Tenggren gave Snow White an "Old World" look that Walt Disney sought, and despite being minor characters in the original by the Brothers Grimm the dwarfs took on new life in Disney's story, with Tenggren's presentation drawing depicting the major characteristics of each of the seven. His Rackham-style trees featured prominently in the forest scenes.Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, Baroness d'Aulnoy (1650/1651–4 January 1705), also known as Countess d'Aulnoy, was a French writer known for her fairy tales.         Ich und Du

Im Insel-Verlag zu Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany/ Deutschland 1923 - 138 pp. A rare, hard-to-find gem! Solidly bound copy with minimal external wear, crisp pages and clean text. Small scruff on spine. Very mild foxing on page edges. A near fine example. No dj. Text in German. First edition of Buber's seminal work, the groundbreaking philosophical essay, which is considered the cause of a Copernican revolution in theology, due to its reaction against a mainly scientific approach to religion. Buber's religious philosophy of dialogue as presented in "Ich und Du" has been a great influence, not only on the fields of philosophy and religion, the study of which he set out to change, or at least give a new approach to, but also on modern therapy. The theories presented in the work are remarkably in accordance with recent views on different forms of human development, which often refer to Buber's theory on the relationship between the self and being. At the time this work was published, Buber's philosophy constituted a radical departure from the psychoanalytic approach to the individual as it was then comprehended.By contrasting the "I-You" ("Ich-Du") -relation (the dialogue) with the "I-It" ("Ich-Es") - relation (the monologue), Buber presents a double "I" of man, and with the "I-You"-relationship he establishes the possibility of man to enter into a true and sincere relationship with others, -and - in spite of the eternal abyss between the two - the "I-You"-relation ultimately establishes the relationship (i.e. the talk or meeting, "Gespräch") between man and God; according to Buber this is the essence of Biblical religion. The meeting with the other person and with the world (which is also governed by an "I-You"-relation) is in fact essentially a reflection of man's meeting with God.The work was later edited by Buber, but he never wished to change it substantially, and the text has remained more or less the same as that of the first edition. "Ich und Du" has been translated into numerous languages, and also in the English-speaking world the book has been very influential, in spite of the difficulties with translating "Du" into English. The work is primarily known as "I and Thou", though the later translation "I and You" might be more appropriate. The Austrian-Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber (1878-1965), is mainly known to the Western world as the author of the work "Ich und Du". Inspired by the reading of Kant, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche Buber began studying philosophy in Vienna in 1896. In 1898 he joined the Zionist movement, regarding it as destined to social and spiritual enrichment. In 1930 he became honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt, but he resigned as soon as Hitler came to power in 1933. In 1935 he founded the "Central Office for Jewish Adult Education", which played an important role in German learning in the 1930'ies, since the German government had forbidden Jews to attend public education. In 1938, however, Buber had to leave Germany, and he settled in Jerusalem, where he became professor at the Hebrew University. After the Second World War he received several prominent prizes. A very collectible copy of this Buber masterwork one of the most important books of the last century. Martin Buber, [1878-1965], Austrian-born Jewish Philosopher, Story Teller, Theologian - best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. Ich und Du, is today considered a landmark of twentieth-century intellectual history. Buber was strongly moved by the writings of Frederich Nietzsche and Ich und Du united the seminal existentialists themes of modern German thought with the traditional Judeo-Christian thinking. In Ich und Du, Buber presents the view of a world in which human beings can enter into relationships using their innermost complete self to form true partnerships beyond the notion and incorrect view that the universe is merely the object of our senses and experiences.         "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" [in The Dial -- Volume LXXV, Number 1, July 1923]

Greenwich, Connecticut: The Dial Publishing Company. 1923. First. Magazine. Small quarto. 104pp. Perfectbound wrappers. Typical wear to the yapped edges with a small chip at the heel of the spine, ex-library stamps on the front wrap, and dampstaining along the foredge, very good. This issue includes "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" by Virginia Woolf, the first in a series of short stories featuring her most well-known literary creation. The character had previously appeared in Woolf's first book, The Voyage Out, but was revisited some years later by the author in the stories and novel. "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" was intended to be the first chapter of the 1925 novel, Mrs. Dalloway, originally planned as a series of distinctly separate stories. Woolf chose instead to publish the story on its own and retain elements for the novel, which was ultimately a more unified narrative than her initial plan allowed. .

Gli Adornatori del Libro in Italia (Volumes 1 to 3)

Impreso coil Tipi della Scuola D'Arte Tipografica del Comune del Bologna 1923-1926, Bologna - Survey of then modern book and bookplate illustration in Italy. This is a continuous, but not complete, run of 9 volume series that ran into the early 1930s, but each issue does standalone and generally speaking can only be found individually. Offered here as a set of three. Folio sized, 14 by 10 inches, or 36 by 26 cm. Vol I has 112 plates, with 328 designs, and was one of a limited edition of 850 copies. Vol II, issued two years later, has 220 plates with 420 designs and was a limited edition of 500. Volume III, issued in 1925 to 1926, with 240 plates (plates 114 to 117 not present but no evidence they ever were present). Limited edition of 850. Plates are not only lovely in and of themselves and a carefully curated cross-section of Italian book art of the day, but also a fine overview of Italian aesthetics then, reacting to the over-ripeness of the nineteenth century with a more pared down, even brutal style at times, that is modernism, whether art deco or even more abstract. Not that there weren't still manifest the more literal historicisms -- one should not think there was a monolithic approach to all this. Bookplate of Augustus Carolus Becker who is probably the same person who ran a private press in Brooklyn. Red cloth binding in original wrappers. Cloth has some stains, soilage and shelfwear but remain presentable. All text blocks are tight and leaves are generally clean. Other than possible missing 4 plates in vol 3, interior-wise a fine set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Waste Land

Boni and Liveright, New York 1923 - First edition, second impression, one of 1000 numbered copies of Eliot's signal work, an echo chamber of ancient and modern voices overheard in London between the wars: "I will show you something different from either / Your shadow at morning striding behind you / Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you; / I will show you fear in a handful of dust." As Eliot's bibliographer Donald Gallup notes, this stated "Second Edition" is more accurately a second impression, printed from the same setting of type as the first. This copy agrees with later copies of the first impression print run on all points, and bears the pencilled ownership signature of the great American photographer Walker Evans, with the note "New York/March, 1926" in his hand. Evans originally intended to be a writer, dropping out of Williams College to study in Paris, where he gazed, starstruck, at James Joyce across the aisles of Shakespeare and Company. T.S. Eliot was another of the living writers Evans most admired. In the first photographs Evans ever published, appearing in Creative Arts in 1930, he captioned the final image "Hurry up please, it's time," the insistent last call of Eliot's bartender in Part II of The Waste Land. (Trachtenberg, 241). Gallup A6b. An excellent copy, a direct link between two of the most important American modernists. Octavo, original black cloth with gilt lettering. A few tiny marks to spine, lightest wear to corners and edges. No dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
