(stamp-signed on rear turn-in), covers gilt in a Grolieresque design, raised bands, spines gilt in comaprtments with a stylized azured floral spray. With 16 photogravure portrait plates. Light wear to joints, occasional minor foxing, otherwise a fine set, internally clean and bright, and in lustrous bindings. During the period from the retirement of William Matthews to the establishment of the Club Bindery, there was no better binder in America than Henry Stikeman, who exhibited "extraordinary skill . . . in design, inlaying, and tooling." (Maser Collection) Stikeman's firm did high-end publisher's bindings as "bread and butter" work, and luxurious gilt-tooled bindings for collectors. Ethel Florence Richardson (1870-1946), who wrote under the pen name of Henry Handel Richardson was an Australian novelist, short story writer, and diarist whose writing did not attract notice until she was in her 60s, but then she gained considerable acclaim, being nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932. The present set is an historical account of the dukes of the great Howard family, the first volume being titled "Norfolk Line 957-1646" and the second "Suffolk Line 1603-1917." The best feature of the evening was the presentation of the Griff Clark Trophy to the Y. W. H. A. Basket ball team, champions of the city. " Text on reverse.         Autographed Letter Signed about childbirth on personal letterhead

Buffalo, NY, 1923. unbound. 1 page, 7.25 x 8.5 inches, Buffalo, New York, January 24, 1923, writing to one of his disciples about Internal Podalic Version, in full: "Your letter just arrived and I will answer it now just to be sure how glad I was to hear from you. I was also glad to hear that you are doing well. The OB work will come, it may be a little slow at first, but remember that the general work makes a good foundation. A man during general work makes friends who later can be used in the special times. Take your time & do not hurry, you will do Versions in time I am sure. Come & see me at anytime. Dr. Reynolds is still handling the Chloroform & will be glad to hear from you that everything is O.K." Also included is an original prescription written by Dr. Potter on his personal script pad for a Ziegler Cord Clamp, used to tie the umbilical cord during childbirth. The letter has natural folds and slight discoloration and creasing on the left side; still in very good condition. The prescription is in fine condition. World acclaimed but controversial American Obstetrician best remembered for his practice of the groundbreaking but dangerous method of childbirth called Internal Podalic Version; changing the position of the fetus within the uterus during childbirth (breach births). A pioneer in the study of childbirth, both his technique and the equipment he developed were unique to him and his few disciples -- yet he performed over 25,000 successful childbirths in a career than spanned half a century. Today doctors usually deliver by Cesarean section any fetus not in the proper position.

Typed Letter, signed ("Galli-Curci"), to the editor of "THE ETUDE", in Philadelphia, in response to his question "What are the 10 greatest musical masterpieces?"

Hotel Schenley, Pittsburg, 1923. 2 pp. on 2 sheets of hotel letterhead. 8vo. Torn at folds, some staining and slight wear. In grey morocco-backed clam shell box. 2 pp. on 2 sheets of hotel letterhead. 8vo. "the greatest melody of the 'folk-song' type is Swanee River". The great opera soprano (1882 - 1963) responds: "… You have asked me to choose what I believe are the ten musical masterpieces. It is an impossible question for no matter what ten one chooses it is easy to name another ten equally good. The fact is that there are vastly more than ten musical masterpieces, none of which can be called the 'greatest musical masterpiece' for there are so many forms of writing -- Symphony, Oratorio, Opera, Sonata, Nocturne, Waltz, Etude, Concerto and so on almost ad infinitum that a 'masterpiece' can only be designated as a 'masterpiece' in its idiom. However I shall try. Among Symphonies I should choose Beethoven's 5th. Of the violin concertos the Brahms D major says the most to me although it does not speak so familiarly the language of the violin as do some of the more showy 'bravura' types written with the virtuoso in mind. The literature for the piano is so rich that I shall not even attempt to single out a 'masterpiece'. One thinks of several Beethoven Sonatas, the two Chopin Sonatas, as well as his Ballads, Etudes, Nocturnes, Waltzes-all 'masterpieces.' The same is true of some of the Schubert, Hugo Wolf, Brahma and Schumann songs. I am unable to give an unprejudiced opinion as to the 'greatest opera;' like the fly on the oil painting I am too close to see the whole picture. 'Pelleas and Melisande' of Debussy, Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde' Verdi's 'Rigoletto' and 'Traviata' are representative of their type. No, the more I think of this question the more impossible it appears. I have not named the 'ten great musical masterpieces' because it cannot be done. I feel reasonably sure of only one-the greatest melody of the 'folk-song' type is Suanee [sic] River, I say this without hesitation …".

New York: Scribner's, 1923. Octavo. A unopened set. Includes the essays Walter Kauffman refers to in Religion From Tolstoy to Camus. The convenience of reading War and Peace in six volumes instead of one unwieldly huge volume makes this a favorite of many readers. Contents: v. 1-6, War and Peace; V. 7-9, Anna Karenina; V. 10, Childhood, boyhood, youth; V. 11 The Cossacks, Sevastopol, V. 12 The Invaders; V. 13, A Russian proprietor, V. 14 The Death of Ivan Ilyitch; V. 15 The Long Exile; V. 16 The Master and man.         The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a full British first edition, first printing, six-volume set, published between 1923 and 1931. Condition is quite respectable, superior to that of most sets we encounter and increasingly challenging to assemble thus. The final volume, The Eastern Front, was produced in smaller numbers, making it challenging to fill complete sets. This full first printing set features volumes ranging from very good to near fine. Shelf presentation is quite good, with nicely rounded spines, strong navy color, and bright gilt. Spotting, endemic to the edition, appears almost entirely confined to the page edges of four volumes. Previous ownership marks are limited to a name inked to the 1911-1914 front free endpaper, a Times Book Club sticker affixed to the lower rear 1915 pastedown, and the same, small London bookseller sticker affixed to the lower front pastedown of both 1916-1918 volumes. The binding of The Aftermath proved prone to unsightly blistering of the cloth; while the binding of this copy shows slight spine dulling and a little wear to the spine ends and corners, it is noteworthy for suffering none of the typical blistering of the cloth and the contents appear entirely free of spotting. The Eastern Front is a particularly fine example, with a strikingly bright, clean, and sharp-cornered binding. Churchill played a critical, controversial, and varied role in the First World War and his remarkable experience underpins his epic, six-volume history of the conflict. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Small area at top of front joint expertly and invisibly repaired. A fine example.Charles de Sousy Ricketts RA (1866-1931) was a versatile English artist, illustrator, author and printer, and is best known for his work as book designer and typographer from 1896 to 1904 with the Vale Press, and his work in the theatre as a set and costume designer. Ricketts was born in Geneva to a French mother and an English father. He grew up mainly in France and Italy. He began his studies in art at the City and Guilds Technical Art School in Lambeth, in 1882, after both his parents had died. At the Art School he met Charles Shannon (1863-1937), painter and lithographer, who would be his lifelong partner in both his artistic and personal life. On the advice of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, they settled in England rather than abroad. Ricketts became a celebrated and sought-after designer for the stage. "Mr Ricketts is infallible in his ideas on costume" observed The Times. Plays on which he worked included Oscar Wilde's Salome (1906), Laurence Binyon's Attila (1907), King Lear (1909), Bernard Shaw's The Dark Lady (1910), Arnold Bennett's Judith (1916), Shaw's Annajanska, the Bolshevik Empress (1918), Maurice Maeterlinck's The Betrothal (1920), Shaw's Saint Joan (1924), and Macbeth (1926).

        Alef-Bet

Verlag "Lasefer" S. D. Saltzmann. Printed by Richard Labisch & Co., Berlin 1923 - 8vo. 25 cm. 30 unnumbered pages, 27 of which have a chromolithographic, "illuminated" illustration of the Hebrew letter, and an object or thing which begins with that letter, as typical of ABC books, other than this one is using the Hebrew alphabet. The coloring, especially the profuse use of gold set against a gray slate backdrop, is riveting, and together with the general feel and style of the illustrations, relates easily to the Jugendstil book illustrations so prevalent in Germanic children's books of the period. Raban was a teacher of the Bezalel School of Art. The book is uncommon in its original edition, which this is. Moderate to arguably heavy wear and soiling. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
