        Pouchers Perfumes, Cosmetics and Soaps

Springer. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 782 pages. Dimensions: 9.1in. x 6.3in. x 2.0in.Pouchers Perfumes Cosmetics and Soaps has been in print since 1923 and is the classic reference work in the field of cosmetics. Now in a fully updated 10th edition, this new volume provides a firm basic knowledge in the science of cosmetics (including toiletries) as well as incorporating the latest trends in scientific applications and legislation which have occurred since the 9th edition. This edition will not only be an excellent reference book for students entering the industry but also for those in specialized research companies, universities and other associated institutions who will be able to gain an overall picture of the modern cosmetic science and industry. The book has been logically ordered into four distinct parts. The historical overview of Part 1 contains an essay demonstrating William Arthur Pouchers influence on the 20th Century cosmetics industry as well as a chapter detailing the long history of cosmetics. Part 2 is a comprehensive listing of the properties and uses of common cosmetic types, ranging from Antiperspirants through to Sunscreen preparations. There are an increased number of raw materials in use today and their chemical, physical and safety benefits are carefully discussed along with formulation examples. The many additions since the last edition demonstrate the dramatic recent expansion in the industry and how changes in legal regulations affecting the development, production and marketing of old, established and new products are operative almost worldwide. Information on specialist products for babies and others is included within individual chapters. The chapters in Part 3 support and outline the current guidelines regarding the assessment and control of safety and stability. This information is presented chemically, physically and microbiologically. Part 3 chapters also detail requirements for the consumer acceptability of both existing and new products. Those legal regulations now in force in the EU, the USA and Japan are carefully described in a separate chapter and the remaining chapters have been extensively updated to explain the technical and practical operations needed to comply with regulations when marketing. This information will be invaluable to European Union and North American companies when preparing legally required product information dossiers. The final chapters in Part 4 contain useful information on the psychology of perfumery as well as detailing methods for the conduct of assessment trials of new products. As ingredient labelling is now an almost universal legal requirement the International Nomenclature of Cosmetics Ingredients (INCI) for raw materials has been used wherever practicable. The advertised volume is the 10th edition of what was previously known as volume 3 of Pouchers Cosmetics and Soaps. Due to changes in the industry there are no plans to bring out new editions of volume 1 and 2. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN, Momence,IL, Commerce,GA.

        Roosevelt’s Religion

New York and Cincinnati: The Abingdon Press, 1923. - Second printing. On the front free endpaper INSCRIBED "To ‘Houdini’ with sincere wellwishes [sic] from Your Friend, Christian F. Reisner, New York 6/16 ‘24." At the bottom of the endpaper is a mass-produced ex-libris "This book belongs to"; signed by Beatrice Houdini. On the opposite endpaper Beatrice (probably) has placed the "magic photo" of Houdini and Theodore Roosevelt and she has written underneath their images their names and "on board Imperator 1913." A further Roosevelt association is provided by a small envelope tipped to the top of the free endpaper; this contains the card of The Reverend William Turner Levy who, like the author of the book, was also a New Yorker who became a minister and who wrote books, one of which was on Eleanor Roosevelt who was a longtime friend. Eleanor was a niece of Theodore Roosevelt. The card of Levy conveys the book to another "Reverend," who unfortunately bore a common name and thus cannot be further identified. Photo measures 5 x 3.5 in. Bookplate is 2.4 x 3.9 in. oblong. Book is in Near Fine condition without dust jacket. Photograph is fresh as it has not been exposed to much light in its many decades. There is some transference from the chemicals in the first name of the signature of the author to the chest area of the figures in the photograph. This fluctuates between invisible, slightly visible, very visible as one varies the angle between the photo surface and the dominant light source. You may regard this as a flaw or a further bit of magic serendipity, especially as Christian Reisner is so anxious to demonstrate on slender evidence that Roosevelt was an active Christian, and when one considers the complex attitudes Houdini, the son of a rabbi, had toward Judaism, Christianity, the afterlife, spiritualism, conjuring, and fakery in general; see the Kenneth Silverman biography of Houdini for extensive treatments on the beliefs and ambitions of Houdini. The photo was pasted down a bit carelessly, so there are some ripples in the white border areas. Online by putting the names of TR and Houdini into a search engine one can easily find the history of this photo. The two men stood on the deck of the liner on its return voyage from Europe with 5 other men; Houdini later "magically" erased the other men from the image so it would look as though he and Roosevelt were alone together. Some sources claim that TR was the American most admired by Houdini. This seems plausible as both men had iron wills to become "strong men" in escape from confinements that would baffle the average man. One became one of the most celebrated performers in the US, Europe as far east as Moscow, and even to Australia, where he also piloted the first official air flight. The other became the Rough Rider and President who carried a big stick, then became a great explorer; each produced many books and played with mingling facts with legends; speaking of which did TR really rescue Houdini and Bess from an attack in a Midwest mining town after a Houdini performance in the 1890s, or was that simply a legend useful to each? In any case this is a wonderful association copy of two men who were great celebrities in the early decades of the 20th century and who have remained alive in the imaginations of a large percentage of those who have come after them. And Beatrice Houdini had a large role to play in not only the emotional life of her husband, but also as a partner of 20 years in his magical performances. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Traumatic shock. Presentation copy

New York: Appleton, 1923. Cannon, Walter B. (1871-1945). Traumatic shock. xvii, 201pp. Text illustrations. New York & London: D. Appleton, 1923. 263 x 173 mm. Original gilt-stamped cloth, one corner bumped. Light toning but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Cannon to Sir Cuthbert Wallace (1867-1944) on slip tipped to front pastedown: ?"To Sir Cuthbert Wallace with gratitude for your kindness and encouragement during our work in old Béthune. Walter B. Cannon.?" First Edition. Cannon, professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School, was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century, making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion, the autonomic nervous system, homeostasis, and stress response. ?"In the fall of 1916, before the United States entered World War I, the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917, he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher, first secretary of the Medical Research Committee, to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at Béthune. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon, the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock?" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at Béthune, Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace, consulting surgeon to the First Army, British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that ?"We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace, later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace, who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts?" (p. ix).
