Panama Canal Zone and Chile: [circa 1920]. Near Fine. Hardcover. Folio. Measuring 12" x 14". Brown leather album with gilt and blind stamped decorations. Contains 274 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 5", with a few scattered captions. Album has a cracked front hinge, rubbing on the leather, and waviness thus good only with near fine photographs. A photo album kept during a cruise through the Panama Canal and down the coast of South America to Chile around 1920. The album begins with a trip through the Panama Canal which had officially opened in 1914. Photos of the deforested banks of the area, a few inland scenes, and nearby towns are seen in the section which shows travel through the canal. The mechanism of the canal can also be seen in amateur snapshots taken while the ship passed through. The trip continues down the coast of South America. Penciled captions appear on a few occasions identifying the cities of Pisco, Peru; Antofagasta, Chile; and Tocopilla, Chile. The photos from the various ports and cities visited show the local people of the town, with an emphasis on children, as well as the towns themselves. Here the people of South America are seen on horseback herding animals and shopping at the town markets. One photo shows a man on a dirt road, on the back of a donkey going into town. The changing infrastructure of the area can also be seen with photos of recently added railway stations and cars juxtaposed next to villagers who continued to use the traditional methods of transportation, such as the aforementioned don … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hollywood: Burrud, 1920. This is an original and extremely rare promotional sales brochure, "HOLLYWOODLAND...A Delightful Homeplace in the Hills of Hollywood", from the early 1920s and the early days in the growth of the Hollywood, California real estate sector, with a focus on the Beachwood Canyon developments in the Hollywood Hills beneath and around the famed HOLLYWOOD Sign, which was at that time the HOLLYWOODLAND Sign. The brochure is illustrated throughout with vignette black and white photo illustrations and drawings of prospective homes and the streets recently carved into the hills and valleys of the film capital, with gorgeous full color covers and an interior color gatefold illustrated "map" of the area as well. The presentation of the book is very much in keeping with the Art Deco style and sensibility of the period, and near the front of the brochure the opening text is represented as being provided by the "syndicate" sponsoring the development: Harry Chandler, M. H. Sherman, E. P. Clark, and S. H. Woodruff (who is also referenced at the rear of the volume as being the chief realtor to contact with address given as 2690 North Beachwood Drive). The booklet was conceived by L. J. Burrud, with Art and Typography by Roche. The brochure is softbound in textured card stock covers, with stapled binding and slightly overhand covers, and two of the three staples still holding the cover and pages together very nicely, although the center staple has come loose. It measures approximately 7 5/8" by 11 3/4" overall, and is 24 pages including the 4 page gatefold at the center … [Click Below for Full Description]

Yezierska, Anzia
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1920. First edition of Anzia Yezierska's rare first book. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. and Mrs. Love appreciatively yours Anzia Yezierska." With an autographed letter signed from Yezierska tipped to the pastedown, dated February 25, 1921 on Metro-Goldwyn stationary, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Love at the Hayward Hotel in Los Angeles, thanking them profusely for their help, it reads, "I know I cannot put it into words, but I cannot help wanting to tell you how much both of you helped me yesterday. It would have taken a week of hard work for me to do what you helped me with in that one afternoon. The worst part of it is that I don't feel guilty at having taken so many hours of your time because somehow I am glad to have taken that much help from you. Sincerely yours Anzia Yezierska." Goldwyn hired Yezierska at an astronomical sum, based on the success of her stories in magazines, leading some in Hollywood to refer to her as the "sweatshop Cinderella." A silent film, shot on location in NY's Lower East Side, the setting of her stories of Jewish working-class life, was produced and distributed in 1922. By the mid-1920s, Yezierska had returned to New York from Hollywood. The Loves were probably screen writers or the silent film equivalent, who may have been teaching Yezierska the basics. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some chips and wear. In stories that draw heavily on her own life, Anzia Yezierska portrays the immigrant's struggle to become a "real" Ameri … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Clara Bow, Jean Arthur, James Hall, Edna May Oliver, Charles Sellon, Jean Harlow, dir: A. Edward Sutherland; Paramount. A great glimpse into life of the late-1920s, this early talkie left behind the typical Bow character and presented her in a subdued role. It is the story of two sisters who work as salesgirls in a department store. The younger sister is played by Jean Arthur in a very early lead role, she the unsympathetic character who stabs her sister in the back. Both girls are in love with the same store clerk. Clara again appeared with James Hall as her leading man, and he is with her in this fantastically colored card. A few pinholes, FINE.

Vernacular Photo Albums
np: [ca. 1920s]. Oblong 64mo (4.5" by 3.25"). Commercial olive-green, faux-leather string-tied album. 12 gray leaves with 43 small photos adhered to rectos and versos, with 17 hand-drawn, colored border illustrations. About near fine overall, with a bit of external rubbing; leaves clean, if mildly warped. Colors vivid throughout. Very good. An uncommonly ornamented vernacular album, with intricate border designs on most pages in a variety of styles, borrowing considerable Art Deco and rococo influence. Most designs are primarily floral, though many involve geometric shapes, and in addition to the drawings, several borders also use a kind of silver foil. An impressively well-executed work of amateur design and illustration, on an intimate and charming scale.

Presentation copy, inscribed by the playwright on the front free endpaper, "To Charles One of the Best Eugene O'Neill." In near fine condition. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. Eugene O'Neill's first full-length work to be staged, Beyond the Horizon won the 1920 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. "Theater historians point to O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon, which debuted in 1920, as the first native American tragedy. That play emerged from O'Neill's association with the Provincetown Players, one of many so-called 'little theaters' that developed in the 1910s to provide alternative fare to commercial drama of the time" (Playwrights in America, 2015). Holmes, Oliver Wendell
November 20, 1920. Autograph letter signed and entirely in the hand of Oliver Wendell Holmes on Supreme Court letterhead. Dated November 20th 1920, the letter reads, "Mr. Barnes called last Evening and delivered to me the handsome Copy of your amended essay. In his presence I established in my shelves, its place being by the side of a fine edition of my much admired Malthus. Mr. Barnes gave a charming account of you and I enjoyed his call very much - none the less that he had been received at any earlier moment with some suspicion as an unknown man with a bag. I hardly know which gives me the greater pleasure - your kind estimate of my work or the admirable quality of yours. On both grounds I am very much obliged to you and am Sincerely yours, O.W. Holmes." Holmes' legal philosophy was strongly influenced by the political and economic observations of Thomas Robert Malthus, powerfully expressed in his best-known work An Essay on the Principle of Population, published in 1798. Matted and framed with a drawing of Holmes. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 12 inches. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1902 to 1932, and as Acting Chief Justice of the United States January-February 1930. Noted for his long service, his concise and pithy opinions and his deference to the decisions of elected legislatures, he is one of the most widely cited United States Supreme Court justices in history, particularly for his "clear and present danger" opinion for a unanimous Court in the 1919 case … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hodgson, William Hope
London Holden and Hardingham 1920 - 1921. All eight cheap editions published shortly after Hodgson's death, in their original dust jackets, all illustrated in the same style and using the same colour palette. An important edition, as aside from a few magazine appearances Hodgson would not be in print again until his resurrection by Arkham House in the 1940s. Three are bound in cloth, all from 1920, with the later five in cheaper paper boards. The bindings are generally firm, the boards mostly clean with only minor bumping and rubbing, some with varying degrees of fading, Captain Gault has fared slightly worse than the other seven with loss to the paper at the bottom of the front board and a knock to the rear board. The text blocks are age browned and slightly dusty, all have the same bookseller's label to the front pastedown. The dust jackets are mostly slightly grubby with minor loss and short closed tears, some have small tape repairs or tape burns from old repairs to the reverse, a few have more significant loss and rubbing and two are substantially complete. A very rare complete set of Hodgson's weird, fantastic supernatural and nautical novels and short story collections, which to judge by the uniformity of condition and the bookseller's labels may well have been together since first purchased. Photography]: [Missionaries]: [Japan
[ca. 1920-1931]: [Kyushu, Japan]. Oblong 4to. String-tied commecial album; black boards. Contains 57 gelatin-silver prints (of various sizes, including 8" by 10", 7.5" by 5", and smaller), most of which are adhesive-mounted (with several loose), plus 11 postcards depicting Kyushu Lutheran churches, and one bookmark. One photograph apparently perished; several others loosening from pages. Else apparently complete.Album edges moderately worn; one photo missing a chunk at edge. Most are lightly toned, but overall clean. Very good or better. Very good +. Well-assembled photo album compiled by an American Lutheran missionary to Japan, whose face appears consistently in the majority of the photographs. The island of Kyushu is home to several Lutheran schools and churches, including the Kyushu Gakuin (Kyushu Lutheran College), and the Janice James School, both of which are pictured here (having recently been built in the early 1900's). The Kyushu Lutheran mission was founded in 1893 by American missionaries; within several years they began building churches under the supervision of one Charles Lafayette Brown (1874-1921), and presumably the subjects pictured here with members of that particualr mission. The album features posed group photographs of large congregations - as large as roughly 150 - captioned with date and location in cities including Kurume, Kamamoto, and Saga; additionally included are many images of church services in progress, plus several family portraits of church members. While Christianity began to spread when Japan phased out its isolationist policies in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Royersford, Pennsylvania, 1920. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong small octavo. Measuring 10" x 7". Black cloth over flexible paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 111 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7", with captions. Some pages detached but present, chips and tears very good with near fine photographs. A Pennsylvania woman's photo album depicting her school and home life beginning in 1917 through to around 1920. A caption on one of the photos reads "our home at Royersford." Some of the photos are out of order and begin with a 1919 graduation ceremony. The first photo is of a woman named Florence in her graduation cap and gown holding a diploma posed in a garden. Other graduates are seen on the following page with a caption that reads, "elocution graduates." Women are seen posed around a family home, laughing, and having a lovely time together. One photo shows three women posed together that reads, "dance of the rail fence;" another photo from this series reads, "three in a row - never catch a bo." The album shows a wedding, beach vacations, and girls climbing trees. One of the photos show two girls posed next to a sign that reads "The Bible Institute Colportage Assn. A New Biblical Study! Spiritism and the Fallen Angels." The final pages show a summer camp the woman worked, including images of uniformed girls, the mess hall, tents, and counselors. A modest but nice collection of photos depicting a young woman's life in Pennsylvania.

Eskildsen, John Peter. [Texas]
[McAllen, Tx, 1920. Very good.. Ten original photographs, each 5 x 7 inches. Light wear at edges. Captioned in negative. Contemporary pencil initials on versos. A rare group of ten original photographs by early 20th-century Texas photographer John Peter Esklidsen, who worked in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1910s and 1920s. The photographs present here were commercially produced by the Eskildsen Studio of McAllen, Texas, and perfectly showcase the boomtown flavor of the Valley in the 1920s. They show bountiful fields of cabbage, alfalfa, and onions (and in one case, the African American laborers who made it all possible), a grapefruit tree bent to the ground under the weight of its abundant fruit, fields of grass-fed pigs and dairy cattle, a newly built farm house captioned "New Eden," and a major irrigation canal. The images are titled in the negatives as follows: 1. Grapefruit in the Dr. Kalbfleisch Orchard. 2. A Magic Valley Cabbage Field. 3. 100 Rhodes-Grass Raised Duroc-Jerseys in the Bruce Young Farm. San Juan Tex. 4. Irrigating Cabbage and Onions in the Valley. 5. Mercedes. Main Canal. 6. Llano Grand Lake and Stewart Club House. 7. 5th Cutting Alfalfa on the Johnson Farm, June 17, '20. 8. Dairy Herd in Sudan Grass - Rio Grande Valley. 9. A Farm in the Valley. 10. "New Eden" - The 6 Months Old Lentz Farm House. We locate a few individual prints by Eskildsen in the photo collections of UT Rio Grande Valley and SMU, none present here.
