        FRANS MASEREEL

Berlin, Germany: Axel Juncker, 1923. Berlin, Germany: Axel Juncker, 1923. leather, title gilt-stamped on spine, five raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers. Masereel, Frans. small 4to. leather, title gilt-stamped on spine, five raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers. 177, (3) pages. Text in German. First edition, handbound, limited to 150 numbered copies. A survey of the life and work of the Expressionist printmaker and illustrator Frans Masereel (1889-1972), who has been called the greatest woodcut artist of the twentieth century. Though the Belgian artist's work was banned by the Nazis and widely distributed in Communist countries, he resisted politicized art and party affiliation, condemning oppression, war and violence. His woodcuts are remarkable for their lack of traditional hatching to create light and shadow. Instead, Masereel focused on the stark and powerful contrast between unmediated, depthless black against the paper. His images tend to be packed from edge to edge--with very few or no empty spaces, there is no respite for the eye. The forceful graphic quality of his woodcuts are stirringly sympathetic to the printed text, as both insist on high contrast and perfect clarity. Photographic portrait tipped-in. Edges of spine and raised bands rubbed. Covers lightly soiled.

Gestalten des Todes. Ein Totentanz des Weltkrieges. Blätter I bis XV (alles Erschienene)

Bonn und Leipzig: Kurt Schroeder. 1923 . Bonn und Leipzig: Kurt Schroeder. 1923 . 15 plates (some in col)., loose as issued in orig. publishers paper folding map, complete with dedicationpage. 24.5x32.5cm., oblong. Plates in very good condition, fragile folding map with some minor damage and traces of use (top of spine torn). Rare item!!

Supplement to Dictionary of the Vernacular or Spoken Language of Amoy (also titled "Supplement to Dictionary of the Amoy Colloquial Language").

Shanghai: Commercial Press, Limited, 1923. First Edition. - Black half leather binding, with gilt titles to the spine, charcoal grey cloth to the boards, all edges red. Size: 27 x 20.5cm. Pages: v + 276. This scarce book is a comprehensive supplement to Carstairs Douglas' monumental "Dictionary of the Vernacular or Spoken language of Amoy" of 1873. Barclay prepared this at the invitation of his Amoy colleagues, to reflect "a great change (that) has come over China. Western civilisation, to an increasing extent, has been welcomed, and new ideas in every department of thought and action have filled the minds of the people. These new ideas have demanded for their expression new terms, the addition of which has much enriched and extended the language. So that, especially of late years, it has been increasingly felt that the Dictionary . could no longer be considered a sufficient guide to the student of the language". The work includes a Preface, the Supplement itself (A-Z in double columns, with Amoy characters, pronunciation and brief definitions), and an alphabetical list of Place Names Frequently Met With. Thomas Barclay (1949-1935) was a Scottish-born missionary to Formosa (Taiwan). He met Carstairs Douglas (also a Scottish missionary) at Divinity School, who encouraged him to move to Formosa, and spent a year teaching him the language in Amoy. Barclay also oversaw the translation of the Bible from English into Taiwanese, and mediated with the Japanese during Tainan's capitulation to them in 1895. CONDITION: the leather remains in decent shape except for a triangular (1x1cm) chip to the foot of the spine, short tears to the top of the spine, which is a little delicate, and a little rubbing to the corners. The boards are irregularly faded, but look presentable enough. The gilt titles remain bright. Binding is secure. Hinges have been reinforced with clear tape to the front, and Japanese paper towards the back. Pages are near fine and clean, lightly tanned. A 6 x 3cm section has been neatly cut from the top corner of the blank front free endpaper. Heavy book may require extra postage (@1.4kg). Book ref 645. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
