The Ship That Sailed To Mars

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, No Date. First American edition. Hardcover. Good. Quarto. With 48 pages of text alternating with 48 color plates, all tipped onto sheets of gray paper. [1923]. This is one of the 250 copies published under the Stokes imprint (the remaining copies were published in the UK by George Harrap). Magnificent color illustrations in the spirit of Rackham, Dulac, Nielsen and others of the period. The author's only book. White parchment spine over paper-covered boards. This copy has quite heavy damage and loss to the elaborately printed spine with significant loss of parchment at the bottom two inches of spine as well as the spine crown area. Boards are worn about the edges. Internally clean and unmarked. Some of the gray paper backing has become brittle with small corner paper loss at times, but all text and all images in clean unmarked condition. This copy would make an excellent candidate for a marvelous leather rebind. Sold as-is.

Modern English Essays (5 Volumes in Fine Bindings)

J.M. Dent & Sons, Ltd.; E.P. Dutton & Co., London & Toronto: New York 1923 - Set of Five Volumes. Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London (binder) Publishers: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., London & Toronto; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York. One quarter crushed blue morocco, marbleized boards. Spines with raised bands, 4 morocco inlay rosettes, and gilt-lettered; top edges gilt. Matching custom marbelized board slipcase 7 x 4.5 x 4.25 inches. Stamped inside marbleized endpaper: BOUND BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE, LONDON, ENGLAND. To see more pictures, contact us. This is a collection of critical essays on literature in five volumes. Among the essayists are prominent literary figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Matthew Arnold, William Butler Yeats and Joseph Conrad. Ernest Rhys (1859-1946) was involved in a wide range of literary activities, as editor, poet, playwright, essayist and fiction writer. He was born in London but raised in the coal-mining town of Newcastle. Uninspired by working in his father¿s wine business, he entered the literary world. In 1906, Rhys became the first editor of Everyman¿s Library under the publisher Joseph Dent, a series of affordable editions of classics from world literature. Rhys fervently believed in the transformative power of knowledge and that education and political freedom went hand in hand, and it was his mission to make great literature accessible to a wide range of people. Sangorski & Sutcliffe was a London firm specializing in fine bindings, renowned for their creativity and craftsmanship. It was founded by Francis Sangorski (1875-1912) and George Sutcliffe (1878-1943) in 1901, five years after they met as students at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. There they studied under Douglas Cockerell, and then worked for him for three years before setting up their own business. Sangorski¿s brother Alberto joined the firm as an illuminator, and became a prominent practitioner of the craft. Sangorski & Sutcliffe became known for elaborate bindings embedded with precious and stones and jewels, but also produced a variety of other types. After Francis Sangorski¿s death, Sutcliffe ran the firm himself. He also trained his nephew, Stanley Bray (1907-1995) who inherited the company in 1943 and continued working there until 1985. In 1988, the company merged with the Zaehnsdorf bookbinding firm to form SSZ Ltd., which still operates in London. Condition: Contents generally very good with only minor overall toning and wear. Covers very good and sound, spines irregularly faded to varying tones of brown, few volumes with lightly rubbed joints. Slipcase with some abrasion, fading, abrasions, soiling, but sound.         [Photo Album]: The Female Figure

1923. Quarto. 40pp. Stringbound textured paper wrappers. Moderate wear to the extremities with some waviness to the pages and some photos lifting at the corners but all still firmly secured, very good. This portfolio was sold to subscribers by Allen from his Arthur Allen Studios during the late Teens or early Twenties and contains more than 40 pages of original nude photographic prints pasted onto stiff pages. Each sheet has between two to four different images; many showing four separate poses of the same model. The final three pages include 22 additional nudes tipped in after publication, some photos and some from postcards, possibly issued blank for the buyer to customize. The first page also includes a tipped in title page and a bound in brochure announcing this particular series (along with a pencil note, "Received 19 Ap 1923") and predicting: "We are entering a period of nudity." Allen (1886-1962) was a pioneer in nude photography who was unique in that his models displayed certain regions of the female form not documented by other photographers of the time. Allen claimed this was not for salacious reasons, but rather his earnest attempt to display the entirety of nude figure for artistic and "democratic" ideals. He explained in his biography, "To see womankind entirely nude would place all women on equality... And it would be only their true mental and physical charm that would lift them from the ordinary." Allen was arrested and indicted on several occasions during the 1920s for distributing obscene material but continued undaunted. He further pushed the boundaries with a portfolio of women from other races and a film of nude woman performing choreographed routines and military drills. Eventually he became a photographer for the Elysium Foundation, a nudist society, before fading into obscurity. An interesting and arresting (how could we resist) collection of images from the early part of the 20th Century by an unsung pioneer in nude photography. .

Bound in their original red-and-black-printed paper wrappers. Wrappers show occasional light soiling but are generally clean. Volume 2 has a closed tear at the crown. An attractive copy of the rare signed limited edition of Weber's classic work on Japanese and Chinese culture, religion and art.         Zur Affinen Feldtheorie. {Relativity]

Berlin: Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, XVIII, Berlin 1923 - Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Zur affinen Feldtheorie. Offprint from Sitzungsberichten der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 1923. XVIII. 8vo.,4, [137-140] First edition. Orange wrappers. A fine fresh copy in the rare off-print form marked with an asterisk by Weil, denoting a major paper ("Sonderabdruck") & deemed of sufficient interest that a translation was published in Nature Magazine. "Einstein's attempts to formulate a unified field theory [the theoretical framework to account for the fundamental forces of nature.] stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the general relativity theory, which did not adequately incorporate the electromagnetic field into the geometry of space-time". Einstein's first investigation of Weyl's ideas, published in the present paper which Weyl had begun working on in 1918. Weyl was investigating the possibility of constructing a unified field theory preserving the dimensionality of space-time while formally altering its geometry, making it a special case of the class known as affine geometries*. However Einstein later rejected Weyl's theory. "Weil No. 132*; Schilpp--Shields No. 171; Alicke No.113; Norman Library 698; Boni 141. *Affine Geometry is not concerned with the notions of circle, angle and distance. It's a known dictum that in Affine Geometry all triangles are the same. In this context, the word affine was first used by Euler (affinis). In modern parlance, Affine Geometry is a study of properties of geometric objects that remain invariant under affine transformations (mappings). Affine transformations preserve collinearity of points: if three points belong to the same straight line, their images under affine transformations also belong to the same line and, in addition, the middle point remains between the other two points." The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe.". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination)." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Covers elaborately stamped in gilt in a Grolieresque design, spines with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt decorated turn-ins, top edge gilt, marbled end-papers. A fine set.One of the great and most prominent American bookbinders, "Henry Stikeman’s career virtually paralleled the heyday of art bookbinding in America: beginning toward the end of the 19th century, into the beginning of the 20th. A Stikeman binding from the 1880s through, say, 1918/1919, represents the best work of the firm... During its prime, Stikeman & Co. was capable of turning out a stunningly large volume of high quality work. They did the large majority of the special publisher 'sets' of the period (for Scribners, Harcourt, Riverside Press, etc.), likely looking upon that type of work as their bread-and-butter... What’s apparent in this American (specifically, New York) work... is that the binders were a small group, sharing ideas, working together, and intent on creating an American Style. Stikeman and Macdonald both worked at Matthews, Stikeman eventually taking the firm over, MacDonald leaving before then and starting his own firm around 1880" (Jeff Stikeman).

        When Christmas Crossed the Peace

Thomas Allen, Toronto 1923 - Toronto: Thomas Allen, 1923. First Edition. 12mo, 149 pp. Flexible card stock boards; scarce original colored woodcut paper dustjacket wrapped around original card covers; still rarer original matching gift box. Some chipping to VG jacket, two repairable cuts separating a piece of the otherwise VG+ gift box . Interior is immaculate, almost certainly never read; Fine. Rare in any form, this work of fiction by early - and now quite famous - Canadian women's rights activist Nellie McClung - is the story of some Canadian women who outwit the raucous local men in a small Alberta town on Christmas Eve. McClung was such a leader in Canadian Women's Suffrage that on October 18, 1999, she and four others from the movement were permanently honored in the form of five larger-than-life bronze statues (by Canadian artist Barbara Paterson) which were unveiled at Olympic Plaza in Calgary. A second set was unveiled on October 18, 2000, on Parliament Hill - an honor previously reserved for Fathers of Confederation, Canadian monarchs, and deceased prime ministers. Veyr difficult to find at all, nearly impossible to locate in its full woodcut pictorial jacketing and the matching gift box. L28 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Sea-Hawk (Sea Hawk)

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1923. Reprint edition, but the first edition by this publisher. Barely noticeable abrasions to two preliminary pages else about fine in a bright dustwrapper which has undergone professional restoration, primarily at the folds and extremities, and appears fine. Along with Captain Blood and Scaramouche, one of a trio of swashbuckling novels that helped to define the genre. This was the basis for one of the great silent adventure films, directed in 1924 by Frank Lloyd and featuring Milton Sills as the Sea Hawk, with Enid Bennett, Lloyd Hughes, Wallace MacDonald, Marc McDermott, and Wallace Beery. Also well-known is the 1940 Michael Curtiz swashbuckler with Errol Flynn, which kept the Sabatini title but used an original story-line loosely based on the exploits of Sir Francis Drake and modified to draw obvious parallels to England on the verge of WWII. An early copy of a desirable title almost never seen in jacket. .

        The Vegetable

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1923. First. First edition. Spine lettering dull, a very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. For reasons unknown to us, this copy is Inscribed by Harold H. Knerr, probably the foremost illustrator of the Katzenjammer Kids: "With kindest wishes & best wishes from yours sincerely, Harold H. Knerr." Beneath his inscription, Knerr has drawn his two greatest creations, the mischievous Katzenjammer Kids, Hans and Fritz. Originally created by Rudolph Dirks in 1897, and based on the "Max und Moritz" cartoon pranksters and bad boys created by German artist Wilhelm Busch. Knerr took over the cartoon in 1914, after a lawsuit between the Hearst and Pulitzer papers, and continued until his death in 1949, and created the version of the Katzenjammers best known today. A pleasing little inscription drawing connecting the "bad boy" comic icons to the infant terrible of the 1920s literary world. Fitzgerald's only play. .

A Tile Bet Frank Rishme Ofebakh

Druglin (1923), Leipzig - 12mo. 23pp. (1), plus 7 b/w prints. Original quarter vellum over green cloth. Youthful essay by the future third president of the State of Israel Zalman Shazar (Rubashov) on the infamous eighteenth century messianic claimant Jacob Frank. Frank led a large number of Jews in the Podolia region of Ukraine to convert to Catholicism in 1759. Soon afterwards he was imprisoned in the monastery of Czestochowa by the Polish government on charges of heresy. He was freed in 1772 after the region came under Russian control due to the first partition of Poland. He then left Eastern Europe for Brno in Moravia and eventually to Offenbach in Germany. Due to his magnetic personality and claims of supernatural power and royal birth, he succeeded in building an extravagant court that attracted the patronage of both the Austrian and Russian monarchies. Frank proved to be of interest to later Zionism due to how he ran his court as a military camp, creating out of his followers the first modern Jewish army. Includes numerous well known drawings related to the Frankist movement such as the portraits of Jacob Frank and his daughter Eve as well as Jacob Frank's deathbed. Text in Hebrew. Endpapers sunned. Overall in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
