A near fine set.Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (28 February 1533 - 13 September 1592) was one of the most influential writers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. He became famous for his effortless ability to merge serious intellectual exercises with casual anecdotes and autobiography—and his massive volume Essais (translated literally as "Attempts" or "Trials") contains, to this day, some of the most widely influential essays ever written. Montaigne had a direct influence on writers all over the world, including René Descartes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, William Hazlitt, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Isaac Asimov, and possibly on the later works of William Shakespeare.

        Three Men and a Maid

A L Burt 1923 - New York .A fine copy with slight dulling to gilt on spine in a VG+ wrapper .I am still trying to complete a bibliography of the A l Burt editions but there are at least two editions of the early titles with the second being around 1930.At this point there are two editions of this title that I have found green and gilt, and red and gilt but there may well be more .At one stage I foolishly looked at collecting Edgar Rice burroughs .There are so many Grosset and Dunlap editions that there is a separate bibliography . The bibliographer has not attacked the A L Burt editions but I suspect its a similiar situation with Wodehouse. The tricky part is that there are no dates or printings and the only way to establish priority is to study all the editions ,and research the listed titles ,ie if there is a title listed that was'nt published until 1930 then it can't be 1923 .As far as I know at this point this edition is 1923,but at the end of the day the various printings may not be of importance to the collector only bibliographers who have nothing better to do with their lives. In my experience this is by far the rarest of the Wodehouse A l Burt editions and the only copy I have seen . [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Propyläen-Verlag, Berlin 1923 - A MASTERPIECE OF BOOK DESIGN, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FINE PRESS BOOKS, AND A HIGH POINT OF GERMAN AND FRENCH LITERARY AND ARTISTIC TRADITIONS Number 117 of 400. No copies in 30 years in the American auction records. 17 Original Lithographs, signed twice by Max Liebermann and numbered. Book: HEINE, Heinrich. DER RABBI VON BACHERACH. Propyläen-Verlag, Berlin, 1923. Folio. With 17 ORIGINAL Lithographs by Max Liebermann. 1/2 Black Morocco and boards. This copy SIGNED TWICE, as usual on limitation, and additionally (not in all copies) on frontispiece lithograph. Minor spotting and soiling to beige boards, otherwise a HANDSOME AND FINE COPY and internally clean. This book is a wonderful combination of two Jews, one who brought to France, German literary tendencies, and the other who brought to the Germans, French artistic tendencies. Heinrich Heine has been called 'the first modern intellectual' and became one of the greatest and most respected writers of the 19th century. Leibermann was the Great German artist that led the Berlin secession group and introduced French impressionism to Germany. This fine press book, a magnificent combination of typography, design and illustration, is often lauded as among the most beautiful of Jewish fine press books if not all fine press books. Liebermann demonstrates a refined sensitivity in his artwork that parallels the emotive text. The Rabbi of Bacherach includes a lovely and romantic description of a Passover- the earliest and most expressive of the essence of the festival, in modern Jewish literature. The story here recounts that (in trans. and referring to the Haggadah) " It was an old heirloom, with ancient wine stains. It had come down from the days of her grandfather. The book contained many boldly and brightly colored pictures. As a little girl, she had often looked at it so eagerly on Passover evenings." Folio - over 12" - 15" tall [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

William Heinemann, 195 1–75., London - First editions of each volume in the author's acclaimed "Dance to the Music of Time" series. Octavo, 12 volumes. The first volume is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The other volumes are near fine to fine in excellent dust jackets that only show light wear. A very attractive set. Anthony Powell's universally acclaimed epic encompasses a twelve-volume panorama of twentieth century London. Hailed by Time as "brilliant literary comedy as well as a brilliant sketch of the times," A Dance to the Music of Time opens just after World War I. Amid the fever of the 1920s and the first chill of the 1930s, Nick Jenkins and his friends confront sex, society, business, and art. In the second volume they move to London in a whirl of marriage and adulteries, fashions and frivolities, personal triumphs and failures. These books "provide an unsurpassed picture, at once gay and melancholy, of social and artistic life in Britain between the wars" (Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.). Listed on Modern Library's 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century. Time magazine included the novel in its100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. From 1923 through 1936 Tenggren worked for the game and book publisher Milton Bradley. In 1936 he was hired by The Walt Disney Company to work as an art director on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Tenggren gave Snow White an "Old World" look that Walt Disney sought, and despite being minor characters in the original by the Brothers Grimm the dwarfs took on new life in Disney's story, with Tenggren's presentation drawing depicting the major characteristics of each of the seven. His Rackham-style trees featured prominently in the forest scenes.Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, Baroness d'Aulnoy (1650/1651–4 January 1705), also known as Countess d'Aulnoy, was a French writer known for her fairy tales. When she termed her works contes de fées (fairy tales), she originated the term that is now generally used for the genre.
