Caesar, Gaius Julius.
[Italy], c.1920. 43 cm x52 cm. Oval shaped Plaque. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. The Temple of Caesar or Temple of Divus Iulius (Latin: Templum Divi Iuli; Italian: Tempio del Divo Giulio), also known as Temple of the Deified Julius Caesar, delubrum, heroon or Temple of the Comet Star, is an ancient structure in the Roman Forum of Rome, Italy, located near the Regia and the Temple of Vesta. The temple was begun by Augustus in 42 BC after the senate deified Julius Caesar posthumously. Augustus dedicated the prostyle temple (it is still unknown whether its order was Ionic, Corinthian or composite) to Caesar, his adoptive father, on 18 August 29 BC, after the Battle of Actium. It stands on the east side of the main square of the Roman Forum, between the Regia, Temple of Castor and Pollux, and the Basilica Aemilia, on the site of Caesar's cremation and where Caesar's testament was read aloud at the funeral by Mark Antony. (Wikipedia) Gaius Julius Caesar (12 or 13 July 100 BC - 15 March 44 BC), known by his cognomen Julius Caesar, was a Roman politician and military general who played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. He is also known as an author of Latin prose. In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus and Pompey formed a political alliance that dominated Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power as Populares were opposed by the Optimates within the Roman Senate, among them Cato the Younger with the frequent support of Cicero. Caesar rose to become one of the most po … [Click Below for Full Description]

H.G. Wells
London: William Heinemann, 1920. The cloth binding is slightly bent, and the pages no long crisp white; apart from that in generally very nice condition. The jacket could be called fair only; a long tear cuts through the title on the spine head; more long tears at the corners; signs of weakening at the front joint; a little worn edges. While it may not be in the best of conditions, it is of a very frail material - as is the binding - bound to have few surviving examples. Later printings became more robust. War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells William Heinemann, London, 1920 Heinemann is the original publisher of this classic science fiction work and kept printing it throughout a large portion of the 20th century. This copy belongs to a cheaply made series of the 1910s and 1920s. In this case there is an early example with the original, iconic dust jacket extant, showing the machines wreaking havoc at the sea. The cloth binding is slightly bent, and the pages no long crisp white; apart from that in generally very nice condition. Evans, C[harles] S[eddon]; Rackham, Arthur (Illustrations
William Heinemann, 1920. Rackham, Arthur. First Edition. Hardcover. First trade edition, octavo size, 111 pp., in a custom binding by Katharine Pountney. Near fine. One of the most beloved fairy tales of all time, "Sleeping Beauty" (sometimes titled "Little Briar Rose") was originally published by Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) in his "The Pentamerone" published posthumously in 1634, based on a tale of which our earliest traces date back to the 1330s or 1340s. Basile's version was later adapted and published by Charles Perrault in 1697, upon which the Brothers Grimm based their story. Therefore, when Charles Seddon Evans (1883-1944), of the publishing firm of William Heinemann, decided to edit the story to enable the inimitable Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) to have more text for his wonderful silhouette illustrations, he was going down a pathway already well-trodden. He described the feasts and discussed in detail the prince's attempts to prevent the evil spell, in order to make the story less violent and thus more acceptable to "modern" children and parents (n.b., from the "Quicklet on C.S. Evans's 'The Sleeping Beauty' " by Amber Larkins). While "Sleeping Beauty" only has one full-colour plate (the frontispiece), it is replete with Rackham's glorious silhouettes; with three double-page silhouette drawings with colour, two full-page silhouette drawings with colour, and six double and eight single-page silhouette drawings in black and white; it is also replete with in-text illustrations, and has lovely pictorial endpapers in green and white. HAHN, L. Albert.
Tübingen: Verlag von J. C. B. Mohr (Paul Siebeck), 1920. Octavo (234 x 151 mm). Contemporary brown half cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, patterned boards, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled black. Swedish banking library stamp of Aktiebolaget Svenska Handelsbanken Studiebiblioteket to title page, pencilled note to final page asserting the same, neat pencil annotations throughout showing evidence of close reading. Contents toned; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of "one of the most influential and certainly the most controversial book on monetary theory in the German language area" (Hagemann, p. 1). In challenging the orthodox view that credit represented a store of savings deposited with the banks by the public, Hahn (1889-1968) repositioned banks not simply as mediators between savers and investors but as creators of credit, setting forth the doctrine that "capital formation is not the result of saving but of the granting of credit". Schumpter recognises Hahn as the first to propose a complete theory of credit creation, but explains that "one reason why this book left so many economists unconvinced was, however, the fact that the theory of bank credit there presented was wedded to certain highly optimistic views about the possibility of achieving permanent prosperity, which prejudiced some economists against its essential achievement" (p. 1116). One of the most highly regarded economists and bankers in Germany before the Second World War, Hahn became best-known for his anti-Keynesian book of collected essays, The Economics of Illusion (1949). Little River Redwood Company [1920s], Crannell, CA. 14 5 by 7 inch sepia-tone photographs, most often seen as postcards. These larger-format images are quite uncommon. The promotional images document logging operations in the redwood forest north of Eureka, on the California coast. Crannell, the company town than supported the logging operation, no longer exists. Two of the views show logging camps (Camps 7 and 8); a third shows a logging railroad. Fine, or nearly so. Exposure a bit light, wiht minor silvering to the prints.

Democracy, the typical product of western civilization, will be wiped out by caesaren autocracy. The tremendous success of the book among the semi-literate, especially in Germany and America, during the period after the First World War, is a politico- sociological phenomenon that has nothing to do with the intrinsic merits or demerits of this 'new outlook on history and the philosophy of destiny', as the author himself described the aim of his book . The first volume (first published under another imprint in 1918), is here denoted the "dreiunddreissigste bis siebenundvierzigste völlig umgestaltete auflage," and the second "einundreissigste bis siebzigstes auflage einundfünfzigstes bis siebzigstes tausend." Director of the Sierra Club for 20 years from 1937 to 1957. Founder of the West Point Club. Namesake of the Sierra Club's Oliver Kehrlein Award for Outstanding Service to the Club's Outings Programs. . Nancy Buckley. Possibly the San Francisco poet, author of Cameos, Laughter & Longing, and Wings of Youth. Not confirmed. . . ARCHIVE: 1920's Typescripts prepared for submission with the by-line: Oliver Kehrlein & Nancy Buckley . Includes about seven (7) unique stories in various states from original draft to carbon typescript apparently ready for submission to publication. Also included are three (3) rejection letters, which probably explains why these went unpublished for many years. We're speculating that the stories represent fruits of a brief collaboration between Oliver Kehrlein and a professional writer, Nancy Buckley. . Stories feature well known Sierra Nevada locations: Hetch Hetchy Valley, Storm King, Mount Whitney, Lyell Canyon. Another story features Mt. Shasta. All the stories are fictionalized retellings of actual expeditions by the intrepid Sierra trailblazer Oliver Kehrlein, well known today for his creation of trails and support for back-country preservation, especially in California's Sierra Nevada. 1 13p. Matisse, Henri
Les Soins de l'Artiste, Paris, 1920. First edition of Matisse's classic self-produced suite of 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of his drawings of women. Quarto, original wrappers as issued, with an original frontispiece etching of a woman's face. One of only 1000 copies produced, this is number 908. Signed by Matisse below the original frontispiece etching, "Henri Matisse." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and in the original jacket. Matisse himself edited and printed this exquisite suite of 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of his drawings of women to accompany a 1920 exhibition of his work. "Daily painting sessions alternated with hours on end devoted to drawing, a corrective Matisse would use from now on whenever he felt his work was in danger of losing its balance between color and feeling on the one hand, and line and form on the other. He returned over and over again to a lace collar, drawing it first in minute detail until he had got it by heart and could translated it at will with two swift lines 'into an ornament, an arabesque, without losing the character of lace, and of that particular lace'. Matisse was evolving methods he would use for the rest of his life. He published fifty of these drawings in a portfolio called Cinquante Dessins to coincide with his exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. A surge of renewed energy pulses between the lines of the letters he wrote home as he drew them" (Spurling, 225-26). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Evans, C[harles] S[eddon]; Rackham, Arthur (Illustrations)
London: William Heinemann, (1920). Rackham, Arthur. First Edition. First trade edition, octavo size, 111 pp., in a custom binding by Katharine Pountney. In a custom binding by Katharine Pountney, wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stawell, Mrs. Rodolph; Dulac, Edmund (Illustrator)
London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, [1920]. Dulac, Edmund. Quarto size, 169 pp., 8 color plates. Reprint of the new and enlarged edition of 1913, this published in 1920 with the same title page (other than the imprint) and the same number of colour plates; what distinguishes this edition from that of 1913 is the elaborate publisher's trade binding. While the bottom of the front board depicts the elf "Drop-of-Crystal" at work, taken from the illustration facing p. 86, the upper portion of the front board is a fantasia of hanging fuschias in pinks and blues, with green leaves, all above billowing clouds outlined with gilt; one of the most stunning trade bindings we have seen. Per Hughey, upon publication the book was received most favourably: " 'Fairies I have Met' was reviewed in Outlook in its Literary Supplement of New Children's Books, November 9, 1907. The reviewer spoke of the book as 'charmingly illustrated in colour by Edmund Dulac.' It would be hard to disagree. The new and enlarged edition of 1913 was reviewed most favorably in Church Times and Spectator. With pictures here, Dulac displays a style much more humorous and whimsical than that of his illustrations for the Bronte novels 2 years earlier. The subjects are painted at close range, in deep colours, creating bolder designs and showing much detail, as opposed to the distant misty room or landscape scenery of the Bronte work." The illustrations here are a bit transitional, as Dulac's later work, such as "The Arabian Nights" and the "Rubaiyat", become even more detailed and exquisite. ___DESCRIPTION: Original r … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. Irish Fairy Tales Stephens Arthur Rackham Fine Leather Bayntun Binding. Found this at an estate sale, had a hard time finding anything about it. Saw the text on the second page and looked into it and saw another version that didn't quite look the same as this. This book has had* gilded page ends. Only the top of the pages are gilded now. When you open the book it looks like something was ripped off the cover page as there is still glue remains. I looked at other bonded books and that seems to be where they put signatures and whatnot. The pages are all still in great condition no writing or serious damage *just some discoloration near the ends of the pages, the binding/cover of the book has a few spots of damage as shown in the pictures. I looked to find a copyright date in the book and all I could find is 1920. This book didn't have a copyright date under it when it says copyright as shown in the photo. This is a really cool book.

Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fascicoli in folio (cm. 31,5). Anno XVII. Milano, 1920. BARBUSSE Henri
1920. Three hundred and twentieth thousand. 8vo., modern quarter brown morocco, original wrappers bound in. Paris, Ernest Flammarion. N.d. c. Inscribed by the author, ?A Madame von Winternitz-Zweig et aux femmes de coeur qui l'entourent [and to the courageous women who surround her] hommage dévoué Henri Barbusse? One of the greatest anti-war novels inscribed to Friderike Maria Winternitz Zweig, the first wife of Stefan Zweig, himself one of the most eloquent writers for peace in Europe. Friderike, who was indeed a femme de coeur, beautiful, strong-minded and intelligent, was already a writer when she met Stefan Zweig in 1908. By 1916 they were living together just outside Vienna, (in a diary entry for late 1916 Friderike writes: ?Today Stefan named me as his permanent 'top bunny'. I don't wish for anything more, and if he occasionally enjoys a subordinate bunny, that's fine by me . Just as long as I am always his top bunny?) and by 1919 were married, although in a bizarre detail of Austrian civil ceremony, Friderike did not have to be there at her own wedding, and sent a male representative instead. She continued her writing career as well as supporting him, for he was by choice incapable of doing much practical work. In the early 1930s he took up with his younger and less independent secretary (one wonders if Friderike would have lain down to die on the marital suicide bed in 1942, as did Lottie), and they were divorced in 1938. In 1917 Zweig published his Jeremiah, an explicitly pacifist play, dedicated to Friderike ?in profound gratitude?, and reviewed Le Feu in the Aust … [Click Below for Full Description]
