The World Crisis, full set of U.S. first editions inscribed and dated by Churchill

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1923 - This is a full, U.S. first edition set of Churchill's history of the First World War, inscribed and dated in the fifth volume, The Aftermath. Five volumes are first edition, first printing, while the inscribed volume is the first edition, third printing, published in September 1929, six months after the first. The inscription, inked in black in three lines on the first free endpaper, reads: "Inscribed by | Winston S. Churchill | Feb. 1932". In February of 1932, Churchill was traveling in the United States on a lucrative and successful lecture tour. He spoke in many cities throughout the month before departing for England on 11 March aboard the ocean liner Majestic. This volume was undoubtedly inscribed during the tour. Publisher Charles Scribner wrote to Churchill on the day of his departure "I sincerely hope that you made no mistake in trusting your books to us. We will continue to back them until they come into their own." Churchill's books most certainly did come into their own. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Collectors will note that for The World Crisis, the U.S. is the true first edition, as initial U.S. publication preceded the British. The inscribed volume is in very good condition. The binding is square and clean with bright gilt. We note minor wear at the spine ends and lower corners. The spine is slightly sunned, more noticeably at the center below the author's name, but nonetheless retains respectable color and bright gilt. The contents are clean and with no spotting and no inscriptions save the one by the author. The binding is slightly shaken, with a cosmetic gutter split at the title page, but the mull beneath remains firmly attached and the binding fully intact. The five first edition, first printing books comprising the rest of this set are in very good to near-fine condition with minor flaws and wear. The contents are uniformly clean, tight, and unusually bright for paper that is prone to age-yellowing. There is no spotting. There are no previous ownership marks save for a bookplate on the pastedown of The Unknown War. The boards are all clean and bright with only minor scuffing or blemishes. Spine presentation shows only mild sunning. Even the notoriously fade-prone Volume I spine retains good color, although the gilt has darkened as is normal for this volume. Of note, the folding map at p.388 of The Unknown War is properly folded with no tears; there is just some wear to the leading edge where it protrudes slightly from the text block.         The Waste Land

Boni and Liveright, New York 1923 - First edition, second impression, one of 1000 numbered copies of Eliot's signal work, an echo chamber of ancient and modern voices overheard in London between the wars: "I will show you something different from either / Your shadow at morning striding behind you / Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you; / I will show you fear in a handful of dust." As Eliot's bibliographer Donald Gallup notes, this stated "Second Edition" is more accurately a second impression, printed from the same setting of type as the first. This copy agrees with later copies of the first impression print run on all points, and bears the pencilled ownership signature of the great American photographer Walker Evans, with the note "New York/March, 1926" in his hand. Evans originally intended to be a writer, dropping out of Williams College to study in Paris, where he gazed, starstruck, at James Joyce across the aisles of Shakespeare and Company. T.S. Eliot was another of the living writers Evans most admired. In the first photographs Evans ever published, appearing in Creative Arts in 1930, he captioned the final image "Hurry up please, it's time," the insistent last call of Eliot's bartender in Part II of The Waste Land. (Trachtenberg, 241). Gallup A6b. An excellent copy, a direct link between two of the most important American modernists. Octavo, original black cloth with gilt lettering. A few tiny marks to spine, lightest wear to corners and edges. No dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed ("Joseph Conrad"), to "My dear Veronica" [Wedgwood]

1923. [a long amusing letter to a child] Two full pages (both sides of a sheet of "Oswalds, Bishopsbourne, Kent" stationery, including additional writing in one margin). Dated "31. Mch. [19]23." Joseph Conrad did not write very many letters to children. He also did not write many letters that could be termed "amusing" or "jocular" -- especially toward the end of his life. Yet here it is: a lengthy, amusing letter to a child, written just 16 months before he died. The text of the letter reads:~What a traveller you are -- and, incidentally what a nice person, to write to me such an interesting letter! Yes, Ajaccio is all right and Corsica is lovely and I have admired it -- for three months on end; which is a sufficient tribute, I think. I, too, have been oppressed, buried under, smothered and choked by the mimosas thrown into the carriage by a driver -- by many drivers. They WILL do it. They are all mad -- you know. One of them, once, left his horses and trap (where my wife and I were sitting) within about three inches from the edge of a dreadful precipice in order to climb a mimosa tree. He sat there for (I think) one hour, like a sort of devastating bird, showering broken branches on the ground below. My prayers nor my threats could induce him to come back to his horses. I offered him at last all the money I had in my pocket, my watch and chain, any sum that I (a stranger) could borrow in Corsica (which is a poor country). He remained deaf. He did not think the offer good enough I suppose. The mimosa shook and cracked non-pathetically. The horses dozed. The precipice yawned (they always do), and I admired the Corsican scenery but wished myself back in England -- on Romney Marsh for preference. Yes, Corsica is a lovely island, but dangerous -- because of its drivers who are a public terror; and thus worse than the vendettas which are private affairs. Did Cook's people show you a vendetta? I haven't seen one but I saw a bandit. He was quite tame. He took a cigarette from my hand most delicately.~Directly I heard you were taking your mother to Constantinople I began to think what I should do if the Turks captured you as they always have done in the 18th century tales. I would have had to go (of course with your father's permission) to rescue you from the hands of the Infidels. So I formed a plan. An excellent plan -- but I cannot tell you of it now. It is not because I am lazy but because I am going to America in three weeks time and the plan would take several months to describe properly. Give my love to your Mother and your Father; and please, my dear, keep a little corner in your heart for your old and frivolous friend. Joseph Conrad.~Cicely Veronica Wedgwood (1910-1997) was the then-12-year-old daughter of Conrad's dear friends Iris and Ralph Wedgwood, to whom Conrad had dedicated WITHIN THE TIDES (also, Ralph would soon serve as co-executor of Conrad's estate). Clearly, during the Wedgwood family's "Cook's Tour" of Corsica, young Veronica had written Conrad a letter, knowing from her parents that Conrad and his wife had also spent some time there. (Veronica would subsequently go on to become one of the great historians of her generation; four decades later she would both be made a Dame and be awarded the Order of Merit.)~The letter is in fine condition, other than the creases from initial mailing.

VYSOKE TATRY [Hand-Illuminated Travel Album of Souvenir Post Cards and Original Photographs of the Tatry Mountain Region of Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary]

np [Czechoslovakia?], (ca. 1923). Hardcover. Fine. Oblong folio; 12" x 16.5" approx. String-tied quarter-leather commercial album with 40 full-color, hand-illuminated (most likely gouache) pages on 20 thick paper leaves, each interleaved with spider-web design tissue. Featuring 123 mounted original postcards and photographs (most approx. 3.5" x 5.5"), each numbered and keyed to a calligraphic index of captions on verso of collaged and painted title page. Touches of wear to pages and tissue, a few bumps to boards. Else generally fine; housed in custom archival linen clamshell box. Though ostensibly a travel album documenting an extensive tour through the Vysoke Tatry mountain range, much more a singularly striking work of folk art featuring extensive hand-painted illuminated backgrounds and borders. The artist, here unnamed but presumably identified by the monogrammed and dated painting that ends this album, has filled each page and framed each image with elaborately marbled and intricately detailed elements. These expert illuminations, which seem influenced to some extent by Art Nouveau, exhibit a brilliant palette and a decidedly modern sense of de- sign. A whirlwind of effects - from geological patterns that evoke the mountainous terrain of the journey, to pointillist enameling reminiscent of matryoshkas, and abstract geometrics that call to mind the burgeoning avant garde - all carefully arranged to accentuate colors, subjects, and other details in the mounted photos and postcards. Quite simply one of the most impressive and beautiful vernacular books we've handled. Virtuosic.

        Grimms Marchenschatz

1923. first edition. The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm Illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren[TENGGREN, Gustaf, illustrator]. GRIMM, Jacob and Wilhelm. Grimms Märchenschatz. Ausgewählte Kinder- und Hausmärchen bon Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm. Berlin: Hermann Klemm, [1923]. First edition. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 249 x 191 mm.). [iv], 179, [1, blank] pp. Thirty-two fine tipped-in color plates. Publishers quarter black calf over batik boards, front cover and spine pictorially stamped in gilt. Four plates with very slight corner creases, inner hinges a little shaken, corners of binding a little rubbed. Overall an excellent copy of this scarce Tenggren title.Gustaf Adolf Tenggren (1896-1970) was a Swedish-American illustrator known for his Arthur Rackham-influenced style and use of silhouetted figures with caricatured faces. From 1923 through 1936 Tenggren worked for the game and book publisher Milton Bradley. In 1936 he was hired by The Walt Disney Company to work as an art director on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Tenggren gave Snow White an "Old World" look that Walt Disney sought, and despite being minor characters in the original by the Brothers Grimm the dwarfs took on new life in Disney's story, with Tenggren's presentation drawing depicting the major characteristics of each of the seven. His Rackham-style trees featured prominently in the forest scenes.

Otherwise a very good set. First editions, first impressions. Working with astonishing speed and energy, Churchill produced this mammoth history of the First World War in the aftermath of electoral defeat. The work deals with his reorganization of the Royal Navy in the years leading up to the War, defends his Gallipoli policy, and criticises Haig's strategy. "Although parts of The World Crisis were highly autobiographical, drawing on documents from Churchill's private papers, the book as a whole was a stupendous narrative of the war in Europe featuring masterly set-piece accounts of major battles. Dictated to secretaries as he strode up and down the room, it exhibited his passionate interest in war and his romantic conception of the 'true glory' of the troops who perished on the Somme" (ODNB). In aim and method, it foreshadows his Second World War: together they form the single most important and authoritative grand narrative of the conflicts of the twentieth century. All volumes with the bookplate of the Bath Club Library to front pastedown.

        Waves and Quanta" in Nature, No. 2815, Vol. 112, October 13, 1923, p. 540

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the last of three papers in which Louis de Broglie brought together the concepts of the particle and the wave, drawing the analogy between light and matter with the hypothesis that every massive object should be associated with a quantum wave as well. By introducing the seminal new thought that particle-wave duality should apply not only to radiation, but also to matter, de Broglie not only heralded a new era in physics, he and Schrodinger, whose work came later, essentially created quantum mechanics. The three Nature papers were very important summaries of three papers de Broglie published in Comptes Rendus in 1923. Knowing the import of his discovery, de Broglie wrote summaries of each Comptes Rendus paper, this, as said, being the third. de Broglie was influenced by Einstein's work on the particle nature of light, writing that "After long reflection in solitude and meditation, I suddenly had the idea during the year 1923 that the discovery made by Einstein in 1905 should be generalized by extending it to all material particles and notably to electrons" (Preface to PhD thesis). The special theory of relativity founded by Einstein showed that matter itself was a form of energy. While explaining the photoelectric effect, Einstein proposed that electromagnetic radiation, a wave, can also behave as particle (photon). Building on Einstein, de Broglie proposed that just as waves can behave as particles, for instance electrons, can also behave as it were a wave motion (a de Broglie wave) with wavelength h/p, where p is the momentum of the electron and h is Planck's constant. He summed up his discovery in the following words: "Because the photon, which, as everyone knows, is a wave, is also a particle, why should not the electron (or any material particle) also be a wave?" In this paper, de Broglie writes that "The interplay between the propagation of the particle and of the waves could be expressed in more formal terms as an identity between the fundamental variational principles of Fermat (rays) and Maupertuis (particles) as de Broglie discussed it further in his last communication. Therein he also considered some thermodynamic consequences of his generalized wave-particle duality. He showed in particular how one could, using Lord Rayleigh's 1900 formula for the number of stationary modes for phase waves, obtain Planck's division of the mechanical phase space into quantum cells" (DSB). After the publication of the three papers in Nature, de Brogie achieved worldwide recognition for his discovery, and in 1929 he received the Nobel Prize for physics. In 1930, Schrodinger would extend de Broglie's work into a full-fledged wave mechanics, viewing electrons as continuous clouds and introducing 'wave mechanics' thus contributing to the creation of quantum mechanics. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm). Original paper wraps with slight repair at the spine. Ex-libris bearing only very light, all but invisible stamps on the front wrap (see image). Clean and bright inside and out. Near fine condition.
