        Reminiscences Of A Stock Operator

New York: George H. Doran Company, 1923. First edition of this Wall Street classic. Octavo, original orange cloth. In near fine condition with the spine gilt bright. With a signed quote from Edwin Lefevre laid in which reads, "When angels walk across the sky/ On God-sent errands, near of far/ To keep their golden sandals dry/They merely step from star to star! Edwin Lefevre." Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Desirable in this condition and with the autographed quotation. First published in 1923, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is the most widely read, highly recommended investment book ever. Generations of readers have found that it has more to teach them about markets and people than years of experience. It tells the thinly disguised biography of Jesse Livermore, a remarkable character who first started speculating in New England bucket shops at the turn of the century. Livermore, who was banned from these shady operations because of his winning ways, soon moved to Wall Street where he made and lost his fortune several times over. What makes this book so valuable are the observations that Lefèvre records about investing, speculating, and the nature of the market itself. "A must-read classic for all investors, whether brand-new or experienced" (William O'Neil).

        Alpenlandschaft mit Hütte.

      O. O., 1923.. Aquarellierte blaue Schreibtusche auf Konstruktionszeichenkarton. 360:235 mm. Unten rechts signiert und datiert "R. Höss. 1923.". - Einige kleine Druckstellen; insgesamt wohlerhalten. Erworben von den Nachfahren der Familie des Infanteriegenerals und Eichenlaubträgers Karl Eibl (1891-1943).

The World Crisis, a remarkable set of British first editions with five dated inscriptions from Churchill to his Aunt and significant annotations by her son, Churchill's Cousin, concerning the Battle of Jutland

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition. Hardcover. This is an extraordinary inscribed and annotated British first edition set of Churchill's history of the First World War. Each of the five books (the 1916-1918 book was issued in two volumes) is inscribed and dated by Churchill to his Aunt Clara. Clarita "Clara" Jerome Frewen (1851-1935) was the eldest sister of Churchill's mother and wife of Moreton Frewen, the famously slipshod editor of Churchill's first book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force. Three inscriptions are dated pre-publication and all five are warmly personal, with Churchill using only his first name. The inscriptions alone would make the set a prize, but it is the second family association that makes the set a unique piece of history. The books passed to Clara's son and Churchill's first cousin, Captain Oswald Moreton Frewen (1887-1958).Oswald was a career naval officer who served under Churchill's leadership as First Lord of the Admiralty during both the First and Second World Wars. Oswald participated in every naval engagement in the North Sea during the First World War, after the war helped the Admiralty prepare the official history of the Battle of Jutland, and during the Second World War served as King's Harbour Master of Scapa Flow. THE ANNOTATIONS: Of note, according to the Frewen family, Oswald's own 1916 diary "is considered to be part of the United Kingdom's national archives because of his description of the Battle of Jutland," with a claim upon the volume made by the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth, England. Oswald's extensive annotations in this set appear throughout the two 1916-1918 volumes and run to thousands of words. These annotations are remarkably informed and informative, sharply critical, and compellingly interesting - to both collectors and scholars. Some of Oswald's criticism may be attributed to his partisan admiration of Admiral Jellicoe, some perhaps to jealousy toward a famous cousin. Nonetheless, Oswald's comments are not without some expressed admiration for his Cousin Winston's gifts - both literary and as a leader. And tempering the sharp criticism is the knowledge that Oswald actively sought - and received - his cousin Winston's inscriptions in books that Oswald read and annotated until Oswald's death in 1958. We have transcribed the entirety of Captain Frewen's annotations, producing a 22-page document which we will provide upon request. CONDITION: This set is in sound, unrestored condition, with the original bindings firm and intact - well short of fine but of course to be prized far more for provenance and content than for condition. Five volumes are first edition, first printing. Volume I, the 1911-1914 volume, is first edition, second printing (printed only three days after publication of the first printing). The blue cloth bindings are square and tight, but show some of the scuffing endemic to the smooth navy cloth and some wear to extremities. We note the following: slight outward warping to the 1915 volume boards; some minor fraying at the head of the 1915 volume spine; minor blistering of The Aftermath cloth (to which this particular volume was prone) on the upper front cover and lower right of the spine; minor discoloration spots to The Eastern Front front cover and a wrinkle (binding error rather than blistering) in the upper rear cover cloth. Spotting is substantially confined to the page edges and first and final leaves, the heaviest instance within the set observed on the inscribed page of the 1915 volume. We note no previous ownership marks beyond the author's inscriptions and Captain Frewen's annotations. The set is housed in a navy cloth slipcase with gilt print and decoration. PROVENANCE: This set has remained in the Frewen family until now, providing both sterling provenance and a unique opportunity for collectors.         Inom Baggemosa ägogränser. Bygdehistorier.

      - Växjö, 1923. Originalupplaga. 21x14 cm. 126 s. The inscription says that this is ?a book in need of a tender treatment [reception]? & ?as a memory of the 22nd of July 1954? With the signature of Carl Moberg in pencil on the title, most probable the author's father. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973), Swedish journalist, social critic, and one of Sweden?s foremost authors of the 20th century. He was born in Algutsboda in the province of Småland, where his father served as a soldier. Moberg worked in his youth with farming and forestry. After a few years of schooling, he worked as a journalist at different provincial newspapers, in which he also published his first short stories. His breakthrough as an author came in 1927 with the novel ?Raskens. The Story of a Soldier?s Family?, where he depicts the life of the tenant farmers in 19th century Småland. His foremost work, which has been widely translated and is considered one of the finest epic works in Swedish 20th century literature, is ?The Emigrant Novels? (1949-1959). In this tetralogy he describes the Swedish emigration to North America through the story of the farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina. Moberg was politically engaged and always fought for individual rights, and for the abolition of the monarchy and the State Church of Sweden. He intervened in affairs of corrupt legal practice and published the bestselling book ?Why I am a Republican? (1955). His political views were inspired by his visits to USA and by the Swiss constitution. Moberg had a love affair with a woman named Kristina, whose name he used for the main character Kristina from Duvemåla of ?The Emigrant Novels? This love affair has remained unknown for over half a century, until a collection of his novels, all inscribed by Moberg to Kristina [Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005)], appeared on the market. Judging from the tone in the inscriptions, the relation between Moberg and Kristina was initially intimate and loving, and gradually devolving into affection. In the early inscriptions from the 1940s Moberg writes, for instance: ?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved!?, and in the play ?Chastity? he writes: ?Vilhelm Moberg?s chastity ? what is left of it is hereby dedicated to Kristina? The later in-scriptions from the 1960s contain phrases like: ?with a devout greeting? and ?from her affectionate Vilhelm? In the copy of ?The Emigrants? (?Utvandrarna?, 1949) Moberg writes: ?To Kristina, my be loved, who has lent her name to the female main character in this book, with gratitude and love from The Author.? In the last inscription, in the pocket edition of ?The Emigrant Novels? from 1969, he returns to the fact that she has given her name to Kristina from Duvemåla, which shows that the thought of her had occupied his mind during all these years, and it is also a sign of her probable influence on his writing from 1945 onwards. What further strengthens this opinion is the copy of ?Our Unborn Son?, a play from 1945, which deals with the issue of abortion. This is the only one of these books that has been bestowed with a fine leather binding, with a pocket at end of the volume where Kristina has collected newspaper cuttings on the book and its author, suggesting that the theme of this novel was essential to her. The book was translated into Danish in 1947, and in the collection there is a copy of the Danish edition which has been inscribed to Kristina by the translator thus: ?? This book, which is partly about you?? [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In Petra, being a sequel to 'Nisi Dominus'

Ditchling: S. Dominic's Press, 1923. Octavo. vii, 26pp. First edition. Printed in red and black, with a preface and notes by Eric Gill and Hilary Pepler. Illustrated with three wood engravings by David Jones and six by Gill. This is the fortieth St. Dominic's Press publication, and one of the few to be accurately dated by the printers. There are a number of variant bindings recorded for this title, but the binding on this particular copy is only recorded in Taylor/Sewell, who describe it as "probably unique." The book is bound in quarter red cloth, black and white patterned paper over boards, with a yellow paper label showing a reduced version of Desmond Chute's St. Dominic engraving. Inside, red and white patterned paper reused from Ethel Mairet's "Vegetable Dyes" has been used as a wrapper around the text. A black title label printed in silver is adhered to the front of the wrapper. Spine lightly faded, otherwise a fine example of a rare S. Dominic's Press variant.

- "Warum handgebunden? - Erstausgabe, EA, erste Auflage in sehr guter Erhaltung (einige Deckel minimal verzogen, sonst tadellos) Sprache: de Gewicht in Gramm: 2000 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        "Nächtliche Altstadtgasse".

Atomic structure and spectral lines. Translated from the third German edition by Henry L. Brose.

Methuen, London 1923 - First edition in English, 8vo, pp. xiii, [1], 626; a fine copy in the original printed dust jacket (with considerable text on it touting the importance of the book) with several minor breaks at folds. Sommerfeld was one of the most advanced theoretical physicists of his day. The "extraordinary extension, enrichment, and precision of Bohr's [quantum] theory by Sommerfeld contributed decisively to its rapid and wide-spread acceptance. Only five years after Bohr's first publication Sommerfeld, recognizing that the mathematical development of this quantum-theoretical atomic model had reached a conclusion of sorts, undertook a comprehensive exposition of the field. His Atombau und Spektrallinien, of which the first edition appeared in late 1919, immediately became the bible of atomic physics, and its successive editions, appearing almost annually in the early 1920's, chronicled the progress of this field up to the eve of the introduction of quantum mechanics" (DSB). This copy with the early ownership signature of Raymond D. Douglas, MIT class of 1924 and later a professor of mathematics there. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ondes et quanta. Note de M. Louis de Broglie, présentée par M. Jean Perrin. (Séance du 10 Septembre 1923).[Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1923]. First edition.

The exceptionally rare offprint, of de Broglie's "enunciation of the epochal new principle that particle-wave duality should apply not only to radiation but also to matter ... He made the leap in his September 10, 1923, paper: <i>E = h?</i> should hold not only for photons but also for electrons, to which he assigns a 'fictitious associated wave'." (Pais, <i>Subtle is the Lord</i>, p. 436). "Louis de Broglie achieved a worldwide reputation for his discovery of the wave theory of matter, for which he received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1929. His work was extended into a full-fledged wave mechanics by Erwin Schrödinger and thus contributed to the creation of quantum mechanics" (DSB). In his first paper on wave mechanics (January 1926), Schrödinger acknowledged his debt to de Broglie, writing: "I have recently shown that the Einstein gas theory can be founded on the consideration of standing waves which obey the dispersion law of de Broglie ... The above considerations about the atom could have been presented as a generalization of these considerations" (quoted in Pais, <i>loc cit</i>., p. 439). No copies of this offprint are listed on OCLC, COPAC or BNF. KVK locates one copy only (in Germany), but we have not been able to establish with certainty whether that copy is indeed an offprint or merely an extract. No copies have appeared at auction, and we are not aware of any other copy having appeared in commerce. This copy is in very fine condition, a remarkable survival of a document consisting of a single sheet as issued in its original state.<br/><br/> In his 1905 paper 'Über einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt' ('On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light'), "Einstein postulated that light is composed of individual quanta (later called photons) that, in addition to wavelike behavior, demonstrate certain properties unique to particles. In a single stroke he thus revolutionized the theory of light and provided an explanation for, among other phenomena, the emission of electrons from some solids when struck by light, called the photoelectric effect" (<i>Britannica</i>). "The central idea of de Broglie's work, contained in [the present paper], was that the formula <i>E = h?</i> by which Einstein had related the frequency <i>?</i> of light to the energy <i>E</i> of light quanta should not only apply to light but also to material particles. For a particle at rest with mass <i>m</i> he concluded, since its energy is <i>E = mc2, that it performs an internal oscillation with frequency <i>? = mc2/h</i>. He considered the motion of a particle, carefully taking into account the effects of the special theory of relativity, and was able to construct a wave which was always <i>in phase</i> with the internal oscillation of the particle ... At the end of [the present paper] he gave an application of his theory by showing that he could naturally explain the discrete electron orbits in Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom. Each stable orbit should be closed in the sense that the same phase should be assumed by the matter wave after completion of an orbit" (Brandt, <i>The Harvest of a Century</i>, Chapter 32, p. 133). <br/><br/> De Broglie published two further notes on matter waves in the same volume of <i>Comptes Rendus</i>, which gave applications of his theory of matter waves. In 'Quanta de lumière, diffraction et interférences' (24 September), he predicted on the basis of his theory that 'a stream of electrons traversing a very small aperture will show the phenomenon of diffraction.' This was experimentally observed by C. J. Davisson and L. H. Germer in 1927, work for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937. "Thus the duality of both light and matter had been established, and physicists had to come to terms with fundamental particles which defied simple theories and demanded two sets of 'complementary' descriptions, each applicable under certain circumstances, but incompatible with one another" (PMM 417). In 'Les quanta, la théorie cinétique des gaz et le principe de Fermat' (8 October), he derived a result of Planck on the kinetic theory of gases, by making the assumption that 'the state of a gas will be stable only if the waves corresponding to all the atoms form a system of stationary waves.' He also showed that "the interplay between the propagation of a particle and of its associated matter wave could be expressed in more formal terms as an identity between the fundamental variational principles of Pierre de Fermat (rays), and Pierre Louis Maupertuis (particles)" (DSB). <br/><br/> When de Broglie published these notes he was practically unknown in scientific circles, although his elder brother Maurice had already done important experimental work on X-rays and his illustrious family was famous in France. His ideas became widely known only with the publication of his doctoral thesis <i>Recherches sur la théorie des quanta</i> in the summer of 1924, which is an elaboration of the content of the three notes. On receiving a copy of the thesis from Paul Langevin, de Broglie's doctoral advisor, Einstein said that it "lifted a corner of the great veil" (Isaacson, <i>Einstein: His Life and Universe</i>, p. 327). Einstein's support for de Broglie's ideas brought them to the attention of the principal actors in the development of quantum theory, notably Schrödinger, whose wave mechanics was an extension and completion of de Broglie's work. De Broglie's book <i>Ondes et mouvements</i> (1926), selected by Carter and Muir for the <i>Printing and the Mind of Man</i> exhibition and catalogue (1967), was a further expansion of ideas first published in the notes and thesis.. Offprint from Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Académie des Sciences, Tome 177. 4to, pp. [507]-510. Single sheet as issued, folded once, very fine
