Atomic structure and spectral lines. Translated from the third German edition by Henry L. Brose

London: Methuen. 1923. "First edition in English, 8vo, pp. xiii, [1], 626; a fine copy in the original printed dust jacket (with considerable text on it touting the importance of the book) with several minor breaks at folds. Sommerfeld was one of the most advanced theoretical physicists of his day. The ""extraordinary extension, enrichment, and precision of Bohr's [quantum] theory by Sommerfeld contributed decisively to its rapid and wide-spread acceptance. Only five years after Bohr's first publication Sommerfeld, recognizing that the mathematical development of this quantum-theoretical atomic model had reached a conclusion of sorts, undertook a comprehensive exposition of the field. His Atombau und Spektrallinien, of which the first edition appeared in late 1919, immediately became the bible of atomic physics, and its successive editions, appearing almost annually in the early 1920's, chronicled the progress of this field up to the eve of the introduction of quantum mechanics"" (DSB). This copy with the early ownership signature of Raymond D. Douglas, MIT class of 1924 and later a professor of mathematics there."

Ondes et quanta. Note de M. Louis de Broglie, présentée par M. Jean Perrin. (Séance du 10 Septembre 1923).[Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1923]. First edition.

The exceptionally rare offprint, of de Broglie's "enunciation of the epochal new principle that particle-wave duality should apply not only to radiation but also to matter ... He made the leap in his September 10, 1923, paper: <i>E = h?</i> should hold not only for photons but also for electrons, to which he assigns a 'fictitious associated wave'." (Pais, <i>Subtle is the Lord</i>, p. 436). "Louis de Broglie achieved a worldwide reputation for his discovery of the wave theory of matter, for which he received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1929. His work was extended into a full-fledged wave mechanics by Erwin Schrödinger and thus contributed to the creation of quantum mechanics" (DSB). In his first paper on wave mechanics (January 1926), Schrödinger acknowledged his debt to de Broglie, writing: "I have recently shown that the Einstein gas theory can be founded on the consideration of standing waves which obey the dispersion law of de Broglie ... The above considerations about the atom could have been presented as a generalization of these considerations" (quoted in Pais, <i>loc cit</i>., p. 439). No copies of this offprint are listed on OCLC, COPAC or BNF. KVK locates one copy only (in Germany), but we have not been able to establish with certainty whether that copy is indeed an offprint or merely an extract. No copies have appeared at auction, and we are not aware of any other copy having appeared in commerce. This copy is in very fine condition, a remarkable survival of a document consisting of a single sheet as issued in its original state.<br/><br/> In his 1905 paper 'Über einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt' ('On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light'), "Einstein postulated that light is composed of individual quanta (later called photons) that, in addition to wavelike behavior, demonstrate certain properties unique to particles. In a single stroke he thus revolutionized the theory of light and provided an explanation for, among other phenomena, the emission of electrons from some solids when struck by light, called the photoelectric effect" (<i>Britannica</i>). "The central idea of de Broglie's work, contained in [the present paper], was that the formula <i>E = h?</i> by which Einstein had related the frequency <i>?</i> of light to the energy <i>E</i> of light quanta should not only apply to light but also to material particles. For a particle at rest with mass <i>m</i> he concluded, since its energy is <i>E = mc2, that it performs an internal oscillation with frequency <i>? = mc2/h</i>. He considered the motion of a particle, carefully taking into account the effects of the special theory of relativity, and was able to construct a wave which was always <i>in phase</i> with the internal oscillation of the particle ... At the end of [the present paper] he gave an application of his theory by showing that he could naturally explain the discrete electron orbits in Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom. Each stable orbit should be closed in the sense that the same phase should be assumed by the matter wave after completion of an orbit" (Brandt, <i>The Harvest of a Century</i>, Chapter 32, p. 133). <br/><br/> De Broglie published two further notes on matter waves in the same volume of <i>Comptes Rendus</i>, which gave applications of his theory of matter waves. In 'Quanta de lumière, diffraction et interférences' (24 September), he predicted on the basis of his theory that 'a stream of electrons traversing a very small aperture will show the phenomenon of diffraction.' This was experimentally observed by C. J. Davisson and L. H. Germer in 1927, work for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937. "Thus the duality of both light and matter had been established, and physicists had to come to terms with fundamental particles which defied simple theories and demanded two sets of 'complementary' descriptions, each applicable under certain circumstances, but incompatible with one another" (PMM 417). In 'Les quanta, la théorie cinétique des gaz et le principe de Fermat' (8 October), he derived a result of Planck on the kinetic theory of gases, by making the assumption that 'the state of a gas will be stable only if the waves corresponding to all the atoms form a system of stationary waves.' He also showed that "the interplay between the propagation of a particle and of its associated matter wave could be expressed in more formal terms as an identity between the fundamental variational principles of Pierre de Fermat (rays), and Pierre Louis Maupertuis (particles)" (DSB). <br/><br/> When de Broglie published these notes he was practically unknown in scientific circles, although his elder brother Maurice had already done important experimental work on X-rays and his illustrious family was famous in France. His ideas became widely known only with the publication of his doctoral thesis <i>Recherches sur la théorie des quanta</i> in the summer of 1924, which is an elaboration of the content of the three notes. On receiving a copy of the thesis from Paul Langevin, de Broglie's doctoral advisor, Einstein said that it "lifted a corner of the great veil" (Isaacson, <i>Einstein: His Life and Universe</i>, p. 327). Einstein's support for de Broglie's ideas brought them to the attention of the principal actors in the development of quantum theory, notably Schrödinger, whose wave mechanics was an extension and completion of de Broglie's work. De Broglie's book <i>Ondes et mouvements</i> (1926), selected by Carter and Muir for the <i>Printing and the Mind of Man</i> exhibition and catalogue (1967), was a further expansion of ideas first published in the notes and thesis.. Offprint from Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Académie des Sciences, Tome 177. 4to, pp. [507]-510. Single sheet as issued, folded once, very fine

Hint of slight tanning at edges, minuscule nick (no loss) in upper wrapper at spine, otherwise about fine. Half morocco folding case and fleece-lined chemise.         Over the Balkans and South Russia

London: Edward Arnold & Co.,, 1923. Being the History of No. 47 Squadron Royal Air Force. Octavo. Original red cloth, black lettered spine. 3 folding maps, 12 plates from photographs. Small typed book label on verso of title. Spine lightly sunned, a very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title: "To Major Owen Rutter, with the kind wishes of the author (once of the 7th Wilts) HAJ". Owen Rutter (1889-1944) historian, novelist and travel writer, served in the 7th battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment in France and on the Salonika Front; with his bookplate on the front pastedown. "Number 47 Squadron was formed at Beverley, Yorkshire on 1 March 1916 as a Home Defence squadron equipped with BE2s, BE12s and FK3s. Some six months later, however, the unit was transferred for duty in Salonika with Allied Forces fighting the Bulgarians in Northern Greece. During 1917, the Squadron started to concentrate on bombing and reconnaissance and remained in Greece after the Armistice. In April 1919, the Squadron was dispatched to Southern Russia to help General Denikin's White Russian forces defeat the Bolshevik armies. The Squadron was disbanded in October 1919, when it was absorbed into the Russian Army" (RAF website). Jones worked for the Air Historical Section and completed the official history The War in the Air; his career is summed-up in Giblin and Franks's The Military Cross to Flying Personnel of Great Britain and the Empire 1914-1919 (2008): "Henry Albert Jones was born on 6 August 1893. He was gazette Second Lt in the 8 (Reserve) Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment on 9 Oct 1915. He was seconded to the RFC in the first weeks of 1917, and gazette Flying Officer (Observer) on 30 April 1917. He joined 47 Sqn at Salonika. On 20 Aug 1917 his pilot Lt F W H Thomas and he, in AWFK8 A1466, were attacked by German fighters while returning from a bombing attack on Prilep. Thomas was badly wounded, but managed to recover enough to land the plane safely; he would return to England and die of his wounds several months later. Jones was also wounded, but managed to drive one single-seater down out of control. Both Thomas and Jones would receive the MC"

        The World Crisis 1911-1914

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. Second printing. [vi], 536 pp. Volume I only. Annotated in pencil throughout by Count Metternich, with a manuscript note listing page numbers where annotations and underlining occur. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth. Light shelf wear to covers. In custom blue half morocco slipcase and chemise. Bookplate. Second printing. [vi], 536 pp. Volume I only. Annotated in pencil throughout by Count Metternich, with a manuscript note listing page numbers where annotations and underlining occur. 8vo. Inscribed by Churchill to Count Metternich, the German Ambassador to England, With His Annotations Throughout. Inscribed on the first blank, "To Count Metternich, from Winston S. Churchill, June 1. 1923." Paul Wolff Metternich (1853-1934) was the German ambassador to England during the lead-up to the First World War, serving from 1901-1912. Metternich read this volume closely and annotated it at length throughout in English, making more than 75 notes in pencil in the margins, some of the notes quite lengthy and filling the entire margin of a page. Metternich engages in a running conversation with Churchill's work, offering his opinions and first-hand recollections of the events described. As to be expected, Metternich often differs quite sharply with Churchill's assessment of the events leading to the outbreak of war, taking the position that Germany was forced into armed conflict against her will - "She wished to be friends with her neighbors, but the neighbors would not be friends with her ..." (note on p. 23). Metternich's notes clearly blame France for the buildup to war, while downplaying the role of Austrian and Russian meddling in the Balkans: "We thought France had not acquired an inherent right to make of Morocco a French colony because Great Britain had given her support for it ... It was not wicked but perhaps unwise to support Austria in her Balkan affairs ... But after all, did Germany attack England? I thought it was vice versa" (p. 24). Metternich does, however, concede in other notes that the buildup of the German navy was disastrous for Anglo-German relations and a significant cause of war, "Our oversea commerce was to a great extent built up on the back of the British Empire and would in all probability have continued to prosper up to the present day without our naval policy which brought about the war with England, the defeat through America ..." (p. 16). Metternich disagrees with Churchill's assertion that England tried to ease Franco-German relations in the years before the war. He always saw England as firmly on the side of France and unwilling to give Germany a fair deal. Metternich's name appears in Churchill's text in connection to the German reaction to the Mansion House speech of Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, which clearly stated England's intention to stand firm in the face of German aggression. Metternich denies that he implied to Sir Edward Grey that Germany was on the verge of military action, provoked by Lloyd George's words: "I do not know what could have made him think so. Certainly not my words on that or any other occasion. Our conversation was perfectly polite and not acrimonious although I had to complain of Mr. Lloyd George's speech" (p. 48). Churchill claims that the German government was blindsided by England's resolve to stand with France, suggesting that Metternich, as ambassador to England, misread the political situation, something he denies: "I have told the German Govt repeatedly since 1904 that in case of war England would be on the side of France, either at once or later on, as the case might be. Two Foreign Secretaries, Sir Lawnsdowne and Sir Edward Grey, had told me so in guarded but unmistakeable words" (note p. 49). Churchill describes a meeting with Metternich on pages 53-5 ("One night the German ambassador, still Count Metternich, whom I had known for ten years, asked me to dine with him ...") Metternich has extensively annotated these pages, including one note correcting Churchill's remark that they drank wine from the Emperor's cellar ("no from my brother's"), and one lengthy note on the question of whether the English navy would initiate a surprise attack on Germany. Other interesting notes include a humorous and lengthy account of a supposed German spy ring of armed waiters run by Metternich in London: "One gallant Colonel, an MP, had even found out that I was at the head of the German waiters, drilling them and hiding arms and ammunition in the cellars of the Embassy, to be distributed to my army of waiters in case of need" (pp. 52-3). Here Metternich describes a meeting with an ailing Bismarck, "[Bismarck] said to me in the year of his death (1898): 'England's muscular system is overgrown by too much fat. She will not anymore raise to a great effort.' I did not deem it becoming to contradict him although I was of different opinion. I had spent some happy time in my young days in the hunting field in England ... and knew something of British energy not withstanding the fat ..." (notes pp. 15-16). Metternich's opinion on the inevitability of war, "Russia had in a secret agreement, if I remember right, in 1885, had conceded Bosnia Herzegovina to Austria ... Had Russia gone to war on account of Serbian grievances in 1909 Germany would have helped Austria, France would have helped Russia and England would have come in, just as in 1914. Sir Edward Grey must have known that. It was a diplomatic contest of strength. In 1905 France gave way, in 1906 Germany gave way, in 1909 Russia gave way, in 1911 Germany gave way, in 1914 none gave way in time and war followed" (pp. 35-6). With many more notes, a complete list of which are available on request. A fascinating and important piece of World War I history, heretofore unknown to scholars.
