Yezierska, Anzia
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1920. First edition of Anzia Yezierska's rare first book. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the Anzia Yezierska on the front free endpaper. Near fine with a trace of edge wear in a very good dust jacket with small chips and tears to the extremities. Rare signed and especially so in the original dust jacket. In stories that draw heavily on her own life, Anzia Yezierska portrays the immigrant's struggle to become a "real" American, in such stories as "Yekl," "Hunger," "The Fat of the Land," and "How I Found America." Set mostly in New York's Lower East Side, the stories brilliantly evoke the oppressive atmosphere of crowded streets and shabby tenements and lay bare the despair of families trapped in unspeakable poverty, working at demeaning jobs, and coping with the barely hidden prejudices of their new land. Rene Vincent
1920. This iconic poster of the Ramos-Pinto Company illustrated by Rene Vincent advertises the famous port wine featuring two lovers in profile leaning into one another with only a famous glass of the irresistible Porto Ramos between their lips. An anxious cupid awaits below with bow in hand, using the delicious drink as his arrow. This image is still very much associated with the company to the present date. René Vincent (1879-1936) was a French illustrator who was prevalent in the 1920s-1930s. He worked in an Art Deco style and became famous for his poster designs. Vincent had a design style of distorting perspective and dynamism. He was influential in the Art Deco movement in the period between the two world wars. Vincent studied at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts, at first he studied architecture, then changed to graphic arts and ceramics courses. He was also an illustrator for La Vie Parisienne, The Saturday Evening Post, L’Illustration and Fantiso, with most of his contributions to these magazines being fashion illustrations. He created many advertisements for Bugatti, Peugeot, Michelin, and Shell Oil Company. However, his most recognizable work is the circa 1920 Porto Ramos Pinto poster. Founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880, Casa Ramos Pinto became for noted its innovative marketing strategies. The company quickly became known for its continuous wine research and devotion to the packaging and promotion of the product. As a result of Ramos-Pinto’s ingenuity, the company quickly became responsible for half of the wine exported into South America. In 1990, the Casa Ramos Pin … [Click Below for Full Description]

A substantial collection of over 135 strip maps that delineate the principal automobile routes in California during the 1910s, published by the Automobile Club of Southern California. The cards are accompanied by a folding map index, which shows the overall chart of the routes in the state, with roads numbered to match the individual cards on which they appear. The routes depicted are particularly plentiful and thorough for the Los Angeles area and the region stretching east to San Bernardino and Redlands and south to Balboa and Laguna, but they provide direction for motorists throughout the state. The versos of many cards list hotels and garages officially approved by the Automobile Club which are noted on the maps themselves. The present group of maps is nearly complete, lacking eight cards for routes numbered on the index. We locate sizable collections of these maps, similar to the one present here, at Claremont, Berkeley, UC San Diego, and the University of Chicago. All are incomplete to some degree. A collection with approximately half the maps indexed is at Yale. A group of this size and near completeness is quite scarce.

CAPEK, Karel.
Prague: Vydalo Aventinum, 1920. Prague: Vydalo Aventinum,, 1920. The work that gave the world "robot" Octavo (209 x 140 mm). Recent brown cloth, titles in blue to spine, top edge yellow. Publisher's monogram (half-title) and title designed by Josef Capek. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, of Capek's dystopian sceince-fiction, which famously introduced the Czech word "robot - meaning 'serf' or 'drudge' - to the world, a word suggested by Capek's brother Josef. The play premiered in Prague on 25 January 1921 and was quickly followed by stagings in New York (1922) and London (1923). R.U.R. was issued by the progressive Prague publishing house of Aventinum, established by Otakar Štorch-Marien: "high-quality artistic layout, from covers to illustrations to typographics, was a hallmark of Aventinum books, even if they were mostly affordable paperbacks (Derek Sayer, The Coasts of Bohemia: A Czech History, Princeton UP 1998, p. 206). 2,000 copies were printed but representation in institutional libraries is decidedly thin: Library Hub lists British Library only; and WorldCat adds a further 12 copies internationally.

LeSesne, R. [Richard] H. [Habersham]
Daytona Beach, Florida: R. H. LeSesne, 1920. LeSesne, R. H.. 13 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches Haberle-tone (Orotone) in original gesso-decorated gilded frame. Original sealing paper backing, chip and torn, with the photographer's label "Haberle-tones / Are photographs made on glass instead of paper, which gives them a brilliancy and depth that cannot be obtained in the ordinary photograph. Haberle-tones are made only by R. H. LeSESNE, Daytona, Florida" affixed at the bottom edge. A few slight blemishes to the frame surface; otherwise, a very good example. (partial frame showing). Richard Habersham LeSesne, 1880 - 1948, was born in Clarkesville, Habersham County, Georgia and settled in Daytona, Florida by 1908,when he purchased the photographic studio of Henry Kaiser; he died there in 1946. His reputation as a photographer is primarily tied to the Daytona Beach Speedway where he documented the land speed record attempts from the 1920s through the 1930s. However, as Daytona Beach gained as a winter destination for those further north wanting warmer climes, he seemed to have established a market for his local landscapes, using the Orotone, or as he named them, Halberle-tones, the process made famous by Edward S. Curtis. In keeping with the similarity of appearance, LeSesne used the same "bat-wing" frames that Curtis popularized.

METROPOLITAN OPERA]. Gropper, William 1897-1977
1920. 508 x 380 mm. (20" x 15"). Unframed. Remnants of paper tape to upper margin of verso. Gropper, a social realist, was a pupil of George Bellows and Robert Henri. He was active in New York as a painter, lithographer, cartoonist, and illustrator. His work is held in New York by both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deeply involved in the radical politics of the 1920s and 30s, Gropper contributed to such left wing publications as The Revolutionary Age, The Liberator, The New Masses, The Worker, and The Morning Freiheit. He went on a tour of Soviet Russia with the novelists Sinclair Lewis and Theodore Dreiser in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution in 1927. During the second half of the 1930s, he dedicated his art to efforts to raise opposition to fascism in Europe. After visiting Eastern Europe in 1948, he decided to make one painting a year as a memorial to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gropper was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953. "The Metropolitan Opera said goodbye to its old house on April 16, 1966, with a sentimental gala farewell performance featuring nearly all of the company's current leading artists. The long time Met star soprano Zinka Milanov made her last Met appearance that night and among the many invited guests was soprano Anna Case who had made her debut at the house in 1909. The final performance at the opera house was given not by the Met but the Bolshoi Ballet, which concluded a short run of appearances on May 8, 1966...
