        The Wreck Of The Grosvenor

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, Inc, 1923 349 pgs. Blue cloth with color pictorial paste downVery Rare To Find The Dust Jacket and it is in good condition.Wreck of the Grosvenor, The, by W. Clark Russell (1874). This story of the British merchant marine is notable amongst sea novels for its fidelity to the life, some phases of which it vividly portrays; and is the best by this author. The story is told by the second mate of the ship Grosvenor; and it relates the causes of dissatisfaction amongst the crew, and the harsh treatment of the men by a brutal and inhuman captain and chief mate. The troubles reach their climax in a mutiny, in which the captain and mate are killed by the crew. The mutineers finally desert the ship near the coast of America, and are lost in a gale. The ship also goes to the bottom; but the second mate and the few who were faithful to him are rescued when almost at the last gasp, by a passing steamer. The gallant rescue from a sinking vessel in mid-ocean, of a beautiful and wealthy young lady with her father, brings into the story the necessary element of romance, and provides the second mate with a satisfactory partner for life. The chief value of the book lies in the fact that it deals in a plain, straightforward manner, and without exaggeration, with some of the most glaring evils of the mercantile marine. Events like those recorded are familiar to every man who sailed the seas during the middle and even the latter part of this century, and they show to what an extent the power given by the law may be abused when placed in the hands of ignorant and brutal officers. The Wreck of the Grosvenor' is said to have been a powerful factor in reforming the laws relating to the merchant seamen in Great Britain. Apart from its humanitarian motives, it is interesting for the excellent descriptions of wind and weather, and of situations with which the sailor has to deal.

Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1923. First Edition; numbered 107 of 300 copies printed. Hard Cover. Octavo. [1]-79, (1) pp. Bound as issued in publisher's cloth-backed boards; lacking title label; light fraying at the spine ends; corners and board edges rubbed; some light staining to the boards; offsetting to the endpapers; contents clean and binding sound; last leaf has a small triangular chip into the margin. A notable early work from one of the great American writers and issued like so many important literary works of that time from a small but significant American press in Paris. William Bird founded the Three Mountains Press in the 1920’s and worked closely with Robert McAlmon's Contact Editions not long after opening. Bird was responsible for publishing and/or printing numerous major literary works of the era including several works by Ezra Pound, Ford Madox Ford's “Women and Men,” Robert McAlmon's “Distinguished Air,” William's “The Great American Novel,” and perhaps most notably, Hemingway's second and defining work, “In Our Time.” In fact, Pound edited the series of six short prose works that included this present novel and Hemingway's, “In Our Time.” Pound solicited Williams's work for this series about which he wrote in a letter to Williams that the “point of the thing [would] lie in its being really interesting.” Williams's novel was that. While he later referred to it as a “satire on the novel form,” his bibliographer contended that “it could be described as an attempt to explore," using Williams's own word, “the background of American life” (Wallace 16). An important work in its own right, "The Great American Novel" is also rooted in the culture of expatriate artists that Gertrude Stein named the Lost Generation. Bird's Press was integrally connected to the burgeoning Modernist movement in Paris which would define a generation of writers and influence generations that followed. An important work signed by one of the great writers of the 20th century. Wallace A6. Signed by Williams on the front free endpaper.

The Ship that Sailed to Mars: a Fantasy.

London: George G. Harrap & Company Limited, [1923] - Quarto. Original quarter japon, gilt lettered and decorated spine, grey paper covered boards, title to front board in dark grey. A few light marks to covers, old faded staining at head of front cover, light bump to lower fore-corner. A very good copy. Title page and letterpress printed in blue & black, 48 mounted colour plates, and 48 mounted pages of letterpress. First edition, first impression. Born in Northumberland, Timlin (1892-1943) began his art training in the north east of England but completed it when his parents emigrated to South Africa, where he studied art and practised as an architect. The Ship That Sailed to Mars is his only published book, a fantastical illustrated gift book that rivalled those of Rackham, Dulac, Goble and Nielsen. The book was published in Britain by George Harrap, who had earlier published Willy Pogany, and they followed a similar format here, reproducing Timlin's original calligraphic text mounted, like the plates, on grey matte paper. "The most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s was William M. Timlin's masterpiece The Ship That Sailed to Mars. a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland" (Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration, 1991, pp. 102-03). Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, II p. 109 ("Fantasy with its roots in the fairy tale, describing the building of a space-flying sailing ship, its voyage to Mars and the monsters encountered en route This unique book, highly sought-after by collectors of fantasy, illustrated books and South Africana").

- Vgl. Giebisch/G. 174.
