Montagnes Russes. Traduit de l'Anglais par Ludmila Savitzky. Préface d'Edmond Jaloux.

Librairie Stock 1923 - FIRST EDITION, textblock browned, single instance of faint marginal marking (by Rageot, presumably) to Preface, a little creasing and flakiness to page corners, pp. xxviii, 209, foolscap 8vo, original wrappers, a little rubbed to extremities with some very light dustsoiling and a crease to top corner of front, vertical crease to backstrip with knock at head of same, good. Inscribed on the blank following the flyleaf for the French novelist Gaston Rageot, by both Rodker and Jaloux: the first offering 'hommmage de l'auteur', and the second 'avec mes meilleurs souvenirs'. An excellent presentation copy of the author's first novel, which failed to find a publisher in England but was enthusiastically taken up in France in this translation by Rodker's future mother-in-law. Jaloux's Preface identifies him as part of a 'nouvelle génération' alongside Clemence Dane, Virginia Woolf, Rebecca West, Katherine Mansfield, Wyndham Lewis, James Joyce, Dorothy Richardson, and David Garnett, and quotes two of his poems in full to demonstrate his literary pedigree.

        The Murder on the Links.

London: John Lane / The Bodley Head, 1923. Mystery novel. FIRST EDITION, octavo, pp.319; [1], blank. Printed on thick paper. Bound in a 'Times' or W.H.Smith' binding of brown cloth titled and trimmed in black. Some expected foxing to paperstock, text block a little toned to edges, some acceptable wear to joints. A very good copy in a contemporary cloth binding; whilst this is not the publisher's binding, it would seem preferable to a modern rebind. A baffling case for Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The third of Christie's 66 original crime novels, being the rarest title in first edition.

Almanakh Vezni: literaturen sbornik [Almanach of the journal “Scales”: a literary anthology].

Sofia: Vezni 1923 - Octavo (21 × 14.5 cm). Original printed wrappers with a constructivist vignette; 104, [16] pp. Five plates, one of which in color, and fifteen illustrations in the text. A very good, partly uncut and unopened copy, with very light fraying to wrapper edges. One of the few key publications by the Bulgarian avant-garde, the striking "Vezni" almanach contains translations of Richard Dehmel, Carl Einstein, Ilya Ehrenburg, and Vladimir Mayakovsky, as well as the Bulgarian Modernist writers Mutafov, Lamar, and Nikolai Rainov. The anthology also acquaints readers with major Western artists through reproductions of works by Chagall (in color), Klee, Kokoschka, Masereel and others. Among the Bulgarian Modernist artists whose illustrations are included are Ivan Milev and Sirak Skitnik. The editor, Geo Milev (1895–1925), was an important Bulgarian literary critic and expressionist poet who began his career as a translator and popularizer of Western poets and philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He became a leading propagandist of modernist and avant-garde tendencies in Bulgaria and edited the eponymous avant-garde and modernist journal, which appeared from 1919 to 1921. By the early 1920s, his own work became increasingly political and in 1924 he began publishing the leftist journal "Plamak" (The Flame). Milev began to provoke scrutiny by the authorities and was evidently killed during an interrogation after the bombing of a Sofia cathedral by communists. “Published the year of the September uprising and the ensuing suppression to which Geo Milev and Yasenov were to fall prey in 1925, the almanac and its cover design of geometric abstraction clearly demonstrates the proximity of Milev's circle to the constructivist aesthetics of the Russian revolution. Four tiny drawings by Mircho Kachoulev representing the four seasons must also be mentioned. The appendix contains a listing of international magazines of the avant-garde, i.e. ‘Ca Ira’, ‘Der Sturm’, ‘De Stijl’, ‘Zenit’, ‘MA’ and ‘Little Review’" (Jacono 2013, p. 24). Jacono 14. Binding a little used, small stain at head of spine, scattered foxing. Coloured frontispiece, 100 black and white plates from photographs, sketch maps in the text. First edition. Wild had been with Scott on the Discovery, was with Mawson in 1911–14, "and was a close friend of Shackleton on both the Nimrod expedition of 1907-09 and second-in-command on the Transantarctic Expedition of 1917-17. Wild joined Shackleton on his final voyage to the Antarctic in 1921-23 but the explorer's death sapped Wild's desire to continue" (Howgego). A "handsome publication" reproducing "the last photographs of Shackleton to be taken" (Taurus). Wild emigrated to South Africa, and drifted into bankruptcy and alcoholism. He died destitute in Johannesburg in 1939. Howgego III, S25; Taurus 112. [Attributes: First Edition]

A group of his works presented by him to actress Margot Collis (Marguerite Ruddock)]: Essays; Autobiographies; Plays; Collected Poems; Later Poems; Plays and Controversies.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited 1923-34 - Together 6 works, octavo. Original green or red cloth, titles to spine gilt, pages untrimmed. Light rubbing to ends of spines, corners gently bumped, some sunning to spines, a few works with soiling and markings to spine and boards, 5 inner hinges cracked, Collected Poems with bumping to upper board edge, occasional spotting. Overall a very good group of first and early editions. Presentation copies to his lover Margot Collis, inscribed by Yeats "To Margot from her friend W B Yeats Oct 1934" on the front free endpaper or half-title in four works. Plays in Prose and Verse contains two authorial annotations, signed by Yeats with his initials, one to the beginning of the play Deirdre ("I have crossed out a number of needless lines in the opening of the play. WBY"); another at the end of The Player Queen: "I have altered the end. As last played in Dublin Decima put on a mask left behind by the players [and] makes them dance. They have shed their animal forms. She throws them money - if I remember rightly - her ambiguous words are a farewell to all this she has loved. They get banishment but with great rewards. WBY." Later Poems, uninscribed, has Collis's pencil ownership inscription dated 20 September 1930 and so was hers before she met Yeats. Plays and Controversies is also uninscribed. Margot Collis was the stage name used by the Irish actress Marguerite Ruddock (1907-1951). Her intense relationship with Yeats started in the year these books were presented. Collis was also a poet and Yeats is said to have helped edit her works; he included some of her work in his edition of the Oxford Book of Modern Verse (1936). At the time of her relationship with Yeats, Collis was married to actor Raymond Lovell. She fell passionately in love with Yeats, though he remained married to Georgie. The relationship unravelled and Collis became unstable, offering Yeats the inspiration for his poem "A Crazed Girl". Their correspondence was later published under the title Ah, Sweet Dancer (1970). The works are in various editions: Plays and Controversies (1923) and Essays (1924) are first editions; Autobiographies (1926) is the first collected edition; Collected Poems (1934) is second impression; Plays in Prose and Verse (Dec. 1931) is fourth impression; and Later Poems (Mar. 1926) is also fourth impression. Laid-in is a 4-page autograph letter signed "BM" (unidentified; on 25 Burton Court SW3 letterhead) advising the unnamed recipient (probably Yeats) on the writing of a play and the portrayal of characters.         Verspreide geschriften.

Bonn, Leipzig, Kurt Schroeder, Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1923-1927.6 volumes in 7. Original half cloth (5) and wrappers (2).Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) was a famous Dutch scholar of Oriental cultures and languages and Advisor on Native Affairs to the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. 'He knew more about Islam than the best-informed Muslim and more about colonial government than the Colonial Office itself, and many an opponent was antagonised or even silenced by his vitrolic criticism'.With Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) a new chapter begins in Dutch Islam scholarship in general and the study of Indonesian Islam in particular. .. In spite of all the criticism, no one intending to seriously study Islam in Indonesia will be able to avoid reading Snouck Hurgronje's work and consulting them again and again' (Boland-Farjon, Islam in Indonesia, p.16-17). The collected works is an authorised edition with corrections by the author. It includes all his publications until 1927 with the exception of his largest monographs.

Autograph postcard signed to Otto Hahn

Utrecht, 1923. Meitner, Lise (1878-1968). Autograph picture postcard signed, in German, to Otto Hahn (1879-1968). Utrecht, 14 September 1923 (postmarked the next day). 89 x 138 mm. One corner a bit bent, but very good. A fascinating postcard documenting not only the decades-long friendship and research collaboration between Meitner and Hahn, co-discoverers of nuclear fission, but also Meitner’s friendship with Einstein and the important Dutch physicist Paul Ehrenfest with whom she had been friends since her student days. [I have just traveled here from Leiden and am sitting in the railway station, for the first time without accompanying protection. In Leiden Einstein, with whom I spent two wonderful days in Ehrenfest’s house, escorted me to the train. I must leave from here at 4 o’clock. I will most probably return on Sunday morning; on the evening of the 16th I must [. . .] in Einthoven, where I am going tomorrow. I hope you are all well. Many hearty greetings, your Lise M. Greetings also to the Institute youth.] Meinter wrote the postcard during her first visit to the Netherlands, a lecture tour arranged by her friend Dirk Coster, professor of physics at the University of Groningen. Coster would later play a critical role in Meitner’s life: In 1938 he persuaded her to leave Nazi Germany to avoid persecution as a Jew, and accompanied her during her the first leg of her escape, from Germany to the Netherlands. Meitner obtained her doctorate in physics from the University of Vienna in 1905, where she became friends with her fellow student Paul Ehrenfest. In 1907 Max Planck invited her to Berlin to continue her post-doctoral studies; there she met radio-chemist Otto Hahn, who would be her research partner for the next thirty years, and also made the acquaintance of Einstein. During those early years in Berlin, before the outbreak of World War I, Einstein, Ehrenfest, Meitner and others would often gather at Planck’s home for long evenings of music and conversation. In 1912 Hahn and Meitner joined the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin (Meitner as an unpaid â€
