[African Voodoo.] Von Hoffman, Carl
Pacific & Atlantic Photos, 1920. Good. Original silver gelatin print, measuring 24 cm x 16.5 cm (9.5 in x 6.5 in). With Pacific & Atlantic Photos rubber stamp on verso, along with a lengthy holograph caption in blue pencil: "HOF 221287 / copyright by Carl von Hoffman from P&A / The Voodoo belief among African natives / The bewitched natives drink water with voodoo gods blessing. They then vomit it and the bad spirits leave them. This is forbidden by the white man in Africa and is a prison offense. The photographer came upon this group in a bush by the river by chance." Mild rippling, rubber stamp faded on verso. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH PRINT BY A CELEBRATED CHRONICLER OF AFRICAN VOODOO. Fine image by Carl von Hoffman (1889-1982) documenting a voodoo ritual in Zululand. Von Hoffman was a soldier in the Russo-Japanese War, an adventurer, author, and photographer. In 1924, von Hoffman was solicited to participate in a trek from Cairo to Capetown, during which time this photograph was most likely taken, and which inspired a return trip shortly thereafter to what was then Rhodesia. His second visit allowed him to study in detail the religious rites and customs of a single African tribe, providing his research material for "Jungle Gods." In "As Told at The Explorers Club: More than Fifty Gripping Tales of Adventure," von Hoffman describes a love potion gone wrong, the ritual cure being part of the subject of this photograph. The published account reads: "It turned out that the witch doctor was Lucas M'Zungu, a great Voodoo doctor, a combination of witch and witch doctor with a s … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Oklahoma]
[Oklahoma City?]: Southwestern Bell Telephone Co, 1920. Very good.. [36]pp. Original printed card covers, stapled. Light wear and soiling, especially to lower corner. Small tape reinforcement to rear lower corner. Some minor foxing to contents. An early telephone directory for the little Oklahoma town of McAlester -- the largest town inside the Choctaw Nation -- published little more than a decade after Oklahoma statehood. The directory provides a single alphabetical listing of residences and businesses, noting address as well as phone number. Residences are denoted as such, and interestingly numbers outside of town are also indicated as "rural," with addresses such as "NW of city." With numerous advertisements for local businesses, including an ad for a local company bottling spring water (delightfully described as "absolutely sanitary"). We locate two serial records in OCLC, at the Mid-Continent Public Library in Missouri and at Stillwater Public Library in Kansas -- neither has any directories from before the 1950s. Rare.

1920s-1950s. A collection of 110 different get well cards, predominantly for children and dating from the 1930s to the 1950s with others 1910 to 2000. A majority of the cards in this collection are light-hearted in nature and intended to “cheer-up” the recipient. Selected from a 30 plus year extensive collection of greeting cards, the get-well cards are among the most creative and entertaining. Common threads are humor and depicting people or anthropomorphic animals being cheerful and experiencing improved wellness. Condition is generally very good, many are signed. Some with tape marks and light corner bends. Overall, an interesting representation of socially acceptable means of dealing with illness at the time. To view the details on the collection click HERE

Minimal rubbing to corners, still an an exceptionally fine example of a very rare edition. Ronald Egerton Balfour (1896-1941). The work of this illustrator is not as well-known as it should be - most likely because this 1920 edition of the Rubáiyát is his sole major work according to a recent feature in Book & Magazine Collector. The illustrations were produced when he was just twenty-four years old and while the drawing can be considered uncertain in places, they are really splendid examples of the post-Beardsley and later Alastair style, owing far more to Beardsley flourishes and details than to … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAULANA SHAUKAT ALI, (Indian muslim leader of the Khilafat Movement), (1873-1938).
Pakistan: Chawkar Shali' Chawli, 1920. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (18 x 13 cm). In Urdu. 12 p. Lithography. Ali was an Indian Muslim leader of the Khilafat Movement that erupted in response to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. He was the elder brother of the renowned political leader Mohammad Ali Jouhar. Shaukat Ali was born in 1873 in Rampur state in what is today Uttar Pradesh in India but later played role in partition of India on religious lines. He was educated at the Aligarh Muslim University. He was extremely fond of playing cricket, captaining the university team. Shaukat Ali helped his younger brother Mohammad Ali Jouhar publish the Urdu weekly Hamdard and the English weekly Comrade. In 1915 he published an article which said Turks were right to fight the British. These two weekly magazines played a key role in shaping the political policy of Muslim India back then. In 1919, while jailed for publishing what the British charged as seditious materials and organizing protests, he was elected as the last president of the Khilafat conference. He was re-arrested and imprisoned from 1921 to 1923 for his support to Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress during the Non-Cooperation Movement (1919-1922). His fans accorded him and his brother the title of Maulana. In March 1922, he was in Rajkot jail and was later released in 1923. While still a supporter of Congress and its non-violent ethos, Ali even surpassed some of his colleagues in also providing support to the revolutionary independence movement. Publisher's quarter black buckram over straw textured cloth beveled boards, front cover and spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. The illustrations were produced when he was just twenty-four years old and while the drawing can be considered uncertain in places, they are really splendid examples of the post-Beardsley and later Alastair style, owing far more to Beardsley flourishes and details than to the usu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Texas]. [Oil]
Fort Worth: Standard Blue Print Map & Eng. Co, 1920. Very good.. Folding map, 18 x 18.25 inches, plus small broadside form, completed in manuscript. Contemporary annotation in color pencil. Very light wear along folds. A rare, detailed Texas oil map, produced by a Fort Worth firm just after World War I. The map shows the distribution of oil wells and derricks across the state in 1920, prints the names of the most prominent oil fields, and also shows the types of soil and rock encountered throughout Texas counties, with a legend of abbreviations for each at bottom right. The whole is somewhat crowded in places, but still quite attractive and legible, and is a good encapsulation of the rapidly developing oil industry in Texas at this time. Contemporary advertisements for the publisher of this map, Standard Blue Print Map and Engineering, promote the availability of over 200 oil maps of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas from the firm. The present copy is accompanied by a certificate, completed in manuscript, from the Gillespie County Development Company that assigns a half-acre interest in its oil and gas lease to a Gus Kassebaum of Plymouth, Wisconsin, "in consideration for the services and other valuable consideration rendered." On the map, Gillespie County is outlined in manuscript, and a dot and large arrow mark the location of this oil development near the county seat of Fredericksburg. Rare, we locate copies only of a variant issue of the map, at Denver Public Library, the Colorado School of Mines, and SMU.

Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) Romancier.

Stockholm: nd [1920]. Stockholm:, nd [1920].. First edition. Near Fine. A bold and handsome large format original early twentieth century color-printed lithograph; untrimmed and unmounted. (28 x 39.25 inches). Near Fine Condition. Minor edge tears with small paper loss to right edge. Origin mark 'Printed in Sweden' stamped on verso. This boldly colored scientific illustration is a large scale lithograph printed in four colors and displays detailed views of a) yellow-toned lichen growing on a section of wood, along with microscopic view of the cell structure. b) browned spots on leaves, with microscopic view of cell structure and c) brown and yellow toning on sword leaf, with detailed view of cell structure. Not suffering from want of attribution to either artist or publisher, this bold modernist graphic was acquired as one of a collection of botanical, zoological and scientific wall charts produced in Copenhagen and Stockholm from the early twentieth century as school wall charts or teaching aids. Due to the finely detailed molecular cell structure represented, this highly likely illustrates the discoveries of noted plant pathologist Professor Jakob Eriksson (Hyllie, Sweden 1848-1931). And, due to quality of the paper and style of printing this fine piece was quite likely printed by Bengtsons Litografiska, Stockholm. single sheet

[DIORAMAS]. 'Arthur Holmes' Box of... 'Arthur Holmes' Box of Delights' ... 'Arthur Holmes' Box of Delights' [Twelve hand-painted wooden dioramas depicting hunting, shooting and fishing scenes]. 1920.A collection, complete in all its parts, of 12 individual hand-crafted, and numbered, three-dimensional landscaped scenes, or dioramas (all bases 163 x 95 x 10mm; the tallest insert 220mm), which are hand-painted throughout on all visible surfaces (including the oval bases, and sides) and composed of multi-layered scenery and characters which slot into the base together with exquisite detachable fishing rods with twine, floats and bait, landing birds, and even an angler's satchel with leather strap; the whole fashioned in wood and featuring a series of figures (adults and children) engaged in traditional rural pursuits of hunting, shooting and fishing; each signed on the base, in ink, by the maker Arthur Holmes, numbered, and dated 1920 throughout; all contained within a carefully constructed custom-made wooden slatted and lidded box with metal clasp (no longer functioning) and including internal compartments and trays with leather lifting tabs configured with outlines to indicate the storage plan. This lovingly, and painstakingly, hand-crafted personal artefact is testament to the great skill and patience of the creator and is a beautiful production that would not look out of place in a museum. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking.
