Williams, Mt: Western Office, 1920. Good.. 8pp. Two loose folio sheets. Previously folded, with several separations repaired with tape along old folds. Even tanning. An unrecorded promotional for the town of Williams, Montana. In its post-World War I heyday, it thrived as a result of its proximity to the Valier Irrigation Project and its location on the purpose-built spur from the Great Northern Railroad, but today is a ghost town east of Valier. The text extolls these geographic virtues of the town, as well as the agricultural benefits from the irrigation project and the good prospects from Montana's other industries in the region. Perhaps most valuable are the descriptions of the town as it existed in 1919 -- its businesses, its residences, its attractions -- and accompanying photographic illustrations. At the time of publication, Williams was an electrified town with its own grocery, bank, train station, blacksmith, pool hall, and grain elevators, situated in the midst of 125,000 acres of reclaimed land, but the fortunes of its investors declined and the town dwindled to nothing before World War II. Not in OCLC.

LINDSAY, David.
London: Methuen & Co., 1920. London: Methuen & Co.,, 1920. First edition of this notably uncommon and influential work Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt and in blind to front cover. Small marginal pencil annotation to p. 1. Spine very gently cocked, gilt lettering uncommonly bright and largely unfaded, spine ends and corners slightly bumped, cloth a little soiled with a couple of small marks, faint stain to spine, shadow of removed label around title to front cover, touch of wear to top edge of boards, light foxing to contents, a couple of faint finger marks; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of this "remarkable work". The first edition of Lindsay's classic novel was printed in a run of 1,250 copies, with around 500 to 600 copies released in the first issue binding as here, with gilt lettering and ruling to spine (Bleiler). Lindsay's most famous and influential work, A Voyage to Arcturus is "a metaphysical novel set in the framework of an interplanetary voyage, using the incidents of fantastic adventure which develops using a series of concrete adventures with strange beings, weird landscapes, and mystifying experiences" (Bleiler). "Stylistically the book works superbly by constantly subverting the reader's expectations in parallel with those of the protagonist" (ODNB). This copy is in the first issue with the undated eight page publisher's catalogue at the end, with "Einstein's Relativity - The Special and the General Theory" listed to the head of the second panel. Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction 1019.

This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate. Paul Pelliot
Paris: Librairie Paul Geuthner, 1920. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Text in French. Illustrated in black and white. Original portfolio. Percaline covered boards and illustrated paper pasted on front. Covers with ribbons. Slight water marks on about 14 plates not affecting the photographic plates. Otherwise in very good condition. Illustrated with 1 large fold-out plan and 64 loose photographic plates (I to LXIV) in collotype, this important work covers the Buddhist paintings and sculptures from the caves 1-30 of Touen-Houang during the Wei, Tang and Song periods. The collection of this first volume, was essentially devoted to the implementation of the linguistic, historical and archaeological materials gathered by the author and his companions during their mission in Central Asia and the Far East, from 1906 to 1909. Paul Eugène Pelliot (28 May 1878 - 26 October 1945) was a French Sinologist and Orientalist best known for his explorations of Central Asia and his discovery of many important Chinese texts among the Dunhuang manuscripts. He was born on 28 May 1878 in Paris, France, and initially intended to pursue a career as a foreign diplomat. Accordingly, he studied English as a secondary school student at La Sorbonne, then studied Mandarin Chinese at the "École des Langues Orientales Vivantes" (School of Living Oriental Languages). Pelliot was a gifted student, and completed the school's three-year Mandarin course in only two years. His rapid progress and accomplishments attracted the attention of the Sinologist Édouard Chavannes, t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Diary] Katharine Shepard
Newberryport, MA: 1920. Standard Daily Journal in original blue cloth binding with title to front board. Containing 365 pages of daily entries plus 56 additional pages of notes, largely monthly expense accounts and recipes to be made. Documenting the life of Massachusetts nurse and women's club leader Katharine Shepard, this densely packed diary gives insight into the activities, ideas, and feelings of an active woman who, along with the female population of the U.S., had just obtained the right to vote. Everything about the present diary shows that Katharine was an active, intelligent, ambitious, and civically engaged individual. 45 years old at the time of this journal, she suffers no fools at work or in her clubs; and she values the balance she has accomplished between her intense work and activist commitments and self-care. Both front and rear pastedowns handle the overload of her notes on accounts, contacts, and recipes. Internally, she diligently documents all 365 days of her year. She discusses the nursing lesson plans, classes, students, and lectures she gives; she records and reflects on speaking appointments at the Roxbury Women's Club, Amherst College, Girls' City Club, and the Cambridge Women's Club; she keeps track of various bills and legislation she is in support of or wants to assist in banning in her state. As the presidential election nears, as expected, she has educated herself, chosen a side, and thrown her weight behind her candidate, attending a Republican rally in October and noting on November 2 that she has voted for the first time. In the midst of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. Four photograph albums containing a total of 558 mounted images documenting military training and service in Japan in 1920s and 30s, all in very good condition. Although we acquired these albums together, they appear to have belonged to different people. Most, if not all, were officers. One album has handwritten captions, the others do not, but do have some group photographs with captions in the negative. Two identity documents are tipped in to one album that, we are told, are for people with the family names Yokoo and Hayashi. During the interwar years, Japanese culture was pervaded by the conviction that a strong military was the solution to most problems, foreign and domestic. The Army enjoyed considerable independence from the civilian government, and various factions within the military played a major role in directing the country's foreign policy. As described by historian David Hunter-Chester in The Culture of Military Organizations, (Cambridge, 2019) the Imperial Japanese Army's "organizational culture produced tough, proficient, and courageous soldiers." These albums reflect great pride in military service, with numerous images of their subjects in dress uniform (singly and in groups) and engaged in military exercises, including bayonet training, firing machine guns, field and parade drills, physical fitness (ropes course, gymnastics), equestrian training, cleaning and assembly of weapons, and more. There are also images of soldiers in the classroom, at leisure (sporting events, sumo, at a public bath, etc.), and at special events and celebrations-the latte … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Aviation]
1920. An archive of research and writing materials gathered for a biography of Ormer Locklear, the daredevil aerial stuntman who was the first to change planes mid-air and died while filming the silent movie The Skywayman (1920). It took more than a decade for author Art Ronnie to research Locklear's life and find a publisher for his book, Locklear: The Man Who Walked on Wings (1973). Born in Greenville, Texas, Locklear (1891-1920) became fascinated with flying when aviation pioneer Calbraith Perry Rodgers landed in a Fort Worth field to unclog a fuel line. With his brothers, Locklear built gliders and later, learned to fly after joining the U.S. Army Air Force in 1917, eventually becoming a flight instructor. He left the Army in 1919 and with two colleagues, joined show promoter and manager William Pickens to form an aerial circus before he was recruited for the silver screen. In his personal life, Locklear married Ruby Graves in 1915, but they separated in 1919 and thereafter she refused to grant him a divorce. After moving to Hollywood, he became involved with silent screen actress Viola Dana, who was at the airfield the night of the accident and witnessed his death. One of the key items in this archive is a scarce, original poster for Locklear's first feature film, The Great Air Robbery (Universal, 1919). After watching one of Locklear's aerial circus shows, Carl Laemmle signed Locklear to a series of motion pictures. In this movie Locklear played Larry Cassidy, a pilot for the U.S. Air Mail Service, who defends a shipment of $20,000 in gold from the villainous clutches … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vellum spine and corners, printed blue cloth a bit faded and worn on the board edges. The first 4 leaves are loose. A very good, near fine copy. Copy 19 presented to Deberny & Peignot. The seventeen sections offer a panoply of material with hundreds faces and borders, some fine multi-color decorative samples, Art Nouveau and Deco material, with extensive examples of uses. Photographs.
1920. Large oblong 4to, unpaginated. About 50 leaves containing over 500 photos.. D. C. Stroud joined the Navy as an enlisted man in the late 1920s, and stayed on as a "lifer." (According to a menu laid into this album, he was a Commissary Chief Pay Clerk at a naval air station in 1944.) His first posting was aboard the U.S.S. "Saratoga," one of the Navy's first aircraft carriers. After her launch in 1928 she was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, and remained on that mission, participating in war games along North and Central American coasts, right up to WW II. Stroud began assembling photographs in boot camp and continued collecting them at the Asian ports at which the "Saratoga" and his subsequent ship, the destroyer "John D. Edwards" put in. The "Edwards" was on a lengthy tour as part of the Asiatic Fleet. Operating out of the Philippines, along the Chinese Coast, and off Japan, she guarded American interests during the Sino-Japanese War in the late 1930s, underwent training and battle practice, and operated with the Yangtze River Patrol, and South China Sea Patrol. Stroud collected photos from all these ports, including the Philippines, and more exotic sites such as Bali. At a later date, probably toward the end of WW II, he assembled them in this souvenir photo album, some with identifying notes on the verso. The album, entirely in black leather, was produced in Shanghai by the Photo Sales Company, and it is quite an elaborate job. Its front cover is embossed with relief images of a dragon, a temple, and a junk, with names of ports printed in gold, and a central lozenge r … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Texas]. [Oil]
Fort Worth, 1920. About very good.. Large folding map, 34 x 22 inches. Two short separations along central vertical fold; short closed tear at center of right edge. Pinholes and minor wear at corners from contemporary mounting. Scattered contemporary pencil annotations. Light, even tanning. An unrecorded, highly detailed map of land ownership, oil wells, and industry development in East Texas just after World War I, published by the Standard Blueprint & Map Company located in Fort Worth. The map shows portions of Gregg, Rush, Smith, and Upshur Counties, encompassing towns such as Longview, Gladewater, Kilgore, Overton, and Henderson, with the Sabine River running through its center. Owners for every parcel of land within the scope of the map are printed, and oil wells, both producing and in development, are marked with blue and white circles. Several additional well locations are added in pencil. The chart is particularly valuable as it depicts the development of the oil industry in East Texas, north of the lucrative, early 20th-century discoveries near Beaumont and the Gulf, at a fairly early stage. Valuable discoveries and large-scale development in the area depicted by this map did not arrive the late 1920s and early 1930s (Texas State Historical Association). Contemporary advertisements for the publisher, Standard Blue Print Map and Engineering, promote the availability of over 200 oil maps of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas from the firm, but only a handful are recorded. We locate no copies of the present map in OCLC or available sales rec … [Click Below for Full Description]
