MARGA [GIL ROËSSET, Marga, illustrator]. Consuelo GIL ROËSSET.
Madrid: Mateu, 1920. Folio (330 × 225 mm), pp. 47, [1]. Illustrations throughout, including 8 full page, in black and yellow, by Marga. Evenly browned, due to paper quality. Rough trimmed in original decorative wrappers with flaps, traces of blue silk ties now absent. Rubbed, with small imperfections to spine (slight loss), but actually a good copy of a fragile book printed on indifferent paper stock. First edition, the first published work of Marga Gil Roësset (b. 1908) then aged twelve. Marga's talent was astonishingly precocious, and her compositions for this fairy tale by her sister, Consuelo, combine vestiges of a distinctive Spanish art nouveau with a troubling, dreamlike quality entirely her own. Born into a cultivated and talented family, she became dangerously ill as a child, manifestly influencing some of these extraordinary illustrations. She published further illustrations before becoming a sculptor and exhibiting at the Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti a Madrid in 1932 as one of the most promising artists of her generation. She had, however, become infatuated with the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez (who was married) and committed suicide in 1932, having destroyed most of her work and presented her manuscript diary to Jiménez on the day of her death (it has recently been published). PROTHEROE, Ernest] [artist uncredited
not published, 1920. 17pp. typescript, plus one original painting and five ink sketches/drawings. Typescript in very good condition on onion skin paper, with some crner creases, but overall quite well-preserved. Painting in excellent condition, protected by an onionskin cover, and drawings mostly in excellent condition; a few taps to some corners. 17pp. typescript with some pencil hand-corrections for what appears to be a chapter in one volume of the "Budge and Betty" children's book series, authored by Ernest Protheroe. The typescript has a few corrections on each leaf. There are some maquettes or final pen and ink drawings which depict illustrations of various sized and shapes which were to be used in the book. There are pencil notations with locations for the illustrations, which vary wildly, so we presume that these illustrations may be for the whole book, and not just the single chapter whose typescript is presently included. Most arresting is the vibrant watercolor painting, which measures about 7.5" x 11", and is in a very "final" state, with great detail. Some extra leaves depict these same drawings and the painting, and appear to be proofs for the final illustrations which were likely used in the book. Since there is no title that exactly matches the title of the typescript, we are not 100% sure in which published book these original works ultimately appeared. In any event, a very nice grouping of original art and working text, fit for any great collection of book illustration or children's books.

Still reasonably clean with no major stains. Overall the contents are in good or better condition. Ca. 1915 photograph album dedicated solely to theatre actors and actresses in the St. Louis area, ca. 1915. The photographs are mostly credited to "Murillo" and "Gerhard Sisters", both St. Louis firms of the period. Each photograph has a pencilled caption with the actor's name (a bit hard to read on the brown paper, but all are legible). Some of the photographs are signed (and all that are dated are dated 1915): those of Sarah Edwards, J. Humbird Duffy, Ethel Davies, Elsa Rendel, Isabel Randolph, and Helen Gleason. A search of many of these and other names reveal that they had careers in vaudeville or theatre, but eventually worked in Hollywood on the big screen. All photographs are at least 4" x 4" or so, and most are larger. There are a few wonderful images of whole theatre troupes in full costume. A great piece of pre-cinema performing arts, with a strong local focus. Good.

1920's edition of My BOOKHOUSE THE LATCH KEY by Olive Beaupre Miller. This is a one of a kind book. Here's what i know: A few years ago I was rummaging through an old barn at an estate sale. The barn was packed so full, there was barely still a walk space through it. Full of antiques and treasures of the past. After about 3 hours and quite a struggle I finally made it to the back. The back was full of ornate antique cabinets and furniture. One of the older dressers had several books inside. I love older books and believe in the near future printed books will definitely be a thing of the past. I was able to purchase this and a few others that day. It wasn't until I got home that I opened them. This book had been carved out by a gentleman and inscribed to his son as a gift. The inscription reads: 7/2/28 To: Allen Jr Always Keep Close By You Love Always, Pappy Allen The penmanship isn't the best so forgive me if you read a letter or two differently than i have. I have tried to research what type of gun it may have held, unfortunately it was not still in the book. Someone more educated on older firearms than I am may be able to figure it out. I measured the carving and the measurements are approximately: Length of barrel- 4 1/2" Width of barrel- 3/4" Barrel to End of Stock- 3" Depth of carving: 1" It clearly had a hammer. If you need more measurements message me exactly what you are needing. Carving goes from first cover page to page 266. Besides the obvious carving, the book is in good condition. The cover has been poked repeatedly with something? and has a few small tears. Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]
