The woman in the album was a school teacher in the 1920s for a learning for the blind school in Lansing, Michigan. The school was built in 1912 by the architect Edwyn Boyd and is pictured in the album. Several photographs show the young blind children playing outside or pictured with her and the other teachers. There are also some farming photographs with the kids in them, so it is likely the school has an agricultural element or trip for the children. There is a photograph of her and the other school teachers, captioned, "School mams". Another photo shows a young African American boy as the schools first African American recruit though the captioned photographs of him are a product of the time. This being said, there are images of black face in the album from a school class dressing up as "minstrels" for a performance. She has many photographs of what is captioned "Hall School" in Grand Rapids, Michigan and it is likely she also taught there for a stint. 1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

The pictures span from visiting bears at the zoo to capturing photographs of animals in their natural habitat. Multiple bears from different zoos are photographed, one of which shows a zookeeper next to a small baby black bear. The album has candid captures of people during their daily lives in Denver include shots of parades, the line for entering a racetrack, groups of people ice skating in the snow, and boating docks with people swimming in summer. Well composed landscapes of Colorado rivers, mountains, and the city are seen in the album, showing just how small but developed Denver was in the 1920s. Angelina W. Grimke (1880-1958)
Boston: The Cornhill Company, (1920). 98, [6, (blank)]pp. First Edition. Sm. 8vo. Quarter cloth and gilt-lettered papered boards. Spine gilt dulled and a small crease at the head; faint rubbing at head and tail of spine and to upper cover; some foxing to end leaves. Very good. Angelina W. Grimké (1880-1958) was an African-American female poet and reclusive celibate lesbian who was born into the noted biracial Grimké family, with its strong social and community connections to South Carolina and Boston. Grimké's Rachel is widely accepted to be the first play written by, published for, and stage-produced by an African-American woman. Some critics have called the play unabashed anti-racist propaganda, others have described it as semi-autobiographical, with strong parallels to Grimké's own life. With the support of the NAACP, the play was first staged in Washington, D.C., and shortly thereafter in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A three-act drama, Rachel is a tale of racism, of Northern prejudice and its vile effects. Set in an unnamed northern American city, between 1900 and 1910, the drama tells the story of the struggles of a young college-educated black woman who has adopted a black child. When ugly racism comes into the young boy's life, the horror of the experience causes unending nightmares for the child, and relentless mental anguish for Rachel. As a result, she forswears marriage and motherhood, yet vows to help care for black children everywhere. The play ends with Rachel unable to fight against racism, its oppressiveness creating within her an insurmountable sense of futili … [Click Below for Full Description]

Heiderich, Friedrich
München und Wiesbaden: J. F. Bergmann, 1920. First edition. Softcover. g to vg. Duodecimo. 16pp. booklet, 15 plates. Original slipcase with decorative stiff wraps and black lettering on pasted down label of cover, containing a booklet and 15 plates. The brain-scull-topography depicted in this publication are photographs taken with a Zeiss Protar Lens. The images represent models which where produced during examination. They were molded from compounds or gained by plastic reconstruction when unable to be dissected. The models are true-to-life, about one quarter of the natural size of the objects, and are best viewed with a Zeiss Lens Stereoscope. A regular prism stereoscope produces a slightly exaggerated depth. Stereoscopic pictures are better suited to illustrate form and positioning of complicated structures than regular photographs, they are true-to-life, not schematized. The enclosed booklet provides a description of the objects photographed and is illustrated with three in-text drawings. The fifteen plates (5 1/4 x 7"), stereoscopic photographs (2 3/4 x 5") pasted down, depict various parts of the dissected head with detailed printed descriptions for each object. Text in German. Slipcase with wear along edges, small chips and minor fraying. Spine partially cracked at front joint. Slipcase rubbed with light staining to cover label. Booklet with light foxing to covers. Light foxing to plates, not affecting images. Overall in good, photographs in very good condition.

[Mexican Manuscript Cookbook]: Sanchez, Maria Luisa
[Puebla, Mexico, 1920. [164]pp. In Spanish. Contemporary three-quarter red cloth and paper-covered boards, gilt titles on front board. Rear joint separated, mild wear and soiling. Large bookseller label on front pastedown, binding broken after first text leaf and at rear hinge, textblock separated, one leaf detached. Good. A neatly-written and diverse Mexican manuscript cookbook kept by Maria Luisa Sanchez, a young female student at the "Escuela de pequeñas industrias del estado de Puebla" [Pueblo School of Small Industries]. Sanchez has written her name on the initial page, where she also indicates that she is attending "Cocina" class. The schools of "pequeñas industrias" were intended for girls who, not having access to the boys' schools, were given a chance to attend institutions where they learned technical abilities that were more "suited" or "appropriate" for women, such as cooking and sewing. Sanchez records a variety of Mexican chicken, fish, pork and beef-based recipes, along with egg-based dishes, and desserts. She starts with "Sopa Casera" (a traditional chicken soup), "Huevos Rellenos" (deviled eggs), "Huachinango en Salsa Exelsior" (red snapper in an excellent sauce), "Pollo Saratoga," and also records details for making "Asado Economico" (cheap roast), "Adobo de pollo" (Adobo chicken), "Budin de Carne" (beef pudding), "Chorizos estilo Español" (Spanish-style chorizo), and dozens more dishes. She often includes the "modo de hacerlo" ["the way to do it"] following her list of ingredients. Besides traditional Mexican dinner fare, Sanchez includes several dess … [Click Below for Full Description]

WATROUS family
Connecticut / New Jersey / New York, 1920. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 7". Stapled grey paper wrappers. Contains 80 black and white gelatin silver, cyanotype, or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 4" with captions. Some chips with edgewear thus a very good album with near fine lightly sunned photographs. A family photo album from 1906 through to the mid-1920s from various places in Connecticut. The album is a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Chas B. Watrous from Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Bassett with the date, Feb 25, 1908 and "Congratulations" written on the front. The photographs mostly focus on the children of Charles and Annie Watrous. They have three children, Ruth, Miriam, and Herbert but Ruth has the most pictures with little captions under each one such as "Be jabbers," "I'm mad," and "Goo bye!" Ruth is seen in photos from almost every year between 1906 and 1920 in the album while her brother Herbert has a much smaller amount of photos. Miriam is only seen in one picture but this is probably due to the fact that she passed away at the age of three. There are also pictures of the extended family, one of which shows all the women wearing large and extravagant hats and other shows the women in the family all playing croquet. The family moves a couple times to different places in Connecticut such as Thomaston and Plymouth in Litchfield and Niantic in East Lyme. Several pictures are captioned with the locations and dates of when the Watrous family settled into their new homes. The album also includes pictures from Johnson's mountains in New Jersey and East River i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contains 21 gelatin silver sepia toned photographs measuring between 5" x 3" and 5" x 3.5" without captions, and 146 real photograph postcards. A loss of the spine with modest chipping and some tears on the pages, thus good. A collection of photographs and postcards depicting scenes from various places in and around Great Britain including: Gloucestershire, London, Wales, Glendalough, Belfast, and more. Most of the postcards are real photograph post cards featuring vast landscapes and people. One of the post cards shows a large ornate building, "New City Hall, Belfast". Another shows crowds of people walking around on a busy street in London. Many of the postcards are from Valentine & Sons, a printing company that grew to be Scotland's leading manufacturer of picture postcards. Most of their postcards were real photograph cards numbered on the front in hand, which sometimes made the figures illegible. Some of the postcards have also been handpainted. The sepia photographs feature some people at a church, boats, and locations in a forest. An extensive collection of real photograph post cards and pictures circa 1920s. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

The "author's apology" issue--one of 500 copies of the third printing of the first edition, signed by the author on a leaf tipped in before the title page, printed with his photograph and a note of thanks to the members of American Booksellers Association. A very good copy, tight and unmarked. The fault of note a shallow dampstain at the bottom edge of the rear board. The gilt lettering on the spine is dulled by time but intact, unworn. There are two tiny tears (about 3 millimeters) to the cloth at the head of the spine, just from being pulled off the shelf. But this copy was probably never read. No jacket is present. It's sometimes speculated that this issue was presented without one. The only "signed limited edition" of Fitzgerald's whole career--the signature's authenticity will never be in question. [Mexican Manuscript Cookbook]: Madrid, Lucila
[Puebla, Mexico, 1920. [56]pp. In Spanish. Printed wrappers notebook. Minor wear. Some gatherings sprung. Good condition. A wonderful collection of Mexican food recipes compiled by Lucila Madrid, a fledgling cook in Puebla, Mexico. Madrid uses a school notebook titled "La Tarjeta" and signs her name on the front cover. In the notebook, Madrid records ingredients and "preparacion" instructions for a plethora of Mexican dishes, starting with "Huevos a la Mexicana," "Ninos envueltos," and "Consome Renbi," and encompassing cabbage and cucumber salad, fruit salad, marmalades, desserts ("Gelatina de Leche," "Atole de fresas," and "Molletes de Santa Clara"), dishes now familiar to American palates ("Tamales de mole" and "Salsa general"), and more. Madrid even includes instructions for making a few different types of wine: "Vino de ciruela" (plum wine), "Vino de Piña" (pineapple wine), "Vino de Durazno" (peach wine), and "Vino de Capulin" (cocoon wine). In the last two entries in the volume, Madrid records the recipes for a cocktail (made of habanero, grenadine, cinzano, and lemon juice) and an herbal tea called "Te compuesto." Near the end, in addition to the recipes, Madrid has devoted four-and-a-half pages to writing out a list of "Principales terminos de cocina" in dictionary style. This tends to indicate that she may have been a culinary student, or at the very least a young cook learning her way around the kitchen. An interesting and informative collection of early-20th-century recipes from central Mexico.
