DER UNTERGANG DES ABENDLANDES UMRISSE EINER MORPHOLOGIE DER WELTGESCHICHTE

Münich: C.H. Beck'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung / Oskar Beck 1923, 1922 & 1923.. Three volumes. First two uniform cloth backed printed boards, third printed wrappers. Light hand soiling to bindings, with patch of surface rubbing to upper board of second volume, uniform tanning to text stock, otherwise very good. Uniform later printings, with the separately printed index volume. Signed by Spengler on the half-title of the first volume, and thus uncommon. "The outlook for western civilization, to Spengler, is gloomy. The end is at hand. Democracy, the typical product of western civilization, will be wiped out by caesaren autocracy. The tremendous success of the book among the semi-literate, especially in Germany and America, during the period after the First World War, is a politico- sociological phenomenon that has nothing to do with the intrinsic merits or demerits of this 'new outlook on history and the philosophy of destiny', as the author himself described the aim of his book ... It was the major prophet, Toynbee, who took up the mantle that fell from the minor prophet, Spengler - Printing and the Mind of Man. The first volume (first published under another imprint in 1918, is here denoted the "dreiunddreissigste bis siebenundvierzigste völlig umgestaltete auflage," and the second "einundreissigste bis siebzigstes auflage einundfünfzigstes bis siebzigstes tausend." PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 410.

Original Rivoli Theatre Opening Night Program for the First Talking Picture [April 15, 1923]

New York: The Rivoli, 1923. 1st Edition. Other Other. Very Good. (Ephemera) Original program for the week of April 15, 1923 at the Rivoli Theatre on Broadway at 49th Street in New York City. This amazing piece of cinematic history is the opening night program for the first commercial screening of motion pictures with sound-on-film! Program also features various music and dance acts as well as the silent film “Bella Donna” starring Pola Negri. Includes advertisement for the silent film “Hollywood” from Paramount Picture. Measures 7.75 x 5.25 inches [7.75 x 15.75 unfolded]. Some toning and fold marks. Edge wear with some small tears. Marking/writing on back of program. Slightly delicate, but Very Good condition overall. In 1919, American inventor Lee de Forest filed the first patent on his sound-on-film process, and over the next four years he worked to improve his system. The De Forest Phonofilm process recorded sound directly onto film so that synchronization between picture and sound could be depended on if it was achieved during recording. In November 1922, de Forest established his De Forest Phonofilm Company in New York City, but none of the Hollywood movie studios expressed any interest in his invention. After a few demonstrations to the press and various engineering societies, de Forest premiered 18 short films made in Phonofilm at the Rivoli Theater in New York City on April 15, 1923. He was forced to show his films in independent theaters such as the Rivoli, since Hollywood movie studios controlled all major theater chains. The short films made by de Forest [primarily as demonstrations to try to interest the major studios in Phonofilm] are considered particularly valuable to entertainment historians, as they include recordings of a wide variety of both well-known and less famous American vaudeville and British music hall acts which would otherwise have been forgotten.

Map dated November 1923 for an apparent plot to capture a military barracks, probably in Weimar

1923. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. 41.5cm x 33cm, light paper printed two sides and folded to 10.5cm x 16.5cm. Some separatations along the folds otherwise in very good condition. This document is dated 26 November 1923 in Weimar, and originates with the office of the military authority of Thuringia. It states that a sketch has been found in the briefcase of Dr. Neubauer, a member of Parliament for Thuringia, relating to a plan to capture a military barracks. The sketch [3645_02 and 03] is a diagram of a barracks (its location is not given) with messages superimposed on it such as "march in," "turn off lanterns," "deploy at the same time," "break through fence" and "ambush" (Ãœberfall) presumably instructions for attacking different parts of the barracks. This document is stamp signed by the Chief of Staff, von Livonius, and the Captain of the General Staff (Hauptmann im Generalstab), whose signature reads simply "Hell." HELL, General Ernst-Eberhard (1887-1973). Hell's signature certifies the accuracy of the copy (of the sketch, one assumes). Ernst-Eberhard Hell was a German general who held several divisional commands and was later elevated to Corps level during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Ernst-Eberhard Hell was captured by Soviet troops in August 1944 during the Jassy-Kishinev Offensive (August 1944) and was held until 1955. Awards and decorations, Iron Cross (1914), 2nd Class (11 September 1914), 1st Class (14 August 1916), Eiserner Halbmond, Cross of Honor in 1934, Iron Cross (1939), 2nd Class (12 May 1940), 1st Class (17 May 1940), Eastern Front Medal, German Cross in Gold (14 June 1942), Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Knight's Cross on 1 February 1943 as General der Artillerie and commander of VII. Armeekorps, 400th Oak Leaves on 4 June 1944 as General der Artillerie and commander of VII. Armeekorps, Mentioned in the Wehrmachtbericht (12 March 1944) quoted from Wikipedia Map is to do with an apparent plot to capture a military barracks, probably in Weimar. There is no further comment about the significance of this plan or any indication of the action taken in response to it, though the man mentioned in connection with the incriminating map is said to be a government official. Written in German with English summary translation available. The map is dated in November 1923, which may be significant since it is the same month in which Hitler's attempted Munich Beer Hall Putsch occurred. Could this planned uprising intercepted in Weimar have been intended to support that early Nazi attempted coup? Weimar was the seat of Germany's parliament at the time, so seizing the Weimar barracks ( if that was the intended target) might have made sense as a threat to the national government. It was definitely a time of great political unrest in Germany, and the Nazis were not the only enemies of the government.

Two original images transmitted circa 1923 by "Radiovision" by C. Francis Jenkins

Washington DC: C. FRANCIS JENKINS, 1923. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. Two original images transmitted in circa 1923 by "Radiovision" and his written and inscribed 1925 book, "Vision By Radio"Washington DC, C. Francis Jenkins (1867-1934)TWO OF THE FIRST IMAGES CIRCA 1923 TRANSMITTED BY C. FRANCIS JENKINS OVER RADIO WAVES USING HIS MECHANICAL TELEVISION TECHNOLOGY.Two of the actual photographs he transmitted c1923. As far as we know there is one original in the Library Of Congress in the copyright collection and seven others with the same provenance as ours, now in a private television museum. We know of no others in public or private collections.[Sybil Almand] transmitted Photograph circa 1923: 4 1/2" x 2 13/16", image 3 3/8" x 2 3/8". Verso stamped in purple ink: " This photograph was sent /and received by Radio./ Jenkins Laboratories/Washington, D.C." [Black and white photograph, head and shoulders image of Sybil Almand] Sybil Almand was on the staff of Jenkins Laboratories and, hence, was one of the first television researchers in the world. She may have been the first woman involved in television research but this needs further research. Photograph reproduced in Jenkin's 1925 book, Vision By Radio, on page [19]. On page 17, it states: " This and succeeding pages are examples of photographs received by radio from a distance by the Jenkins system, some of them from Washington to Philadelphia, and represent the best work done in 1922, 1923, and 1924. " Capt Kurado transmitted Photograph circa 1923: 2 13/16" x 3 7/16", closed tear in blank space to right of text 5/8" long. ". Front Japenese character roughly translate to "On September 26, 1923, I visited to observe the radio transmission of a high-speed motion picture at ?? of Mr. Jenkins. Kuroda". Verso stamped in blue ink: " This photograph was/ sent and received by Radio/ Time/Distance/Radio Pictures Corp./Washington, D.C." Manuscript inscription in black ink in C. Francis Jenkins' hand: " First/ Japanese Radio/ message in/ native characters/sig. Capt Kurado " Similar Japanese text photograph reproduced in Jenkin's 1925 book, Vision By Radio, on page at page 38: Black and white photograph of a similar text in Japanese calligraphy, but our copy is NOT this text pictured on page 38.The two transmitted "radiovision" photographs are unique and incredibly important in science and history of television.JENKINS' INSCRIBED BOOK:JENKINS, C.[harles] Francis. 1925. Vision By Radio. Radio Photographs. Radio Photograms. Washington, D.C.: Jenkins Laboratories, Inc. Dark green cloth, 8vo, gilt titles. (6), half title leaf, title leaf, frontis, [3], 4-139 pp., [140]. The front endpaper with the following inscription in ink: " Mr & Mrs John Tonkin In appreciations of their interest in the author's work C.Francis Jenkins, Sept 1st. 1927"It is believed these two original photographs were laid in loosely at the pages where the image was reproduced in Jenkin's own copy of his book, Vision By Radio. Radio Photographs. Radio Photograms. 1925 HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF TWO PHOTOS & SIGNED BOOK OFFERED:Charles Francis Jenkins ( 1867-1934) is recognized as the earliest major American television pioneer. Albert Abramson, whose History Of Television, 1880 To 1941 is recognized as authoritative, tells us that as early as 1894, C. Francis Jenkins wrote an article about a device for transmitting pictures by electricity. Using the prismatic ring approach to mechanical television, which Jenkins invented, it was reported that he transmitted the image of a woman by radio on June 14, 1923. Abramson says "Whether 'live' or a photograph, this was the first transmission of television by radio ever reported." ( page 60). Others, such as Bingley give credit both to Jenkins and Baird as the first to demonstrate actual television images, in 1925. However before the transmission of a Dutch wind mill moving in 1925, Jenkins and others state that he was transmitting photographs by radio in 1922, 1923, and 1924. Radio News and Popular Radio reported transmissions from December, 1923. The photographs he transmitted are reproduced in Vision By Radio. Radio Photographs. Radio Photograms. Even Baird, although he disparaged Jenkins' images as "blurry" and his machine as expensive said in a September 27, 1924 letter to his backer Will Day " Up to the present the only other man who has been able to demonstrate anything has been C.F. Jenkins…I cannot say whether Jenkins was first or not but as our systems are quite different it does not much matter. " ( Kamm and Baird, John Logie Baird. A Life, 2002, page 53)."Jenkins moved on to work on television. He published an article on "Motion Pictures by Wireless" in 1913, but it was not until 1923 that he transmitted moving silhouette images for witnesses, and it was June 13, 1925 that he publicly demonstrated synchronized transmission of pictures and sound. He was granted the U.S. patent No. 1,544,156 (Transmitting Pictures over Wireless) on June 30, 1925 (filed on March 13, 1922)." The legacy of C. Francis Jenkins of which these items are part of his history and accomplishments…Charles Francis Jenkins was "...the only man in history who was present at the birth of both the motion picture and television."---Albert Abramson, television historian & author--"To C. Francis Jenkins we owe the motion picture." ---Homer Croy, author & screenwriter"Every filmmaker-from D.W. Griffith to Steven Spielberg-owes a debt of gratitude to C. Francis Jenkins...his technologies gave rise to the motion picture industry..." ---The Franklin Institute.

        The Sun Field

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons. 1923. First. First edition. Pencil owner's name on the front fly, a couple of small splash marks and a small sunned patch near the front gutter, a very good or better copy in near fine dustwrapper with a few very small nicks at the corners. According to McCue's, Baseball by the Books: A History and Bibliography of Baseball Fiction (pg. 25): "The first novel with serious baseball content aimed at an adult audience. The book is narrated by a former sportswriter, as Broun was, in love with a free-spirited, intellectual feminist, as was Broun's wife, while she falls for a baseball player who is clearly modeled on Babe Ruth. Numerous players of the early 1920s appear by name." Exceptionally uncommon in any sort of reasonably attractive dustwrapper .

Sammlung von 1 eigenh. Brief mit U. und 2 eigenh. Postkarten mit U.

Berlin-Charlottenburg, 10. Februar 1923, 13. Februar 1923 u. vor 20. Februar 1923. Kl.-4to u. 8vo. 6 SS. Gelocht.. An Direktor Grevenberg in Graz wegen einer Aufführung seiner Oper "Der Schatzgräber". I. 10.
