        Traumatic shock. Presentation copy

New York: Appleton, 1923. Cannon, Walter B. (1871-1945). Traumatic shock. xvii, 201pp. Text illustrations. New York & London: D. Appleton, 1923. 263 x 173 mm. Original gilt-stamped cloth, one corner bumped. Light toning but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Cannon to Sir Cuthbert Wallace (1867-1944) on slip tipped to front pastedown: ?"To Sir Cuthbert Wallace with gratitude for your kindness and encouragement during our work in old Béthune. Walter B. Cannon.?" First Edition. Cannon, professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School, was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century, making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion, the autonomic nervous system, homeostasis, and stress response. ?"In the fall of 1916, before the United States entered World War I, the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917, he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher, first secretary of the Medical Research Committee, to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at Béthune. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon, the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock?" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at Béthune, Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace, consulting surgeon to the First Army, British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that ?"We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace, later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace, who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts?"         The Complete Works of Joseph Conrad Complete in 24 Volumes, Personal Edition

Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923. What is remarkable about this Conrad set published between 1923 and 1924 is not only that all 24 volumes are present but that they include their original 24 dust jackets. The books are bound in a deep, satiny blue cloth with gilt spine titles and top-edge gilt. There is also a blind-stamped cameo vignette of a ship on each spine, as well as blind-stamped borders in addition to a gilt line beneath each title. The books are all tightly and securely bound and show only minimal spine and edge rubbing, having been protected by the jackets. Some have light fading of the cloth at the top edge. Only three volumes contain the original owner's name, hometown and date (1924) written in ink on the front free endpaper. Several other volumes contain his name, etc. in a light pencil, easily erased. The text pages are clean and bright, with no stains, marks, or foxing that I noted. The books mainly range from Very Good to Near Fine condition. As for the dust jackets, I've placed them all into archival Brodart protective sleeves. The dust jackets are a tan paper with a circlular vignette cameo of a ship on the front panel, a small vignette drawing of the author on the spine, and the titles and volume numbers in black. Most of the dust jackets are in Very Good+ condition. They all have some spine browning or darkening. A number have small chips and tears, particularly in the spine area. While most of the dust jackets are in Very Good+ condition, at least, about two of the dust jackets are in only Good+ condition, with some seam separations and taped repairs on the reverse, particularly in Volume 4. The Volume 2 jacket, as can be seen, has larger spine chips than the others. I believe that these uniform volumes were originally sold separately, rather than as a set. The volume numbers on the dust jackets are not to be found in the books themselves. I've included photos of the books with their dust jackets and without, so that the buyer can decide how he might with to display them. The titles, in volume number order, are as follows: 1. The Arrow of Gold, 2. Victory, 3. Almayer's Folly, 4. Lord Jim, 5. Youth, 6. An Outcast of the Islands, 7. Typhoon, 8. The Rescue, 9. Chance, 10. The Shadow-Line, 11. The Inheritors, 12. The Mirror of the Sea, 13. The Nigger of the Narcissus, 14. Nostromo, 15. Notes on Life and Letters, 16. A Personal Record, 17. Romance, 18. The Secret Agent, 19. A Set of Six, 20. Tales of Unrest, 21. Twixt Land and Sea, 22. Under Western Eyes, 23. Within the Tides, 24. The Rover. Each book measures 5 1/4 by 7 5/8 inches. The shipping weight comes to 31 pounds and a shipping adjustment email will be sent to the buyer following order. NOTE: I am also offering Conrad's two final works, Suspicion and Last Essays published posthumously a year or two after this set, in separate listings. . Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Der Fasciculus Medicinae des Johannes de Ketham.

. Monumenta Medica, 1. Hrsg. v. Henry E. Sigerist. - Mailand, E.Lier & Co., 1923. Gr.-Folio, (36 pp. mit 6 Holzschnitten), pp.37-57, (3) pp., 4 Abb., mont. 13 Tafeln, orig. Man darf wohl sagen monumental. His name was probably corrupted by the printers to Ketham. The great importance of this book is that it includes the first anatomic (book) illustration of any kind."         The Ship that Sailed to Mars

George G Harrap, 1923. In grey boards with vellum spine which richly decorated with gilt. There is some wear to extremities of the corners, but generally the book is clean and the gilt is bright. It is contained in a custom0made solander box. First edition, English issue of this maginficently illustrated work by Timlin. .George G Harrap published this huge and magnificent volume in November 1923, finely bound in half vellum richly decorated in gilt. The book contains superb color plates by the artist, alternated throughout with 48 leaves adorned with his fine calligraphic and poetic text. These pieces of art were all mounted by hand on gray matte paper, reminiscent of Harrap's best pre-war editions de luxe. Timlin's fantasy is a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland. His watercolors equal the best work of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson (Dalby, 102). The book's strength [rests] on its exotic descriptions and beautiful illustrations (Clute & Grant, 949-50). A must for the serious bibliophile

        Waves and Quanta" in Nature, No. 2815, Vol. 112, October 13, 1923, p. 540

BOUND FIRST EDITION of the important first Nature printing of Louis de Broglie's seminal work bringing together the concepts of the particle and the wave and drawing the analogy between light and matter with the hypothesis that every massive object should be associated with a quantum wave as well. By introducing the seminal new thought that particle-wave duality should apply not only to radiation, but also to matter, de Broglie not only heralded a new era in physics, he and Schrodinger, whose work came later, essentially created quantum mechanics. & & The Nature paper is a very important summary of three papers de Broglie published in Comptes Rendus in 1923. Knowing the import of his discovery, de Broglie wrote a summary in English for publication in Nature. & & de Broglie was influenced by Einstein's work on the particle nature of light, writing that "After long reflection in solitude and meditation, I suddenly had the idea during the year 1923 that the discovery made by Einstein in 1905 should be generalized by extending it to all material particles and notably to electrons" (Preface to PhD thesis). The special theory of relativity founded by Einstein showed that matter itself was a form of energy. While explaining the photoelectric effect, Einstein proposed that electromagnetic radiation, a wave, can also behave as particle (photon). & & Building on Einstein, de Broglie proposed that just as waves can behave as particles, for instance electrons, can also behave as it were a wave motion (a de Broglie wave) with wavelength h/p, where p is the momentum of the electron and h is Planck's constant. He summed up his discovery in the following words: "Because the photon, which, as everyone knows, is a wave, is also a particle, why should not the electron (or any material particle) also be a wave?" & & In this paper, de Broglie writes that "The interplay between the propagation of the particle and of the waves could be expressed in more formal terms as an identity between the fundamental variational principles of Fermat (rays) and Maupertuis (particles) as de Broglie discussed it further in his last communication. Therein he also considered some thermodynamic consequences of his generalized wave-particle duality. He showed in particular how one could, using Lord Rayleigh's 1900 formula for the number of stationary modes for phase waves, obtain Planck's division of the mechanical phase space into quantum cells" (DSB). & & After the publication of this work in Nature, de Brogie achieved worldwide recognition for his discovery, and in 1929 he received the Nobel Prize for physics. In 1930, Schrodinger would extend de Broglie's work into a full-fledged wave mechanics, viewing electrons as continuous clouds and introducing 'wave mechanics' thus contributing to the creation of quantum mechanics. CONDITION & DETAILS: New York: Macmillan and Co. 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm). Ex-libris with small gilt Newberry Library at the foot of the spine and slight ghosting from the removal of a label (see scan).
