DIXON, MAYNARD
(San Francisco: Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn and James McDonald), 1923, 1923. First edition, one of 250 copies. Grabhorn Press Bibliography 52. Edges a little worn; very good copy.. 4to, batik paper boards, leather spine label, gilt lettering, untrimmed. Frontis and six illustrations by Dixon. The only book by artist Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) published in his lifetime, a fine collaborative effort with the Grabhorn Press that combines his iconic art set in the West with his poetry about the West. The batik cloth and brown leather spine label is a latter issue binding by the Grabhorns, who were known to leave books in sheets and bind them as demand warranted - and often in a style that depended on materials at hand, which invariably differed from the earlier bindings, as is the case here.

[California]. [Livestock]
Diablo, Ca: Easton & Ward, 1923. About very good.. 89pp. Oblong octavo. Original blue cloth, front board gilt lettered. Hinges cracking; spine rubbed; corners worn. Light dust soiling internally. A scarce and fabulously illustrated promotional for the cattle being raised at the Blackhawk Ranch, south of Mt. Diablo, California, in 1923. The ranch was founded in 1917 by Ansel Mills Easton, an uncle of photographer Ansel Adams, and his son-in-law William Q. Ward. The introductory text states that, "No effort or expense has been spared in procuring foundation stock which represent the best efforts and conscientious work of generations of the World's greatest Shorthorn Breeders." The owners are particularly proud of the number of animals obtained from the apparently "celebrated herd" of the Scotsman William Duthie and his farm at Collynie, north of Aberdeen and Inverurie. Many majestic portraits of individual shorthorn cattle, and their painstakingly detailed lineages and biographies follow. The last few pages advertise the ranch's stock of shire horses, also with portraits. The ranch operated until 1975, when it was sold to a housing developer. OCLC locates four copies, at UC Davis, Berkeley, Cal State Pomona, and the Huntington.

Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamen on 4 November 1922. Carnarvon hurried to Luxor and the tomb was entered on 26 November. The discovery astounded the world: a royal tomb, mostly undisturbed, full of spectacular objects. Carter recruited a team of expert assistants to help him in the clearance of the tomb, and the conservation and recording of its remarkable contents. On 16 February 1923 the blocking to the burial chamber was removed, to reveal the unplundered body and funerary equipment of the dead king. Unhappily, the death of Lord Carnarvon on 5 April seriously affected the subsequent progress of Carter's … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scarce volume authored by Evelyn St. Bride Scratton, an English modernist writer who had a brief affair with Ezra Pound. This publication was one of six volumes in a soft series edited by Pound, entitled "The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose."
