True Travellers. A Tramp's Opera in Three Acts.

London, Jonathan Cape, 1923. Square 8vo. Original cloth-backed marbled boards, paper labels on spine and upper cover; 4 full-page illustrations printed in green and black, one further full-page illustration and 10 vignettes, all by William Nicholson; light rubbing to extremities, free-endpapers lightly browned, but a very good copy. First edition, this being one of 100 copies, not numbered, inscribed and signed by W.H. Davies, with three minor corrections in his hand to the text. The Welsh poet and writer spent considerable time in the US as a hobo, published in 1908 The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp and this opera, which 'was to be produced at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, where The Beggar's Opera had been successfully revived, but the scheme fell through' (ODNB). This copy is inscribed to the English composer of several successful operas (e.g. The Immortal Hour, 1922), Rutland Boughton (1878-1960), which indicates that he was probably envisaged to compose the score for this libretto. Both Davies and Boughton had Shaw as mentor and shared his Socialist outlook.

Geo Milev's core almanac of Bulgarian Avantgarde

Milev, Geo, ed.: Almanah vezni. Literaturen sbornik [Almanac Scales. Literary anthology]. With 1 publisher's emblem , 5 full-paged illustrations, one of them in colour, and 18 illustrations. Stara Zagora and Sofia: Vezni (Pridvornata Pechatnitsa), 1923. 8vo. 104 [12, publisher's advertisments] p. Original sewn publisher's wrappers with dark red typografic title printing on brown stock. Key publication of Bulgarian modernism in which it's leader Geo Milev sought to summarise and sustain the progressive and international orientation of his magazine »Vezni« (Scale, 1919-22). The texts are penned by Richard Dehmel, Carl Einstein, Ilya Erenburg, Vladimir Mayakovsky and other representatives of European avant-garde, as well as by leading Bulgarian proponents such as Chavdar Mutafov, Lamar, Nikolay Raynov, Khristo Yasenov and Peyo Yavorov, who are also artistically portrayed, mainly with wood-cuts (e.g. by Geo Milev and Ivan Milev). Published in the year of the September communist uprising and the ensuing suppression to which Geo Milev and Yasenov were to fall prey in 1925, the almanac and its cover design of geometric abstraction clearly demonstrates the proximity of Milev's circle to the constructivist aesthetics of the Russian revolutionary avant-garde artists like El Lissitzky. The almanac features reproductions of works by Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Alfred Kubin, Oskar Kokoschka, Frans Masereel, Geo Milev, Ivan Milev, Henri Ramah, Sirak Skitnik and others. Outstanding are four tiny but highly expressive wood-cut vignettes by Mircho Kachoulev representing the four seasons and an abstract coloured lino-cut of Vassil Zahariev. - The appendix contains a listing of international magazines of the avant-garde from 16 countries, i.a. »Broom«, »Ça Ira«, »MA«, »Nova Sztuka«, »De Stijl«, »Der Sturm«, »Ultra«, »Veshch« and »Zenit«. Former faults at top and bottom of spine, edges, corners professionally restored, cover with owners's remark ink and partly slightly stained, inside well preserved copy of this important almanac, of outstanding rarity.         The Faerie Queene Disposed into Twelve Bookes Fashioning XII Morall Vertues [WITH] Spenser's Minor Poems

[Chelsea]: The Ashendene Press(1923 / 1925), 1923. Limited Edition. Vellum. Near Fine. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. 635 p. Limited editions, with the Faerie Queene being one of 180 printed on paper (there were also 12 printed on vellum) and the Minor Poems being one of 200 printed on paper (with an additional 15 being printed on vellum). The two volumes were designed to be companion volumes as St. John Hornby noted in his bibliography; they were printed and bound in a similar manner, and this set comes with a custom slipcase to house both volumes. Many have noted the plea he made opposite the colophon page in the Faerie Queene to future binders not to crop the edges; he had designed a "book beautiful" and wished it not to be desecrated. The volumes are indeed lovely, printed in double columns with a liberal use of red and blue ink, with large intials designed by Graily Hewitt in red and blue; in the Minor Poems there is a larger use of blue than in any of the other books.***DESCRIPTION: The two volumes bound uniformly, with the binding stamp of "WHS" on the turn-in of the back board in the Faerie Queene, quarter bound in brown cowhide with gilt lettering on the spines, ivory vellum sides over thick boards, red and blue ink used throughout as referenced above, text pages in double columns, type Subiaco on Batchelor paper bearing the Knight in Armour water-mark; elephant folio size (almost 17" tall), pagination: Faerie Queene, (i-viii), 1-406, colophon (407); Minor Poems (i-iv), (1)-216 with colophon on final page. Both volumes are housed in a custom slipcase with a brown leather spine and white paper sides, with a black leather spine label with gilt lettering; there is an inner slipcase covered in brown cloth, divided, with each compartment having a folder of brown cloth on the outside, lined with velvet inside, into which the two volumes fit and are protected.***CONDITION: Both volumes near fine, the brown leather spines remain deep in colour, the vellum boards are of a natural dark shade; internally both volumes have strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interiors are clean and bright, and they are entirely free of prior owner markings; there is one shallow scratch mark to the back board of Faerie Queene and both volumes have light foxing to the preliminary and final blank leaves as well as to the text block edges, both have some offsetting to the free endpapers from the leather spines, and the front free endpapers of both volumes have some darkening from smoke damage (no odors) near the top and bottom edges. The custom slipcase is near fine with some faint soiling to one side, the inner box and two folders are fine.***CITATION: Hornby 32 and 35.***POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, and depending on destination some additional postage may apply; please contact us for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Der Fasciculus Medicinae des Johannes de Ketham.

Monumenta Medica, 1. Hrsg. v. Henry E. Sigerist. - Mailand, E.Lier & Co., 1923. Gr.-Folio, (36 pp. mit 6 Holzschnitten), pp.37-57, (3) pp., 4 Abb., mont. 13 Tafeln, orig. Man darf wohl sagen monumental. XI) geweiht." His name was probably corrupted by the printers to Ketham. The great importance of this book is that it includes the first anatomic (book) illustration of any kind."
