Otherwise a very good set. First editions, first impressions. Working with astonishing speed and energy, Churchill produced this mammoth history of the First World War in the aftermath of electoral defeat. The work deals with his reorganization of the Royal Navy in the years leading up to the War, defends his Gallipoli policy, and criticises Haig's strategy. "Although parts of The World Crisis were highly autobiographical, drawing on documents from Churchill's private papers, the book as a whole was a stupendous narrative of the war in Europe featuring masterly set-piece accounts of major battles. Dictated to secretaries as he strode up and down the room, it exhibited his passionate interest in war and his romantic conception of the 'true glory' of the troops who perished on the Somme" (ODNB). In aim and method, it foreshadows his Second World War: together they form the single most important and authoritative grand narrative of the conflicts of the twentieth century. All volumes with the bookplate of the Bath Club Library to front pastedown.

        Waves and Quanta" in Nature, No. 2815, Vol. 112, October 13, 1923, p. 540

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the last of three papers in which Louis de Broglie brought together the concepts of the particle and the wave, drawing the analogy between light and matter with the hypothesis that every massive object should be associated with a quantum wave as well. By introducing the seminal new thought that particle-wave duality should apply not only to radiation, but also to matter, de Broglie not only heralded a new era in physics, he and Schrodinger, whose work came later, essentially created quantum mechanics. The three Nature papers were very important summaries of three papers de Broglie published in Comptes Rendus in 1923. Knowing the import of his discovery, de Broglie wrote summaries of each Comptes Rendus paper, this, as said, being the third. de Broglie was influenced by Einstein's work on the particle nature of light, writing that "After long reflection in solitude and meditation, I suddenly had the idea during the year 1923 that the discovery made by Einstein in 1905 should be generalized by extending it to all material particles and notably to electrons" (Preface to PhD thesis). The special theory of relativity founded by Einstein showed that matter itself was a form of energy. While explaining the photoelectric effect, Einstein proposed that electromagnetic radiation, a wave, can also behave as particle (photon). Building on Einstein, de Broglie proposed that just as waves can behave as particles, for instance electrons, can also behave as it were a wave motion (a de Broglie wave) with wavelength h/p, where p is the momentum of the electron and h is Planck's constant. He summed up his discovery in the following words: "Because the photon, which, as everyone knows, is a wave, is also a particle, why should not the electron (or any material particle) also be a wave?" In this paper, de Broglie writes that "The interplay between the propagation of the particle and of the waves could be expressed in more formal terms as an identity between the fundamental variational principles of Fermat (rays) and Maupertuis (particles) as de Broglie discussed it further in his last communication. Therein he also considered some thermodynamic consequences of his generalized wave-particle duality. He showed in particular how one could, using Lord Rayleigh's 1900 formula for the number of stationary modes for phase waves, obtain Planck's division of the mechanical phase space into quantum cells" (DSB). After the publication of the three papers in Nature, de Brogie achieved worldwide recognition for his discovery, and in 1929 he received the Nobel Prize for physics. In 1930, Schrodinger would extend de Broglie's work into a full-fledged wave mechanics, viewing electrons as continuous clouds and introducing 'wave mechanics' thus contributing to the creation of quantum mechanics. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm). Original paper wraps with slight repair at the spine. Ex-libris bearing only very light, all but invisible stamps on the front wrap (see image). Clean and bright inside and out. Near fine condition.

The International Competition For A New Administration Building For The Chicago Tribune MCMXXII Containing All The Designs Submitted In Response To The Chicago Tribune's Offer Commemorating Its Seventy Fifth Anniversary , June 10, 1922

Chicago: Chicago Tribune, 1923. Original heavy tan burlap binding with leather labels lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Maroon endpapers with a repetitive gilt design in a gilt border. A flawless copy with the excessively fragile and rare dust jacket which has some chipping.. Folio, 103 pp. of text plus 281 full page black and white plates printed one side only followed by a 1 page advertisment for the Chicago Tribune. From the dust jacket: " The two hundred and sixty designs in this volume constitute an encyclopedia of skyscraper architecture--the first book of its kind. In it are presented the genius, the experience, the ingenuity of the architects of twenty-two nations. The influence of The Tribune Tower Competition will be felt for many years. This volume--the first handbook of modern architectural achievement--is its compendium. Five Dollars Net". " The craving for beauty, thus set forth by The Tribune, is imbued with romance; with that high Romance which is the essence, the vital impulse, that inheres in all the great works of man in all places and all times, that vibrates in his loftiest thoughts, his heroic deeds, his otherwise inexplicable sacrifices, and which forms the halo of his great compassions, and of the tragedy within the depths of his sorrows. So deeply seated, so persistent, so perennial in the heart of humanity is this ineffable presence, that suppressed in us, we decay and die. For man is not born to trouble....he is born to hope and acheive". Louis H, Sullivan in the Architectural Record.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1923-25., 1923. All First Editions of The Library Edition. 7 volumes. A beautiful presentation in recent full dark blue morocco leather with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spines; top edges gilt. This is the First Collected Edition of the Romances, not noted by Blanck. 'Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. His first two books gained much attention, though they were not bestsellers, and his popularity declined precipitously only a few years later. By the time of his death he had been almost completely forgotten, but his longest novel, Moby-Dick — largely considered a failure during his lifetime, and most responsible for Melville's fall from favour with the reading public — was rediscovered in the 20th century as one of the chief literary masterpieces of both American and world literature.' Moby Dick, listed in 'The Novel 100' (Burt, 2004).

elementar. Die Blume Anna. Die Neue Anna Blume eine Gedichtsammlung aus den Jahren 1918-1922.

Berlin, Verlag Der Sturm, (1923). 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Light sunning to top of front wrapper. Upper part of spine with a small bump. Ex-libris (Alfred Liede) pasted on to verso of front wrapper. A fine and clean copy. 32 pp.. Rare first printing of one of the earliest edition of Schwitter's famous Dadaist 'sound-poems' (i.e. Dada Klang-Gedichten) often seen interpreted as a parody of a love poem. It famously became the symbol for the Dadaist movement, of the chaos and madness of the roaring 1920ies, and it was seen as the birth of a new poetic language. The poem made Schwitters famous overnight and it was parodied in newspapers and magazines, and strongly polarized public opinion throughout the 1920ies. Whilst Schwitters was never an official member of Berlin Dada, he was closely linked to many members of the group, in particular Raoul Hausmann and Hans Arp, and the poem is written in a dadaist style, using multiple perspectives, fragments of found text, and absurdist elements to depict the narrator's emotional state in the throes of love, or of Germany's political, military and economic collapse after the First World War."Schwitter's developed his own version of Dada, which he called MERZ. Reportedly derived from truncating the name of the German bank Commerzbank, it uses not just ready-mades but also objects that had been thrown away. Merz differed in one crucial aspect from Dada: It was art, not anti-art. Best known are Schwitter's non-sense poems that make sense - just not in the usual sense, in the same way that Schwitters did not restrict himself to the usual five physical senses. His poem [the present] identifies Anna Blume as "the beloved of my twenty-seven senses. The poem takes the reader through an accordingly distorted reality with statements, such as "Blue is the color of your yellow hair, and an equally playful disregard of linguistic rules, while following a grammar of the heart, such as in the poem's last sentence: "Anna Blume, you trickle beast, I love your!". ""Despite his overtures, however, the Dadaists rejected Schwitters, burning his "Blume" pamphlet at the 1920 Berlin Dada Fair. Too iconoclastic for more conventional artistic movements, Schwitters was too painterly and sentimental for Dadaism. Denied entry by the club he desperately wanted to join, he slapped stickers that said "Anna Blume" wherever he went; he interrupted other artists' talks by barking like a dog. And yet he was as energetic in his artistic activities proper as he was in his provocations, alternating between painting, printmaking, collage, stage design, poetry"."Given Schwitter's drive towards multivalence, all of these interpretations (An Anna Blume as satire, An Anna Blume as both a critique and subsumption of modernity, An Anna Blume as an expressionistic exposure of the sense surrounding modern experience, and An Anna Blume as a deliberately fashioned alchemical parable) are all possible". (Gamard, Kurt Schwitters Merzbau: The Cathedral of Erotic Misery, P. 57)

        THE TORRENS

1923. [1 of 20 signed copies] A Personal Tribute. [London:] Twenty Copies Privately printed by F. A. Hook, October 1923. Original beige wrappers. First Edition, being No. 13 of only 20 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad. The "Torrens" was the ship on which Conrad was the first mate during the years 1891-1893, during which time he was writing what would ultimately become ALMAYER'S FOLLY. Included is a photograph of the ship after a collision with an iceberg. This "personal tribute" appeared in the October 1923 issue of The Blue Peter, and would later be collected in the posthumous LAST ESSAYS.~This is a fine copy of the scarcest of all Conrad limited-issue items (the six booklets published by Shorter and the twenty published by Wise were all 25 copies, and were generally not signed by Conrad). Provenance: discreet bookplate of the amazing Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger, plus the case bears Estelle Doheny's small leather bookplate (which has offset onto the booklet's front cover). Keating 207. Housed in a cloth slipcase with inner chemise.
