        The Tomb of Tutankhamen.

      London: Cassell and Company, Ltd,, 1923-1927-1933. Discovered by the late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter. 3 volumes, large octavo. Original dark yellow cloth, gilt lettered spines and front covers, pictorial endpapers. Illustrated throughout. Spines rolled, a few nicks at extremities of spines, front inner hinge of volume III split but sound, a very good set. First edition, first impressions, of Carter's own account of the most spectacular archaeological discovery of the 20th century. "In the summer of 1922 Carter persuaded Carnarvon to allow him to conduct one more campaign in the valley. Starting work earlier than usual Howard Carter opened up the stairway to the tomb of Tutankhamen on 4 November 1922. Carnarvon hurried to Luxor and the tomb was entered on 26 November. The discovery astounded the world: a royal tomb, mostly undisturbed, full of spectacular objects. Carter recruited a team of expert assistants to help him in the clearance of the tomb, and the conservation and recording of its remarkable contents. On 16 February 1923 the blocking to the burial chamber was removed, to reveal the unplundered body and funerary equipment of the dead king. Unhappily, the death of Lord Carnarvon on 5 April seriously affected the subsequent progress of Carter's work. In spite of considerable and repeated bureaucratic interference, not easily managed by the short-tempered excavator, work on the clearance of the tomb proceeded slowly, but was not completed until 1932. Carter handled the technical processes of clearance, conservation, and recording with exemplary skill and care. A popular account of the work was published in three volumes, The Tomb of Tutankhamen (1923?-33), the first of which was substantially written by his principal assistant, Arthur C. Mace" (ODNB).

Housed together in a custom slipcase. $19,500.First edition of Carter’s account of the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb, including the scarce third volume, with 247 dramatic illustrations, inscribed in Volume I: “Howard Carter, in remembrance of many happy days, March 1924."When Carter entered King Tut's tomb in 1922, he bridged 3000 years separating the reign of the Boy-King from the modern world. This first detailed account, richly illustrated with hundreds of plates after photographs taken by Harry Burton, includes images from the discovery of Tut's sepulchral chamber, the excavation of the site and hundreds of catalogued artifacts. Carter began working on Egyptian digs at the age of 17, working his way up to until he was "appointed by the Egyptian government to be inspector-in-chief of the monuments of Upper Egypt and Nubia with headquarters at Thebes. In 1902 he began excavations in the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings, discovered the sepulchres of Hatshepsut (as sovereign) and Tuthmosis IV, and installed electric lighting in several of the larger royal tombs at Thebes and in the rock-temple at Abu Simbel in Nubia. In 1903 Carter was transferred to the inspectorate of Lower Egypt with headquarters at Tanta… Five years later (1908)… Carter returned in order to superintend the excavations in the necropolis at Thebes being conducted by George Herbert, fifth Earl of Carnarvon [q.v.]. During the war of 1914-1918, among other discoveries, he found and cleared the long sought for tomb of Amenophis I. On 4 November 1922 he made the great discovery which will always be associated with his name, the tomb of King Tutankhamen with its extraordinary wealth of artistic treasures. Carter's records of the objects found and his handling and packing of them for transport down the Nile to Cairo were a most brilliant achievement and occupied no less than ten seasons (1922-1932). He published The Tomb of Tut-ankh-Amen and he had hoped to publish the full catalogue of all objects found, but his health failed and the work was unfinished" (DNB). Because of the Depression, the third and final volume, included here, was printed in limited numbers and is consequently quite scarce. Without dust jackets, as usual. Scattered light foxing as often, inner paper hinges expertly reinforced in Volume II, only slightest edge-wear to fresh original cloth. Rare and desirable inscribed by Carter.       1923 - EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph postcard signed with original sketches. Near Jerusalem, circa February 5, 1923. Postcard illustrated with a rendering of the Red Star Liner Belgenland, measuring 5-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches, with two sketches by Einstein on the recto and autograph letter by Einstein in German (along with an autograph letter by his traveling companion) on the verso. $49,000.Extremely rare autograph postcard signed written by Einstein during his visit to Palestineâ€"one of only a couple manuscript items from this visit known to existâ€"featuring a very rare self-portrait sketch by Einstein as well as a sketch of the traveling companion he mentions in his letter. Letter in German.Einstein writes to noted Zionist Arthur Ruppin in full (translated from German): "To my dear Mr. Ruppin, We are having unforgettable days in Palestine. With the sun shining, in cheerful company. Your wife is standing next to me and looking at what I am writing about her. She is counting the days until you come back. Yours, A. Einstein." (At the time, Ruppin had been on an extended fundraising trip in the United States, see: Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle, December 15, 1922.) Above his note, Hanna Ruppin also writes her husband (translated): "Dear Arthur, A pleasant tour of the city. Included is a picture by Prof. Einstein. Warm greetings, Hanna." True to her word, on the recto, Einstein had drawn a diminutive self-portrait (signed below) together with a rendering of "Frau Ruppin." Above the drawings, he added the words, "Jerusalem," "Heiligenschein" (or "halo") with an arrow pointing to the halo-like marks over his self-portrait's head. Einstein's depiction of himself as a rotund, almost comical figure stands in contrast to the elegantly-dressed "Frau Ruppin" with her stylish hat, shapely figure and umbrella. A newly minted celebrity following the reception of the 1921 Nobel Prize for physics, Einstein was on his return to Europe following a six-month lecture tour that took him as far as Japan in late 1922. He returned to Europe via Sri Lanka and the Suez Canal, stopping at Port Said on February 1, 1923 for two weeks in Palestine. Einstein made the stop at the invitation of Arthur Ruppin (1876-1943), an early Zionist thinker and leader. Academically trained in Germany in economics and law, Ruppin was awarded the Krupp prize in 1899 for his dissertation on Darwinism and industry. He joined the Zionist Organization in 1905 and acted as a land agent to purchase land in Palestine in order to facilitate the migration of European Jews. From 1933 to 1935, he headed the Jewish Agency which assisted German Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in settling in Palestine. At the time of Einstein's visit to Palestine, Ruppin was on an extended fundraising tour in the United States (Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle, December 15, 1922, p. 10). From Port Said, Einstein boarded a train for Jerusalem, where he was greeted not unlike a visiting head of state in light of his of recent scientific achievements, as well as his support of the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. The first night, Einstein was the guest of an aide to the British High Commissioner for the Palestinian Mandate and he spent the next two days informally touring the Old City, as well as taking a trip to the Dead Sea via Jericho. February 5th marked the first day of his official tour organized by the Zionists. Writing in his travel diary, he recorded (translated): "Tour of two Jewish colonial settlements west of Jerusalem, belonging to the city. The construction is carried out by Jewish workers' cooperative in which the leaders are elected. The workers arrive without specialized knowledge or expertise and achieve excellence after a short time. The leaders are paid no more than the workers." According to corresponding sources, Einstein's first visit that morning was to the suburb of Beth Hakerem, in the west of Jerusalem, accompanied by Hanna Ruppin, together with Hadassah Samuel and Solomon Ginzburg.       1923. London: Privately Printed for Subscribers only by T. Werner Laurie, 1923. Original parchment-backed boards with spine label, with dust jacket. First Published Edition, which is to say the Limited Edition -- being one of 1000 numbered copies signed by Conrad (this being #475). This was Conrad's dramatization of his 1907 novel of the same name, preceded by a 52-copy private issue ("... in Four Acts", Canterbury 1922). For this signed edition, it was decided to combine the short third act into the second (as Act II Scene III): thus the reduced number of acts. The play had been a flop; Conrad later observed, "I was amused by their [the critics'] touching unanimity in damning the play. It was like a chorus of parrots.".~This volume is in fine condition, with the duplicate spine label still bound in at the rear; the dust jacket is very good-plus (a few short tears, one small chip at an upper corner of the spine, spine sunned as always). Nach dem Wiederaufbau der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin wird Hofer 1949 ihr Direktor. 1955 werden kurz nach seinem Tod einige Werke auf der documenta 1 in Kassel gezeigt. Compartments ruled in gilt. Olive coloured title label ruled and lettered in gilt. Front board with decorative angular design featuring multiple gilt ruled lines and emerald green morocco onlays. Rear board with single gilt ruled border. Marbled endpapers and double gilt ruled lines on inner boards. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. The edges are just a little rubbed but overall this is an attractive hand tooled craft binding. Katherine Pountney studied under Douglas Cockerell and taugh bookbinding at the Bromley Art School in London.

      London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a collector grade full British first edition, first printing six-volume set, published between 1923 and 1931, increasingly scarce in such condition. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning, and the final volume, The Eastern Front, was produced in smaller numbers, making it challenging to fill complete sets. This is a full first printing set, with all six volumes in near fine or better condition. The bindings are unusually clean, bright, and tight, with vivid spine gilt, excellent shelf presentation, and only minor wear primarily confined to extremities. The Eastern Front is a treat, as we rarely see copies this clean. The beautiful condition of the binding is explained by differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to dust jacket flaps, suggesting that this copy was long jacketed. The contents remain crisp and bright with spotting confined to the page edges. The Aftermath binding is also worthy of particular note, showing none of the blistering of the cloth endemic to the first printing and with nearly pristine contents. The 1911-1914 volume is the first state, lacking the errata slip. The contents of all six volumes are bright, with contents that feel unread. Modest spotting appears primarily confined to the page edges of the 1911-1914, 1915, and Eastern Front volumes. The same armorial bookplate – that of Reginald Arthur Loyd – is affixed to the pastedowns of the 1915 and 1916-1918 volumes. Loyd appears to have served in the British Army during the First World War. The only other previous ownership mark we find is an inked owner name and date of “Apr 1923” – the month of publication – on the 1911-1914 volume front free endpaper. Original red cloth hardback binding, gilt titling to spine, bright near fine with slight general wear and just a few marks to boards, unusually the spine is bright, most copies are quite faded. Contents clean and tight, a little spotting to the front and rear free endpapers, one line inscription to the top of the front free endpaper dated 1923, otherwise unmarked. A near fine tight copy. .

Number one hundred and eight of one hundred and fifty-five copies, 'numbered and signed' according to the colophon, but I can see no evidence of it being signed (presumably as issued?). Printed on Zanders handmade paper by The Bremer Press in Munich, with five hand-coloured double-page landscapes by Annette von Eckardt. First Edition. Quarter Cloth and Boards. Good+. Lawrence."This early book of Lawrence's poetry features poems, many of an erotic nature, on natural subjects, including fruits, trees, flowers, animals, and birds: "The proper way to eat a fig, in society,/ Is to split it in four, holding it by the stump,/ And open it, so that it is a glittering, rosy, moist, honied,/ heavy-petalled four-petalled flower./ Then you throw away the skin/… After you have taken off the blossom with your lips…/ Every fruit has its secret." Lawrence also here includes his poetry of America: "You have cajoled the souls of millions of us/ America…".
