TUTTLE, Annie L.
New Haven, Connecticut, 1920. A collection of 13 notebooks filled with the manuscript writings of Annie L. Tuttle (nee Gribus), of New Haven, Connecticut dated between 1912-1920, filled with her poetry, short stories, songs, and recipes. String-tied and stapled in wrappers. Small quartos and octavos. Most between 40pp. and 122pp. Overall very good or better with wear at the extremities, scattered spots, and some page toning. They are accompanied by a copy of sheet music for "The Quinnipiac River," a song she composed the lyrics to, and was published in 1912. Tuttle (1885-1967) grew up in a family of six with Austrian immigrant parents who settled in Woodbridge, Connecticut before later moving the family to a farm in nearby Bethany. In one notebook she describes her life as the shy but precocious sister to three brothers, painting her face black with axle grease after seeing an African-American man for the first time, and later burying a man in the snow after finding him passed out one morning. It appears she may have left school early and there is some evidence in her writing of some clumsy spelling and strange phrasing. She describes a happy childhood, playing with siblings and dreaming up imaginary games with friends, until the sudden death of her favorite younger brother forced her to grow up. She married Willard W. Tuttle in 1906 at age 21. The notebooks, which are numbered 1-13, contain about 1,000 manuscript pages of poetry, short stories, and receipts, plus a 34-page memoir. Many of the pieces have notations that record when and to what periodical she submitted her w … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MANUSCRIPT - MYCOLOGY].
[French mycology manuscript]. [France, 1920?]. 34 parts. 8vo. With each described species illustrated in watercolour and pencil and on nearly all occasions also illustrating details and other stages of development. Each part sewn as a single quire without title-page, covered in a modern transparent paper. Unpublished, extensively illustrated taxonomic mycology manuscript covering 67 numbered genera of fungi found in France, each extensively described and with illustrations of numerous species (also numbered) of the relevant genus. The manuscript, made by an anonymous but evidently very knowledgeable author, covers species collected in France from 1874 to 1920. The information given for each species includes the scientific name, the common French name, a statement concerning its rarity, a detailed physical description and sometimes some comments on different varieties, the season and place in which it is more likely to be found, and the edibility, smell and taste. The descriptions are also often accompanied by a footnote on where and when the particular species was found.Although the text is nearly complete, some unfinished drawings and texts seem to suggest the author left the manuscript not quite finished. This end would likely be in 1920, the latest year reported for the discovery of a species. Although the species were collected over several decades, the manuscript appears to have been produced in a short period of time, without any major changes in style. A few occasional minor stains and thumbing, otherwise in very good condition.

1920. A treasure trove of 78 glass advertising slides for use in a Petersburg movie theater in the 1920's or 1930's. These would have been flashed up on the screen before and after the movie, and perhaps during the movie when the reels were being changed. They are rather crudely handpainted and lettered, adding to their local charms. "Tony's" on Sycamore Street "Known coast to coast for our home cooked and delicious meals"; "Bob White Ice Cream"; "Mann's Bread Served Exclusively at our Eating Booth" -- these are but a few of the many Petersburg businesses whose flickering names often with a painted image appeared on a Petersburg movie screen.

One of the pictures is labeled "Flinton Creek 1922" next to a page that says "The 4 Fishermen" with each of the fathers in the photo. [Diary] Katharine Shepard
Newberryport, MA, 1920. Standard Daily Journal in original blue cloth binding with title to front board. Containing 365 pages of daily entries plus 56 additional pages of notes, largely monthly expense accounts and recipes to be made. Documenting the life of Massachusetts nurse and women's club leader Katharine Shepard, this densely packed diary gives insight into the activities, ideas, and feelings of an active woman who, along with the female population of the U.S., had just obtained the right to vote.Everything about the present diary shows that Katharine was an active, intelligent, ambitious, and civically engaged individual. 45 years old at the time of this journal, she suffers no fools at work or in her clubs; and she values the balance she has accomplished between her intense work and activist commitments and self-care. Both front and rear pastedowns handle the overload of her notes on accounts, contacts, and recipes. Internally, she diligently documents all 365 days of her year. She discusses the nursing lesson plans, classes, students, and lectures she gives; she records and reflects on speaking appointments at the Roxbury Women's Club, Amherst College, Girls' City Club, and the Cambridge Women's Club; she keeps track of various bills and legislation she is in support of or wants to assist in banning in her state. As the presidential election nears, as expected, she has educated herself, chosen a side, and thrown her weight behind her candidate, attending a Republican rally in October and noting on November 2 that she has voted for the first time.In the midst of … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PAINTING]. ROUSSEAU, Henri-Émilien.
[Bedouin falconer].[Morocco, 1920s]. Oil on wooden panel (21 x 16 cm), signed at the lower left "Henri Rousseau". Contemporary gilded wooden frame (33 x 28 cm). Colourful panel painting by the leading orientalist painter Henri-Émilien Rousseau of a mounted Bedouin falconer, one of Rousseau's favourite subjects. While the sport of falconry was an important status symbol in the Middle East and Europe generally, for the Bedouins it was a means of survival.Rousseau (1875-1933) was a Cairo-born French painter who divided his childhood between North Africa and France, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under the great Orientalist painter, Jean-Léon Gérôme. He broke from the style of his master, however, and started to paint in a more impressionistic style. Between 1920 and 1930 he travelled extensively through the Rif and Atlas mountains of Morocco, where he befriended the chiefs of several nomad tribes. It was probably here that Rousseau fell under the spell of the Bedouin horsemen, which came to characterize his compositions. In 1927 more than 80 of his works from this period were displayed at the gallery of the influential Parisian art dealer Georges Petit. This was followed by an exhibition at the Exposition Universelle of 1931.The panel is cracked in the length, leading to a 4 cm crack in the paint to the right of the rider's head, a 1 cm crack below the horse's left hind hoof, and a 7 cm crack from the top left to the horse's head, but these cracks are only noticeable on close inspection and no paint has been lost. Some minor craquelure in the dark red patch conne … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. Photograph album of Reverend John B. Panfil and his sister Elsie Panfil, containing just over 500 original photographs taken during their extensive travels in 1920s Iraq and other parts of the Middle East. The pair were based in Mosul, but visited many small and remote settlements populated by Assyrian Christians and ethnic-minority Yazidis. Some of these places were seldom seen by westerners, and the Panfils' images-with captions identifying individuals and families by name-provide rare visual documentation of the people who lived there. Rev. Panfil was sent to Iraq as part of an Episcopal mission aimed at supporting and strengthening the ancient Assyrian Church of the East. In a letter written shortly after his arrival in Mosul, he wrote:: "I am working presently among the Assyrians; their church is the eldest one in Christendom. They have lost their country during the war and were massacred by the Turks and Kurds and are in need of the American help in order to exist. We are trying to revive their old church, their customs and their language." In the course of this work, Panfil traveled to meet with local church leaders, with whom he could work to build schools that would maintain Assyrian culture and traditions, educate young men for the priesthood, and provide humanitarian assistance when possible. He and Elsie (who seems to have been his constant companion) visited the Assyrian village of Bebadi (Dohuk Province) and nearby Amadia fortress; the Yazidi temple at Lalish; Dair Mar Elia (Saint Elijah's Monastery, believed to be the oldest Christian monastery in Ira … [Click Below for Full Description]

Diary] Katharine Shepard
Newberryport, MA, 1920. Standard Daily Journal in original blue cloth binding with title to front board. Containing 365 pages of daily entries plus 56 additional pages of notes, largely monthly expense accounts and recipes to be made. Documenting the life of Massachusetts nurse and women's club leader Katharine Shepard, this densely packed diary gives insight into the activities, ideas, and feelings of an active woman who, along with the female population of the U.S., had just obtained the right to vote. Everything about the present diary shows that Katharine was an active, intelligent, ambitious, and civically engaged individual. As the presidential election nears, as expected, she has educated herself, chosen a side, and thrown her weight behind her candidate, attending a Republican rally in October and noting on November 2 that she has voted for the first time. In the midst of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wisconsin, 1920. Oblong octavo. Measuring 11.5" x 7.25". String-tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" in gilt on top board. Very near fine, images with some occasional fading but overall well-composed and very good or better. Contains 327 gelatin silver images. Various sizes, are mostly some variation of 4.25" x 2.75". Most captioned in white album ink, some of the cations are rubbed, but they remain largely readable. Album maintained by a young Wisconsin woman documenting her school days, friends and travel. She was likely from Chilton, Wisconsin where the album begins in her later school years in 1917 and 1918, including shots of her girls' basketball team. Additionally there are groups of images from Appleton, Milwaukee, Menomonie, Oconto, Kaukauna, Peshtigo River, and Riverside, Wisconsin, where she traveled to visit relatives. There are a few images in Minnesota and in Escanaba, Michigan where she attended an Evangelist Revival Meeting. Additionally there are a few photos of uniformed men in France from 1918, sent from a school acquaintance or family member. It is likely she then taught grammar school children in Goodrich, Kansas, where she records images of young students, teachers, and others related to the school. One image near the end of the album is of the eight coffins of the Wolf Family who were murdered in 1920 in Turtle Lake, North Dakota. The image is a snapshot, but is a close variant of the images of the coffins that circulated in newspapers. A generous selection of vernacular photographs of young women that is mostly geographically specific to Wisconsin. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Panama Canal Zone and Chile, 1920. Folio. Measuring 12" x 14". Brown leather album with gilt and blind stamped decorations. Contains 274 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 5", with a few scattered captions. Album has a cracked front hinge, rubbing on the leather, and waviness thus good only with near fine photographs. A photo album kept during a cruise through the Panama Canal and down the coast of South America to Chile around 1920. The album begins with a trip through the Panama Canal which had officially opened in 1914. Photos of the deforested banks of the area, a few inland scenes, and nearby towns are seen in the section which shows travel through the canal. The mechanism of the canal can also be seen in amateur snapshots taken while the ship passed through. The trip continues down the coast of South America. Penciled captions appear on a few occasions identifying the cities of Pisco, Peru; Antofagasta, Chile; and Tocopilla, Chile. The photos from the various ports and cities visited show the local people of the town, with an emphasis on children, as well as the towns themselves. Here the people of South America are seen on horseback herding animals and shopping at the town markets. One photo shows a man on a dirt road, on the back of a donkey going into town. The changing infrastructure of the area can also be seen with photos of recently added railway stations and cars juxtaposed next to villagers who continued to use the traditional methods of transportation, such as the aforementioned donkey.
