The World Crisis, a remarkable set of British first editions with five dated inscriptions from Churchill to his Aunt and significant annotations by her son, Churchill's Cousin, concerning the Battle of Jutland

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition. Hardcover. This is an extraordinary inscribed and annotated British first edition set of Churchill's history of the First World War. Each of the five books (the 1916-1918 book was issued in two volumes) is inscribed and dated by Churchill to his Aunt Clara. Clarita "Clara" Jerome Frewen (1851-1935) was the eldest sister of Churchill's mother and wife of Moreton Frewen, the famously slipshod editor of Churchill's first book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force. Three inscriptions are dated pre-publication and all five are warmly personal, with Churchill using only his first name. The inscriptions alone would make the set a prize, but it is the second family association that makes the set a unique piece of history. The books passed to Clara's son and Churchill's first cousin, Captain Oswald Moreton Frewen (1887-1958). Oswald was a career naval officer who served under Churchill's leadership as First Lord of the Admiralty during both the First and Second World Wars. Oswald participated in every naval engagement in the North Sea during the First World War, after the war helped the Admiralty prepare the official history of the Battle of Jutland, and during the Second World War served as King's Harbour Master of Scapa Flow. THE ANNOTATIONS: Of note, according to the Frewen family, Oswald's own 1916 diary "is considered to be part of the United Kingdom's national archives because of his description of the Battle of Jutland," with a claim upon the volume made by the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth, England. Oswald's extensive annotations in this set appear throughout the two 1916-1918 volumes and run to thousands of words. These annotations are remarkably informed and informative, sharply critical, and compellingly interesting - to both collectors and scholars. Some of Oswald's criticism may be attributed to his partisan admiration of Admiral Jellicoe, some perhaps to jealousy toward a famous cousin. Nonetheless, Oswald's comments are not without some expressed admiration for his Cousin Winston's gifts - both literary and as a leader. And tempering the sharp criticism is the knowledge that Oswald actively sought - and received - his cousin Winston's inscriptions in books that Oswald read and annotated until Oswald's death in 1958. We have transcribed the entirety of Captain Frewen's annotations, producing a 22-page document which we will provide upon request. CONDITION: This set is in sound, unrestored condition, with the original bindings firm and intact - well short of fine but of course to be prized far more for provenance and content than for condition. Five volumes are first edition, first printing. Volume I, the 1911-1914 volume, is first edition, second printing (printed only three days after publication of the first printing). The blue cloth bindings are square and tight, but show some of the scuffing endemic to the smooth navy cloth and some wear to extremities. We note the following: slight outward warping to the 1915 volume boards; some minor fraying at the head of the 1915 volume spine; minor blistering of The Aftermath cloth (to which this particular volume was prone) on the upper front cover and lower right of the spine; minor discoloration spots to The Eastern Front front cover and a wrinkle (binding error rather than blistering) in the upper rear cover cloth. Spotting is substantially confined to the page edges and first and final leaves, the heaviest instance within the set observed on the inscribed page of the 1915 volume. We note no previous ownership marks beyond the author's inscriptions and Captain Frewen's annotations. The set is housed in a navy cloth slipcase with gilt print and decoration. PROVENANCE: This set has remained in the Frewen family until now, providing both sterling provenance and a unique opportunity for collectors. Some of his stories have been adapted by Ping Chong into his puppet theatre, including the 1999 Kwaidan and the 2002 OBON: Tales of Moonlight and Rain.         The Mysteries of the People or History of a Proletarian Family Across the Ages

New York City - New York Labor News Company, 1923 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The New York Labor New's Company's striking edition of Eugene Sue's 'great masterpiece' The Mysteries of the People. Reviewed by John Hossack in the New York Times, the edition is far from a catchpenny affair. Catchpenny means inferior, showy, gotten up to attract and fool buyers. I can assure you this stricture does not apply to [The Mysteries of the People]. As your reviewer showed, the purpose of the translator and publishers is to help along the labor movement by furnishing a lesson from the past to enlighten the movement of to-day. (NYT 1904)Each volume contains a number of novels:Book One: The Gold Sickle, The Brass Bell, The Iron Collar, The Silver Cross, The Casque's Lark, The Poniard's HiltBook Two: The Branding Needle, The Abbatial Crosier, Carlovingian Coins, The Iron Arrow-Head, The Infants' Skull, The Pilgrim's Shell, The Iron Pincers, The Iron Trevet, The Executioner's KnifeBook Three: The Pocket Bible, The Blacksmith's Hammer, The Sword of Honor, The Galley-Slave's Ring.         Original Hand Written Statement of Mary Florence Lassandro Taken by Inspector J.D. Nicholson Signed and Dated Edmonto April 24th / 23.

Edmonton - 1923. () Very good. 2pp. Two folio pages (21.5 X 35.5 CM) somewhat roughly removed from a binder. Evidence of old staining and soiling from moisture. 68 lines of text or roughly 500 words in total. Also included with the manuscript are a number of contemporary news clippings on the subject. Also included is a three page folio copy / transcript of Nicholson's report. Also included is a copy of Horan's Bio. Of Nicholson. The story of the Emperor Pic murder is well told in the Horan Biography of Nicholson as Chapter XXIX. J.D. Nicholson was Assistant Superintendent of the Alberta Provincial Police and was headquartered in Edmonton. He was very concerned with the illegal bootlegging of whiskey from B.C. Through S.W. Alberta into Montana. The ring leader was Emilio Picariello who was centered in the Crowsnest Pass and worked with various people including his son Steve. An incident occured and Emperor Pic and a house maid, Florence Lassandro, Pic's sons girlfriend, murdered constable Steve Lawson. This event lead to both Pic and Lassandro being convicted of First Degree murder and sentenced to hang. Before the sentence was carried out Lassandro sent for Nicholson to make a statement. (related on p. 259 of the bio.) the document here is that statement in the orginal. (See transcript) the recorded facts seem to differ somewhat from published versions and this rare primary source document gives Lassandro's final statement on the facts. On May 22, 1923 Lassandro was hung being the only Alberta woman and the final. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        [College Yearbook]: The 1923 Columbian

New York: Senior Class of Columbia College. (1923). First. First and only edition. Bookplate, light edgewear to the boards and the front hinge weakening, but a sound, very good copy. 1923 Columbia Yearbook. Gehrig initially could not play intercollegiate baseball for Columbia because he had played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year, unaware that doing so jeopardized his eligibility to play any collegiate sport. Gehrig was ruled eligible to play on the Lions' football team and was a standout fullback and tackle. He later gained baseball eligibility and joined the Lions on that squad as well. But in this yearbook he is featured in photographs and accounts of his days on the football team over the 1922 season. Gehrig is pictured at least twice and is lauded for his "consistent line-plunging," although his efforts could not prevent the season from being "an unmitigated failure, with few, if any, redeeming qualities." Other notables pictured include the authors Corey Ford and Henry Morton Robinson, and Walter Koppisch, Gehrig's teammate, who was later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. .

These are typically called "salesman's dummy" copies, but these Doubleday Page books weren't being sold door-to-door, so this is more likely an advance mock-up copy the publisher had provided Conrad in order to demonstrate how the finished book would appear in its binding.~The volume is in near-fine condition (slightly rubbed at the corners).~The front endpaper is inscribed in 1924 by Conrad's wife (widow? -- Conrad died during 1924), "To Campbell and Hilda Tilbury Fox, | With love and affectionate | regards from | Jessie Conrad Korzeniowska | 1924." Dr. Campbell Tilbury Fox attended to both Joseph and Jessie Conrad from 1918 on, and continued to serve as Jessie's doctor after her husband's death. Most likely, it was not long after Joseph's death that Jessie gave this advance copy of her husband's most-recent novel to their doctor; it is interesting that although Jessie George had grown up an Englishwoman, here she honors her husband by using the feminine version of his original Polish last name, Korzeniowski.

[Michelin, Paris?, 1923], 1923Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, text in English, title and text in blue and black, with very numerous delightful cartoons throughout, neat signature on title; original illustrated wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, yapped edges, covers mildly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy of a rare booklet. One of the world's oldest trademarks, 'Bibendum' (the 'Michelin Man') was created in 1898 by cartoonist Marius Rossillon ['O'Galop'] at the instigation of Andre Michelin. The figure's first mass appearance was on the company's famous poster of 1898 since when it has continued to represent the Michelin company in over 150 companies. This very scarce booklet was produced to mark the figure's twenty-fifth anniversary. Since text and captions are entirely in English (but printed in France) we assume that this is the English version of a French promotional publication.A RARE SURVIVAL.

DER UNTERGANG DES ABENDLANDES UMRISSE EINER MORPHOLOGIE DER WELTGESCHICHTE

Münich: C.H. Beck'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung / Oskar Beck 1923, 1922 & 1923.. Three volumes. First two uniform cloth backed printed boards, third printed wrappers. Light hand soiling to bindings, with patch of surface rubbing to upper board of second volume, uniform tanning to text stock, otherwise very good. Uniform later printings, with the separately printed index volume. Signed by Spengler on the half-title of the first volume, and thus uncommon. "The outlook for western civilization, to Spengler, is gloomy. The end is at hand. Democracy, the typical product of western civilization, will be wiped out by caesaren autocracy. The tremendous success of the book among the semi-literate, especially in Germany and America, during the period after the First World War, is a politico- sociological phenomenon that has nothing to do with the intrinsic merits or demerits of this 'new outlook on history and the philosophy of destiny', as the author himself described the aim of his book ... It was the major prophet, Toynbee, who took up the mantle that fell from the minor prophet, Spengler - Printing and the Mind of Man. The first volume (first published under another imprint in 1918, is here denoted the "dreiunddreissigste bis siebenundvierzigste völlig umgestaltete auflage," and the second "einundreissigste bis siebzigstes auflage einundfünfzigstes bis siebzigstes tausend."         Original Rivoli Theatre Opening Night Program for the First Talking Picture [April 15, 1923]

New York: The Rivoli, 1923. 1st Edition. Other Other. Very Good. (Ephemera) Original program for the week of April 15, 1923 at the Rivoli Theatre on Broadway at 49th Street in New York City. This amazing piece of cinematic history is the opening night program for the first commercial screening of motion pictures with sound-on-film! Program also features various music and dance acts as well as the silent film “Bella Donna” starring Pola Negri. Includes advertisement for the silent film “Hollywood” from Paramount Picture. Measures 7.75 x 5.25 inches [7.75 x 15.75 unfolded]. Some toning and fold marks. Edge wear with some small tears. Marking/writing on back of program. Slightly delicate, but Very Good condition overall. In 1919, American inventor Lee de Forest filed the first patent on his sound-on-film process, and over the next four years he worked to improve his system. The De Forest Phonofilm process recorded sound directly onto film so that synchronization between picture and sound could be depended on if it was achieved during recording. In November 1922, de Forest established his De Forest Phonofilm Company in New York City, but none of the Hollywood movie studios expressed any interest in his invention. After a few demonstrations to the press and various engineering societies, de Forest premiered 18 short films made in Phonofilm at the Rivoli Theater in New York City on April 15, 1923. He was forced to show his films in independent theaters such as the Rivoli, since Hollywood movie studios controlled all major theater chains. The short films made by de Forest [primarily as demonstrations to try to interest the major studios in Phonofilm] are considered particularly valuable to entertainment historians, as they include recordings of a wide variety of both well-known and less famous American vaudeville and British music hall acts which would otherwise have been forgotten.
