My First Seventy-six Years: The Autobiography of Hjalmar Schacht

London: Allan Wingate. Hardcover. 552 pages. Index. Black and white photographic plates. Signed and inscribed by author upon front free endpaper. "One of the most important autobiographies of the post-war period, for there can be few personalities still alive who have been so intimately connected with the march of world events for so many years... His first great triumph was to rescue the German Mark from the inflation of 1921... As the Nazi avalanche swelled, Hitler persuaded him to occupy the Presidential chair at the Reichsbank... but (Schacht) soon saw that the Fuhrer was driving relentlessly towards war. A quarrel resulted and he left the Government, remaining under a cloud until he was arrested towards the close of the regime." - from dust jacket. Moderate wear to book. Binding intact. Above-average wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. As the world again faces the spectre of hyperinflation this copy should prove a sound investment. . Good. 1955.         English Homes

London: Country Life & George Newnes, Ltd.,, 1921–37. Norman and Plantagenent; Medieval and Early Early Tudor; Early Tudor; Late Tudor and Early Stuart, 2 volumes; Late Stuart; Sir John Vanbrugh and his School; Early Georgian; Late Georgian. 9 volumes, folio. Original blue buckram-backed mid-blue cloth, title gilt to spines and upper boards, gilt rule to the spine edges, all edges gilt apart from volumes I & II, volume II which is entirely ungilded, blue marbled endpapers. With the dust jackets. Frontispiece to each volume and all copiously illustrated throughout. The jackets a little tanned at the spines and with some minor chipping, creasing and a few edge-splits, but overall this is a wonderfully preserved set. First editions, first impressions save for volume II of periods I and II, Mediaeval & Early Tudor - which was published out of sequence in 1936, this an early impression dated 1937. Remains a foundation text for the study of English English domestic architecture. In reviewing the issue of volume I, Architecture ("The Professional Architectural Monthly") commented on the scope and ambitions of the series; "This volume forms, it might be said, the undercroft on which the upper stories of English architectural development are reared. In it are laid the bases of the evolutionary history of house-planning, designing, and decorating in the land throughout all succeeding phases of both Gothic and Renaissance styles. But while the main purpose is architectural, here as throughout the series, the human element is kept well to the fore by narration of the home and public life of the owners of the various castles and manor-houses that are carefully described and profusely illustrated" (July, 1921) H. Avray Tipping (1855–1933 originally wrote for The Garden - he was a garden designer in the Arts and Crafts style being a friend of Gertrude Jekyll and Harold Peto - but when that journal was absorbed into Country Life in 1905 he became one of its principle writers. In 1907 he became the Architectural Editor, a post he held more or less continually until 1930. Tipping is widely recognised as one of the leading figures in the development of the study of the evolution of English architecture. His co-author on the Vanbrugh volume, Christopher Hussey, was the son of a friend, who Tipping encouraged to go up to Oxford, and then employed on the staff at Country Life, "during the next fifty years he contributed nearly 1400 signed articles, as well as being editor from 1933 to 1940" (ODNB). In his Obituary in the Garden History Society's newsletter - he too was a keen gardener and wrote extensively on historic gardens - Arthur Hellyer described his writing as setting "a new standard in erudition combined with readability." Hussey was the author of a three volume study of Georgian Country Houses, long held to be the standard work. A highly desirable set of this important publication.

        Europe's Morning After

Harper and Brothers New York (1921) - First Edition. Author's extremely uncommon first book. "Roberts went to see how poor old Europe looks and feels today. He tells you about Poland, the short and long Poles, and the barber Poles - the tragedy too. In Hungary he found why Hungarians are the best little one hundred per cent haters of Austrians. In Italy he saw the Italian striking as usual, playing morra as usual, and kissing and making up as usual - and Italy's struggle to come back. Through Europe Roberts went, watching the innocent little fights and rows which the Peace Conference started so that people would not get tired of war too quickly". "Reading" with vignette on title in orange and green, two plates in the same colors, one facsimile of writing in text, device on final page, stylized illustration of a tree on front and rear endpapers; "Berneval" with woodcuts of Naples and Paris printed in blue on the front and rear endpapers, two-color title page woodcut, one plate and a facsimile of a Wilde letter, and printer's woodcut device; our special deluxe version WITH THREE ADDITIONAL WOODCUTS at the back of each volume, all the woodcuts as well as the cover design by Randolph Schwabe. Ransom, p. 211; Tomkinson, p. 17. "Berneval" spine just a bit darkened, otherwise FINE, UNWORN COPIES that have obviously been little used, as they open stiffly and are immaculate inside and out. Here, "After Berneval" is offered with "After Reading," its (earlier) companion volume, both of them in their deluxe form on Japanese vellum and including an extra suite of the illustrations. "Reading" comprises a set of letters, also written to Ross, by Wilde during the summer of 1897, after having just been released from two years' imprisonment in Reading Gaol. The preface to its sequel, "After Berneval," says that the earlier collection "was unprocurable almost as soon as it was published." The letters in these volumes tell the story of a tragic literary figure who fell from a precipitous height. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was born and raised in Ireland, studied classics at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Magdalen College, Oxford, and then settled in London. There he became famous for his unmatched wit and infamous for his personal eccentricities--long hair, décor at his lodgings that included peacock feathers and blue china, and, ultimately, sexual behavior that was deemed both intolerable and criminal. During the first half of the 1890s, he was enjoying remarkable social prominence and literary success with the staging of "Lady Windermere's Fan" (1892), "A Woman of No Importance" (1893), "An Ideal Husband" (1894), and the incomparable "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1895). But two months after the staging of this last play, he brought a defamation suit against the Marquess of Queensbury, the father of his intimate friend, Lord Alfred Douglas. The suit backfired: in the course of the litigation, Wilde was investigated by police, and his homosexuality was exposed, leaving his reputation destroyed. He was sentenced in May of 1895 to two years of hard labor, spending part of his time behind bars at Reading Prison, where he produced his powerful poem, "De Profundis." After release, he moved to the Continent and died three years later in Paris of meningitis. As Day says, "Among English men of letters only Byron and Shaw have surpassed Wilde in the craft of conscious posing and self-publicizing," a fact that has made succeeding generations suspicious of the reality behind the legend that the author helped to establish. But after a period when he was treated as a kind of martyr because of his suffering at the hands of squeamish Victorianism, "it is at last possible to evaluate Wilde as the capable literary artist he acutally was.
