Vezni. Literaturno-hudozhestveno spisanie. Godina III, 1921/22, broy 1-20 [Scales. Magazine for literature and art. Year III, 1921/22, Nos 1-20]

Vezni publishing house 1921 - Complete 3th year of Vezni, Nos 1-20 in 19 issues, all of them uncut. 356 p.; Nos 1-10 125/165 mm, Nos 11-20 135/175 mm. A collector's set. See the picture of one unfolded copy, all issues are in the same quality - just folded, no brackets (except Nos 3, 6, 7 which has nailed with one bracket each), no glue; some minors stains and yellowed outlines; paper stays fragile; slightly rounded corners; one worn edge - No 17/18 (see partially unfolded on the photo); one ink stain at the down-right corner of No 16; missing small part from the front of No 1; very good to near fine, regarding the cheap paper. Even in the second book of "Scales" (Nos. 2, September 30, 1919) Geo Milev publishes the manifesto "Directions and goals" (p. 17), through it stated mission of "Scales" and the way in which the magazine will be moving in Bulgarian name of avant-garde culture. The idea of Geo Milev is to create a modern European magazine, a proud successor of Bulgarian magazines such as "Thought" and "Artist". The newspaper published not only works of Bulgarian authors, but also translated works from English, German, French. Starts mainly in the field of symbolism in the second and third anniversary already passed the ideas of expressionism, whose chief representative in our literature is the editor - Geo Milev. Here as he says in the manifesto of the second number: ¿It should reach the coast of art - fine art. Bulgarian literature must go out by itself - out of the tradition, of national, contemporary and popular. (.) Because comes era of full unification in art: this is the most important process in the history of modern art. Bulgarian art Bulgarian literature should not, and can not, remain an exception - it must unify itself with other literatures - should reach other literatures. It means to leave the tradition of national, contemporary and popular - cease to be a bit literature. To this target aspirations of a group of Bulgarian writers who gray rumor of epithets called "modernists". To this must be directed aspirations of Bulgarian writer, otherwise it will remain backward - a past lifetime¿. Unfortunately this third (unfinished) year becomes the last for this remarkable Bulgarian magazine. See Domenico Jacono "Bulgarian modernism, books and magazines 1919-1934" cat. No. 1, p. 11. In this case the pictures were made in no good enough lighting and they are just near, but doesn't shows real color. Except the picture of No. 1. Broadside, measuring 29 by 41 inches, closely framed. $6000.Very large original movie poster produced for the 1921 re-release of D.W. Griffith's pioneering film, The Birth of a Nation.Griffith's dramatization of the American Civil War and Reconstruction, based on Thomas Dixon's 1905 novel The Clansmen, was immediately controversial for its racist depiction of African Americans and its heroic portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan; it is now considered instrumental in the revival of the KKK in the 1920s. The poster, composed entirely of text in red and black within a black border, reads: ""The Supreme Picture / Of All Time! / Birth / Of A / Nation / D.W. Griffith's / 8th Wonder of the World / 18,000 People / 3,000 Horses / 3 Years to Produce!""         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1921 - 1921 Original Hardback Wisden, Special Presentation Wisden.

1921. Hi, This lot is a 1921 Original Hardback Wisden This year is one of the rarest Hardbacks I find and very under rated in the rarity stakes , this is rare but only in just Good Condition, but very nicely priced. The boards are quite dark and marked , the spine cloth is also a bit dark and the gilt is a touch darkened , the front gilt is bright. Internally the pastedowns follow the dark theme and the hinges are weak but not broken some mesh can be seen between page 2 and 3. Some pencil markings inside. One thing that is special is that to the title page it states ""To C Stewart Caine from Sydney Pardon"" so the current editor to a future editor so this was once owned by an editor of Wisden. Nice inside. Excellent Photoplate and a unique Wisden but condition could be better.

THE HISTORY OF THE TENTH CAVALRY 1866-1921.

[Tucson: Acme Printing Company, 1921]., 1921. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Original black fabricoid, title in gilt on front cover, 141 [4] pp., dedication, foreword, introduction, preface, illustrated, plates, portraits. The Tenth Cavalry was organized in 1866 when Congress provided for black regiments in the reorganization bill of 1866. The Act of Increase and Fix the Military Peace Establishment of the United States provided "that to the six regiments of cavalry now in service, there shall be added four regiments, two of which shall be composed of colored men." These two became the Ninth and Tenth Regiments of Cavalry. Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson arrived at Fort Leavenworth to organize the regiment which at that time only existed on the statute books. Glass covers the organization and composition of the unit, its early field service, being Buffalo Soldiers in Arizona, and combat in Cuba and the Philippines. Also involved in the Punitive Expedition after Pancho Villa raided Columbus, New Mexico. Appendix A of this work provides the engagements of the regiment and brief extracts from the Regimental Returns. This regimental history is not widely known and is quite rare. Not in Eberstadt, Howes, Decker, etc. Only 100 copies were printed for friends and family. Interestingly, out of the numerous photographs in this book, only one depicts the "old-timers," which includes some black soldiers. Inked signatures and addresses of some of the unit's members are on the last blank pages, including Oscar Knox, to whom this copy belonged. Very good copy.

South with Scott. With Diagram and Three Maps.

London: W. Collins Sons and Co. 1921 - FIRST EDITION. Large octavo, pp. xiv; 284; 6. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with titles in red to spine, fore-edge and tail-edge deckled. The book shows very light rubbing, with dustiness to top edge, and light bumping to spine ends. Internally bright and clean throughout. An excellent copy of the scarce first edition of this title. Admiral Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, 1st Baron Mountevans of Chelsea, KCB DSO (known as 'Teddy' Evans), was a British naval officer and Antarctic explorer. He served as second officer of the Morning – the relief vessel of Scott's first Antarctic expedition in 1901-1904 – and as second-in-command on Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913. Consequently, Evans took on Captain Scott's position as leader after Scott's unfortunate death. South With Scott remains a popular text from the dramatic era of polar travel and discovery.         Selections From The Work of P.A. de Laszlo.

London: Hutchinson and co., n.d. [1921]. Signed Limited Edition. Folio. Bound in publisher's original quarter blue cloth over pale blue cloth boards, beveled edges with gilt ribbon motif to centre of front board, and gilt titles to spine; front and bottom edges uncut, blue and gilt marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 64 of his portaits in black and white photogravure. Dual language, French and English. With bookplate. In a limited edition of 300, this is number 1. Together with the author's signature to the limitation notice, and the author's bookplate opposite to half title, this is understood to be the author's own copy. Armorial bookplate, "Veritas Vincti Spes Mea In Deo", "P.A. Laszlo de Lombos, MVO". Binding is a little rubbed, bumping and some fraying to corners, bumping to spine ends, cloth is a little grubby. Internally clean, free from foxing, with some dampstaining throughout. The plates, and their labelled tissue guards, show well. De Laszlo was a significant, though now somewhat forgotten, portrait painter, perhaps one of the most significant of the late Victorian and early twentieth century periods. His subjects were typically aristocratic, or royal, or high ranking members of the Catholic church; this volume includes a representative sample, featuring the King Edward VII, Prince Chlodwig Hohenlohe-Schillingsfurst, and Pope Leo XIII - the last of which made his name in Europe. He lived and worked in Hungary for many years, though his fame spread across Europe, until the death of his young daugther in 1903 led him to move to London and become naturalized as a British citizen. In 1909, Edward VII made him a Member of the Royal Victorian Order. Despite this, he was interned during the First World War. Following Walter Sickert, de Laszlo was made President of the Royal Society of British Arists in 1930, demonstrating the esteem in which his work was held.

        [Four Autograph Letters, Signed]

Lake Hill, NY, 1921. Twelve pages, densely written in ink, on four folded quarto lettersheets. Professionally silked, otherwise very good. To editor Periton Maxwell, at the time evidently associated with LESLIE'S MAGAZINE, two signed in full, two signed simply "Richard," relating to publishing and personal matters and forwarding manuscript submissions (not present). A sampling of the correspondence reads as follows: "Thank you for the copies of Judge, which reached me this morning ... I hope, by the way, that in sending you the stories enclosed herein [not present] (The Girl With the Brown-Paper Parcel & The Soul of the Apple) that you will not feel that I am snowing you under with MS. I am sending them because of a prospectus from Leslie's which I rec'd a short time ago ....''; "You will have seen the recent statement of a school-master that the boy's mind is a 'pig-sty,' only to be kept in order by severe discipline in Latin & Greek. The enclosed lines are by way of rebuttal on behalf of the school-boy ....''; and "Here I am once more wallowing innocently with the bears--& this is just a line to thank you for the friendly way you helped me, during my little emergency ... I know you'll be glad to hear that I am to get my hundred a week from Block, had no difficulty at all about it ....'' Accompanied by a copy of the uncommon pamphlet, AN OPEN LETTER FROM RICHARD LE GALLIENNE TO LAURENCE J. GOMME RELATING TO THE LITTLE BOOK-SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (New York, 1915, printed at the Village Press). The pamphlet has also been silked, over some earlier pencil annotations on the title-panel (Cary 111).

        Modes et Manieres d'Aujourd'hui

1921. First Edition . Signed. MARTY, André AND BERNARD, Tristan. Modes et Manières d’Aujourd’hui. Huitième Année. 1919. (Paris): Collection Pierre Corrard, (1921). Folio, original half ivory and decorative paper boards, plates loose as issued, original cloth ties. Housed in a custom slipcase. $9500.Limited first edition of Modes et Manières d’Aujourd’hui, Volume VIII for the year 1919, number 4 of only 12 copies issued on Japon (of 300 copies), featuring 12 loose pochoir color plates, accompanying suite of 12 uncolored plates, and original matted watercolor signed by French artist Andre Edouard Marty, the leading Art Deco artist whose work, like that of Barbier and others, “made fashion the art of the day instead of art being the fashion” (Metropolitan Museum of Art), with 12 leaves of accompanying text in French by popular playwright and novelist Tristan Bernard, rarely found complete in the original portfolio. This original limited edition portfolio highlights the splendid Art Deco artistry of Andre Edouard Marty, who shared with Georges Barbier, Charles Martin and others a love of “elegance and luxe… They fused their styles from a heady mix: Japanese woodblock prints, classical Greek and Roman art, modern stage and costume design, and the cinema… The result of this alchemy was a new way of illustrating the figure” (Torre, 20th-Century Fashion Illustration, 33). “As Vogue reported in the June 15, 1914 issue, these ‘young men of birth and Beaux Arts training… made fashion the art of the day instead of art being the fashion… artistic modernism provided a crucial link between haute couture and high culture” (Metropolitan Museum of Art). Marty, also well known for his theatre posters, was one of an elite group of only four artists who contributed yearly to Gazette du Bon Ton (1912-25) and his images were regularly featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Modes et Manières d’Aujord’hui and other publications. This rare complete Volume VIII of Modes et Manières d’Aujourd’hui, for the year 1919, in the original portfolio, additionally contains 12 corresponding short works by noted French author Tristan Bernard, each printed in green and black on an individual leaf, loose as issued.         Trembling of a Leaf

1921. MAUGHAM, W. Somerset. The Trembling of a Leaf. London: William Heinemann, (1921). Small octavo, original dark blue cloth gilt, original dust jacket. $3800.Scarce first English edition, one of only 3000 copies, of Maugham’s collection of “little Stories of the South Sea Islands,” including his famous, frequently adapted story, “Rain.” A beautiful copy.Maugham's collection of tales set in Hawaii, Samoa and Tahiti ""established him as a short story writer… [In the book he] filed the patent on a certain kind of story, set in the tropics and usually describing the undoing of the characters because they have failed to understand their surroundings. The collection included his most famous story, 'Rain'… Critics agreed that here was something they had not seen before. The Bookman in November said the stories were 'as savage and gripping as some of the paintings by Goya.' The Saturday Review… said that 'each tale is begun by inspiration and completed by artistic perfection'… James Michener wrote in 1952 that 'one of the evil limitations put upon anyone who wants to write about the South Pacific is that he must stop reading Maugham… At the same time I must admit that before I start to do any writing about this vast area I usually take down 'Rain' and reread those first three paragraphs to remind myself of how completely one can set a physical stage in a few absolutely correct observations'"" (Morgan, 256-58). ""Rain,"" Maugham's celebrated story of a missionary's attempts to convert the prostitute Sadie Thompson, has been adapted to film numerous times—a 1928 silent movie starring Gloria Swanson and Lionel Barrymore; a 1932 film starring Joan Crawford and Walter Huston; and a 3-D feature in 1953 starring Rita Hayworth and José Ferrer—and was the basis of a 1944 stage play, Sadie Thompson. Publisher's 10-page catalogue at rear. Published October 6, 1921, less than a month after the first edition in New York (September 17).         Autograph letter signed ‘E Rutherford’ to Charles Herman Viol, 8 January 1921. Three pages on two sheets.

      - Important letter from Rutherford to Charles Herman Viol requesting information about the production of radium, in preparation for a series of lectures he was to deliver at The Royal Institution. "From 1921, when he succeeded [J. J.] Thomson, until his death, Rutherford was professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution in London, a post that entailed several lectures each year" (DSB). Rutherford (1871-1937) had moved in 1919 from Manchester to Cambridge, where he was director of the Cavendish Laboratory. There he continued his research on radioactivity, mainly in collaboration with James Chadwick, work which depended on a steady supply of radioactive materials. Since 1913 Viol had been director of research at the US Standard Chemical Company, the first successful large-scale producer of radium, and editor of its in-house journal Radium. He was thus in an excellent position to respond to Rutherford’s request. Rutherford letters with significant scientific content are rare on the market. The letter reads, in full: Dear Dr ViolI am giving a course of lectures on Radioactivity at the Royal Institution beginning late in February. I shall be obliged if you can give me any general information with regard to the following: 1. Average Ur plus Th content of the carnotite used for separation of Ra. 2. A rough idea of methods of commercial separation with rough figures of amount of ore, acid, etc. to yield one gram Ra. Probably you have published something along these lines. Possibly you could give me some idea of the annual output of Ra for the world & an estimate of the amount so far separated. If it is not too much trouble, I should be glad of rough figures of this kind to introduce in one of my lectures. Also I should be glad of any general information re commercial separation that you may have on hand & do not regard as confidential. I am always interested to receive your publication Radium which I read with interest. Yours sincerely, E Rutherford"Viol had been trained as a physicist and had studied under eminent physicists such as Albert Michelson and Robert Millikan at the University of Chicago. His advisor was the chemist Herbert McCoy, known for his study of radioelements. In 1914 Viol had just completed his dissertation on the chemical properties and relative activities of the radio-products of thorium. To a young, promising scientist, the Standard Chemical Company offered the chance to enter a rapidly developing industry and become its pioneer. Viol was among those who improved the method for recovering radium from carnotite ore and foresaw several possible uses for radium salts . "Radium was a monthly publication devoted to "the chemistry, physics, and therapeutics of radium and radioactive substances". It was published by the Radium Publishing Company, yet another of the Standard Chemical Company’s subsidiaries. The idea of printing a house journal was mainly based on its French counterpart Le Radium (1904)." The Standard Chemical Company’s commercial interests in radium were principally its medical applications. Viol intended Radium "to legitimize the Standard Chemical Company within the community of American physicians and use it as a marketing tool for the company’s products. His co-editor was William Cameron, a medical doctor who was the rst in the United States to report treatment in a patient with breast cancer using massive doses of the material" (Maria Rentetzi, ‘The U.S. Radium Industry: Industrial In-house Research and the Commercialization of Science,’ Minerva 46 (2008), pp. 437-62). The Standard Chemical Company reached the apogee of its fame in May 1921, when Marie Curie, the discoverer of radium, visited the United States. One week after her arrival, President Harding presented her with a gift of one gram of the rare element, prepared by Company. It was at her personal request that a visit to the Standard Chemical Company’s facilities was included in her busy schedule. Three pages on two sheets, 177 x 1

Jahrhunderts". Die Bände "Der Prozeß" und "Das Schloß" unbeschnitten und Rücken etwas ausgeblichen. (8 pp;. 17x22cm) We have given these documents to Michael Holland, researcher and professor of French literature at St Hugh's College, Oxford, author of several works on Maurice Blanchot Before that say: Essays on Blanchot appeared in 2015 at Hermann. His detailed analysis is forthcoming in Cahiers Maurice Blanchot under the direction of Danielle Cohen-Levinas. We use excerpts from this study to present these previously unknown and unpublished documents. The discretion of Blanchot on his youth and the almost total lack of biographical material forced the few biographers Blanchot many assumptions about the path of the most secret writer of the twentieth century. The school report and other documents in this set and can trace the tuition Blanchot.Holland notes that there "until 1921 Blanchot continued his studies at home, under the guidance of his father, Isidore, literature teacher who offered private lessons to children from wealthier families. [...] The small collection of "Satisfaction Testimonials" and "Honor Citations" signed "Professor / I. Blanchot" are precious and touching record of these years. »Blanchot then made "studies for three years at the College of Chalon-sur-Saône Boys [...] [and] has passed its trough in 1924 and not in 1922 [...] He chose the training provided by Section B (live Latin-Languages) [...] He chose to complete his studies in philosophy class.A school report covering the three years of schooling in Chalon has a very detailed picture of the young student. After a year in which the Second Progress "Good or Very Good student" to "excellent student" can be clearly observed in some subjects [...] Only downside to this brilliant picture: the disease. [...] It is noted that it is the first course that seem to have been affected by this episode. »in the light of these, Michael Holland puts next "Blanchot's career and that of Jean-Paul Sartre, Henri IV to Louis-le-Grand finally came to Ulm Street ENS 1924. Even golf champion, same rewards and same honors, each is an outstanding student. And it is found in Imagination Sartre published in 1936 but began during its preparation Psychology Certificate 1927, the same interest in the ideas of Ribot who sprinkles his essays. [...]Four essays psychology, a philosophy and literature offer valuable insight into what the young Blanchot was able during the year that he was preparing his bachelor's degree. By his comments on the sidelines of essays from Blanchot his philosophy teacher, Mr. Bochot shows that he knew he was dealing with an exceptional mind, sometimes unruly but capable of analysis and critical acute. »Michael Holland then provides a detailed analysis of the various work of Blanchot, including correlated with the writings of Ribot, highlighting the knowledge and early critical young Blanchot. It also notes in these early works the premises of a thought that soon will mark the literary critic of the twentieth century. Here are some excerpts of his work, giving an overview of the quality and interest of the student dissertations Blanchot:"This essay follows closely the argument of the article" The emotional logic "of Th. Ribot published in the Philosophical Magazine in 1904.""The more daring is the claim that the affective similarity is also the basis of some associations of states of consciousness. The "emotional tone" brought by the joy, sadness becomes a center of attention grouping of states of consciousness without rational relationship between them, a pivot around which agitate unexpected groupings. It is the artist who is the first recipient of this analogy sensations that brings such a man born blind to explain the Scarlet comparing it to the sound of a trumpet (eg which originated in Locke and is regularly quoted in the nineteenth century). Rejecting embryological and anatomical explanations for these associations Blanchot says that "the psychological explanation seems the only good", adding: "This way to feel a bit special is not, however, the privilege of a few eccentric or imbalanced, not to mention the fantastic designs or even surprising sentiments expressed some symbolist and decadent, we find even among the people, and perhaps especially among the people, that singular sensibility others cultivate and refine, as a precious rarity " . »"Having concluded that in many cases the cause of our associations is the emotional disposition and not elsewhere, Blanchot goes further: the emotional tone that accompanies associated performances can also strengthen their relationship. Here Blanchot brings in its reasoning author close but different from both Th Ribot. American philosopher William James. ""From here, the idea of" emotional affinity "that connects what comes to mind our current arrangements inspired Blanchot examples more personal (" When we are sad ... The happy man today ... tomorrow ... my enthusiasm bankruptcy of my happiness ") .."Blanchot disputes the Ribot drawing on his personal experience considered equal to everyone. »"Here, as in essays devoted to Th. Ribot there is dissatisfaction Blanchot before the established dualisms, attention to identify a third position that complicates relations. Here it is with the work of Edmond Goblot (1858-1935) Blanchot continued his analysis. »"When studying in La Fontaine's fable, Blanchot says," we must be placed at two points of view. " "Why is this option?" meets his teacher. In literature as philosophy, we can see, the same concern to go beyond simple outlook characterizes the approach of the young student. »"It is in relation to that company as" the old storyteller gauloiseries has remained himself. " From there to suggest that such an example has inspired the novelist Blanchot who will work a few years later, there is only one step. But to understand the young nationalist who will soon (if not already) forge commitments we continue to blame him, it should be noted that what makes La Fontaine really a French poet, is to be "The only perhaps in his time who saw through our forests poor woodcutter all covered with branches," the only one to have found a way under "cold and shiny shell of the words" to trouble the heart by show. In short - and this is evident in all the essays of this period - the concern that animates the young Blanchot, and inspire her pronouncements he will regret later, is deeply human. His teacher asks: "Why do you sacrifice lyricism?". This is because now, for Blanchot, writing is out of the prescribed frameworks, whether moral or aesthetic, and get in front of the crisis, in the 1920s, began to make man the The challenge of complex and formidable powers. »More than relics of his childhood, these documents are a valuable record of the education and training of one of the best minds of our time. The covers and each page are illustrated in full color, and the endpapers feature a repeating design of Mampampe's face.         A Book for Kids.

Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1921. Quarto, colour frontispiece and title, numerous illustrations in the text; original decorated boards, cloth spine. Scarce first edition: the only children's book from the pen of iconic poet and Aussie larrikin C. J. Dennis. This is an interesting association copy inscribed by the publisher George Robertson to Captain Arthur W. Jose. Loosely tipped in is a doggerel note from "P.R." (possibly the author P.R. Stephensen) thanking the owner for loaning the book, and lamenting the difficulty of earning a quid by writing rhymes for children.A Book for Kids comprises playful verse and rhyme with two short stories, respectively titled 'The Little Red House' and 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset'. It is a fresh and sometimes eccentric production, enhanced by the author's simple yet confident line drawings. The striking cover illustration was also created by Dennis.'C.J. Dennis' one lasting contribution to children's literature was A Book for Kids, which, with its entertaining prose, rollicking verse and the author's own naïve but charming drawings, had enjoyed constant popularity ever since its first appearance in 1921' (McVitty, Authors and Illustrators of Australian Children's Books p. 57).The two short stories offer an innovative contrast to the literary conventions of the time, and appeal directly to the imagination of younger readers. Of 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset' Saxby writes 'Dennis avoids the error of trying to moralize or teach a lesson from nature, and captures the imaginative feeling of a child caught up in the clouds and absorbed into the sunset'. Hinges repaired; some wear to boards, including scuffing at edges of front board, a few marks, but in good condition for this title.
