Some minor rubbing to black and white illustration on front panel, endpapers browned, some offsetting from woodcuts to text page opposite as usual (and even so noted in Kunitz & Haycraft, p. 1549), else fine, housed in brick-colored cloth with brown morocco spine clamshell box. Illustrated with four original woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. Hand set and letterpress printed by McDermott at The Prompt Press, Richmond. A lovely fresh copy.& Virginia Woolf (1882- 1941), English novelist, essayist and critic, married the political theorist Leonard Woolf in 1912, with whom she established the Hogarth Press. MONDAY OR TUESDAY was the first Hogarth Press title to be included in the Annals of English Literature, 1475-1950. It was Woolf&#39;s "break out" book and it was noted that with this collection of short stories, Mrs. Woolf "emerged definitely with the liveliest imagination and most delicate style of her time." Vanessa Bell (1879-1961), elder sister of Virginia Woolf, was herself a talented artist. She designed a number of dust jackets for books published by her sister&#39;s press, as well as illustrating the books. In her art, she attempted to break the bonds of restrictive Victorian norms. She, and the other members of the Bloomsbury group, made significant efforts to introduce the French avant-garde to an English audience.         Original Sketch of "Woman and Fawn"

      c. 1921. In the 1920s, E.E. Cummings was a regular contributor of both writing and artwork to The Dial magazine, which was the preeminent Modernist journal of its time, publishing such writers as Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Cocteau, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ford Madox Ford and such artists as Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky. Cummings was only 25 years old when his first pieces were accepted for The Dial and, notably, it was the only place where his poems and his artwork were published side by side on a regular basis. The January, 1921 issue had four drawings and a poem ("Puella Mea") by Cummings: this is Cummings&#39; original sketch for one of those drawings, perhaps the most well-known of them, of a fawn on its hind legs, next to a nude woman, beneath a tree. This sketch was used as his pencil transfer, and as such is drawn on both sides of the paper. The final product, which was ink and graphite on paper, is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a bequest of Scofield Thayer, Cummings&#39; friend and mentor and the editor of The Dial. This sketch is on 8-3/8" x 10-7/8" paper, with a 5" x 9" pencil border. Stained and chipped, mostly in the right margin; very good. With a Gotham Book Mart exhibit number (#245) in the upper left hand corner, where a chip is pending. A copy of The Dial, Vol. LXX, No 1 [NY: Dial, 1921], with the published drawing is included and is near fine with a small spine nick and the usual wear to the yapped edges. An iconic image in its very first incarnation. .

        The Secret Agent. Drama in Four Acts

      Canterbury (England): Printed for the Author by H. J. Goulden, Ltd, 1921. Quarto. iii, 69pp. First edition. One of 52 or 53 copies. Written in 1920, this is Conrad&#146;s own adaptation for the stage of the novel published in 1907. This edition in wrappers was followed in 1923 by an edition of 1000 in boards. The production, performed in London in the fall of 1922, was not a success. Conrad wrote of the critics: &#147;I was amused by their touching anonymity in damning the play. It was like a chorus of parrots.&#148; A fine copy of a scarce and fragile Conrad publication in printed wrappers.

First English Edition; preceded by the New York edition, which Shaw condemned for its numerous misprints. 8vo., 267 pp. Publisher&#39;s gilt- stamped light mossy green cloth. A significant presentation copy inscribed in black fountain pen on the half-title: "To Robert Loraine / from G. Bernard Shaw. / 16th June 1921". Loraine [1876-1935] was a man of action: actor-manager, soldier, aviator, Fabian & of course, a close friend to Shaw - perhaps best known as an actor he&#39;s see most commonly on holiday with the Shaw&#146;s & Harley Granville-Barker or at Fabian events. Loraine & Shaw shared political affiliations & a passion for theatre: it was Loraine who premiered as the lead in the Man & Superman on Broadway, the production was massively successful & launched Shaw as a force to be reckoned with in the States. A very good or better example in like dustwrapper that has had one tear on the upper spine archivally repaired along with several small chips at the corners. A very nice copy. First edition, first impression. With the author&#39;s signed presentation inscription to the half title page, "to Sidney & Beatrice Webb from G.B.S. 16th June, 1921". An association of great significance. The Webbs were, together with Shaw, the leading lights of the Fabian Society. They had met in the 1870s and remained friends and political allies for more than half a century.

      Macmillan and Co. London. 1921. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION. 4to. (8.9 x 7.1 inches). Issued as a de luxe, large paper limited edition, signed by the Author beneath the limitation notice, one year after the smaller first edition of the book. A fine, bright, unread copy internally with some gatherings still unopened. Publishers original burgundy cloth spine with gilt lettering. The cloth is a little faded but the gilt still very bright. Veluscent paper on boards with gilt stamp facsimile of the author signature to the front board. Some minor rubbing to the edges and toning of the boards but still generally a very good copy of this uncommon edition.

        THE WANDERINGS OF A SPIRITUALIST: Signed with Three Autograph Letters

      New York: George H. Doran Company, (1921). First American Edition. Hardcover. Some rubbing to the cloth of the Doyle book with a little fraying to one spine edge. The letter on White Star Line stationery is a little wrinkled and soiled and has a vertical crease. The other two letters are Fine. Original green cloth; illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in full on the title page by the creator of Sherlock Holmes to Arthur Edward Stilwell, one of America's last empire builders of the gilded age: "Yours in the great cause of Spirit-/Arthur Conan Doyle,/May, 31/22." Laid down on the front free endpaper is a card from the Ambassador Hotel in New York on which Doyle has written a short letter of about 40 words arranging a meeting with Stilwell and SIGNED "Hurriedly,/A Conan Doyle." Laid in are 2 further AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED (ALSs) by Doyle to Stilwell, both SIGNED as "A Conan Doyle." In a letter on both sides of a note card of the White Star Line dated June 29 Doyle writes: "I have read your book 'THE LIGHT.' It is a very level & workmanlike production, with no high lights, but never sinking below a good quality. I agree with your publishers that it would be better not to allude to the Brownies.... I hope some path may open up for your Spiritual labours. I have written about you in my little book ... I have left nothing undone to smooth your way." The other letter is on one side of stationery from a telegraph office near Doyle's home. Doyle begins by telling Stilwell that "I am full of sympathy but it is simply impossible for me to fall into your Brownie scheme." Doyle then goes on to describe his itinerary for a tour of America. He also mentions fellow spiritualist Rev. Vale Owen and tells Stilwell that he has mentioned him to Lloyd George. Also included is a Third Edition of Stilwell's book UNIVERSAL PEACE--WAR IS MESMERISM,1911. Arthur Edward Stilwell was the founder of Port Arthur, Texas, and the Kansas City Southern Railway. Stilwell claimed to be guided by spirits--which he called "Brownies"--in many of his decisions. According to SYBIL LEEK'S BOOK OF THE CURIOUS AND THE OCCULT, "Several times he escaped death by following his intuition. He was spiritually informed that he should build a railroad line south from Kansas City to Galveston on the Gulf of Mexico. At a point twenty-nine miles from Galveston, Stilwell's 'guide' told him to stop work and that the railroad must not go to Galveston or it would mean his personal ruin and death to thousands. He had a vision of a prosperous city struck down by a tidal wave and destroyed. There were angry protests from his investors when he announced his change of plan, but Stilwell followed his voices. He directed the route toward a comparatively little known spot on the coast, now Port Arthur. Four days after the completion of the railroad terminating in Port Arthur, a mammoth tidal wave swept along the coast of Texas and practically destroyed Galveston, reducing it to a shambles of death and destruction. Port Arthur escaped and became the center for the relief work for the stricken city. Stillwell became known as Lucky Stilwell, as his visions were corroborated a dozen times by actual events. He wrote books about his experiences and in 1910 predicted World War I, the collapse of the Russian aristocracy, and the restoration of Palestine to the Jews." Stilwell's luck apparently ran out as a company he organized to build a railroad connecting Kansas City with the Pacific Ocean was forced into receivership in March 1912. Ironically, oil was discovered under its tracks and was to contribute to the fortune of its receiver William T. Kemper. Stilwell died of apoplexy on 26 September 1928. His distraught wife, Jennie, committed suicide by jumping out the window of their New York apartment thirteen days later. The Stilwells were said to have left an estate of only a thousand dollars.

Dated November 24, 1921. & & An interesting letter in which Busoni discusses his forthcoming tour, mentions [?Gabriel] Pierné, the performance of various works, etc. "&#133; today I decided and I have accepted a tour in England. It will be over at the end of February and I will be able to return by way of Paris and team up with Pierné for a Mozart concerto (if he wishes!)" & & Busoni goes on to write of a concert of music for two pianos that he performed with his "great student [Egon] Petri: Mozart sonata, improvisation on Bach, duettino concertante, a contrapuntal fantasy for 2 pianos (the latest form of the work). I would like to repeat it in Paris. And again!" & & Somewhat worn, foxed, and creased; small tears to right edge; slightly split at central fold; ca. 50mm. split to blank lower right corner. . "Much to his detriment as composer and aesthetician, [Busoni] was lionized as a keyboard virtuoso. The focus of his interests as a performer lay in Bach, Mozart and Liszt, while he deplored Wagner. Rejecting atonality and advocating in its place a Janus-faced &#39;Junge Klassizität&#39;, he anticipated many later developments in the 20th century. His interests ranged from Amerindian folk music and Gregorian chant to new scales and microtones, from Cervantes and E.T.A. Hoffmann to Proust and Rilke. Only gradually, during the final decades of the 20th century, has his significance as a creative artist become fully apparent." Antony Beaumont in Grove online& & Petri (1881-1962), a noted German-born pianist, was intimately associated with Busoni. Active in the USA from the time of his American debut in 1932, he went on to teach at both Cornell University and Mills College. "From 1901, when he joined Busoni&#39;s masterclass at Weimar, the piano became his chosen instrument. Busoni took a deep interest in his development and later described him as being his &#145;most genuine pupil&#146;. Petri corrected the manuscripts of Busoni&#39;s operas and piano works, and also collaborated with him in editing Bach&#39;s keyboard works..."& & "... Although a large-scale player in the Busoni mould, Petri&#39;s playing differed in many respects to that of his teacher. He was considerably more dutiful in regard to both correct style and adherence to the printed text. In contrast to the tonal richness of Busoni&#39;s playing, Petri&#39;s piano sound frequently had a rough edge to it. His playing was noted for a massiveness of conception and for its dedicated interpretative insight. Particularly admired in Bach, Beethoven and Liszt, Petri was also a staunch advocate of his mentor&#39;s compositions, a number of which he recorded."       New York: Boni and Liveright, 1921. First edition. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing in the Publisher&#39;s original paper-covered boards (light handling soil, spine head pushed, light edge wear, small cracks to paper at top leading corner of the front board and bottom leading corner of the rear board, lacking the scarce dust jacket), SIGNED BY EUGENE O&#39;NEILL on the half-title; a book containing 3 of Eugene O&#39;Neill&#39;s plays, including his breakthrough Play, "The Emperor Jones", which received great critical acclaim, was his first major box office success, and launched his career. First staged on November 1, 1920, the play features Brutus Jones, an African-American who, after being imprisoned for murder, escapes from prison and goes to a Caribbean island where he declares himself to be Emperor. After its opening at the Playwright&#39;s Theatre in New York, the work met with such success that it was relocated to a larger locale and then, after finishing its run on Broadway, went on a nationwide tour. The Play&#39;s London production, staged in 1924 and starring Paul Robeson as Brutus Jones, earned Robeson excellent reviews and helped ignite his career, leading in no small measure to his casting in the London production of "Show Boat". O&#39;Neill&#39;s works tend to feature tragedy and pessimism, reflecting his own life. (His Father, Mother, and brother all died within a 3-year period. His two sons, Eugene, Jr. -- an alcoholic, and Shane -- a heroin addict, each committed suicide, and O&#39;Neill disowned his only daughter, Oona when, at age 18, she married Charlie Chaplin, then 54.) Thrice married, O&#39;Neill divorced twice and his third wife became addicted to potassium bromide, which addiction destroyed any marital bliss they had. O&#39;Neill himself suffered from alcoholism and depression. Dying in a Sheraton Hotel in Boston, O&#39;Neill&#39;s last words were said to be: "I knew it. I knew it. Born in a hotel room, and God damn it, died in a hotel room." O&#39;Neill was remarkably successful for a man of his nature and life experience, winning 3 Pulitzer Prizes: 1920 for "Beyond the Horizon", 1921 for "Anna Christie", and 1928 for "Strange Interlude", and the 1936 Nobel Prize in Literature for "the power, honesty and deep-felt emotions of his dramatic works, which embody an original concept of tragedy". As no nominees for the 1936 Prize were deemed worthy of it, the Nobel Committee, as it was then, but is no longer, permitted by its Statutes, elected to reserve the Prize and to select a winner in 1937. O&#39;Neill then was awarded the 1936 Prize, which was presented to him in 1937. A 775-copy signed limited edition of "The Emperor Jones" (without the other two plays) was published in 1928 and is readily obtainable, while signed copies of the Play&#39;s true first edition, offered here, are remarkably scarce. A Very Good copy of Eugene O&#39;Neill&#39;s breakthrough Play, SIGNED BY EUGENE O&#39;NEILL. QUITE SCARCE.

      London: The Hogarth Press, 1921 First edition, one of 1,000 copies. White paper boards with woodcut by Vanessa Bell and brown cloth spine. With 4 woodcuts by Bell. This copy being that of Roger Senhouse, bearing his ownership signature, bookplate, and a small piece of paper with notes in his hand regarding the printing of Monday or Tuesday. About near fine, with light rubbing to boards, offsetting to endpapers and a few spots of foxing. Roger Senhouse was a publisher at Secker and Warburg and member of the Bloomsbury Group. Senhouse noted in pencil on front free endpaper: 1000 copies / "The Prompt Press". Indeed, the Woolfs had this work printed by F. T. McDermott of the Prompt Press in Richmond. Kirkpatrick notes that McDermott gave Leonard printing advice during the infancy of the Hogarth Press. However, notes in Senhouse&#146;s hand on a small piece of paper laid in to this copy tell Leonard&#146;s story from a different angle. First Photoplay Edition for the 1921 British silent film adaptation directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Lewis Gilbert and Eille Norwood (the latter played Sherlock Holmes in 47 silent films). Frontispiece and four non-movie illustrations by Sidney Paget. The ORIGINAL DUST JACKET has a compelling artistic cover which enacts a scene from the film and beneath which a blurb reads: "THIS IS A SCENE FROM THE F.B.O PHOTOPLAY OF THE STORY." (We can&#39;t locate F. B. O. films in our research nor can we find any evidence that the film itself survived.) In Very Good condition without any prior ownership marks (cloth a little worn at the extremities, some minor wrinkling, some little white specks) in an unrestored and unclipped original dust jacket which has noticeable chipping at the spine tip, some very light water-staining, a quarter-dollar sized chip on the back panel, some overall wear to the panels and folds. Yet, all faults noted, the DJ is complete in the sense that no words or pertinent images have been lost to the chips and creases and the book still claims eye appeal. The rarest Sherlock Holmes related photoplay known to us. . First Edition Thus. Very Good/Good.

        Original Sketch of "Woman and Fawn"

      c. 1921 - In the 1920s, E.E. Cummings was a regular contributor of both writing and artwork to The Dial magazine, which was the preeminent Modernist journal of its time, publishing such writers as Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Cocteau, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ford Madox Ford and such artists as Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky. Cummings was only 25 years old when his first pieces were accepted for The Dial and, notably, it was the only place where his poems and his artwork were published side by side on a regular basis. The January, 1921 issue had four drawings and a poem ("Puella Mea") by Cummings: this is Cummings' original sketch for one of those drawings, perhaps the most well-known of them, of a fawn on its hind legs, next to a nude woman, beneath a tree. This sketch was used as his pencil transfer, and as such is drawn on both sides of the paper. The final product, which was ink and graphite on paper, is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a bequest of Scofield Thayer, Cummings' friend and mentor and the editor of The Dial. This sketch is on 8-3/8" x 10-7/8" paper, with a 5" x 9" pencil border. Stained and chipped, mostly in the right margin; very good. With a Gotham Book Mart exhibit number (#245) in the upper left hand corner, where a chip is pending. A copy of The Dial, Vol. LXX, No 1 [NY: Dial, 1921], with the published drawing is included and is near fine with a small spine nick and the usual wear to the yapped edges. An iconic image in its very first incarnation.

The covers and each page are illustrated in full color, and the endpapers feature a repeating design of Mampampe&#146;s face. The story is reminiscent of Little Black Sambo, and the characters are drawn using stereotypical racist caricatures similar to Sambo&#146;s controversial illustrations. Some wear to extremities, and spine shows some light soiling, else fine in pictorial paper boards.

Cummings was a regular contributor of both writing and artwork to The Dial magazine, which was the preeminent Modernist journal of its time, publishing such writers as Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Cocteau, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ford Madox Ford and such artists as Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky. Cummings was only 25 years old when his first pieces were accepted for The Dial and, notably, it was the only place where his poems and his artwork were published side by side on a regular basis. The January, 1921 issue had four drawings and a poem ("Puella Mea") by Cummings: this is Cummings' original sketch for one of those drawings, perhaps the most well-known of them, of a fawn on its hind legs, next to a nude woman, beneath a tree. This sketch was used as his pencil transfer, and as such is drawn on both sides of the paper. The final product, which was ink and graphite on paper, is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a bequest of Scofield Thayer, Cummings' friend and mentor and the editor of The Dial. This sketch is on 8-3/8" x 10-7/8" paper, with a 5" x 9" pencil border. Stained and chipped, mostly in the right margin; very good. With a Gotham Book Mart exhibit number (#245) in the upper left hand corner, where a chip is pending. A copy of The Dial, Vol. LXX, No 1 [NY: Dial, 1921], with the published drawing is included and is near fine with a small spine nick and the usual wear to the yapped edges.
