Wharton, Edith
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1920. Hard Cover. First Edition. Very Good. First edition, first printing, with "(1)" to last page of text. Publisher's red cloth, lettered in black to front board and spine. A very good copy, light rubbing to extremities and sunning to spine, one small tear (approx. 1 cm.) to spine head just touching the "A" in "Age", text block lightly toned, else very clean; lacking dust jacket. Overall, a tight, fresh copy. Garrison A30.1.aI. Originally published serially in the Pictorial Review in 1920, The Age of Innocence is Wharton's twelfth novel. Notably, The Age of Innocence won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, making it the first book by a female author to win the prestigious award. It tells the story of Newland Archer and his fiancé May Welland as they prepare for their upcoming marriage, a joyous occasion that is threatened by the appearance of the bride's dramatic cousin Countess Ellen Olenska. Like many of Wharton's novels, The Age of Innocence features the upper-class society of New York City in the 19th century. Although she moved to Paris in 1913 and spent much of the remainder of her life in France, Wharton notably continued to write about New York City and its social elite and drew much inspiration from her own childhood experiences living on Washington Square Park. Wharton revives some of this novel's characters, including Mrs. (Catherine) Manson Mingott, Sillerton Jackson, Mrs. Lemuel Struthers and Henry van der Luyden, in her 1924 set of novellas Old New York. TROYAT]. DREYFUS (M.).
Bergson me fascinait. Freud m'ouvrait un monde. J'étais également très attiré par la psychopathologie." Toute l'oeuvre à venir est en germe dans ces modestes cahiers, dont on comprend qu'ils aient été conservés par leu r rédacteur. Son bac en poche, il écrivait son premier récit, "La Clef de voûte", début d'une très longue carrière à succès... On joint : Troyat, Henri. Christie, Agatha
Rare signed photograph of the novelist Agatha Christie. The photograph was taken in the 1920s. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 10.75 inches by 12.5 inches. Rare and desirable. Agatha Christie was an English writer and known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Christie also wrote the world's longest-running play, a murder mystery, The Mousetrap, and six romances under the name Mary Westmacott. In 1971 she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her contribution to literature. She was initially an unsuccessful writer with six rejections, but this changed when The Mysterious Affair at Styles, featuring Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920. During the Second World War she worked as a pharmacy assistant at University College Hospital, London, during the Blitz and acquired a good knowledge of poisons which featured in many of her subsequent novels. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time. Her novels have sold roughly 2 billion copies, and her estate claims that her works come third in the rankings of the world's most-widely published books, behind only Shakespeare's works and the Bible. According to Index Translationum, she remains the most-translated individual author - having been translated into at least 103 languages. And Then There Were None is Christie's best-selling novel, with 100 million sales to date, making it the world's best-selling mystery ever, and one of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SOUPAULT, Philippe and CHAGALL, Marc
Paris: Au Sans Pareil, 1920. 1 of 9 copies on Japon Imperial paper, Copy No. IV. Softcover. VG or better, glassine jacket with minor chipping, few tiny tears no significant loss (microscopic at best). Printed opversize wraps with glassine jacket. Half-title. Title-page with woodcut vignette, and 4 woodcut illustrations by Marc Chagall. (48) pp. Among Marc Chagall's earliest book illustrations, preceded only by appearances in 1914 and 1918. With Andre Breton, Soupault was one of the founders of the Surrealist movement: "Soupault's earliest verse collection, 'Aquarium' (1917), was published with the help of Guillaume Apollinaire, who introduced Soupault to André Breton. In 1919 Soupault, Breton, and Louis Aragon cofounded the review 'Littérature'. Originally drawn to the antirationalism of the Dada movement, Soupault soon rejected its nihilism, and he and Breton experimented with other revolutionary techniques. One result of their experimentation was the "automatic writing" of the jointly authored 'Les Champs magnétiques' (1920; 'The Magnetic Fields'), known as the first major Surrealist work. Soupault soon abandoned automatic writing to produce carefully crafted verses such as those in 'Westwego' (1922) and 'Georgia' (1926). As the Surrealist movement became increasingly dogmatic and political, Soupault grew dissatisfied with it and eventually broke with it and Breton" (Encyclopedia Britannica online). SOUPAULT, Philippe and CHAGALL, Marc
Paris: Au Sans Pareil, 1920. 1 of 9 copies on Japon Imperial paper, Copy No. IV. Exceptionally rare, one of 9 such copies. VG or better, glassine jacket with minor chipping, few tiny tears no significant loss (microscopic at best).

1920. Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Hankow, Kelly & Walsh, Limited, 1922. 8vo. Original orange cloth, lettered in black, image of pagoda blocked in gilt on front cover, original dust-wrapper printed in orange and black; pp. [2], x, [4], 523, highly illustrated with plates after photographs and folding plans, wrappers with small flaws at head and tail of spine, light offsetting from endpapers, a few light spots here and there, otherwise a very beautiful copy with the rarely seen wrappers. Second edition (first, 1920), considerably enlarged and revised. The writer Juliet Bredon (c. 1881-1937) was the daughter of Sir Robert Edward Bredon, Bt (1846-1918), Deputy Inspector-General Imperial Maritime Customs, China, (1898-1908). In her preface, Bredon explains that, 'Several books have been written about Peking by foreigners, but among these only two are comprehensive - Monseigneur Favier's monumental work Peking and Father Hyacinth Bitchurin's Description of Peking. This paucity of accurate accounts is chiefly due to the obstacles in the way of collecting precise information. The more one studies the fascinating old city, the more one realises the tantalising difficulties of learning, even from the Chinese themselves, anything but the merest outline of its history and monuments. A proper appreciation of Peking is not, I believe, in the power of a Westerner to give - certainly not of one single person - since it pre-supposes a thorough knowledge of China's past, an infinite sympathy with Chinese character and religions, an intimate sympathy with Chinese character and religions, … [Click Below for Full Description]

The caption on the front of the card identifies it as by “Kurt Schwitter’s.” Like “Der Lustgalgen,” “Die Kultpumpe” (The Cult Pump) is from a series of constructions which were Schwitters’ first ventures into sculpture. All of them were destroyed; this is one of six known through photographs. Unused. A fine example.
