Possible New Effects in Superconductive Tunnelling" in Physics Letters, Volume 1, 1962, pp. 251-253

North-Holland Publishing, Amsterdam 1923 - FIRST EDITION OF THE JOSEPHSON EFFECT, AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF A MACROSCOPIC QUANTUM PHENOMENON & THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PREDICTION OF THE PROPERTIES OF A SUPERCURRENT THROUGH A TUNNEL BARRIER. Josephson's paper predicts the mathematical relationships that govern the current and voltage across the weak link. Brian David Josephson (1940- ) is a Welsh theoretical physicist who received the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. The prize was divided between one half going jointly to Leo Esaki and Ivar Glaever "for their experimental discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in semiconductors and superconductors, respectively" and the other half to Brian Josephson "for his theoretical predictions of the properties of a supercurrent through a tunnel barrier, in particular those phenomena which are generally known as the Josephson effects." One result of matter being described as both waves and particles in quantum physics is "the tunneling phenomenon, which means that particles can pass through barriers that they should not be able to squeeze through according to classic physics. In 1962 [and in this paper] Josephson predicted unexpected results with superconductors, material that at low temperatures lacks electrical resistance. Without superimposed voltage, a current can result between two superconductors that are separated by a thin insulator. If a rectified voltage is added, on the other hand, an alternating current can result" (Nobel Prize Portal). CONDITION & DETAILS: Amsterdam: North-Holland Publishing. 4to (10.5 x 7.5 inches). Full volume bound in brown cloth over brown marbled paper boards; gilt-lettered at the spine. Tightly and solidly bound. Bright and clean inside and out. Near fine condition.         The Tomb of Tutankhamen. Discovered by the late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter.

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1923-33 - 3 volumes, large octavo. Original brown diagonally-ribbed cloth, titles gilt to spines and enclosing gilt scarab device on black ground to front covers, pictorial endpapers. Spines gently rolled, headcaps and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, mild spotting to edges, endleaves and very occasionally margins of vols. 2 and 3. A very good copy. Photographic frontispiece to each volume, 186 similar plates (many double-sided, and numbered accordingly). First edition of Carter's own account of the most spectacular archaeological discovery of the 20th century. "In the summer of 1922 Carter persuaded Carnarvon to allow him to conduct one more campaign in the valley. Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamen on 4 November 1922. Carnarvon hurried to Luxor and the tomb was entered on 26 November. The discovery astounded the world: a royal tomb, mostly undisturbed, full of spectacular objects. Carter recruited a team of expert assistants to help him in the clearance of the tomb, and the conservation and recording of its remarkable contents. On 16 February 1923 the blocking to the burial chamber was removed, to reveal the unplundered body and funerary equipment of the dead king. Unhappily, the death of Lord Carnarvon on 5 April seriously affected the subsequent progress of Carter's work. In spite of considerable and repeated bureaucratic interference, not easily managed by the short-tempered excavator, work on the clearance of the tomb proceeded slowly, but was not completed until 1932. Carter handled the technical processes of clearance, conservation, and recording with exemplary skill and care. A popular account of the work was published in three volumes, The Tomb of Tutankhamen (1923–33), the first of which was substantially written by his principal assistant, Arthur C. Mace" (ODNB).       Berlin, E.S. Weltkrieg, Kriegsberichte, Kriegsgeschichte. - Ganzleder-Vorzugsausgabe / Erstausgabe in sehr guter Erhaltung (Kassette mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren und an 2 Ecken ausgebessert, sonst tadellos) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 2000 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SCARCE FULL SET OF FIRST EDITIONS IN VERY FINE BINDINGS SIGNED BAYNTUN OF BATH. In Churchill’s own words: "(in) the five volumes of the WORLD CRISIS and the AFTERMATH I have told the story of the War from the British standpoint, and particularly from those positions of authority which I held myself. The war at sea, the expedition to the Dardanelles, and the campaigns in France and Flanders filled the stage. It was only here and there that brief summaries of the struggles of Russia with Germany and Austria in the East could find a place. In (THE EASTERN FRONT) the proportions are reversed. The tale both of the events leading to the War and of its battles is told from the Eastern theatre, and only brief, indispensable references are made to British and French affairs. I have attempted to give a general account of the whole War upon the Eastern Front, and the distant cannonade in France breaks only fitfully upon the ear. The primary theme arises in Vienna and covers the agonies of Central Europe. The familiar events of the West are seen only in their reactions upon the Eastern Front" [preface to THE EASTERN FRONT).       1923 - London: Dangerfield Printing Co., 1923. Coloured printed folding map, 365 x 440mm. Tiny repairs at folds. A larger format leaflet, published a decade before the introduction of the Beck 'electrical circuit' map. Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884-1947, known as Max), younger brother of Eric Gill, specialised in graphic design in the Arts and Crafts style. His most important commission was from the Imperial War Graves Commission, designing the script used on Commission headstones and war memorials, including the 'Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme'. His 'Wonderground Map of London', originally drawn as an advertising poster for London Electric Underground Railway Company in 1914, was such a success it is credited with saving the 'UndergrounD' advertising campaign.

Berlin: Pyramiden-Verlag, 1923.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-367 [368] [1-2: tipped in leaf with musical score on recto], original pictorial boards with blue cloth shelf back, spine panel stamped in gray and gold, top edge stained dark gray. First edition. A novel of super science in which a German astronomer and an old Norwegian scientist who has invented "Elavalill" travel in a space ship to Venus. Meanwhile, a misanthropic inventor with an earthquake machine attacks European cities. After the destruction of Paris, Germany is attacked by the French and Poles -- who suspect the Germans are responsible for the artificially created earthquakes. Germany is in chaos. After a few years the astronauts return from Venus and the earthquake machine breaks down. According to Sapra, despite the considerable scope, the novel remains an unfinished thing. It raises many questions, but gives few answers. "Jan Gramatzki" was probably physicist Hugh Ivan Gramatzki (1882-1957). He wrote radio plays and fantastic stories in addition to ELAVALILL (1923), his ambitious, but turgid and only slightly successful science fiction novel. Gramatzki also wrote DER KRISTALL (1917), an occult novel about the search for the philosopher's stone, and DIE ZUKUNFT DES FLUGWESENS (1913), a nonfiction book about the future of aviation. Brandt, Der deutsche Zukunftsroman 1918-1945, p. 358. Lexikon 2, p. 124. Bloch (2002) 1252. Boards warped, a very good copy. (#152278)

The two stories are here collected as the author's first book. "... a brand-new plot: humans reduced to the size of the atom, finding a whole new universe in the diminutive scale.       1923 - saying that he appreciates "the request you make in your letter of 26th. Unfortunately I am compelled to reply that it is quite beyond my physical powers nowadays to read and estimate the respective merits of any pieces of modern fiction by young writers, as Adjudicator of the Magazine Prize even supposing I were capable in other ways. I trust you may discover a fit person for the decision and am, Yours truly .", 1 side oblong 8vo., Max Gate, Dorchester headed paper, together with a photograph from a magazine, 28th September In 1898 Hardy published his first volume of poetry, Wessex Poems, a collection of poems written over 30 years. Hardy claimed poetry as his first love, and after a great amount of negative criticism erupted from the publication of his novel Jude The Obscure, Hardy decided to give up writing novels permanently and to focus his literary efforts on writing poetry. Hardy continued to publish poetry collections until his death in 1928. Although he did publish one last novel in 1897, that novel, The Well-Beloved, had actually been written prior to Jude the Obscure. In 1923 he published Late Lyrics and Earlier with Many Other Verses [Attributes: Soft Cover]
