        A Book for Kids

Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1921. Quarto, colour frontispiece and title, numerous illustrations in the text; original decorated boards, cloth spine with hinges repaired; some wear to boards, including scuffing at edges of front board, a few marks, but in good condition for this title. Scarce first edition: the only children's book from the pen of iconic poet and Aussie larrikin C. J. Dennis. This is an interesting association copy inscribed by the publisher George Robertson to Captain Arthur W. Jose. Loosely tipped in is a doggerel note from "P.R." (possibly the author P.R. Stephensen) thanking the owner for loaning the book, and lamenting the difficulty of earning a quid by writing rhymes for children. A Book for Kids comprises playful verse and rhyme with two short stories, respectively titled 'The Little Red House' and 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset'. It is a fresh and sometimes eccentric production, enhanced by the author's simple yet confident line drawings. The striking cover illustration was also created by Dennis. 'C.J. Dennis' one lasting contribution to children's literature was A Book for Kids, which, with its entertaining prose, rollicking verse and the author's own naïve but charming drawings, had enjoyed constant popularity ever since its first appearance in 1921' (McVitty, Authors and Illustrators of Australian Children's Books p. 57). The two short stories offer an innovative contrast to the literary conventions of the time, and appeal directly to the imagination of younger readers. Of 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset' Saxby writes 'Dennis avoids the error of trying to moralize or teach a lesson from nature, and captures the imaginative feeling of a child caught up in the clouds and absorbed into the sunset'.

Autograph letter signed to an unidentified male correspondent (possibly the noted teacher and pianist Isidore Philipp)

1 page. Quarto. Dated November 24, 1921. An interesting letter in which Busoni discusses his forthcoming tour, mentions [?Gabriel] Pierné, the performance of various works, etc. "… today I decided and I have accepted a tour in England. It will be over at the end of February and I will be able to return by way of Paris and team up with Pierné for a Mozart concerto (if he wishes!)" Busoni goes on to write of a concert of music for two pianos that he performed with his "great student [Egon] Petri: Mozart sonata, improvisation on Bach, duettino concertante, a contrapuntal fantasy for 2 pianos (the latest form of the work). I would like to repeat it in Paris. And again!" Somewhat worn, foxed, and creased; small tears to right edge; slightly split at central fold; ca. 50mm. split to blank lower right corner. . "Much to his detriment as composer and aesthetician, [Busoni] was lionized as a keyboard virtuoso. The focus of his interests as a performer lay in Bach, Mozart and Liszt, while he deplored Wagner. Rejecting atonality and advocating in its place a Janus-faced 'Junge Klassizität', he anticipated many later developments in the 20th century. His interests ranged from Amerindian folk music and Gregorian chant to new scales and microtones, from Cervantes and E.T.A. Hoffmann to Proust and Rilke. Only gradually, during the final decades of the 20th century, has his significance as a creative artist become fully apparent." Antony Beaumont in Grove online Petri (1881-1962), a noted German-born pianist, was intimately associated with Busoni. Active in the USA from the time of his American debut in 1932, he went on to teach at both Cornell University and Mills College. "From 1901, when he joined Busoni's masterclass at Weimar, the piano became his chosen instrument. Busoni took a deep interest in his development and later described him as being his ‘most genuine pupil’. Petri corrected the manuscripts of Busoni's operas and piano works, and also collaborated with him in editing Bach's keyboard works..." "... Although a large-scale player in the Busoni mould, Petri's playing differed in many respects to that of his teacher. He was considerably more dutiful in regard to both correct style and adherence to the printed text. In contrast to the tonal richness of Busoni's playing, Petri's piano sound frequently had a rough edge to it. His playing was noted for a massiveness of conception and for its dedicated interpretative insight. Particularly admired in Bach, Beethoven and Liszt, Petri was also a staunch advocate of his mentor's compositions, a number of which he recorded." James Methuen Campbell in Grove online Busoni's possible correspondent, Isidore Philippe (1863-1958), was a renowned teacher, at the Paris Conservatoire from 1903-1934, the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau from 1921-1933, privately in Paris until 1940, and in New York from 1941-1956.

        THE SISTER'S TRAGEDY [wrapper title]

9, Longwall, Oxford. [dated at end 7 October 1921].. 9, Longwall, Oxford. [dated at end 7 October 1921].. [1],20 leaves. Quarto. Mechanically duplicated typescript, printed on rectos only, cord bound in typed wrappers. Wrappers rather spotted and chipped, internally very good. An early acting script of the author's first published play, with the above address on the upper wrapper and title leaf in ink, in his hand, and with at least one correction and one revision in ink in the text. The play was first performed privately at John Masefield's house on 24 January 1922, with the first public performance following in May. Comparison with the published text (Blackwell, 1922, following the public performance) reveals forthcoming tinkerings with stage mechanics, and the addition of at least one line of dialogue, at the end.

[SCRAPBOOK OF A PROFESSIONAL MINIATURE PAINTER AND PORTRAITIST]

[Los Angeles, New York, etc.], [ca. 1921-50] . [Los Angeles, New York, etc.], [ca. 1921-50]& . Near Fine. Pictorial cloth-bound album. Folio. 13 1/4” x 13 1/4”. Approximately 55 pages on about 30 leaves (plus a number remaining blank). A few elements apparently missing, some items loose and laid-in. Else generally fine. Fascinating and informative scrapbook of a noted miniature painter, Berta Carew. Includes letters and invitations from curators, notices of acceptance, programs from various shows/exhibits, award certificates, newspaper and catalog clippings relating to exhibitions (many reproducing her contributions), etc. Of special note are the more than forty commercial photographs (both mounted and loose) Ms. Carew had taken of her miniatures (in addition to the roughly equal number reproduced in the aforementioned clippings and programs). These professional photos (all black-and-white) provide a sharp, detailed close-up of each miniature, and in many cases the artist has additionally noted the title and buyer. Ms. Carew was something of a socialite judging by correspondence and addresses, but evidently took her career as a miniature painter quite seriously. She was a member of the British Academy of Arts and the American Society of Miniature Painters. She exhibited perhaps most prominently at the Met's 1950 show “Four Centuries of Miniature Painting” (program laid in). In effect, a personally assembled catalogue raisonné.

        HELOISE AND ABELARD

New York: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only by Boni and Liveright, 1921.. New York: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only by Boni and Liveright, 1921.. Two volumes. large octavo. Publisher's parchment and paper over boards, leather labels. Spines rather rubbed and darkened, labels worn, some foxing throughout volume one, small tear at top edge of pp. 101-110 in volume two, otherwise a good set in a half-morocco folding box. First U.S. limited edition. One of 1250 sets, this one unnumbered. With marks, revisions and annotations (in pencil and ink) in the text and margins of 41 pages of the first volume. The pencil annotations are in an unidentified hand (but see below); the ink revisions, deletions and corrections are by Moore, and are, in many instances, written over the penciled emendations. In addition, on pp. 51 and 69, sections of the text are crossed out, and typescript revisions are mounted onto the margin beneath. Loosely- inserted in the first volume is a typed letter, signed (one page, quarto, 121, Ebury Street, London, 2 June 1922) from Moore to "My dear MacColl," concerning the possibility of revising the book: "I shall be very glad to hear if you have finished reading 'Heloise and Abelard.' I hope you have not made many corrections on the margin, for I cannot rewrite the book. All I can do is to avail myself of your taste in correcting a few expressions that are not part of the key that I have chosen to write in..." Letter a bit soiled and worn, creased at center fold, torn at upper edge. The recipient of Moore's letter (and perhaps the reader responsible for the pencil annotations in the first volume), may have been Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1948); English painter and art critic. He served as keeper of the Tate Gallery from 1906-1911 and keeper of the Wallace Collection 1911-1924. He and Moore had known each other since at least the 1890s when the two men were concurrently art critics, the former for The Spectator, the latter for The Speaker. MacColl and Moore ". . . together may be said to have conducted the propaganda of the 'nineties for the work of the French Impressionists in England." See Joseph Hone, THE LIFE OF GEORGE MOORE, New York, 1936, p.178). GILCHER A40b.
