        Waves and Quanta" in Nature, No. 2815, Vol. 112, October 13, 1923, p. 540

BOUND FIRST EDITION of the important first Nature printing of Louis de Broglie's seminal work bringing together the concepts of the particle and the wave and drawing the analogy between light and matter with the hypothesis that every massive object should be associated with a quantum wave as well. By introducing the seminal new thought that particle-wave duality should apply not only to radiation, but also to matter, de Broglie not only heralded a new era in physics, he and Schrodinger, whose work came later, essentially created quantum mechanics. & & The Nature paper is a very important summary of three papers de Broglie published in Comptes Rendus in 1923. Knowing the import of his discovery, de Broglie wrote a summary in English for publication in Nature. & & de Broglie was influenced by Einstein's work on the particle nature of light, writing that "After long reflection in solitude and meditation, I suddenly had the idea during the year 1923 that the discovery made by Einstein in 1905 should be generalized by extending it to all material particles and notably to electrons" (Preface to PhD thesis). The special theory of relativity founded by Einstein showed that matter itself was a form of energy. While explaining the photoelectric effect, Einstein proposed that electromagnetic radiation, a wave, can also behave as particle (photon). & & Building on Einstein, de Broglie proposed that just as waves can behave as particles, for instance electrons, can also behave as it were a wave motion (a de Broglie wave) with wavelength h/p, where p is the momentum of the electron and h is Planck's constant. He summed up his discovery in the following words: "Because the photon, which, as everyone knows, is a wave, is also a particle, why should not the electron (or any material particle) also be a wave?" & & In this paper, de Broglie writes that "The interplay between the propagation of the particle and of the waves could be expressed in more formal terms as an identity between the fundamental variational principles of Fermat (rays) and Maupertuis (particles) as de Broglie discussed it further in his last communication. Therein he also considered some thermodynamic consequences of his generalized wave-particle duality. He showed in particular how one could, using Lord Rayleigh's 1900 formula for the number of stationary modes for phase waves, obtain Planck's division of the mechanical phase space into quantum cells" (DSB). & & After the publication of this work in Nature, de Brogie achieved worldwide recognition for his discovery, and in 1929 he received the Nobel Prize for physics. In 1930, Schrodinger would extend de Broglie's work into a full-fledged wave mechanics, viewing electrons as continuous clouds and introducing 'wave mechanics' thus contributing to the creation of quantum mechanics. CONDITION & DETAILS: New York: Macmillan and Co. 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm).         WANDERER OF THE WASTELAND

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1923. First edition, second printing. Laid in is a card SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. With three black and white plates by W. Herbert Dunton. 8vo, publisher’s red cloth with dramatic black pictorial decoration on upper cover, spine lettered in black. In the original colourful pictorial dustjacket. 419 pp. A well preserved copy with a bit of mellowing to the cloth. The jacket presents well though with a bit of wear along the edges. Internally quite fresh and clean. One of Zane Grey’s more popular western novels. This copy has with it a card signed by the author. Printed on the card is, “Your trail and mine cross in mutual love of the great west.” and is signed beneath in blue pen. An excellent sentiment as Grey was a highly outspoken and influential conservationist. His main motivation behind the writing of his western novels was to spark interest in America’s great wilderness areas and National Parks, and thus he hoped to encourage others to preserve them.

        E.R.III/1, mes souvenirs *

Sans nom, sans lieu (1923). - Broché, oblong 21 x 31, couverture muette avec bords effilochés. Quelques rousseurs. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Poem for Dylan. Three-page unpublished poem, siged ""Tuli."""

[Almost certainly New York City: n.d.. ca. late 1960s.]. "36- line poem in ink, on 2 sheets of wove paper approx. 10¼"" x 7¼"", beginning: ""And they came unto the prophet / Saying prophesy..."" In fact, the poem is critical of Dylan for being aloof and politically silent during the tumultuous 1960s. Previous folds, else fine, and in the original mailing envelope with the return address of Birth Press. & & Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010) was an American counterculture poet, author, publisher, and cartoonist who, with Ed Sanders, co-founded the band The Fugs in 1964. He appears as a character in Alan Ginsberg's poem, ""Howl,"" and was the founder and editor of the magazine ""Birth"" in 1958. He is also the author of numerous books on a variety of subjects, mostly with an anti-war, pacifist, and anarchist bent.& & Provenance: from the papers of Israel ""Izzy"" Young, former owner of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, New York where he ""arranged concerts with folk musicians and songwriters, who often made contacts with other musicians at the Folklore Center. Bob Dylan relates in his memoirs, Chronicles, how he spent time at the Center, where Young allowed him to sit in the backroom of the store, listening to folk music records and reading books. Dylan met Dave Van Ronk in the store, and Young produced Dylan's first concert at Carnegie Chapter Hall in 1961. Dylan wrote a song about the store and Young, 'Talking Folklore Center'"" (Wikipedia)."

The Bibendum Sketchbook. [Illustrations by Cousyn, Grand Aigle, Hautot, C. King, O'Galop, Ortiz and others]. BIBENDUM'S TWENTY-FIFTH YEAR

Michelin Paris? 1923 - Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, text in English, title and text in blue and black, with very numerous delightful cartoons throughout, neat signature on title; original illustrated wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, yapped edges, covers mildly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy of a rare booklet. One of the world's oldest trademarks, 'Bibendum' (the 'Michelin Man') was created in 1898 by cartoonist Marius Rossillon ['O'Galop'] at the instigation of Andre Michelin. The figure's first mass appearance was on the company's famous poster of 1898 since when it has continued to represent the Michelin company in over 150 companies. This very scarce booklet was produced to mark the figure's twenty-fifth anniversary. Since text and captions are entirely in English (but printed in France) we assume that this is the English version of a French promotional publication. A RARE SURVIVAL.
