        Poems.

London: at the Florence Press, Chatto & Windus,, 1923. Selected and arranged in chronological order with a preface by H. J. C Grierson Litt.d. Octavo (220 x 143 mm). Contemporary tan and blue calf with brown calf inlay to covers depicting a Greek landscape with doric columns, title blocked in blind to spine, top edge blue, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers, red silk page marker laid in. Slight rubbing to extremities, light toning to head of rear cover, faint foxing to prelims and endmatter, short closed tear to foot of pp. 289-90; an excellent copy. First Florence Press edition, in a skilful custom binding by amateur bookbinder and bibliophile William Bernard Knobel (c.1875–1951). The work is signed by Knobel in ink on the foot of the rear free endpaper recto, "Bound by W. B. Knobel". It is subsequently signed to the head of the first blank, "Knobel", with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Knobel was a successful English doctor who published studies on various medical conditions and served in the Serbian Relief Unit during the First World War. A number of books from his extensive library were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1991; however works in his own intricately inlaid bindings are uncommon. This is an excellent collection of Byron's poetry, finely printed at the Florence Press, with the selection chosen by Sir Herbert Grierson (1866–1960) a literary critic and scholar who, "as a boy had been greatly taken by Byron", poetry remaining his "great passion" throughout his life (ODNB).

Very Good. Photo album compiled by J. Edward Ritter depicting his studies at the University of Washington's School of Forestry from the years 1923 to 1925. Photo album includes 226 corner-mounted photographs measuring between 2" x 3" to 5" x 7" with numerous photos on each leaf. Photo album is in very good condition with light wear to edges, light soiling on verso; photographs are in very good condition with some having light cracking or silvering affecting content but most without wear or soiling. The first half of the album focuses on friends and family outings with some images of University of Washington campus.         Photograph album documenting two itinerant roughnecks' travel through New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio until they found jobs at the Woodville Oil Field

New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, 1923. Album. Very good. This 8" x 6" album contains 37 b/w photographs, each measuring approximately 4.75" x 3". The crisp, well-composed snapshots are chronologically arranged and neatly glued to the album pages. Most have been captioned in white, but much of the writing has faded. The images show the men's Model T Ford, roadside tent camping, and a big campsite at Cleveland's Euclid Beach Park, as well as the rugged equipment, workmen, and the environment of a 1920s oil field. Ohio became home to one of the first oil booms in the United States in the 1860s after a blacksmith, William Jeffrey, drilled a successful well in Trumbull County. The discovery of oil near Woodville in 1892 started a boom that lasted until 1905 by which time the area was mostly drained although drilling and pumping continued in a few of the area's fields. A historically valuable visual record of life as a traveling roughneck in the eastern oil fields. Rather scarce. As of 2017, no other Ohio oil field photograph albums are for sale in the trade. There are no auction records for similar materials listed at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows no similar albums held in institutional collections.

Clergyman's Manuscript Ledger of Sermons Spanning 50 Years

Approximately 120 pages of neatly written manuscript entries.11¾ x 10¾ inches cloth boards. Covers worn and nearly detached, spine perished; some stray markings within; internally very good. Phenomenal manuscript volume kept by Rev. George Pannebecher (aka Pannebecker) , which spans five decades from 1923 to 1973. The Pennsylvania-born clergyman attended the University of Pennsylvania and Central Theological Seminary and was a hard-working itinerant preacher in the Reformed Church. Over the course of some 50 years, this noted preached delivered more than 4,100 sermons and gave another nearly 400 talks, each one painstakingly logged here. Pannebecher, who visits churches of many denominations, rescue missions, school cafeterias, hospitals, grange and Masonic halls, rotary clubs, festivals, television stations, etc. By the 1930s he began turning down invitations due to his increasingly demanding schedule which took him to places such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Miamisburg, and New Knoxville, Ohio; Berne, Bluffton, Danville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Terre Haute, Indiana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Chicago; Detroit; Jeannette and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Gulfport, Mississippi; Milltown, New Jersey; Pass-a-Grille.         The Mario Feninger Collection of Music for Piano in Practical Editions, Approximately 2,600 items

Internationally-recognized pianist Mario Feninger was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1923. He received his initial musical training from his mother, Teresa de Rogatis, a pianist and composer. His early performances at the Salle Gaveau in Paris and at Wigmore Hall in London received highly favourable reviews. He went on to an extensive career in the concert halls of Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and North Africa. Feninger was particularly noted for his renditions of Chopin andLiszt; he was also a noted exponent of the piano works of Busoni. He died in Los Angeles, where he had lived and taught for many years, in 2016. Mr. Feninger's collection of over 2,600 practical editions of piano music encompasses music of the 18th through 20th centuries. The works of over 200 composers are represented, with particular strengths in editions of Albeniz, Alkan, J.S. Bach (including the Bach-Busoni transcriptions), Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms, Busoni, Chopin, Debussy, Gottschalk, Liszt, MacDowell, Moszkowski, Palmgren, Rachmaninoff, Rubenstein, and Saint-Saëns. Many of the scores carry Feninger's manuscript monogram and occasionally a place and date, presumably referring to either acquisition or, possibly, to performance. The scores are mostly 20th century publications and are in either original publisher's wrappers or boards. Virtually all of the editions show some signs of use, including occasional staining. Overall condition ranges from good to very good for music of this nature. A complete inventory of the collection is available upon request. For more information on the life and career of Mario Feninger see mariofeninger.com.

Autograph Letter Signed to the actress "My dear Catherine [Willard]"

1923. [to the actress to be "Lena"] Oyster Bay, NY: two pages (first and third pages of stationery of "Effendi Hill"), dated Tuesday 8 May 1923. Signed "J. Conrad". Catherine Livingstone Willard was born in Dayton Ohio in 1895 (?), lived her childhood years first in Cincinnati and then in England, spent some theatrical-training years in France, and in 1915 returned to England where her Exeter debut was in "The Taming of the Shrew." After a few more years with the Old Vic in London, she returned to America in 1921 (two years before this letter), and went on to have a 25-year career as a leading lady, first in Boston and then on Broadway. (Her second husband, from 1931 to 1945, was Ralph Bellamy.) Her mother Grace lived in England and was a journalist and interior designer -- who had worked on the interior of "Oswalds" for the Conrads. When Conrad and Henry Irving were contemplating a stage version of the novel VICTORY (it never happened), Conrad recommended Catherine as the actress to play Lena.~This letter was written while Conrad stayed at "Effendi Hill" on Long Island -- named for FND, Frank N. Doubleday, his American publisher; having arrived on the Tuscania nine days earlier, this was Conrad's first and last trip to America, as he died a little over a year later. The text of the letter reads:~Just a word to tell you that I am coming to Boston next week, on a tour arranged by my dear friends and hosts in this country Mr & Mrs Doubleday. | I will let you know more when the dates are fixed. But it is certain that we will see each other before long. | Thank you for your letter. Please thank from me Mama Grace for hers, with my love. In haste ever your affectionate old friend J. Conrad~The letter is in fine condition (once folded).

John Pierpont Morgan Signed Proxy At Jeckyl Island.

1923. A proxy boldly signed by John Pierpont Morgan, Jr. as a shareholder and appointing five men as his proxies, who were George F. Baker, Walter B. James, Edward S. Harkness, Robert S. Brewster, and R.T. Crane, Jr., at the Annual Meeting of the Shareholders of Jekyl Island Club." Double matted and framed, with a photograph of Morgan. The entire piece measures 13.25 inches by 17.25 inches. Rare and desirable. Created in 1885, the Jekyll Island Club, limited to 100 individuals in order to maintain exclusivity, counted among its members newspaper tycoon Joseph Pulitzer, department store magnate Marshall Field, railroad heir and philanthropist William K. Vanderbilt, Equitable Life Insurance founder Henry Hyde, and banker and financier J. Pierpont Morgan. Famously, it was at the elite club in November 1910 that a committee of senators, bankers and treasury officials secretly met to draft legislation to create the U.S. Federal Reserve. The Jekyll Island Club declined during the Great Depression and, despite a restructuring of membership fees, closed during World War II.

First Bodoni edition, one of 220 copies, printed on vellum-paper. Epipsychidion (the title means "to/for a little soul/Psyche") was Shelley's intense lyrical love poem addressed to the "poor captive bird" Teresa "Emilia" Viviani, a beautiful Italian countess of 19 years who was "imprisoned" in St Anna convent while her father sought her a suitable husband. It was first published in 1821, in Pisa, in a very small edition.

John Pierpont Morgan Signed Proxy At Jeckyl Island.

Trest D. E. Istoriia gibeli Evropy [Trust D. E. A History of the Demise of Europe]

Gelikon, Berlin 1923 - First Edition. Octavo (23 × 16 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Vladimir Konstantinovsky; 196 pp. Rear wrapper beginning to detach; light wear and a few nicks to overlapping wrapper edges; a fragile title, but still about very good. First edition of Erenburg's dystopian novel about the destruction of Europe by a disillusioned immigrant to America, who sets in motion a plan to gradually exterminate the continent. A vivid expression of Erenburg's "hatred for the mercantile European society based on success, money, and egotism" (Kolesnikoff, 76). A Soviet writer, journalist, and translator who spent much of the 1920-30s in Western Europe, Erenburg (1891-1967) maintained close ties to émigré circles, avant-garde artists, and left-leaning writers while serving as a Soviet press correspondent. His novel The Thaw (Ottepel', 1954) would lend its name to the period of "De-Stalinization" under Khrushchev. He was the most frequently published author of Gelikon, a publishing house founded by Abram Vishniak which specialized in contemporary literature by writers such as Andrei Bely, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Viktor Shklovsky. Scarce in the trade, especially in the original pictorial wrappers by Vladimir Konstantinovsky. His motif was used in 1924 by Karel Teige and Otakar Mrkvicka for the front wrapper of the Czech translation. With additional typographic elements used on the page layout. Getty 162. This unique copy was handled by the legendary Paris collector and book dealer Andrei Savine, who specialized in Russian emigre publications in the 1970-90s; the binding may likewise be by him. His price, which corresponds to the record digitized by UNC Chapel Hill, is written in pencil on the rear fly leaf: "1500,-." It apparently passed through Savine's shop in 1985 and appears to be the only copy of this title he sold. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
