An uncommon title, and more so with Dixon's inscription. Dixon's only foray into poetry along with his distinctive drawings. An early, and scarce, Grabhorn Press item. "Bound in coarse tan linen with decorations hand-painted in orange on front and back covers. Some copies in tan boards lettered in black on front cover and on back." (Grabhorn 52).

Sewing slightly loose and prints with minor age-toning. Prints in overall very good+ condition. Arno Nadel (1878-1943) was Jewish a poet, musician, and artist born in Vilnius, Lithuania. At the age of 17 he moved to Berlin and enrolled in the College for Science of Judaism (Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums). Nadel worked as an educator and choirmaster. He became the choir director of the Jewish community in Berlin supervising the music at all Berlin synagogues. Nadel published poetry, plays, and worked on an anthology of synagogue music which he finished in 1938 and intended to publish in seven volumes. Nadel died in the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1943.

The great opera soprano (1882 - 1963) responds:"… You have asked me to choose what I believe are the ten musical masterpieces.It is an impossible question for no matter what ten one chooses it is easy to name another ten equally good.The fact is that there are vastly more than ten musical masterpieces, none of which can be called the 'greatest musical masterpiece' for there are so many forms of writing -- Symphony, Oratorio, Opera,Sonata,Nocturne, Waltz,Etude,Concerto and so on almost ad infinitum that a 'masterpiece'can only be designated as a 'masterpiece' in its idiom.However Ishall try.Among Symphonies Ishould choose Beethoven's 5th.Of the violin concertos the Brahms D major says the most to me although it does not speak so familiarly the language of the violin as do some of the more showy 'bravura' types written with the virtuoso in mind.The literature for the piano is so rich that Ishall not even attempt tosingle out a 'masterpiece'. One thinks of severalBeethoven Sonatas,the two Chopin Sonatas, as well as his Ballads,Etudes,Nocturnes,Waltzes-all'masterpieces.' The same is true of some of the Schubert,Hugo Wolf,Brahma and Schumann songs.Iam unable to give an unprejudiced opinion as to the'greatest opera;'like the fly on the oil painting I am too close tosee the whole picture.       Berlin: Der Malik-Verlag. Good. 1923. First Edition. Softcover. Tan pictorial wrapper. Yap edges are bumped, wrappers are lightly soiled. Binding remains tight with mostly clean interior. Fore edge of book is lightly soiled. In modern clamshell box. Published in several variations, this issue contains 100 plates with 84 in black and white and 16 in color. Published in January of 1923, though many of the original drawings were completed some years before. The folio depicts a decrepit Berlin, its sole inhabitants the lecherous and begrimed, middle-aged, middle-class society whose grotesque lives spill wantonly from boudoirs and bar rooms into the city streets. George Grosz was an influential German artist known for caricatural drawings and paintings and was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity group during the Weimar Republic. Grosz fled his homeland in 1933 and emigrated to the United States becoming a naturalized citizen in 1938. Included is the 1981 Castle Books re-print. ; Color and B/W Lithographs; Folio 13" - 23" tall .

Unique binding in the style of Pierre Legrain: full red morocco with onlays of two deeper shades of red morocco in wave pattern narrowing on spine and expanding at edges of front and back covers, author and title in gilt on spine, pastepaper guards, original yellow wrappers with original woodengraving in bordeaux and black of Eiffel Tower bound in, binding somewhat worn and scuffed at spine ends with split starting at lower front hinge. Although the binding is not signed, the style is similar to that of Pierre Legrain. Printed by Imprimerie Louis Kaldor.

        John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1923 - 1923 Original Hardback Wisden.

      1923. This lot is an 1923 Original Hardback Wisden. In just Good Condition. The main issue being the front board. This book is good, it has had no restoration, the front board is very badly marked but has nice shiny, original gilt, nicee spine cloth with good lettering (not too faded) and a couple of thin line marks , good rear board with small lines. Inside the hinges are very good and the pastedowns very yellow, minor marks, with a lovely photoplate.

Erschienen im Euphorion Verlag, Berlin. - Der deutsche Künstler Rudolf Schlichter gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Neuen Sachlichkeit. Schlichter studierte an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart und an der Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe, u. a. bei Wilhelm Trübner und Hans Thoma. Schlichter unternahm mehrfach Studienreisen nach Italien und Frankreich und bekam durch seinen Malerkollegen Julius Kasper Kontakt zur Unterwelt. In Karlsruhe gehörte er zu den Mitbegründern der Gruppe Rih, übersiedelte dann nach Berlin, wo er sich der Novembergruppe, der Berliner Secession, den Berliner Dadaisten und der KPD anschloss. In den frühen 20er Jahren erschienen viele Buchillustrationen Schlichters. Sein Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis reichte von Bertolt Brecht, Sternberg, Alfred Döblin und Grosz bis hin zu Carl Zuckmayer, den er schon in Karlsruhe kennengelernt hatte. 1925 waren Werke Schlichters in der Ausstellung Neue Sachlichkeit in Mannheim zu sehen. Zwei Jahre später lernte er seine spätere Frau Elfriede Elisabeth Koehler, kennen und begann sich von der Politik abzukehren und dem Katholizismus zuzuwenden. Zu seinen Bekannten zählten nun Ernst von Salomon und die Brüder Ernst Jünger und Friedrich Georg Jünger. Unter den Nationalsozialisten wurden viele seiner Werke aus Museen entfernt und Schlichter wurde mit einem Arbeitsverbot belegt. Im Jahr 1939 zog Schlichter nach München, wo er unter anderem Kontakt zu Hans Scholl hatte, und sich der katholischen Zeitschrift Hochland anschloss. 1942 wurde Schlichter ausgebombt und verlor dabei einen Teil seiner Werke. Nach dem Krieg nahm er an der Ersten Deutschen Kunstausstellung in Dresden teil und gründete in München die Neue Gruppe. Gelegentlich arbeitete er für die satirische Zeitschrift Der Simpl. Sein Schaffen wandte sich jetzt dem Surrealismus zu. Rudolf Schlichter trat 1950 dem wiedergegründeten Deutschen Künstlerbund bei. - Minimal gebräunt und im Unterrand minimal wellig.         Japanese beetle hunter Hudson Maxim warns of invasion

      [New Jersey], c. 1923. 8.5" x 11". "Seven typed single sided sheets, 8.5"" x 11"", circa 1923, boldly signed by Hudson Maxim on the final page as ""Hudson Maxim"". Undated (but accompanied by a photostat letter dated March 12th, 1923 which references his manuscript). Expected folds with a small staple hole upper left corner. Lightly toned, else near fine.Hudson was a U.S. inventor and chemist who invented a variety of explosives, including smokeless gunpowder, Thomas Edison referred to him as ""the most versatile man in America"". His manuscript first prepares the reader as if Japan is preparing to invade the US and says what our natural response would be; however it then segways into the fact that it is actually a non human invasion. ""America is already invaded right here in New Jersey and the conquest of America has already begun. We cannot console ourselves that our Japanese enemy is not a human enemy for an invading army of real Japanese soldiers, even a million of them, would be a less menace … If we were invaded by a real Japanese army, we might rise up and expel the invaders, or, failing in that, we might purchase our freedom with a heavy indemnity … The Japanese beetle if the most all-devouring, the most universally destructive insect pest in the world.""However it is perhaps his illuminating analysis, one which can be applied to most all invasions, or diseases affecting humans or plants (think Eboli), or even terrorism, natural preventable disasters, or even the man made destruction of our planet's delicate balance and resources, which all drive home the need for a quick response before things get out of control. In sum, he cites the following example of what happens when things are allowed to develop without checks and balances (think metaphorically):""The infestation of the Japanese beetle started in 1916 at Cinnaminson, Burlington County, New Jersey. Less than a square mile was infested the first year, when with the expenditure of but a few dollars the pest could have been easily entirely destroyed. The next year only 2.7 square miles were infested and $100,000 would then have cleaned it up the insect. Even the next year, when only 6.7 square miles were infested, a quarter of a million dollars would have exterminated the pest, yet nothing adequate was done, and the next 48 square miles were infested. In 1920, one hundred and three square miles were infested; in 1921 two hundred and seventy and in 1922, seven hundred and seventy-three. It would now probably cost from ten to fifteen millions of dollars to exterminate the pest, to say nothing of the necessary destruction of every growing plant over the infested area. Every automobile and other vehicle passing into and out of the infested areas would need to be rigidly and thoroughly inspected in order to prevent the beetle from being carried into uninfested territory. From Ten to Fifteen million dollars is certainly a lot of money, but if the beetle is allowed to spread over the territory of the United States -- and it will spread over the entire territory wihtin a few years if not prevented -- it will cost the people of the country more than two BILLION dollars a year …"" A fantastic manuscript with a fascinating introspective on the mathematical progression of a single ripple of water initially created by a tiny pebble (in this case the Japanese beetle) and the vast impact it will have on the planet. And a wonderful signed manuscript by ""the most versatile man in America"""

Thomas, including full page and within the text illustrations. A beautifully decorated book in the Persian style. Text and illustrations within decorative borders, full page designs. The eastern narrative was adapted as a film in 1919, even before being published as novel. It will be published again in 1927 with the title "La Sultane de l'Amour". Very rare, precious book in perfect conditions and partially uncut.

THE HEART OF THE NATION. This Aero View of Washington is the most remarkable map picture that has ever been made. Remarkable for its great range of vision and the stupendous task in making such a drawing and the extreme accuracy in the architectural "lay-out." It shows the city in perspective from a point of vantage east of the Congressional Library looking northwest, thus including the most attractive suburbs with the Capitol in the foreground. This work occupied two years of continuous time of the greatest Bird's-Eye View artist in the country. No map view of this vast and comprehensive nature has ever been made of any City and it is especially a great accomplishment when it is considered that Washington's immense area of public buildings, parks and suburbs is here shown in a picture from which anyone may become familiar with locations of the streets, business blocks and public buildings. Even though it has a "Bird's-Eye View" effect, it has all been sketched from the ground and every block and building is in proper survey."         Almanakh Vezni: literaturen sbornik [Almanach of the journal "Scales": a literary anthology]

      Vezni, Sofia 1923 - Octavo (21 × 14.5 cm). Original printed wrappers with a constructivist vignette; 104, [16] pp. Five plates, one of which in color, and fifteen illustrations in the text. A very good, partly uncut and unopened copy, with very light fraying to wrapper edges. One of the few key publications by the Bulgarian avant-garde, the striking "Vezni" almanach contains translations of Richard Dehmel, Carl Einstein, Ilya Ehrenburg, and Vladimir Mayakovsky, as well as the Bulgarian Modernist writers Mutafov, Lamar, and Nikolai Rainov. The anthology also acquaints readers with major Western artists through reproductions of works by Chagall (in color), Klee, Kokoschka, Masereel and others. Among the Bulgarian Modernist artists whose illustrations are included are Ivan Milev and Sirak Skitnik. The editor, Geo Milev (1895-1925), was an important Bulgarian literary critic and expressionist poet who began his career as a translator and popularizer of Western poets and philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He became a leading propagandist of modernist and avant-garde tendencies in Bulgaria and edited the eponymous avant-garde and modernist journal, which appeared from 1919 to 1921. By the early 1920s, his own work became increasingly political and in 1924 he began publishing the leftist journal "Plamak" (Flame). Milev began to provoke scrutiny by the authorities and was evidently killed during an interrogation after the bombing of a Sofia cathedral by communists. "Published the year of the September uprising and the ensuing suppression to which Geo Milev and Yasenov were to fall prey in 1925, the almanac and its cover design of geometric abstraction clearly demonstrates the proximity of Milev's circle to the constructivist aesthetics of the Russian revolution. Four tiny drawings by Mircho Kachoulev representing the four seasons must also be mentioned. The appendix contains a listing of international magazines of the avant-garde, i.e. 'Ca Ira', 'Der Sturm', 'De Stijl', 'Zenit', 'MA' and 'Little Review'" (Jacono 2013, p. 24). Jacono 14. A stunning theatre and music play with original colour woodcuts by one of the leading Yugoslavian Avant-garde and Constructivist artist August Cernigoj, made for Slavic cultural circle on the Fascist occupied territory. This unique theatre play, which was meant to be accompanied with music, and illustrated with stunning wood-cuts, was made entirely in a Slavic cultural circle on the Fascist occupied territory of Gorizia and Trieste, by the associations of teachers, one of them being the author of this book Josip Ribicic (1886-1969). Ribicic was a teacher and one of the most famous authors of children’s books in Yugoslavia, especially before the WWII, when he was active in Slovenian language on the Italian occupied territory. After WWII he dedicated himself to children’s magazines, short stories and recording reminiscences of children, who actively participated in WW II. The dedication note on the first page was made by his wife Roza Ribicic, a teacher in Slovenian school in Trieste and a public figure. In 1925, after the pressure of the Fascists became stronger, the family moved to Rakek in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, just on the other side of the Italian border. The stunning wood-cuts, including the highly decorative wrappers, printed from eight impressions of the same wood-block, were made by a Slovenian Constructivist artist August Cernigoj, who was one of the most famous Yugoslavian artists from the period. Born in Trieste in a Slovenian family, he was influenced by the Avant-garde very early. He was a great admirer of Kandinsky and der Blaue Reiter group, for which he travelled to Munich in 1922. A year later he spent a semester at Bauhaus, studying in Kandinsky's class. The illustrations in this book show a strong influence of modern art, such as der Blaue Reiter, which influenced Cernigoj's work in the 1920s. The composer of accompanied music was Marijo Kogoj, one of the main names of Yugoslavian classical music of the 1920s. He was school by Arnold Schönberg and Franz Schreker, but was active mostly in Slavic circles in Trieste and Grado, at the time under Fascist occupation. This second part was published independently, as a separate story after the first part V kraljestvu palckov, published a year before.

Art Deco legend George Barbier contributed fashion plates to several albums and almanacs starting in 1912 before finally starting his own publication in 1922 titled Falbalas et Fanfreluches. Each annual issue included an almanac for the year, a guest essay, and twelve bright pochoir plates. Not all of the plates are traditional fashion plates; Barbier chose to include many fantastical renderings of period and foreign costumes and folk dress, presented in his usual elegant style. Falbalas et Fanfreluches was issued from 1922 through 1926, making this the second of five total issues. This 1923 edition includes "Modes" by Colette, as well as a color-illustrated title page and an additional black & white headpiece. Near fine, loose as issued in a chemise, illustrated with a trio of women surrounded by feathers and pearls, and original glassine. (Colas 1026).

      - Porträt des Inhabers, ordnungsgemäß gestempelt usw, beiliegend die Promotions-Anzeige von 1930 zum Doktor der Staatswissenschaften. - Vor allem aber 18 Seiten Auflistung zu den besuchten Vorlesungen, damals war mit Originalunterschrift vom Dozenten der Besuch der Vorlesungen zu bestätigen (Der Dozent bestätigt eigenhändig:) - Daher Originalunterschriften von Moritz Schlick (Friedrich Albert Moritz Schlick, geb. 14. April 1882 in Berlin; gest. 22. Juni 1936 in Wien, Physiker und Philosoph. Begründer und einer der führenden Köpfe des Wiener Kreises im Logischen Empirismus. Seine Beiträge im Rahmen einer wissenschaftlichen Philosophie reichen von der Naturphilosophie und Erkenntnislehre bis zur Ethik und Ästhetik. - 1922 übernahm er als Nachfolger Ernst Machs den Lehrstuhl für Naturphilosophie an der Universität Wien. Der dort 1924 von ihm gegründete interdisziplinäre Diskussionszirkel ist als der Wiener Kreis in die Philosophiegeschichte eingegangen. Daneben engagierte sich Moritz Schlick in der Volksbildung, u.a. in der Ethischen Gesellschaft und im Verein Ernst Mach. Ab 1926 stand Schlick in Kontakt mit Ludwig Wittgenstein, der ihn maßgeblich beeinflusste, - von 1929 bis 1932 diskutierte Schlick regelmäßig mit ihm. 1929 lehnte Schlick eine Berufung nach Bonn ab und wirkte in den folgenden Jahren auch als Gastprofessor (in Stanford und Berkeley, California). Seit 1929 gab er außerdem die Reihe Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung heraus. Nach der Machtergreifung des Austrofaschismus in Österreich 1934 blieb Moritz Schlick an der Universität Wien. - Am 22. Juni 1936 wurde Schlick auf der sogenannten Philosophenstiege im Gebäude der Wiener Universität von seinem ehemaligen Studenten Hans Nelböck, der 1931 bei ihm promoviert hatte, erschossen. Dieser hatte bereits zuvor begonnen, seinen Doktorvater zu terrorisieren, und Schlick zweimal gedroht, ihn zu ermorden. Schlick hatte sich jeweils mit einer polizeilichen Anzeige gewehrt.
