Jacob's Room - first US edition SIGNED and dated

Harcourt Brace, 1923. Hardcover. Very Good. A first edition, first printing published by Harcourt Brace and Co. in 1923. Lacking the dust wrapper. Signed and dated in the year of publication by Virginia Woolf ('Virginia Woolf / Oct. 1923'). The book is very good+ and has a little light soiling to the top edge, some modest spotting to the boards, with a thin and low diagonal bump across the rear board, with some light pushing to the spine ends. There is a some light wear to the label's edges and a short marginal tear to the first page of text (not affecting the text). The book itself has an excellent provenance, having come from the estate of the noted actor Douglas Fairbanks, whose bookplate is found on the front pastedown. Woolf's third novel, which describes Jacob Flanders' life story from childhood through his adulthood until his death in World War I. Only one of 1500 copies printed. Exceptionally rare signed and especially so in the year of publication.

Salaris, cit. Viazza, cit. Cammarota, Futurismo, 333, 4. Italiano

Tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amen Discovered by the Late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter.

London Cassell and Company 1923 - First Edition of the Tomb of King Tut CARTER, Howard, and A.C. Mace. The Tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amen. Discovered by the Late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter. With 104 [and 153 and 156] illustrations from photographs by Harry Burton (of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). London: Cassell and Company, 1923 [and 1927 and 1933]. First edition. Three large octavo volumes (9 1/4 x 6 3/8 inches; 234 x 163 mm). xxiii, [1, blank], 231, [1, colophon]; xxxiv, 277, [1, colophon]; xvi, 247, [1] pp. With appendices by Douglas E. Derry, A. Lucas, P.E. Newberry, Alexander Scott, and H.J. Plenderleith in Volume II and Douglas E. Derry and A. Lucas in Volume III. Each volume with a frontispiece and numerous photographic plates. Half-titles in each volume. Original light brown cloth lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Front cover with black leather label stamped in gilt with a scarab. Pictorial endpapers in green and white. Some minor rubbing to covers, very minor wear to spine edges. All volumes with previous owner’s bookplate, on half-title in volumes I and III and initial blank in volume II. Inner hinges show cracking but holding. Volume III with some glue repair to front inner hinge. A bit of foxing and toning to text leaves and edges, but not affecting plates. Overall a very good copy with the gilt still very bright. "This narrative of the discovery of the tomb of Tut-ankh-Amen is merely preliminary: a final record of purely scientific nature will take some time, nor can it be adequately made until the work of investigation of the tomb and its vast material has been completed. Nevertheless, in view of the public interest in our discovery, we felt that some account without the loss of time, no matter how summary, was necessary, and that is the reason for the publication of this book. We have here for the first time, a royal burial very little disturbed in spite of that hurried plundering it has suffered at the hands of the ancient tomb-robbers, and within the shrines of the tomb-chamber I believe the Pharaoh lies intact, in all his royal magnificence."         Die Verstümmelten. Roman.

Rowohlt, Berlin 1923 - 269 S., 1 Blatt Anzeigen. Orig.-Halbleinenband. Alice Im Spiegelland [Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice found there].

8vo. Original mid-blue cloth lettered gilt to spine with a decorative title in gilt to upper board, mid-blue endpapers, preserved in pictorial dustwrapper; [vi], 7-121 + [ii]; with 12 fine, striking, and saturated, colour-lithographed plates in Expressionist style together with a decorative title in black and white; a very attractive copy indeed with mild dulling to spine gilt, internally fresh throughout with almost unavoidable even toning to text stock and a couple of insignificant edge nicks, protected by the remarkably elusive pictorial dustwrapper featuring an additional coloured plate not reproduced internally, the wrapper with light overall dusting, small loss to head of spine (maximum width 27mm), one or two short and closed edge tears, nicking to a couple of corners, and light lateral creasing to top edge. First edition illustrated thus. A very scarce edition indeed, not included in Lovett (the seminal bibliography of Alice which lists over 2000 titles) although a copy of (apparently) the same year, with only 5 coloured plates, and without a dustwrapper, is listed (689). Only two other copies of this book were traced in commerce at the time of cataloguing and neither possess the dustwrapper.

        Inscribed and signed notecard.

Paris: , Spring 1923. Single notecard, inscribed. Some light marks, very good condition. Enigmatic notecard inscribed by Joyce, "James Joyce Paris Easter 1923". Easter fell on 30th March in 1923, when Joyce had just recommenced writing, after a year's exhausted abeyance following the publicaton of Ulysses in Paris in 1922. Joyce had not written a line of prose for a year, but on 10 March wrote to his patron Harriet Shaw Weaver: "Yesterday I wrote two pages—the first I have since the final Yes of Ulysses. Having found a pen, with some difficulty I copied them out in a large handwriting on a double sheet of foolscap so that I could read them. 'The wolf may lose his skin but not his vice' or 'the leopard cannot change his spots.'" This was the first foray into Joyce's next great work, the Work in Progress that would become Finnegan's Wake.
