The antiquary Sir Guy Francis Laking (1875-1919) grew up under the shadow of royalty, with his father serving as physician to Queen Victoria and her two successors, and studied antiques and art from an early age. Initially an art advisor at Christie's, Laking became internationally recognized as a leading expert on arms and armour while still a young man, and in 1900 was appointed honourary inspector of the armouries at the Wallace Collection, then recently bequeathed to the nation. DREISER, Theodore
Los Angeles, 1920. Letters. Creases from mailing. Near Fine. Four AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, totaling 9 pages, three of them to his good Hoosier friend and fellow socialist, Oliver M. Sayler. In the first letter, dated 9 January 1920, Dreiser suggests places Sayler could work in New York, mentioning many names including T. R. Smith of the Century Company, Henry Harper at Harper's, J. Jefferson Jones of the John Lane Company, Herbert Kauffmann at McCLURE'S, and Horace Liveright. In the second letter, dated 14 February 1920, Dreiser kindly answers Sayler's request for a letter of introduction to a paper named THE EVENING POST. He informs Sayler that most likely the letter would not do much help as it has "in so far as I can recall been anything but condemnatory -- or perhaps I had better say scornful of me & my opinions." He urges Sayler to go to other places such as the HERALD or TRIBUNE. The third letter, also dated 14 February 1920, is addressed to Mr. Scott at THE EVENING POST recommending Sayler for a position as dramatic critic there even though Dreiser is "very much aware that in so far as THE EVENING POST is concerned any recommendation I may choose to offer in behalf of another may prove more of a hindrance than an aid." Dreiser goes on to state that Sayler "is one of a very few in America or elsewhere who correctly interpret the modern theatre with all its delicate threads of experiment and theory." He says that he follows Sayler's recommendations "with a security which has not been misplaced. Also as an experimenter myself in the possibilities of the stage I have … [Click Below for Full Description]

[c. 1920]. One of a series of five photographs known as The Cottingley Fairy pictures -- one of the great photographic hoaxes. Two young girls cousins, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright, produced the five pictures (two in 1917 and three more in 1920) using the camera which belonged to Elsie's father and taking them while playing in the garden of Elsie's home in Cottingley. In 1919 Elsie's mother took the first two pictures to a meeting of the Theosophical Society where all assembled were enthralled. They came to the attention of one of leaders, Edward Gardner, at the society's annual conference, who had them "authenticated" by photographer Harold Snelling who declared them "genuine unfaked photographs of single exposure". The images began circulating among the English spiritualist community, which included Arthur Conan Doyle. It was Doyle who urged the girls to take more photographs in 1920 -- this image is from that group. Some years later Gardner published Fairies: The Cottingley Photographs and Their Sequel. He described this image #4 as taken August 1920. Camera: Cameo Quarter. He explains why Elsie does not seem to be looking directly at the fairy: "With fairy lovers the habit of looking at first a little sideways is common". The seriousness of this description underscores the importance of these photographs to spiritualists of the early 20th century, and the absurdity as well. The photographs are sometimes found on cardstock mounts with printed captions underneath. This silver gelatin print, with a darkened caption, we believe to be a bit later, and probably produced … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. The "Don’t Spend It All" posters were part of an advertising campaign that ran during the early 1920’s which urged individuals to save more and deposit in their banks. Each design and respective message of these posters, while varied in their content, all reflect the purpose of the campaign as a whole: to make the general public feel that savings would help to improve their financial futures. This specific poster, painted by Arnold Lorne Hicks, features a pirate in the center of the image bolstering a wavering red flag. The pirate, and the thieves depicted in the left-hand corner signal the posters theme of saving "buried treasure." The bottom text of the poster reads "Buried Treasure draws no interest, put your money to work in this bank" telling consumers that by putting money in a bank account, the bank will pay interest on an individual’s savings. Arnold Lorne Hicks (1888 – 1970) was a Canadian painter, illustrator and cartoonist. After moving to New York, Lorne Hicks began attending classes at the Art Students League where he furthered his drawing technique as a commercial illustrator. Lorne Hicks illustrated for many children’s books in his early career but is best known for his contributions to the publication Classic Illustrated which featured comic book adaptations of literary classics such as Oliver Twist, The Prince and the Pauper and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is an Original Vintage Poster. It is not a reproduction. This poster is linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters. Width: 20 Height: 30

1920. This delightful Swiss poster depicts a family relaxing at the lakeside in the Valle’e de Joux next to Jura. It is a destination for family enjoyment and very well depicted by the Anonymous artist who created this image. It was commissioned to promote travel to the area for summer time leisure. The Vallée de Joux is a valley of the Jura Mountains mainly in the Swiss Canton of Vaud. The valley also continues into France (Jura département) at its higher, southwestern, end. Located 30 miles (48 km) north of Geneva and northwest of Lausanne, its mean elevation is over 3,300 feet (1,000 m). There are three Swiss lakes in the Vallée de Joux : the lac de Joux (around 6 miles (9.7 km) long), the lac Brenet and Lake Ter. The French border runs along the northern edge of the valley until, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the lac de Joux, the base of the valley becomes French territory. The valley then continues to climb gently towards the Lac des Rousses and the ski resort of Les Rousses. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. 1920. Grasse, the world’s perfume capital, is an idyllic town that sits on the French Riviera in the hills north of Cannes. The city is best known for its prospering perfume industry which began in the late 18th century. Grasse today houses the Musee International De La Perfume in its town center, with large perfumeries such as Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard offering tours of their production sites. Grasse, the "Cite du Calme, Des Fleurs et Des Parfumes" (city of calm, flowers and perfumes) appears as a lush garden, where an elegantly dressed woman and her accompanying dog can be observed enjoying a book amongst the floral environment. In the background, the city of Grasse quaintly sits on a blue mountainside, beautifully depicting both the luxury and simplicity that the town has to offer. 1920. This China-Rossi poster is an Italian liqueur advertisement. In the center of the image, a woman is galloping on a horse, using a bottle of the sweet China- Rossi as her whip. The text Elixir, Tonico (Tonic) and Ricostituente (Medicine) illustrated on the poster indicate that the liqueur is a digestive and meant to have health benefits. The bottom half of the poster reads "Fratelli (Brothers) Rossi Asiago", the producer of the liqueur, and the text reading "Succursale in Piove di Sacco" can be translated to "the Piove di Sacco branch", which was the company’s Padova-based location where the distribution was likely handled for this product. China Rossi, is an Italian Liqueur produced by Rossi D’ Asiago. The Liqueur is known for its composition of various herbs and aromatic essences as well as its sweet taste. The term ‘China’ refers to a tree in South America called "China Calissaia", whose bark was an ingredient originally used by the Chinese as a digestive. Juliet.does not want to see my Roses. Love to you, Stephen." On pink printed address stationery, Tennant wrote to a neighbor who was a friend of photographer and designer Cecil Beaton.
