First edition, first printing. Published by Chatto & Windus in 1920. Good+ condition overall. Short inscription on front endpaper; no other markings of any kind. Frontis photo well preserved and tissue guard is intact with some slight creasing visible, though it has tanned rather heavily and has likewise caused offsetting to title page. Heavy offsetting to the introduction/preface pages from a bookmark or clipping that had previously been laid in. Pages themselves are bright with toning to page edges and front and rear endpages. Binding is firm, though there is evidence of repair to front hinge - it's quite sturdy now but was separating at one point. Similarly, there was separation of cloth at spine which has been repaired, though there is still some fraying towards the bottom. Externally, paper label on spine is somewhat chipped/discolored. Boards are moderately worn/rubbed with fading away from the center. Bottom corner is bumped. Please see photos. First edition, first printing. Published by Chatto & Windus in 1920. WHITMAN, Jr., John Franklin
1920. Very Good. A collection of 13 original gouache paintings on paper, each measuring 12" x 16.25", mounted onto artist's boards (15" x 20"). One painting (of Lewis and Clark) has been neatly removed from the board (not present), modest rubbing and some scattered light glue stains at the margins of a few boards, one painting (of Andrew Jackson) with a few light scratches, overall very good or better. A very bright and attractive set of undated portrait paintings, most likely painted by J. Franklin Whitman as illustrations for a book or magazine. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Whitman attended both the Art Students League and the Metropolitan School of Art in New York. By 1920 he had set up Whitman Studios in Philadelphia. He is best known today for his historical book illustrations, a famous May 1928 *Vanity Fair* cover, and for his powerful series of posters which he designed and painted for the American Red Cross War Fund in 1943 and 1944. A compelling suite of 13 early paintings from Whitman's career, featuring portraits of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, James Monroe, and several other celebrated Revolutionary War military leaders: Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, Benjamin Lincoln, Daniel Morgan, Horatio Lloyd Gates, Marquis de Lafayette, and Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. Also included are portraits of Andrew Jackson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, and America's Grand Old Man of the Army: Winfield Scott, also known as "Old Fuss and Feathers."

Russische Avantgarde. - Blok, Alexandre
Paris, La Cible, 1920. 24 unpag. Bll. Mit 7 mont. Abb. nach Zeichnungen von Mikhail Larionov. 4°, Orig.-Karton. [Click Below for Full Description]

Mel'nik, Tat'iana Evgen'evna (Botkina, 1899-1986)
self-published, Harbin, 1920. First Edition. Octavo (22.5 × 15 cm). Original printed wrappers; 98, [1] pp. Very good. First edition of this early memoir of the Tsar and his relatives, by the daughter of their physician, Evgenii Sergeevich Botkin (1865-1918), who was murdered along with the Imperial Family in Ekaterinburg. Mel'nik claims to follow no political aims, but wishes to correct the slanderous accounts of the Imperial Family common among many émigrés. This copy likely from the collection of Petr Sergeevich Botkin (18??-1933), son of the physician of Tsar Alexander II and brother of the physician of Nicholas II, and the author's uncle. Mel'nik, Tat'iana Evgen'evna (Botkina, 1899-1986)
Harbin: self-published, 1920. Botkin served as secretary of the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC, emissary to Portugal and Marocco. With the handwritten note "P. Botkinu" on the front wrapper, suggesting the book belonged to or was intended for Petr Botkin, perhaps in memory of his brother. A second edition was published in Belgrade in 1921; the first edition is very scarce. Savine 02202.

Okamoto Ippei, Maekawa Sempan, Hiratsuka Un'ichi
1920. 19. Okamoto Ippei, Maekawa Sempan, Hiratsuka Un'ichi, et al. TÔKAIDÔ GOJÛSAN-SUGI MANGA EMAKI. Jo Ge. Two scrolls, each over 30 feet long and 10" high. The scroll set was done in some 250 to 300 copies by 18 members of the Tokyo Manga Association, each set hand-painted. It would appear that the trip upon which the set was based took place in 1920-21 and the paintings must have been finished soon after. The inventory of artists involved include some famous names: Mizushima Nihou, Kondo Koichiro, Ippei, Sempan & Un'ichi, among others. The Great Earthquake must have destroyed quite a few and the war many more. Now the set appears infrequently in the market. Our copy has some creasing to the interior of each scroll and minor foxing that often appears in copies of this work, but, overall, it is clean and quite well painted. A very nice example this genre of hand-painted multiples. In the original inscribed wooden box.

[Praha]: Aventinum, 1920.. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-96 [97] [98: blank] [99: colophon] [100: blank], original decorated lavender wrappers, printed in brown and black, all edges untrimmed. First edition. 2000 copies printed. "This play was first performed in 1921 in Prague and has since that time been translated and performed through the world. The word robot which Josef Capek coined for the play, based on the Czech word robota, 'forced labor,' has become a part of most modern languages." - Lewis, Utopian Literature, pp. 38-9. "Destined to be Capek's greatest popular success, it was soon translated and played in almost all the civilized countries of the world and became one of the most widely performed plays of the century. Such a phenomenon was quite unparalleled in Czech literature, and Capek was hailed as the outstanding Czech writer of his generation." - Harkins, Karel Capek (1962), p. 9 R.U.R. came at the beginning of the 1920s, Capek's most productive decade for writing fantastic literature, and it was to be followed in short order by The Makropoulos Secret, The Absolute at Large, War with the Newts and Krakatit (the appearance of these works in English translations was spread over a longer period of time). For those who have not read R.U.R., it may be tempting to think of it as a sermon against technology. But it is no such simple thing. It is instead a rich and complex meditation on the nature of humanity, mixing comedy with drama, expressionism with realism, and truth with counter-truth (in a kind of "literary cubism") in such a way as to stimulate a great variety of i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Good. Broadsides. An archive of eight broadsides featuring wrestling matches taking place in Oklahoma and Kansas in the 1920s. All broadsides, except one, feature Charles Loomis of Ringwood, Oklahoma. All are previously unrecorded. Broadsides measure between 6" x 8 ½" and 13" x 23". All have bold black lettering and many have b&w images of the wrestlers. Overall in good condition. Most broadsides are moderately toned and creased, and have minor chipping affecting margins; a few have heavy chipping, affecting content. All broadsides state the date, time and wrestlers involved. Charles Loomis was a well-known wrestler in Fairview and Major counties Oklahoma, and some of his opponents were Victor Howard, Indian Evans, Adam Mauch, Allen Black, and Bob Farrington. Only one broadside doesn't feature Loomis, featuring wrestlers Jack Fisher and Jack Gorman. Locations for matches include Cleo, Canton, Fairview and Vici, Oklahoma, and Harper and Cunningham, Kansas. All broadsides also have a description of the wrestlers or an attention-grabber at the end. Descriptions are along the lines of: "Mauch is one of the best light heavyweight wrestlers in Kansas…Loomis has never been beat by a man of his weight, and needs no introduction to the people here," "All lovers of good clean athletic sports should see this match," and "Victor Howard is a hard nut to crack." The closing notes at the end of many of the broadsides are simple and succinct, such as "The best match ever staged in Cunningham" and "Ladies invited to attend. Come." Featuring a local of Ringwood, O … [Click Below for Full Description]
