Las Seiscientas Apotegmas y Otras Obras En Verso.

Sociedad De Bibliófilos Españoles, Madrid 1923 - CXVI - 330pp.en papel de hilo. Edición numerada de solo 300 ejemplares. Perfecta encuadernación firmada por Brugalla a plena piel. Lomera con nervios. Cantos fileteados. Cortes dorados. Y guardas enmarcadas en piel decorada. =Juan Rufo Gutiérrez1 (n. Manuscript diaries recording the 1923 earthquake in Kobe.

1923. 7 volumes, duodecimo (130 x 115 mm). Bound by Asprey in dark green morocco, titles to spines and front boards gilt. Each volume with one page per day and additional blank pages at the rear. Spines lightly sunned, light wear to extremities, spine ends of a couple of volumes chipped, text blocks gently toned. Overall in very good condition. Seven manuscript diaries by James Tennant (1852-1933) and his daughter Sheena Kendall (1883-1974). Of the diaries, six are by Sheena Kendall and dated between 1919 and 1924; the final volume is her father's diary for 1923. The diaries, most fully written out, detail life among the expatriate community in Kobe during the early 1920s and give a personal account of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. James Tennant (hereafter JT) was a Scottish industrialist hailing from Fairlieburne, Fairlie, Ayrshire. He served as partner and director of a range of companies, including Charles Tennant & Co., United Alkali, North Eastern Electric Supply, and Eastern Paper Mills. Sheena Kendall (hereafter SK) was the youngest of Tennant's six children. In 1919 she married Herbert "Ken" Kendall (1881-1941) with whom she travelled to Japan, where he worked at the P&O office in Kobe. With the exception of a few months (April-September) in 1922, SK remained in Kobe with her husband; JT joined them sometime in early 1923, though the exact date is unclear. The earliest volume begins in London, with SK working as an assistant to Major William Byam (1882-1963), an authority on trench fever, at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Euston. Much of her spare time is taken up by socializing or musical pursuits. She marries her husband on 31 July, and after a honeymoon on Loch Goil, they set out for Japan from Purfleet on 2 October, arriving in Kobe on 4 December. The early entries for SK's time in Japan are dominated by descriptions of the voyage and the ship, and their new life among the foreign residents of Kobe. Overall, the Kendalls' life in Kobe shows little interplay with the Japanese. While SK goes on excursions around Kobe, as well as further afield to Osaka and Hong Kong, she socializes only within the privileged community of British expatriates and her husband's colleagues at P&O. SK seems to find the Japanese language and culture distinctly foreign, with the language especially hard to grasp. However, some of the architecture appeals to her, as evident from an excursion to Nikko where she finds the temples to be "marvellous Â… & the detail in the work & the brilliance of colouring is astonishing." Likewise, JT's diary for 1923 initially outlines his daily life, touching upon his work, social life, sports, and music, the latter an interest he shares with his daughter and which they indulge in together in Japan by visiting various concerts. However, the lull of day-to-day life is brutally interrupted by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1 September 1923. SK's entry on that day reads: "Poured with rain all night & blowing pretty hard this morning. After breakfast the Tebbutts, Mrs Edgar and I struggled out and baled the boats and got the rowing boat & the canoe up on the beach as it looked very typhoony." At this time, SK is at Hakone, and thus closer to the epicenter, and the latter part of the entry, written at a later point, reads: "The earthquake happened shortly after this - at 11.55 - in which the house collapsed & I nearly lost my life in it - The Tebbutts were both killed in the hotel to which they had gone to see someone." Following this, SK writes no more for the rest of 1923 and one has to look to JT's diary to get a sense of the scope of the catastrophe. On 1 September, JT describes how he experiences the earthquake in his office in Kobe: "Rose as usual - to busy morning in office - about noon I was standing talking to the shroff [i.e. cashier] when I suddenly felt faint & started to sway about for a few seconds - this was an earthquake, the first I've felt in so marked a manner - it must have been a bad one where the centre was". However, news of the disaster does not reach him until two days later. While onboard a train, he finds "an atmosphere of panic about the earthquake - Japanese papers say Yokohama & Tokio totally destroyed, including Hakone Â… It will be a long time before one can take in all the tragedy of this colossal calamity". On 5-8 September he reports "fresh developments every day, and it was very difficult & wearing for anyone to cope with each day's situation - farthermore Kozhewar collapsed on Wednesday having become thoroughly run down for some time past Â… every day brought telegrams enquiring after people, and every day one met & talked to more refugees & heard their harrowing experiences Â… Yokohama & ¾ of Tokio has been totally destroyed, probably some 250,000 people killed, some in dreadful circumstances, & the loss in property is said to be Yen 5000,000,000". JT continues to make references to refugees and survivors that arrive in Kobe ("Kozhewar appeared for the first time in the morning for ½ a day, helpless in both arms, but otherwise allright if weak"). And even three and a half months later, on 22 December, JT sees "signs of the great disaster at Kozu & Yokohama stations - the most friteful [sic] things are the tiny shelters of corrugated iron in which the poor live amid the desolation". The effect on SK is apparent in her father's entries, which make note of her anxiety and worry (15 September; 5 December; 9 December). On 1 January 1924, SK finally returns to her diary and writes: "After a lapse of four months in which I ceased writing this diary I must make a fresh start with a new year. My last entry was at Hakone at about 11 o'c on the morning of September 1st. An hour later I came as near to a violent death as I trust I ever shall - & the earthquake seems to have joggled me temporarily out of my diary keeping habits. However here we are again". By early March 1924 the Kendalls are getting ready to leave Japan. They sail for Britain at the end of March and arrive at Tilbury on 9 May. Thereafter SK falls again into her Scottish and English routine, the volume for 1924 ending while she is on a visit to Paris. Taken as a whole, the seven volumes present a vivid, evocative and informative picture of the privileged life of the British expatriate merchant community in Japan in the period immediately following the First World War, with the 1923 entries of father and daughter complimenting one another nicely.

[Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; Russian.] Ania v stranie chudes [Cyrillic].

Berlin: lzdaterstov Gamayun, , 1923. Translated by V. Sirin [Vladimir Nabokov]. Octavo. Original blue paper-backed white boards, pictorial front cover illustrated by Zalshupin, top edge blue. Housed in a blue cloth chemise and blue quarter morocco and cloth slipcase. With 12 illustrations by Sergei Aleksandrovich Zalshupin. Spine toned, boards a little rubbed, contents toned. An excellent copy. First edition of Nabokov's Russian translation. It was prepared by Nabokov at the age of 24 while he was an undergraduate at Cambridge, and is an imaginative rendering of Dodgson's classic, with striking illustrations in the Russian Constructivist style. Nabokov made some minor alterations to the text, changing some of the characters' names, and parodying Slavic rather than British nursery rhymes. The first Russian translation of Alice was published in 1879, and is believed to be the work of Olga Ivanovna Timiriaseva.

The Faerie Queene Disposed into Twelve Books Fashioning XII. Morall Vertues. Together with: The Minor Poems of Edmund Spenser.

Chelsea The Ashendene Press -1925 1923 - Two volumes, folio, one of 180 copies & 200 copies respectively on Batchelor 'knight in armour' paper, there were also 12 & 15 copies printed on vellum. Printed in double column in red, blue (particularly in the Minor Poems) and black in Subiaco type with large initials printed in red and blue designed by Graily Hewitt, who also designed the opening words for each Booke of the Faerie Queene, the Greek type that appears occasionally designed by Selwyn Image for Macmillan, publisher's original brown calf-backed ivory vellum by W. H. Smith (age-toned) the first volume housed in a later cloth solander box, the spine of the second faded, all edges untrimmed as issued, internally fine. The paper for these volumes is larger in size than any used before at the Press and in the Bibliography Hornby begs any future binders to leave it alone and not trim it down thus spoiling his carefully designed proportions of the margins. The Minor Poems was the last of the Ashendene Press Folios printed in Subiaco type and it was a stupendous swansong with the superb balance of the lines of poems in two columns and with the fine colour printing and large initials. The Faerie Queene, written in the 1590s by Spenser is one of the longest poems in the English language. It follows Arthurian knights in the examination of 12 moral virtues and was a huge success in its time owing to Elizabeth I's political approval of its noble and virtuous teachings and its celebration of the Tudor dynasty. Quite a text to undertake. It took Hornby nearly two years to print it. Ashendene Bibliography XXXII & XXXV [Attributes: Hard Cover]
