Jennings, H. H
for City of Bradford, Technical College, Dept. of Textile, 1920. Folio (approx. 13¼" x 9½"), pp. [74]; manuscript text in a cursive hand on ruled paper, including 18 leaves of hand-drawn color diagrams, several diagrams showing the set-up of a loom, 54 tipped-in fabric samples on card stock, contained in a two-ring binder with ownership signature and title on front pastedown, Bradford Technical College Stamps on rear pastedown, and with a professor's signature approving the manuscript; moderately worn, some chipping and soiling to the fore-edges, some soiling to end leaves. A cotton-, silk-, and wool-weaving manuscript made by a student, with numerous tipped-in samples, hand-drawn and lettered colored diagrams throughout. A remarkable artifact showing the training a weaver received at the Bradford Technical College. These course books were judged on completeness and the aspiring weaver's skill in presenting the details about the instruction, as well as their abilities to illustrate and accurately portray the production of (in this case) rather stunning cotton, silk, and woolen fabrics. The manuscript details the instructions for preparing the loom, and weaving diagrams for producing embossed fabrics, silk neckwear and men's ties, gauze and lace weaving, silk laces, tapestry weaving, muslins, madras muslins, machine- and hand-woven carpets - all of them with tipped-in fabric samples showing the resulting product. The beautifully executed color diagrams and illustrations show an aspiring weaver's professional abilities. The lettering demonstrates a decidedly pre-War Arts & Cr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hubbard, Father
ca. 1920-1962. Unbound photo album, measuring 18" by 12". Black card paper. Approximately 1,212 black and white photographs of various sizes. Most of the photographs have a number assigned to them, written on the album paper in white chalk pencil. Photographs are fixed to the album pages with glue. The photographs' subjects vary, but many include portraits of Hubbard in various locations throughout Alaska, as well as the local people he met on his travels and his dogs. The images are all in fine condition and vary in size from 2.5 X 2.5 inches to 8 X 10 inches with a majority being 3.25 X 4.5 inches. A small (6" X 10") colour hand-out from one of Father Hubbard's lectures at the University of Santa Clara is also included. The provenance of this album is currently unknown, but many of the photographs are the same as the ones currently held in the collection of the archives at the University of Santa Clara, with some exceptions. The numbers assigned to the photographs do not match the ones held in the Santa Clara collection, and those photographs came directly from Father Hubbard himself. There are also several photographs that seem to have belonged to the American inventor George W. Bettes. Bettes invented a machine that painted the lines on highways, as well as a "snow machine" for the American Army in the late 1930s. He later donated one these snow machines to Father Hubbard for one of his Alaskan expeditions, as well as one to Lt. Commander Bursey for his expedition to the "Little America" exploration site on Antarctica. There are several photographs in this collection of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Massachusetts and Connecticut, 1920. Two volumes. Large oblong quartos. Measuring 12" x 9.5". String-tied black cloth over paper boards. The two volumes contains 325 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3" x 4" and 3.5" x 5.75", some with captions on the verso. Very good photo album with some tears with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a New England family during the first half of the 1920s. From the few captions it appears that many of the photos were taken in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The majority of the photos are taken on the seaside during a number of summers. These photos show the family in bathing costumes of the era playing on the beach and swimming. One photo shows two women lounging in the sand with a parasol. Most of the photos are candid snapshots and catch family and friends in the midst of conversation and games, such as an action shot of a game of leap frog. The New England coast is captured in lovely amateur snaps of seaside towns and crowds of people on the beaches, including West Haven Beach in Connecticut. Along with the vacation photos there are numerous shots of neighborhoods and family homes in different seasons. Some show a group of men working on the road in May with large swathes of the street torn up so that a track can be laid down, possibly for a trolley or streetcar. Another selection of photos show houses in winter covered in snow with views of barren trees lining the streets. There are also photos of a city taken looking down on the buildings from one of the taller buildings, showing bust … [Click Below for Full Description]

McSWINEY, Terence)
Printer Burgess, London, 1920. Souvenir broadside or napkin. Approximately 13.5" x 13.5". Printed in black and purple on thin Japanese paper or tissue. Contemporarily mounted on buff-colored cardstock. Slight bleedthrough from the glue used in mounting, near fine. A commemoration of the death due to a hunger strike by the Sinn Fein Mayor of Cork, giving the order of the funereal procession. McSwiney was an Irish playwright, poet and pamphleteer. A leader of the Irish Nationalists in Kerry and Cork, he was arrested in Cork for possession of seditious articles and documents, while serving as Mayor. He immediately went on a hunger strike. His death focused world attention on the Irish Question, and his processions in both London and Cork drew huge crowds. Souvenir napkins survive to some degree, but seldom in nice condition, because of the thin material and they were usually stored folded. We acquired a few napkins where the owner had the forethought to mount them, probably almost immediately.

The school offered a rigorous three-year training program with classes taught by experienced nurses and by professors from the nearby College of Physicians & Surgeons. The school quickly drew large numbers of applicants, and a much-needed dormitory-like home was constructed that offered "more than 100 sleeping rooms which are well lighted and ventilated, spacious parlors, library, lecture room, study and recreation halls" (Costello, Sisters of Mercy of Maryland). Some of the images in this album appear to show parts of the nurses' home (a courtyard, parlor, and dining room), while others show nursing student in the classroom, learning to make a hospital bed, assisting during surgery, working in the pharmacy and the kitchen, tending babies in the maternity ward, and ministering to the sick and wounded in wards and in patient rooms. Of particular interest are the images from classrooms illustrating not only the teaching aids on the walls but the furniture and overall environment in which the nurses learn and train as well a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brod, Max, Schriftsteller (1884-1968).
Prag, Brehová 8, 23. VI. (1920), Kl.-4° (18,5 x 14 cm). 2 Seiten. Doppelblatt. Gewicht (Gramm): 20 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

London: George Allen & Unwin, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed by Dos Passos on the Front flyleaf, with also, glued to the second (blank) flyleaf, is an 11-line handwritten letter to the same collector agreeing to sign some of his books, and instructing him where & when to send them (in Provincetown). The book itself is a fine copy, and apart from one small edge-tear to the fore-edge of page 19/20, and some light fading to the spine edges, has almost no wear. This is thanks to a beautiful copy of the original dust-jacket, which has only the slightest wear to the extremities, but is otherwise bright and intact. This is the first issue of the book, with the word "flat" obliterated on line 32 of page 35. Highly desirable copy of this highspot - Dos Passos' first book - based on his experiences in the Great War. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Nilus, Serge; [Brasol, Boris (ed)]
Small, Maynard & Company Publishers, Boston, 1920. An extraordinary copy of this, the first American edition of what are now more commonly known as the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. Affixed to front endpaper are four fascinating news clippings, dated October 30, 1934 through May 14, 1935, describing developments in the legal action brought against the Swiss National-Socialist League by the Union of Swiss Jewish Communities and the Jewish community in Berne, aimed at disproving the authenticity of this work. This case began in November 1933 and lasted until May 14th, 1935. [4], 149 pp. Part One includes an eight-page introductory statement and a three-page summary of the Protocols, followed by the XXIV Protocols. Part Two begins on page 74 and provides evidence as to the origin and authenticity of the Protocols, an examination of parallelism between the Protocols and Jewish writings, and evidence of parallelism between the Protocols and certain activities of the Jews outside Russia. Prior owner pencilled his/her instructions how to best read this book upon verso of half-title. Pencilled marginal markings and occasional marginalia or markings within text to approximatly half the book. Hairline opening to binding at page 91. Moderate wear to publisher's dark blue cloth. 1920. This is a collection of 340 gelatin silver prints, in 5 x 7 format, of a safari undertaken by an American or small group of American men, probably in the 1920s. The photographs are no longer in any particular order, but through them we can trace the progress of the Great White Hunters from the Statue of Liberty, through the Suez Canal, down the Red Sea to Mombasa Kenya, up to Nairobi, then into the Serengeti on a hunting expedition organized by a travel company called Safariland. One was a bespectacled, jowly fellow, who appears in photographs taken at many different locations. Another, who is pictured standing triumphantly over his kills, sported elaborate mustachios. There are also dozens of photos of street life and buildings in African cities and villages (as well as several scenes from Genoa, Italy, where the Great White Hunters apparently stopped enroute to Africa - probably via the Cunard liner "Berengaria" which is pictured here.) About 150 photographs document the slaughter that marked the climax of the expedition. The Great White Hunters and African bearers pose with zebra, African buffalo, various species of African antelope, cheetah, rhino, game birds, and smaller game. One particularly horrific series of 22 photos documents the killing and dismemberment of an elephant, the Great White Hunters proudly pose at the end with two sets of tusks. Only two of the photos contain any clues as to the men's identity. One is an image of the American sculptor Frank Tolles Chamberlain inscribed to a "Mr. Lincoln." The second is a print measuring 6 x 2 1/2 inches (the on … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHITMAN, Jr., John Franklin
1920. A collection of 13 original gouache paintings on paper, each measuring 12" x 16.25", mounted onto artist's boards (15" x 20"). One painting (of Lewis and Clark) has been neatly removed from the board (not present), modest rubbing and some scattered light glue stains at the margins of a few boards, one painting (of Andrew Jackson) with a few light scratches, overall very good or better. A very bright and attractive set of undated portrait paintings, most likely painted by J. Franklin Whitman as illustrations for a book or magazine. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Whitman attended both the Art Students League and the Metropolitan School of Art in New York. By 1920 he had set up Whitman Studios in Philadelphia. He is best known today for his historical book illustrations, a famous May 1928 *Vanity Fair* cover, and for his powerful series of posters which he designed and painted for the American Red Cross War Fund in 1943 and 1944. A compelling suite of 13 early paintings from Whitman's career, featuring portraits of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, James Monroe, and several other celebrated Revolutionary War military leaders: Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, Benjamin Lincoln, Daniel Morgan, Horatio Lloyd Gates, Marquis de Lafayette, and Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. Also included are portraits of Andrew Jackson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, and America's Grand Old Man of the Army: Winfield Scott, also known as "Old Fuss and Feathers."
