ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE OF THE RARE AND BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE ART TREASURES, MANY OF WHICH CAME FROM THE J. PIERPONT MORGAN, SPITZER, BARDAC, MAURICE KANN AND RODOLPHE KANN COLLECTIONS, AMERICAN AND FOREIGN GOLD COINS, AND MANY OPERATIC COSTUMES, THE PROPERTY OF THE LATE ENRICO CARUSO

New York, 1923. 4to, recent tan linen, front cover lettered in red; spine ruled and lettered in black. (2), (340) pages; 1350 lots; fine frontispiece photograph of Caruso, with tissue guard; illustrated throughout, occasionally in color; printed announcement letter bound in front. Original printed and perforated sale registration slip tipped in. Sale announcement letter and tissue guard wrinkled; else near fine in a recent binding. The rare complete catalogue of this important and wide-ranging sale, of which coins and medals formed but a portion. Caruso (1873-1921) was an inveterate collector, and had the sagacity (as well as the means) to form highly interesting collections in a number of areas. Henry Chapman was called in to catalogue the numismatic segment of the sale, comprising lots 256-555 (which are occasionally encountered in a separate printing). The sale also included some Renaissance medals and plaquettes not included in the coin section. This full catalogue is very rarely seen: while we have offered a few copies of the separate printing of the numismatic portion of the catalogue, this is the first time in many years that we have offered the full edition of this catalogue of the great opera singer's art estate. (The later sale of coins from Caruso's estate by C. & E. Canessa, while scarce, is also encountered more frequently.) As has been noted elsewhere, worn or damaged covers appear endemic to these catalogues. While this example has a few minor flaws, it is well-preserved and in a recent binding. A rare opportunity.

The Ship that Sailed to Mars, A Fantasy. Told and Pictured by William M. Timlin. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, [1923]. First American Edition. Limited to 250 copies for the US of which this is number 43. Large quarto (12 x x 9 3/16 inches; 305 x 233 mm.). 96 pp. All on thick gray paper, comprising forty-eight mounted color plates and forty-eight mounted leaves of calligraphic text.Quarter vellum over gray boards, front cover decoratively lettered in black, spine elaborately stamped in gilt, gray end-papers. A near fine copy, the gilt on the spine bright and fresh, one of the best that we have ever seen.William Timlin (1893-1943), "born in Ashington, Northumberland, Timlin was educated in England but emigrated to South Africa before 1915 and studied art there. He did illustrations in pen and ink and watercolour, and exhibited regularly in South Africa, where he practised as an architect. He wrote stories, composed music, illustrated periodicals, produced watercolour fantasies, painted in oil, and produced etchings. His book, The Ship That Sailed to Mars, was published in 1923 and the film rights were purchased in the US, where Timlin was popular during his lifetime. It has been asserted that the illustrations to this book put him in the top ten of fantasy illustrators with Rackham, Dulac, Goble and Nielsen. He died in Kimberley, South Africa" (Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators)."The most original and beautiful children’s book of the 1920s was William M. Timlin’s masterpiece The Ship That Sailed to Mars: A Fantasy. Excelling the production values previously lavished on Willy Pogany and Harry Clarke, George Harrap published this huge and magnificent volume in November 1923, finely bound in quarter vellum richly decorated in gilt. ‘Told and Pictured by William M. Timlin’, the book contained 48 superb colour plates by the artist, alternated throughout with 48 leaves adorned with his fine calligraphic and poetic text. These pieces of art were all mounted by hand on grey matte paper, reminiscent of Harrap’s best pre-war editions de luxe, notably Pogany’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Timlin’s fantasy is a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland. His watercolours equal the best work of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson, seen to great effect in ‘The Raising of the Tower’, ‘The Celebration’, ‘The Palace Gardens’, ‘The Seven Sisters’ (living in compact little moons, each complete with doors, windows and chimneys), ‘The Jeweller’s Shop’ (‘An elf would run out from some low-browed jeweller’s shop and press a priceless ruby into his hand’), and ‘The Temple’ (‘Myriad-pinnacled, with daring spans of flying buttress and airy bridge, a place of supreme happiness’).The film rights to the book were sold in America, but the movie, which was to be called Get Off the Earth, was never completed His later series of paintings, intended as plates for a book to be entitled The Building of a Fairy City, were never published in that form, but some (including the magical ‘Fantasy and Triumphal Arch’) have been issued as postcards in South Africa" (Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children’s Book Illustration, p. 102)."Only 2000 copies were printed (including 250 copies prepared for distribution in America under the Stokes imprint). Harrap's remaining stock of the book and the original drawings were destroyed by enemy action in early 1941 and the first edition is scarce." Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 109.         [Photo Album]: Boys Brigade

Washington DC, New York, Pennsylvania. 1923-1932. Oblong quarto. Measuring 7" x 11". String-tied red leather over paper boards with "School Day Treasures" stamped on the front cover. Contains 88 sepia toned gelatin silver and some black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 2.5" x 4", most with captions. Very good album with some creasing, tears, and edgewear with near fine photographs.A boy's album kept between 1923 and 1932 during various events and schooling. The album begins in 1923 when the album owner attended a Citizens Military Training Camp. The photos show young boys in tents and "dress uniforms" performing "fatigue drills" and showing the boys standing in a line awaiting orders. From there it switches to a 1927 trip to Washington DC where they spent the summer at Fort Washington U.S. Military Training Camp. When off duty they saw the DC highlights such as the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building and even toured the District from the air in a plane. His college days are captured throughout, because of his job as an usher at the Carnegie Music Hall it is likely he attended Carnegie Mellon University in 1929. During the summer of 1929 he worked at a hotel in Lilydale, New York where he spent "most of [his] spare time in this canoe." These photos show pretty girls posing in bathing suits, boys working at the boathouse, and performing handstands on the beach. In 1931 he lived on Pelug's Farm at a campsite - he includes a hand-drawn diagram of the grounds later in the album. It isn't clear if he was working there but it seems probable. He took photos of his friends posing around the farm, animal life, and people swimming in the "ye olde swimming hole."An interesting collection of a young man's youth from childhood to young manhood, exhibiting his ties to the military and his early jobs. .

The World Crisis, full set of six British first edition, first printings, a beautiful set with noteworthy provenance

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1923. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a spectacular full British first edition, first printing six-volume set with noteworthy provenance. Published between 1923 and 1931, The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Both condition and provenance of this set are of note. This set is inscribed on the volume I half title: To | Col. Carey Evans | from | Her Excellency | June 26. 1923.? Sir Thomas John Carey Evans, MC, FRCS, IMS (1884-1947) was a career medical officer who served with distinction during the First World War with the Indian Army at Gallipoli, in Egypt, and in Mesopotamia, being twice mentioned in the despatches, awarded the Military Cross, and created a Chevalier of the Legion d?Honneur. It was also during the First World War in 1917 that Evans married Olwen Elizabeth, elder daughter of David Lloyd-George. When this first volume of The World Crisis was inscribed to Carey Evans in 1923, he was serving in India as personal physician to the Viceroy. The inscription to Carey Evans is that of Alice Edith Isaacs nee Cohen, Marchioness of Reading, GBE, CI (1866-1930). Lady Reading owed her titular ?Excellency? to her husband, Rufus Daniel Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading, GCB, GCSI, GCIE, GCVO, PC, KC (1860-1935). Lord Reading was Viceroy of India from 1921-1925. Carey Evans was knighted in 1924. A post-military medical career in London saw him become superintendent of the Hammersmith Hospital when the British Postgraduate Medical School was established there. He would end his career organizing the hospital under Second World War wartime and air-raid conditions. Many consider the British edition of The World Crisis aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning, and the final volume, The Eastern Front, was produced in smaller numbers, making it challenging to fill complete sets. This full first printing set is exceptional, each volume in near fine or better condition, most of them superior even to jacketed copies. All six volumes feel unread, with crisp, bright contents. We find no previous ownership marks other than the Volume I inscription. Spotting, endemic to the edition, appears confined to the page edges and prelims of the first two volumes. The blue cloth bindings remain unusually bright and fresh with vivid spine gilt and superlative shelf presentation. Trivial wear is evident only in minor wrinkling to spine ends and a few small corner bumps. The binding of The Aftermath proved prone to unsightly blistering of the cloth; here the trivial blistering is confined to a few spots at the fore edges. The Eastern Front is a particularly fine example, with a bright binding and pristine contents that show absolutely no spotting.       1923. Zusammen 64½ SS. (Qu.-)8vo. Mit 3 eh. Kuverts. Armee in verklärtem Licht darstellte. Vgl. Kosch I 423 und Giebisch/G. 74. - Der Brief vom 10.         Vers une architecture (First edition of 'Toward an Architecture').

Paris: G. Cres et Cie, s.d. [1923]. 8vo. Bound with the original front wrapper in a contemporary half calf with gilt title. XI, (1), 230 pages with numerous illustrations in text. Clean and bright throughout - an outstanding copy. An excellent, outsstanding copy of the FIRST EDITION of one of the most important architectural books of the 20th century. True first printing with the printed dedication to A. Amadee Ozenfant and the fictious statement "sixième édition". When the revised edition appeared 1924 the author name reduced to only Le Corbusier. The first work by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret under the name Le Corbusier. Saugnier was the pseudonym of the artist Amedee Ozenfant who for a time was closely associated with Le Corbusier. Composed of articles originally appearing in L'Espirit Nouveau, Le Corbusier's work outlines his visions of modern architecture and stresses the importance of mass production and standardized designs. While he writes that 'La maison est une machine A habiter', Le Corbusier was above all an artist who emphasized the artistic aesthetic of architecture. The book's publication served to mark '... a milestone in the development of the modern movement and Le Corbusier's influence has probably been greater than that of any other writer on architecture in this century' (Printing and the Mind of Man, PMM 413).More pictures available upon request.

PETROV-VODKIN] Samarkandiya: Iz putevykh nabroskov 1921 g. [i.e. Samarkand. Travel Notes from 1921]

Akvilon, St. Petersburg 1923 - 49, [7] pp.: ill. 27x22 cm. In publisher's color lithographed illustrated wrappers. Rubbings and small tears, edges are chipped, tears and small losses of the spine, owner's signature on p.1 and markings on the back endpaper, rare foxing of the wrappers, very light stain of the inner side of the lower end of the wrappers. Otherwise a very good clean copy. 1 of 1000 copies. First edition. Kuz'ma Sergeevich Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939) was a major modern Russian and Soviet painter, teacher and writer. Being mostly a painter he was experimenting with literature during all of his life. In 1921 Petrov-Vodkin travelled to Turkestan (Uzbekistan) with an expedition organized by Academy of History of Material Culture to study architectural monuments. He was amazed by the colors of Samarkand, called it ''the land of turquoise revelation'', and the result came in a form of 'Samarkand series' which is regarded by many as the acme of his artistic career. This book was compiled from his observations and on-the-spot sketches. Today this journal is also a very useful account of ways of his inspiration which led to creating more than 20 pieces of his famous art. These illustrated travel notes were printed on coated paper (wrappers of a cream thicker paper). For this edition the artist created 22 ink drawings (pen and brush): 14 full page images, 7 headpieces for every chapter, 1 tailpiece. Illustrations are black and white except the front cover with colored illustration - a young man in front of Central Asian ornament. Book's composition and typography is an example of avant-garde graphics. The combination of the colorful and visual text with monochrome illustrations reflects the combination of the artistic expression and aloofness at the same time which brings these illustrations closer to artists's pictorial art in which he famously used the traditions of Russian iconography. This edition was printed by Akvilon, a very important bibliophile private press of the 1920s. Akvilon published only 22 books of high art and printing standards and of small runs (500-1500).
