      Duckworth 1923 - The First UK Printing published by Duckworth in 1923. The BOOK is in near Fine condition being free from inscriptions and erasures. The patterned boards are wonderfully bright. The spine is complete and not toned (This title is usually found with the spine having loss and damage). Some pages remain uncut. Light spotting to the text block and to a few pages in places. The original thin paper glassine WRAPPER is present and is in near Fine condition. It is now protected in the removable Brodart archival cover. Accompanied by a loose 'Ex Libris Harold Acton' bookplate which has been Signed to the upper edge by Harold Acton. He has also written the name of the artist (Karnac Sonna) of the bookplate illustration to the lower edge. The author's scarce first book - a collection of poetry. Original wax seal, signed and numbered by the artist; 2 title sheets and 2 contents sheets in Hebrew and English, printed in black and umber, 12 loose woodcut prints in original paper mounts printed in black. The complete portfolio of Rubin's woodcut prints. Reuven Rubin (born Zelicovici, 1893–1974) was one of the most prominent Israeli painters and Israel's first ambassador to Romania. He was one of the pioneers on the Eretz-Yisrael painting style. His art is said to be reflecting the light and spirituality of the Land of Israel. The Eretz-Yisrael painting school was a movement active in the Holy Land during 1920s and 1930s. These artists rebelled against the Bezalel school, which according to the rebels was too 'Galut-riddled' (Galut meaning exile or Diaspora in Hebrew). They were the voice of the Modern art in the Holy Land, who looked for new ways of artistic expression. The God Seekers combine images of Jewish tradition and mysticism with views of the Holy Land at the time of the Third Aliyah. Some of these motives reoccur later in Rubin's oils (such as The Dancers of Miron). Some Israeli art critics compared these images to German Expressionism and saw in them an expression of national and spiritual resurrection. In 1924 Rubin sent this album as a gift to Herbert Louis Samuel - the High Commissioner of Palestine at the time, who is also known to be the first practising Jew (although noted for his personal atheism), to serve as a Cabinet minister and to become the leader of the British Labour party. The album was sent back to Rubin with the explanation that the Commissioner does not sympathise this sort of art.

      Berlin: S D Saltzmann (Hasefer), 1923. Limited edition, numbered 6 of 500. Hardback, bound in the original cloth covered boards with gilt marginal decoration and insets to boards and simple design to spine. Highly decorative endpapers. 33 × 25.5cm, unpaginated. Signed to the limitation page by Ze'ev Raban. Ze'ev Raban's beautifully illustrated Solomon's Songs of Songs, and their celebration of love. The book is printed right to left in the Arabic form with colour title page and twenty five tipped in colour plates by Raban. Each verse in rendered in hebrew to the image with an English translation opposing, and the text page with hand coloured initials, title scroll and chapter / verse. All plates have the original tissue guard. Ze'ev Raban (born Wolf Rawicki, 1890-1970) was a leading painter, decorative artist, and industrial designer of the Bezalel school style, and was one of the founders of the Israeli art world. Condition: The cloth binding is rather grubby with tanning and foxing, and light rubbing to the corners and spine ends. The front endpaper (ie the rear endpaper to Western printing) is detached and the hinge is crack but still securely bound. Light tanning to page margins and light spotted foxing to prelims and title page. The main body of text is in good clean condition with a little browning to the tissue guards. The inner binding is secure. Overall, an attractive if worn copy of this rare title.. Signed by The Artist. First, Limited Edition. Cloth. Good.

First edition. Actually printed by Wasmuth in Germany and distributed with titles and text in different languages, this is a pretty comprehensive pictorial stock take of the architectural heritage of China, including fine landscapes, often with traditional carriages and travellers. 'The German architect and historian Ernst Boerschmann (1873-1949) spent his professional life engaged in research on traditional Chinese architecture ... When Ernst Boerschmann first arrived China in 1902 as a member of the German army he was already planning to undertake work on architecture' (Eduard Kögel in China Heritage Quarterly, online). - This is Boerschmann's main work, and an enduring record of traditional Chinese architecture, much of which has since been lost.

Contemporary blue sheep over cloth boards, gilt spine, small chip to lower board, corners slightly bumped. A very fresh example of this uncommon émigré edition that comprises selected articles by the famous Russian historian exploring the personality of Alexander I, his epoch and associates. Sergey Melgunov (1879 – 1956) was a Russian historian, publicist and politician known for his opposition to the Soviet government and his numerous works on the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War. In the pre-Revolutionary years, Melgunov established a publishing house Zadruga where he published over 500 books and a journal Golos minuvshego ("The Voice of the Past"). After the Bolshevik October Revolution, he became an active opponent of Lenin's government and joined the anti-Soviet Union of Revival of Russia, which advocated an armed overthrow of the Bolshevik regime. He was arrested and sentenced to death in 1919, then reprieved, with the sentence commuted to imprisonment. Released in 1921, Melgunov eventually settled in Paris, where he continued his historical research and edited several émigré journals. The edition includes thirteen articles written within a period of 10 - 15 years before the revolution and covers the reign of Alexander I, analysis of personalities of the tsar, Rostopchin and Barclay de Tolly, the Great Patriotic War, and Russian society in the post-war years.       FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF KENNETH ARROW'S SEMINAL PAPER LAUNCHING THE FIELD OF MODERN HEALTH ECONOMICS. Arrow's paper is famous for many reasons - its "dazzling accuracy", its creation of an entirely new field of study, and also the skill and beauty with which it was written. "One is struck by the frequency with which a single sentence or paragraph opens up a concept, hypothesis, or relationship which will, years later, be expanded into a major subject of research" [for example the issue of 'trust' as it relates to medical care] (Fuchs, Health Affairs, March 8, 2017). To date, Arrow's paper remains "one of the most widely cited articles in the field of health economics" and is sometimes referred to as "the article that launched a thousand studies" (Savedoff, Public Health Classics, BWHO, Feb. 2004, 82). In 1963 Arrow was already a highly regarded economist; by the time of his death in early 2017 many considered him "the foremost economist of the second half of the 20th century" (Fuchs). In 1963, however, he had never written about the economics of health care. The Ford Foundation, attempting "to promote greater exchange between economists and other professions in the areas of health, education and welfare", extended an invitation to Arrow to apply his "pioneering research," on asymmetric information in markets to the issue of medical care (ibid). Arrow was fascinated by "the problems caused by asymmetric information in markets. In many transactions, one party (usually the seller) has more information about the product being sold than the other party. Asymmetric information creates incentives for the party with more information to cheat the party with less information; as a result, a number of market structures have developed, including warranties and third party authentication, which enable markets with asymmetric information to function" (Wikipedia). Before he could even begin to approach the task at hand, Arrow had to educate himself about health care and insurance - like many other economists, he had avoided the field. The paper Arrow ultimately wrote, this paper, did more than exceed the Ford Foundation's goals, it created the field of health economics and remains highly influential to this day. Prior to the article's appearance, economists had largely limited their research to descriptive and institutional studies. After Arrow's paper, the economics of health care became not just a respectable field of study, it was considered an "exciting" one (Fuchs). In this paper, Arrow characterized the differences between the healthcare market and normal competitive markets with regard to (1) the nature of demand - medical services are irregular and unpredictable (2) the expected behavior of the physician (3) product uncertainty (4) supply conditions (5) pricing practices. Arrow endorsed the view that 'the laissez-faire solution for medicine is intolerable' and that the delivery of health care deviates in fundamental ways from a normal free market, thus requiring government intervention to mitigate those deviations. Arrow wrote: "the operation of the medical-care industry and the efficacy with which it satisfies the needs of society differs from… a competitive model… If a competitive equilibrium exists at all, and if all commodities relevant to costs or utilities are in fact priced in the market, then the equilibrium is necessarily optimal" (Hastings, Kenneth Arrow on Healthcare Economics, AHEB, March 7, 2017). The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1972 was awarded jointly to John R. Hicks and Kenneth J. Arrow "for their pioneering contributions to general economic equilibrium theory and welfare theory" (Nobel Prize Committee). CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. Original wraps, continually paginated 941-1232. PREMIÈRE ÉDITION du récit de voyage de l'auteur en Russie, effectué au cours de sa mission humanitaire en Sibérie. Mandaté par le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge, George Montandon quitta Genève en 1919, accompagné d'autres médecins, notamment son confrère Jules Jacot-Guillarmod. Ils embarquèrent pour les États-Unis, puis gagnèrent le Japon au mois de juin, où ils reçurent des médicaments ainsi que de précieuses lettres de recommandations du ministère de la Guerre qui leur permirent de visiter de nombreux camps de prisonniers. En septembre 1919, la mission étant officiellement terminée, Jacot-Guillarmod repartit avec les autres membres de l'équipe en Europe. Montandon, de son côté, se rendit au Japon où un télégramme de la Croix-Rouge l'attendait : on lui demandait d'organiser le rapatriement des prisonniers, tâche dont il s'acquitta avec succès. Il sera arrêté en 1921 par la police de sûreté russe, la Tcheka, pour suspicion d'espionnage ; échappant de peu à la fusillade, il quittera le pays par l'Ouest en compagnie d'une jeune russe, Maria Konstantinovna Zvyaghina, qu'il épousa au cours de son périple. Récit picaresque dans lequel l'auteur raconte toute sa traversée en Sibérie, fournissant un témoignage sur une Russie bolchevique qui le fascinait. Exemplaire enrichi d'un envoi autographe de l'auteur et de sa femme Mouchka à sa mère. Il est également truffé d'annotations manuscrites au crayon à papier (corrections et commentaires), d'une main non identifiée. Il s'agit certainement de la belle-mère de George Montandon, Séraphine-Henriette Montandon-Blaiselion (à la mort de sa femme en 1896, James, le père de George, se remaria avec sa cousine germaine Séraphine-Henriette). En effet, à la page 234, lorsque Montandon aborde la question de la privation de vote pour les riches en Russie, on lit dans la marge ce commentaire manuscrit : « Tu serais aussi parmi ceux qui seraient atteints mon fils qui as bénéficié des avantages de [nos] grands-parents Montandon de la Brévine.       [Paris, 1923]. Gouache and gold leaf on artist's board, 135 x 120 mm (image); initialled 'G.B.' in the image lower right; framed. The ballet l'Oiseau de Feu (The Firebird), choreographed by Michel Fokine to music composed by Stravinsky, was first performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at the Paris Opera in 1910, with Tamara Karsavina as principal dancer. The costume designs of Leon Bakst used in this production were a clear inspiration for this design by George Barbier, created for one of the Ballets Russes' 1923 productions in Paris. George Barbier is regarded as one of the greatest French illustrators of the early twentieth century, and a master of Art Déco design. His rich, flamboyant style was perfectly suited to theatre and ballet costume design as well as to haute couture fashion illustration. In addition to collaborating with the Ballets Russes he worked alongside Erté in designing sets and costumes for the Folies Bergère. He also designed jewellery for Cartier. A major retrospective of Barbier's work was staged at the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice in 2008-09. (The English language edition of the exhibition catalogue, George Barbier: The Birth of Art Déco, was published in 2009 by Rizzoli, New York). Provenance: Collection of Yves Plantin. Flexible faux-alligator Fabrikord with gilt emblem to front and moire endpapers and printed on ivory India Bible paper with gilt edges. Housed in gold box, with "Information for the Reader," publisher's prospectus, and Lightbearers information cards laid in at bottom. Covers are sturdy and square showing some scuffing down joints, otherwise just very light edgewear and a couple small smudges to back. Some expected rippling along page margins from thinness of paper, largely at bottom corner and not involving text. Ink and illustrations are bold and bright. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Inlaid cards are clean and crisp with sharp edges. Box shows a clean split at one corner with some scuffing along edges and face and a patch of toning to interior bottom from an unrelated newsclipping, but is still sturdy and solid. Not an ex-library copy.Founder of The Lightbearers, Fersen's guide to "Nature's Forces and Laws" and the "Fundamentals of All Being" encourages a course of philosophical and spiritual reflection and growth that in many ways anticipates later "New Age" thought and the "Law of Attraction." His work is said to have influenced thinkers from Edgar Cayce and Annie Besant to Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla among many others. The reader's information card mentions this being the first use in the United States of India Bible paper, and that the book itself, through its materials and design, is "powerful magnetic center for Universal Harmony to manifest itself." A very nice example of Fersen's classic text, rather scarce when complete with box and additions.
