[Click Below for Full Description]

[EGYPT - ANCIENT].
[Fragment from the left side of a funerary stele].[Egypt, 26th dynasty? ca. 650/600 BC?]. Fragment of a funerary stele, painted over plaster on a wooden plank (14 x 7 x 1.5 cm), with a small part of a pictorial scene above on a beige ground, and a hieroglyphic inscription in five (of six?) horizontal bands below (reading from right to left) on an alternating yellow and beige ground. The border begins immediately above the first line of the inscription, and next to it appears the reddish-brown bare foot of a standing figure facing the centre (that is, facing right), probably the deceased making offerings to Osiris. The back is also plastered and painted yellow. A fragment of an ancient Egyptian funerary stele (late period). The text, from the left half of the stele, records offerings for Osiris, so the lost right half probably recorded offerings for Horus, each with the relevant offer scene above. The text, as far as it survives, was translated by Andrew Baumann for the epigraphic survey of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute:line 1: [May a royal offering be given to Osiris ... lord of] Abydos, so that he might (in turn) give a thousand of [bread ...]line 2: ... wine, offerings, and provisions ...line 3: [everything good and pure] on which a god lives ...line 4: ... Nun in his cavern ...line 5: [...], true of voice, son of Panehsi, [true of voice] ...Abydos, about 90 km northwest of Luxor, was the site of the Great Osiris Temple. Nun, father of the sun-god Re, was the oldest Egyptian god, representing the primeval waters of chaos. The son of Panehsi may be the dec … [Click Below for Full Description]

RANSOME, Arthur; MACKENZIE, Thomas
Nisbet, 1920. First edition, edition de luxe in large format, printed on beautiful handmade paper. Number 213 of only 250 copies, numbered and signed by the artist. American issue with Brentano on the spine (though printed and bound in the UK with the rest of the limitation). Large quarto, 335mm x 265mm. Full white buckram with gilt embossed lettering and illustration. Top edge is gilt and others are untrimmed. A near fine copy, previous owner's name to the front blank. From endpaper to endpaper each page is decorated with black and white drawings, in a striking art nouveau style. There are twelve colour plates mounted beneath captioned tissue guards, all are in perfect condition. The plates are vibrant and striking. This book is a wonderful collaboration of Ransome, telling the story of Aladdin and His Lamp in rhyme, and beautiful decorations by Yorkshire artist, Thomas Mackenzie. In a letter in late 1919 Mackenzie laments problems with the production of this Edition-de-Luxe saying that the sheets were not dry enough to be bound up, because of "the continuous damp weather and the hand made paper it is printed on". As a result the Deluxe edition did not go on sale until sometime in 1920 (the book was aimed at the Christmas gift market of 1919). The artist also comments "there are mistakes in it due to inexperience and immaturity which I hope you will close your eyes to." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1920. Four photograph albums containing a total of 558 mounted images documenting military training and service in Japan in 1920s and 30s, all in very good condition. Although we acquired these albums together, they appear to have belonged to different people. Most, if not all, were officers. One album has handwritten captions, the others do not, but do have some group photographs with captions in the negative. Two identity documents are tipped in to one album that, we are told, are for people with the family names Yokoo and Hayashi. During the interwar years, Japanese culture was pervaded by the conviction that a strong military was the solution to most problems, foreign and domestic. The Army enjoyed considerable independence from the civilian government, and various factions within the military played a major role in directing the country's foreign policy. As described by historian David Hunter-Chester in The Culture of Military Organizations, (Cambridge, 2019) the Imperial Japanese Army's "organizational culture produced tough, proficient, and courageous soldiers." These albums reflect great pride in military service, with numerous images of their subjects in dress uniform (singly and in groups) and engaged in military exercises, including bayonet training, firing machine guns, field and parade drills, physical fitness (ropes course, gymnastics), equestrian training, cleaning and assembly of weapons, and more. There are also images of soldiers in the classroom, at leisure (sporting events, sumo, at a public bath, etc.), and at special events and celebrations-the latter … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Montana]
Williams, Mt: Western Office, 1920. Good.. 8pp. Two loose folio sheets. Previously folded, with several separations repaired with tape along old folds. Even tanning. An unrecorded promotional for the town of Williams, Montana. In its post-World War I heyday, it thrived as a result of its proximity to the Valier Irrigation Project and its location on the purpose-built spur from the Great Northern Railroad, but today is a ghost town east of Valier. The text extolls these geographic virtues of the town, as well as the agricultural benefits from the irrigation project and the good prospects from Montana's other industries in the region. Perhaps most valuable are the descriptions of the town as it existed in 1919 -- its businesses, its residences, its attractions -- and accompanying photographic illustrations. At the time of publication, Williams was an electrified town with its own grocery, bank, train station, blacksmith, pool hall, and grain elevators, situated in the midst of 125,000 acres of reclaimed land, but the fortunes of its investors declined and the town dwindled to nothing before World War II. Photographs.
1920. Large oblong 4to, unpaginated. About 50 leaves containing over 500 photos.. D. C. Stroud joined the Navy as an enlisted man in the late 1920s, and stayed on as a "lifer." (According to a menu laid into this album, he was a Commissary Chief Pay Clerk at a naval air station in 1944.) His first posting was aboard the U.S.S. "Saratoga," one of the Navy's first aircraft carriers. After her launch in 1928 she was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, and remained on that mission, participating in war games along North and Central American coasts, right up to WW II. Stroud began assembling photographs in boot camp and continued collecting them at the Asian ports at which the "Saratoga" and his subsequent ship, the destroyer "John D. Edwards" put in. The "Edwards" was on a lengthy tour as part of the Asiatic Fleet. Operating out of the Philippines, along the Chinese Coast, and off Japan, she guarded American interests during the Sino-Japanese War in the late 1930s, underwent training and battle practice, and operated with the Yangtze River Patrol, and South China Sea Patrol. Stroud collected photos from all these ports, including the Philippines, and more exotic sites such as Bali. At a later date, probably toward the end of WW II, he assembled them in this souvenir photo album, some with identifying notes on the verso. The album, entirely in black leather, was produced in Shanghai by the Photo Sales Company, and it is quite an elaborate job. Its front cover is embossed with relief images of a dragon, a temple, and a junk, with names of ports printed in gold, and a central lozenge r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir George Warner
Printed at the University Press, Oxford, 1920. xix, 341; [viii], 126 plates [plus 2 frontis. = 128 in all]; tall folio (16 x 12 in.), original light brown cloth, gilt spine titles, uncut, t.e.g. The rare, lavishly produced catalogue of C. W. Dyson Perrins’s collection of 135 illuminated manuscripts, described in Volume I in extensive detail by Sir George Warner, the then-retired Keeper of Manuscripts in the British Museum. Perrins amassed his collection (often in consultation with Fitzwilliam Museum director Sydney Cockerell) during the twenty-year period prior to 1920. Most notably, in 1906, Perrins acquired a group of 33 items from painter, art dealer and collector Charles Fairfax Murray ("whose fine taste and judgement are a guarantee of quality," Warner, vii); other sources included the dealers Sotheran, Quaritch, Leighton and Rosenthal. Dyson Perrins (1864–1958), of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce fame, acquired these illuminated manuscripts "mainly for their artistic interest without any particular regard to the nature of their literary contents" (ibid.). The majority of them are English, French and Italian, rounded out by several Flemish, Dutch, Spanish, German, Bohemian, Swiss, Byzantine and Oriental items. The text volume is printed on thick paper by the University Press, Oxford, from whose own Printer’s Library this set originates (with their small tasteful book label on the front pastedowns). Volume II consists entirely of plates, 128 in collotype or photogravure, executed by Emery Walker and many with more than one leaf from the manuscript illustrated. 1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino [FIAT]
Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, N.d. [ca. 1920]. A rare pictorial record produced during the World War I, of Fiat's main manufacturing plant, presented to General Paul André Marie Maistre (1858-1922) the commander of the French Army in Italy for a brief but important period of the War (Dec. 2017 until the end of March, 2018). The decorative FIAT logo is stamped on the album's front cover; in lower corner there is this stamped presentation statement: "A Mr. Le Général Maistre/ Commandant de L'Armee Française en Italie." Logo title page (same as the cover logo, but in b&w), with an engraved card taped thereon: "Hommages de la "Fiat" à Mr. Le General Maistre, Commandant de l'Armee Française en Italie."The volume itself is a photographic tour of Fiat's Torino factory as it was at the height of its war production period. In only one of the photographs are there workers present--the remaining 47 images focus solely on the production equipment and the parts (e.g., chassis, engines, radiators) of the to-be assembled vehicles. As is obvious from the photos here, the main productions were lorries for deliveries or for medical transportation. The volume is an excellent visual record of the manufacturing techniques before Ford's assembly-line style of production was adopted (by Fiat and other firms). The images show a conscious effort to project an impressive picture of power and efficiency. While the later [1922] streamlined Lingotto building would create an organic and flowing production process (based on Ford's production line), these photos depict a rigid, precise approa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece and 8 other similar plates, 4 folding maps, 2 sketch maps to the text, folding facsimile of "Summary of News in Persian and Hindi character". A little rubbed, corners bumped, front hinge just started, endpapers and tissue-guards browned, a section not entirely neatly clipped form the front free endpaper presumably to remove an ownership inscription, mild offsetting from the photogravures, else very good indeed. First and only contemporary edition, this the imposing limited issue on larger thicker paper, copy 64 of 150 numbered and signed on behalf of the publishers, and with a suite of high-quality photogravure portraits - of the author and eight Indian notables who served during the conflict - which do not appear in the standard issue. Although this title is well-represented institutionally in the trade issue, only BL appears to have this de luxe, and even the regular edition is extremely uncommon on the market, and we have never handled this limited issue before. Tashkent: Sakomta, Tashobllit, [1920s]. 52x71 cm. Chromolithography. In Russian and Uzbeki. Good, poster is backed, restoration of the edges. One of 1000 copies. Design by unknown artist. The poster shows the approaching of the new Soviet reality in the Central Asian republics. The map on the background covers the territory of modern Uzbekistan, with the fragments of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan as well. The poster is dedicated to Amu Darya, one of the two major rivers supplying Central Asia. The famous Lenin's 'bow between the city and the countryside' is shown in the local variant. The peasant is holding astrakhan fur and waving at the city in the left corner of the poster with the message 'All of the primary products to the factories!' He also leads the caravan of goods, that has the poster 'to the fair!' in front of them. The female worker waving back to the peasant from the city holds the flag that says 'More goods to the faraway territories'. The picture concludes with the sun rising over Kyzylkum dessert, the steamer going down the river and the thickets of cotton alongside Amu-Darya.

Warcup, Kate Parry
Deptford, England, 1920. 810 x 895 mm. A charming, hand crafted, W.W.I. souvenir made by Kate Parry Warcup (1867-1937). With over 200 signatures honoring her fellow VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment 1909-1918) members from the South East London community of Deptford, who, we presume, either volunteered for, or were associated with the Red Cross Between 1914-1919. The tablecloth is 'signed' - 'A Wartime Souvenir, from Kate D. Warcup, June, 1920'. A logical theory of how this memento was made - most likely, signatures were gathered and first made in pencil with Kate later hand stitching each name with precision. Notably, the central signatures are of the Mayor and Mayoress of Deptford at the time, 'W.A. Wayland', and 'Chas Wm Bowerman M.P.P.C.' Charles William Bowerman (1851-1947) was a life-long trade unionist and politician; the Labour MP for Deptford from 1906 to 1931. A remarkable, one of a kind item, in excellent condition. Some light spotting to a few areas, otherwise beautifully preserved. Cotton embroidered table cloth, hand stitched. Near fine [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1920. Photograph album of Reverend John B. Panfil and his sister Elsie Panfil, containing just over 500 original photographs taken during their extensive travels in 1920s Iraq and other parts of the Middle East. The pair were based in Mosul, but visited many small and remote settlements populated by Assyrian Christians and ethnic-minority Yazidis. Some of these places were seldom seen by westerners, and the Panfils' images-with captions identifying individuals and families by name-provide rare visual documentation of the people who lived there. Rev. Panfil was sent to Iraq as part of an Episcopal mission aimed at supporting and strengthening the ancient Assyrian Church of the East. In a letter written shortly after his arrival in Mosul, he wrote:: "I am working presently among the Assyrians; their church is the eldest one in Christendom. They have lost their country during the war and were massacred by the Turks and Kurds and are in need of the American help in order to exist. We are trying to revive their old church, their customs and their language." In the course of this work, Panfil traveled to meet with local church leaders, with whom he could work to build schools that would maintain Assyrian culture and traditions, educate young men for the priesthood, and provide humanitarian assistance when possible. He and Elsie (who seems to have been his constant companion) visited the Assyrian village of Bebadi (Dohuk Province) and nearby Amadia fortress; the Yazidi temple at Lalish; Dair Mar Elia (Saint Elijah's Monastery, believed to be the oldest Christian monastery in Iraq … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aviation]
1920. An archive of research and writing materials gathered for a biography of Ormer Locklear, the daredevil aerial stuntman who was the first to change planes mid-air and died while filming the silent movie The Skywayman (1920). It took more than a decade for author Art Ronnie to research Locklear's life and find a publisher for his book, Locklear: The Man Who Walked on Wings (1973). Born in Greenville, Texas, Locklear (1891-1920) became fascinated with flying when aviation pioneer Calbraith Perry Rodgers landed in a Fort Worth field to unclog a fuel line. With his brothers, Locklear built gliders and later, learned to fly after joining the U.S. Army Air Force in 1917, eventually becoming a flight instructor. He left the Army in 1919 and with two colleagues, joined show promoter and manager William Pickens to form an aerial circus before he was recruited for the silver screen. In his personal life, Locklear married Ruby Graves in 1915, but they separated in 1919 and thereafter she refused to grant him a divorce. After moving to Hollywood, he became involved with silent screen actress Viola Dana, who was at the airfield the night of the accident and witnessed his death. One of the key items in this archive is a scarce, original poster for Locklear's first feature film, The Great Air Robbery (Universal, 1919). After watching one of Locklear's aerial circus shows, Carl Laemmle signed Locklear to a series of motion pictures. In this movie Locklear played Larry Cassidy, a pilot for the U.S. Air Mail Service, who defends a shipment of $20,000 in gold from the villainous clutche … [Click Below for Full Description]

Looney, J. Thomas
London: Cecil Palmer, 1920. Cecil Palmer, London, 1920. Stated First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Book The publication of this first edition on March 4, 1920 marked the beginning of the Oxfordian movement, which promotes Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, as the most likely candidate to have written the works ascribed to William Shakespeare. The book has been reprinted a number of times, most recently in a new "centennial" edition by the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship, which traces its roots to Looney's book. On March 4, 2020, in a news conference to mark the centennial of its publication, editor James A. Warren called Looney's book "the Most Revolutionary Book in the History of Shakespeare Studies." This copy of the First Edition was a gift from Looney to his daughter. She has marked in pencil at the top outside corner of the front free end paper, "Evelyn Bodel | [Address] | Swadlincote | 1942 | Presented by my father - the Author | John Thomas Looney." Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 551 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight and unmarked, though a littled toned from age. n.p. [circa 1920s], [Japan]. Modern Life In Japan: Bob Haircuts And Tea In Kimono Skillfully executed series of vignettes featuring Japanese moga ("modern girls") in Western dress next to men and women in traditional Japanese dress â€" likely a sketchbook or lookbook of designs by a professional to pitch their work in the heavily illustrated magazine culture of the pre-war era. Japan of the 1920s was a time of great energy, change, and optimism. Since being forced to open its borders in 1853, the country had ambiguously embraced Western culture â€" a tension captured here in the depiction of moga, the Japanese version of flappers, with Western dresses and bob haircuts, next to women in kimono and traditional hairstyles. Men too are shown in suits and kimono. The drawings survey many everyday aspects of life in 1920s Japan: a chic family in Western dress, a child wearing their dad's fedora, a woman in kimono hanging laundry, children having a tea party, a waitress in an elaborate Western dress clearly meant to be invoking the 18th century (seemingly a precursor of the themed maid cafe), an array of different people making, serving, and eating food/drink, a child with an umbrella in the rain, and more. The unknown artist was not an amateur, showing clear familiarity with traditional sumi-e techniques. Many of the compositions are structured around white space, just as magazine illustrations are composed around blocks of text (often left as white space in the design and finished later). Magazine publications exploded in this period: considering the advanced techniques and the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lord, Annie F.
Vineyard Haven: Falmouth Publishing of Falmouth, Mass, 1920. Octavo (23 x 15.5 cm), 48 pages. Advertisements. Index (actually a table of contents). The title page includes the statement, "This class was organized by Mrs. Annie F. Lord in 1912". A community cookbook of two hundred eighty recipes, attributed in many cases to women with surnames still associated with the island's history, such as Downs, Bangs, Tilton, Chadwick, and Merrill. In evidence is the search for a footing along the continuum of acculturation: Hungarian Goulash, Mexican Rice, Dixie Spoon Bread, Russian Beet Soup, and Portuguese Fluffy Cake jostle for attention among "Old Island Recipes" such as Salt Codfish with Potatoes and Sea Moss Blanc-Mange, not to forget "Gay Head Specialities" from the lighthouse neighborhood, such as Chowder with pork and quahogs. A definitive dating seems elusive. An advertisement for a firm called Issokson's (page 14) places Vineyard Recipes after 1914, while another adjacent on the same page relates to real-estate activity that cannot be verified until the early 1920s. Some confirmation of a terminus post quem may be supplied by the note "Czecho Slovakia" attached to a recipe for Kolache (that is, kolá e), a geographical designation unlikely to have been in general circulation before the close of World War I. Vineyard Haven is the main port of entry to Martha's Vineyard, a neighborhood within the town of Tisbury. The First Baptist Church was established in 1837, its congregation still active, meeting in its "new" building - dedicated in 1885 - at the corner of Spring and Wil … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Representation and Stereotypes] [American Indians] [“Playing Indian”]
American: V.p., Late 19th-early 20th century, 1920. The white American tradition of "playing Indian" - a concept explored in full in Philip Deloria's eponymous book (1998) - has been a part of American national identity from the colonial times onward. Examples abound, from the Boston Tea Party to the more recent hippie and New Age movement. The practice, Deloria argues, shaped white and American Indian culture. Collected here are eleven examples, some early, of white Americans "playing Indian," including: a 8 x 10 inch mounted silver print, c. 1900-1920 of a group of children; a mounted 8 x 10 inch of an adult and child credited to McLeod, The Wild West Photographer; a Mounted 5 x 4 inch cabinet card of a group in front of a teepee performing a mock execution; a mounted 3 x 8 inch cabinet card of two performers, both elaborately costumed; three realphoto postcards of young children in headdresses; a photographic advertisement for Cowboy Tom's Roundup; and three smaller portraits. Generally very good condition, well preserved, with some light wear. [Attributes: First Edition]

NURSING PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, SISTERS OF MERCY
Baltimore: n.p., 1920. Thirty-two 6" x 8" gelatin silver photographs mounted to both sides of black cardstock leaves, string-tied, with new black paper covers added. Undated, but the year 1920 appears on a chalkboard in one image. Pencil writing in a hard-to-decipher language-possibly Lithuanian-on first image, otherwise clean. Images are very clear and appear professional. The Sisters of Mercy—an international Catholic women's association dedicated to helping those in need—established the Baltimore City Hospital in 1874 and the School of Nursing in 1899. The school offered a rigorous three-year training program with classes taught by experienced nurses and by professors from the nearby College of Physicians & Surgeons. The school quickly drew large numbers of applicants, and a much-needed dormitory-like home was constructed that offered "more than 100 sleeping rooms which are well lighted and ventilated, spacious parlors, library, lecture room, study and recreation halls" (Costello, Sisters of Mercy of Maryland). Some of the images in this album appear to show parts of the nurses' home (a courtyard, parlor, and dining room), while others show nursing student in the classroom, learning to make a hospital bed, assisting during surgery, working in the pharmacy and the kitchen, tending babies in the maternity ward, and ministering to the sick and wounded in wards and in patient rooms. Of particular interest are the images from classrooms illustrating not only the teaching aids on the walls but the furniture and overall environment in which the nurses learn and train as well … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dada.
Paris (Au Sans Pareil), 1920.. (8)pp. 10 illus. (halftone photographs). 4to. Self-wraps., stapled as issued, with front cover design by Picabia. Contributions by Tzara, Picabia (Manifeste Cannibale Dada), Breton, Éluard, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Soupault, Cocteau, Dermée, Aragon, Arnauld, Evola and others. The penultimate issue of Dada, brought out by Tzara in March 1920, at a moment of inspired Dada activity in Paris, just before the Manifestation Dada at the Maison de lOeuvre (March 27), the first appearance of Cannibale (April), the Festival Dada at the Salle Gaveau (May). Reminiscent of 391 and with a strong Parisian bias along Littérature lines (like Dada 6), Dadaphones visual interest is mostly in its insistent typographic density, rather than its illustration--though it does include a beautiful abstract Schadograph, purporting to show Arp and Serner in the Royal Crocodarium in London, as well as the spiralingly zany Picabia drawing on the front cover. Central fold; a little light soiling.

Strobl, Karl Hans, Alfons von Czibulka (editors); Leo Perutz,
Dreilander Verlag, 1920. Collection of 38 issues of the landmark Weimar-era periodical highlighting fantasy, horror, and early science fiction stories. Text in German. One of the world's first fantasy periodicals, (alongside the Swedish "Hugin") "Der Orchideengarten" featured a mix of new German stories alongside translations of foreign literature (largely French), including works by Victor Hugo, Guy de Maupassant, Voltaire, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Capek, H.G. Wells, and many others. The magazine also made forays into the proto-science fiction genre, as seen in Vol. 2 No. 4, entitled "Phantastik der Technik." A true product of the Weimar era's cultural blossoming, the magazine also features stunning illustrations both with its two- and three-color cover art and its woodcut reproductions throughout: sinister yet elegant visions of anthropomorphic flowers, religious idols, Grim Reapers, and gory deaths. "Der Orchideengarten" featured the work of Gustave Dore, Otto Linnekogel, Karl Ritter, Alfred Kubim, Carl Rabus, Otto Nuckel, and many more. This archive contains the following largely sequential issues: Vol.1, Nos.1-18 (16 and 17 published as a combined issue); Vol.2, Nos.1-6, 8, 10-16, 18-24. 9 x 12 inches, saddle stitched.
