is no one to come up to him; he is the best of friends and one feels so sure of him, that he would never change : that is the rarest and best … [Click Below for Full Description]

Diese Zeichnungen machen auch das Besondere dieser Ausgabe aus. Denn die Illustrationen von Rops, van Maele und Bayros sind aus ihren Originalwerken bereits bekannt. Hesse, Hermann
S. Fischer Verlag, Berlin, 1923. 152pp, top edge blue; elegantly bound with duplex textured endleaves in blocked black morocco with titles gilt-stamped; 225 x 154 x 18 mm. Second printing of the author's enduring classic, comprising the seventh through tenth thousand ("Siebente bis zehnte Auflage" on tp verso). Beautifully printed on fine wove book stock by Oswald Schmidt GMBH, Leipzig. Cover titling differs from the paper-board issue (author's name here in upper case roman font instead of gothic), suggesting a contemporary private binding (though unsigned). The ads include a separate announcement for a new numbered & signed edition of Knulp, illustrated by Karl Walser [p149]; plus 16 other Hesse titles [p150]. It bears noting that following the author's controversial attack on nationalism & militarism, 'O Friends Not this Noise' (3 November 1914: Neue Zürcher Zeitung), he earned the reputation of a traitor & shirker, leading to a general mistrust of Hesse long before the exemplary suppression of his books by the Nazis (for recommending & reviewing books by Jews). As he put it (in the foreword to War & Peace), "Long before the first victories of National Socialism, I was regarded by official Germany as a suspicious and essentially undesirable character, worthy at best to be tolerated. In the period of its omnipotence, Hitler's party gleefully avenged itself on my books, my name, and my unfortunate Berlin publisher." Occasioning a dramatic increase in the scarcity of original Hesse editions following the maniacal bonfires ignited to sweep the country of 'anti-German sentimen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reynaldo Luza (1893-1978), pre-eminent fashion artist, was born in Lima, Peru. He began training as an architect at the University of Louvain, Belgium, but returned to Peru at the outbreak of World War I, where he changed his studies from architecture to art. In 1918 he came to the United States, where he earned his living by contributing drawings to several fashion publications, principally VOGUE, HARPERS BAZAAR, and VANITY FAIR. In 1921 he joined HARPERS BAZAAR as the principal fashion artist, a position he was to hold for 27 years. Fisher, Thornton (1888 - 1975)
[New York: 1923]. Pen and ink on artist's board, each image captioned; inscribed (ses below), signed ("Thornton Fisher"), and dated ("April 26, 1923") by the artist. 1 vols. 11-5/8 x 17 inches. Opening Day, Yankee Stadium1923 - Inscribed to the Inventor of the Hot Dog. The cartoonist and illustrator Thornton Fisher drew several newspaper comics and panels in the 1910s, including 'Kitty Keys', 'Raising the Family', 'Betty's Brother Bobby' and 'The Marrying of Mary'. He also frequently treated baseball and sporting subjects, and this comic commemoration of the very first opening day at Yankee Stadium, is inscribed by Fisher to yet another legendary name associated with the Yankees: Harry M. Stevens, the famous concessionaire who introduced the hot dog at a baseball game at the Polo Grounds in 1907. When Yankee Stadium opened in 1923, Stevens was already a familiar figure to the players; in fact, Babe Ruth - a passionate lover of hot dogs - considered Stevens a second father. The centerpiece of the composite drawing shows the large figure of Babe Ruth, smiling and cocking his bat, with the caption beneath, "Babe opened the Yank Stadium by Poking a Home Run in the 4th, Scoring Dugan and Ward." Nowadays, of course, Yankee Stadium is known as "The House That Ruth Built." Fisher's inscription reads: "To my good friend Harry M Stevens from his sincerely and merrily / Thornton Fisher / April 26th / 1923" A priceless association, and a superb memento of the birth of a baseball legend. Matted and framed; fine.

Charlotte Bronte
l'Imprimerie Nationale de France, 1923. Large quarto, set up in Garamond type, printed in red and black on the press of the imprimerie Nationale de France in Paris. Illustrated with seventeen lithographic plates by Ethel Gabain. Numbered 113 of four hundred and ninety-five copies only (collated, complete). Primarily of the bildungsroman genre, Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of its title character, including her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the Byronic master of fictitious Thornfield Hall. The focus of the novel is on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility. Charlotte Bronte has often been referred to as the 'first historian of the private consciousness' and the literary ancestor of writers like Joyce and Proust. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism With the original glassine wraps. CONDITION In paper wraps with a cloth slipcase binding. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Closed tears to the head of the spine, and front joint is cracked. Textblock is generally firmly bound, though loosening in places, with most of the plates detached. Pages are bright and clean, with just a few instances of spotting. Overall Condition: Good.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Light vertical creasing to a few pages from weakening of the paper over the years; one chapter heading page with a longer but still minor crease line down it (not a crease line from being folded). Small, minor and light smudge on a couple preliminary pages and the first page of the preface, otherwise free of them (every page checked). Pages are deckle edged/rough cut, and due to the age and early technique of doing so, there is some light "shedding" where tiny, thin strips of paper … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rosenthal, however, was very keen to secure Dulac for the commission, so when the artist produced 10 miniatures he bought the watercolours and the copyright. In October of the following year the publisher H. Piazza of Paris issued 1500 copies with Dulac's 10 coloured plates. In December of the same year the book appeared in English as "The Kingdom of the Pearl" in two editions: one of only 100 copies signed; and another unsigned in a run of 675. To The Adventurous, E. Nesbit, pub Hutchinson & Co. n.d. 1923. 1st ed [1st state]. Octavo, 286 pp [first and last leaves blank] + 40 p publisher's catalogue ' For the Autumn, 1922 at rear. Burgundy cloth, front panel with scuff marks, slight loss of colour to bottom edge. One corner of rear board knocked, slight crumpling. Spine with a few small pin holes and scratch marks. Internally good, binding solid. Light paper abrasion where, perhaps a former inscription rubbed out to front pastedown. This was Edith Nesbit's own copy with her name written in her own hand with her address, 'Well Hall, Eltham, Kent' to front free endpaper. Her last published book before her death in 1924. This is presumably an advance copy given to her before she made her final move from Well Hall her home since 1899. Towards the end of her life she suffered from chronic bronchitis and had accumulated many debts at Well House. Her last novel 'The Lark' [1922] humorously fictionalises her attempts to cope with her financial worries. To The Adventurous is a collection of tales for adults previously published and collected from various periodicals. Includes The Pavilion', a horror story about a vampire plant. The title story has a supernatural theme, too. I can only surmise that knowing her financial worries her publisher pulled this volume together from fugitive pieces spread throughout her career. Nesbit [1858-1924] is famous for her children's books and stories, where she has been credited with inventing the modern novel for children, moving- largely - away from fantasy worlds and looking at children f … [Click Below for Full Description]
