"Poem for Dylan. Three-page unpublished poem, siged ""Tuli."""

[Almost certainly New York City: n.d.. ca. late 1960s.]. "36- line poem in ink, on 2 sheets of wove paper approx. 10¼"" x 7¼"", beginning: ""And they came unto the prophet / Saying prophesy..."" In fact, the poem is critical of Dylan for being aloof and politically silent during the tumultuous 1960s. Previous folds, else fine, and in the original mailing envelope with the return address of Birth Press. & & Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010) was an American counterculture poet, author, publisher, and cartoonist who, with Ed Sanders, co-founded the band The Fugs in 1964. He appears as a character in Alan Ginsberg's poem, ""Howl,"" and was the founder and editor of the magazine ""Birth"" in 1958. He is also the author of numerous books on a variety of subjects, mostly with an anti-war, pacifist, and anarchist bent.& & Provenance: from the papers of Israel ""Izzy"" Young, former owner of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, New York where he ""arranged concerts with folk musicians and songwriters, who often made contacts with other musicians at the Folklore Center. Bob Dylan relates in his memoirs, Chronicles, how he spent time at the Center, where Young allowed him to sit in the backroom of the store, listening to folk music records and reading books. Dylan met Dave Van Ronk in the store, and Young produced Dylan's first concert at Carnegie Chapter Hall in 1961. Dylan wrote a song about the store and Young, 'Talking Folklore Center'"" (Wikipedia)."

The Bibendum Sketchbook. [Illustrations by Cousyn, Grand Aigle, Hautot, C. King, O'Galop, Ortiz and others]. BIBENDUM'S TWENTY-FIFTH YEAR

Michelin Paris? 1923 - Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, text in English, title and text in blue and black, with very numerous delightful cartoons throughout, neat signature on title; original illustrated wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, yapped edges, covers mildly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy of a rare booklet. One of the world's oldest trademarks, 'Bibendum' (the 'Michelin Man') was created in 1898 by cartoonist Marius Rossillon ['O'Galop'] at the instigation of Andre Michelin. The figure's first mass appearance was on the company's famous poster of 1898 since when it has continued to represent the Michelin company in over 150 companies. This very scarce booklet was produced to mark the figure's twenty-fifth anniversary. Since text and captions are entirely in English (but printed in France) we assume that this is the English version of a French promotional publication. A RARE SURVIVAL.         "Sonnwendzeit". Rosenstilleben.

. Aquarell, auf dünnem Velin, auf chamoisfarbenem festem Velin aufgezogen, rechts unten monogrammiert "L.H.J.". 5,8:4,6 cm. Fotokopierte Bezeichnung im Passepartout eingeheftet: "1923. / 21.6. / "Sonwendzeit."

FRENCH ENGRAVINGS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY IN THE COLLECTION OF JOSEPH WIDENER, LYNNEWOOD HALL

London: Privately printed at the Chiswick Press, 1923. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 120 COPIES n. Hardcover. A Vast, Beautifully Bound Work with More than 150 Large-Folio Plates. 403 x 283 mm (15 7/8 x 11 1/8").Four volumes. Compiled by Edward Clayton. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 120 COPIES. IMPRESSIVE RED CRUSHED MOROCCO BY RIVIERE & SON (signed on front turn-ins), triple ruled boards, raised bands, spines gilt in seven compartments, three with lettering, four with ornately gilt foliate cornerpieces and a blooming pineapple shrub centerpiece surrounded by star and circle tools, densely gilt inner dentelles, blue silk pastedowns and free endleaves, top edges gilt, in numbered cloth slipcases (one of the slipcases inexpertly taped along the bottom). WITH 153 VERY FINE ENGRAVED PLATES, 62 OF WHICH ARE COLORED. Captioned tissue guards. A BEAUTIFUL SET, with only the most trivial of imperfections. This rare set has great appeal both for the charm and quality of its illustrations and for Edward Clayton's interesting and informed commentary, and the whole beautifully produced and very substantial work is pleasing as a physical object on the shelf. The works are arranged alphabetically by artist, and many of the great names of the French Rococo, such as Boucher and Fragonard, are well represented. As is typical of the era, scenes of daily life among the highest echelons of society predominate (the figures sometimes dressed, for playful sport, in silken shepherd costume), and flirtation is a frequent theme. The final volume has a large section illustrating costume and an index enabling the reader to search by engraver. Late 19th century French lawyer and politician Albert Christophle was the original owner of this collection, which was purchased by American Joseph Early Widener to enhance the Widener family art collection, one of the most notable in the Western hemisphere. The nucleus of the family collection (of which the etchings form only a small part) was gathered by Peter Widener (1834-1915), who began as a modest Philadelphia butcher and became wealthy supplying the Union army with mutton during the Civil War. One of his sons died of typhoid, and another perished on the Titanic, so the entire family fortune went to the remaining son Joseph Widener (1871-1943), in his day one of America's wealthiest men. Joseph devoted himself to horse racing and art collecting, and his impressive gallery at Lynnewood Hall was visited by Spanish and Swedish royalty. In 1941 Widener donated the collection to the American public; the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. was built to house this magnificent artistic treasure. Riviere is considered one of the foremost names in English binding partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere started out as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829, then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881, he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership, at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son, and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. In the early part of the 20th century, an intense rivalry between Riviere and Sangorski & Sutcliffe developed, and collectors have reaped immense dividends ever since in the form of more and more elaborate work that was not infrequently of breathtaking beauty.

Cartoon panel commemorating the first Opening Day of Yankee Stadium (April 18, 1923)

[New York, 1923] - The cartoonist and illustrator Thornton Fisher drew several newspaper comics and panels in the 1910s, including 'Kitty Keys', 'Raising the Family', 'Betty's Brother Bobby' and 'The Marrying of Mary'. He also frequently treated baseball and sporting subjects, and this comic commemoration of the very first opening day at Yankee Stadium, is inscribed by Fisher to yet another legendary name associated with the Yankees: Harry M. Stevens, the famous concessionaire who introduced the hot dog at a baseball game at the Polo Grounds in 1907. When Yankee Stadium opened in 1923, Stevens was already a familiar figure to the players; in fact, Babe Ruth - a passionate lover of hot dogs - considered Stevens a second father. The centerpiece of the composite drawing shows the large figure of Babe Ruth, smiling and cocking his bat, with the caption beneath, "Babe opened the Yank Stadium by Poking a Home Run in the 4th, Scoring Dugan and Ward." Nowadays, of course, Yankee Stadium is known as "The House That Ruth Built." Fisher's inscription reads: "To my good friend Harry M Stevens from his sincerely and merrily / Thornton Fisher / April 26th / 1923" A priceless association, and a superb memento of the birth of a baseball legend 11-5/8 x 17 inches. Pen and ink on artist's board, each image captioned; inscribed (ses below), signed ("Thornton Fisher"), and dated ("April 26, 1923") by the artist. Matted and framed; fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). 4 pages, dated 5 September 1923, to "My dear Mrs. [Muriel G.] Eddy", signed "very sincerely yours, H. P. Lovecraft." Written on two sheets of 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper with Hotel Statler Detroit letterhead, from 598 Angell Street, Providence, R.I

Unpublished. Letter has faint mailing creases, but is in fine. condition. (#109137). Clifford and Muriel Eddy were the only other devotees of the weird tale, both as readers and writers, whom Lovecraft knew in Providence. Accounts differ on the question of when the friendship began, but the most reliable evidence would put it near the time of this letter, in the fall of 1923. As one of the earliest letters in their correspondence, this was written under circumstances that make it particularly interesting for the student of Lovecraft and weird tales today. He knew of their strong interest in this subject, so he felt free to delve into it. He didn't know them very well, so he felt obliged to introduce himself, but in an economical manner, since any letter much longer than this would seem to presume on their interest. And the newness of the relationship, the absence of familiarity, meant he could not retreat into that bantering, cynical tone so often found in letters to old friends. The result, in the two middle pages of this letter, is as good an explanation of his literary style as one could find. Even to those who have read dozens of such apologiae pro suis litteris in his letters, this one may bring out a new glint or two on the subject. The focus here is on his authorial voice, that curious blend of professorial calm and preternatural alarm, lulling regular rhythms and jarringly esoteric diction, cozy antiquarianism and cosmic alienation, that has come to be known as "Lovecraftian." It is not an authentic Georgian style, or course -- if Sam Johnson or Alexander Pope could read one of HPL's stories, it would suggest the sly mania of a bedlamite -- but a Georgian style as refracted through the amber of modern nostalgia. "It was the old style which I venerated in youth, & with which I became so saturated that it grew to be my instinctive utterance." If he tried to write with the clipped precision of moderns such as Sherwood Anderson and Ben Hecht, "- I should be floundering about as clumsily & artificially as if I were using a half-foreign dialect." Because Lovecraft is so connected in people's minds with the pulp magazines that sprang up after World War I, that watershed between the Victorian and modern ears, it is hard to remember sometimes that Lovecraft spent his formative years (24 of them) in a Victorian world. He disavowed any sympathy for the Victorian, but the question of which bygone aesthetic he yearned for is secondary to the fact that it was a lost world, as lost as his childhood and youth. "And the ironic part of it is, that I have a very keen intellectual appreciation of what the moderns are doing, so that (as in the Conservative I sent you) I am often forced to defend them against the reactionaries whom I myself resemble in my actual use of language. Truly, a grotesque cleavage between theory & practice!"
