1920. Grasse, the world’s perfume capital, is an idyllic town that sits on the French Riviera in the hills north of Cannes. The city is best known for its prospering perfume industry which began in the late 18th century. Grasse today houses the Musee International De La Perfume in its town center, with large perfumeries such as Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard offering tours of their production sites. Grasse, the "Cite du Calme, Des Fleurs et Des Parfumes" (city of calm, flowers and perfumes) appears as a lush garden, where an elegantly dressed woman and her accompanying dog can be observed enjoying a book amongst the floral environment. In the background, the city of Grasse quaintly sits on a blue mountainside, beautifully depicting both the luxury and simplicity that the town has to offer. This French travel poster was sponsored by the Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer (French National Railway company). The company was founded in 1938 and operates the rail traffic along Monaco, including the TGV, France’s high-speed railway. 1920. This China-Rossi poster is an Italian liqueur advertisement. In the center of the image, a woman is galloping on a horse, using a bottle of the sweet China- Rossi as her whip. The text Elixir, Tonico (Tonic) and Ricostituente (Medicine) illustrated on the poster indicate that the liqueur is a digestive and meant to have health benefits. The bottom half of the poster reads "Fratelli (Brothers) Rossi Asiago", the producer of the liqueur, and the text reading "Succursale in Piove di Sacco" can be translated to "the Piove di Sacco branch", which was the company’s Padova-based location where the distribution was likely handled for this product. China Rossi, is an Italian Liqueur produced by Rossi D’ Asiago. The Liqueur is known for its composition of various herbs and aromatic essences as well as its sweet taste. The term ‘China’ refers to a tree in South America called "China Calissaia", whose bark was an ingredient originally used by the Chinese as a digestive. TENNANT, STEPHEN
1920. Bright and decorative Illustrated Autograph Letter Signed, "Stephen." "Where are you? Your Balm is so very nice new - you will be jealous - When will you come out here? Juliet.does not want to see my Roses. Love to you, Stephen." On pink printed address stationery, Tennant wrote to a neighbor who was a friend of photographer and designer Cecil Beaton. Beaton and Tennant belonged to an upper class social set of the 1920's and 30's called "Bright Young People," popularized in Evelyn Waugh's novel, "Brideshead Revisited." The 8 x 10 inch artwork is drawn with water color and outlined in ink. Tennant's floral decoration echoes the reference to the roses of his garden and is similar to his water color and ink drawing, "The Carthganian Rose." The letter measures 8 x 10 inches and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Weyhe, New York, 1920. Olive green folding wraps, surrounding 17 signed prints. One American copy found, in the Spencer Museum of Art. He is said to have been active in New York City in the early 1920s, which may explain Weyhe publishing these prints for him portfolio-style. He also exhibited in Worcester in 1920 at the annual exhibition there. Very little can be found out about this artist, but the artwork is accomplished and pleasing. KOUSSEVITZKY, Serge 1874-1951
Ca. 1920. 199 x 149 mm. In pencil on wove paper. Slightly worn and creased; minor loss to upper left blank corner. "[Koussevitzky] was one of three glamorous iconic maestros who dominated American symphonic culture after World War I. Though he never attained the national renown of Arturo Toscanini or Leopold Stokowski, he far surpassed both as an influential advocate of American music. And neither Toscanini nor Stokowski left as tangible a legacy as Koussevitzky's Tanglewood. Having entered the Moscow Philharmonic Music School at 14, he chose the double bass as one of three instruments for which open scholarships were available. He joined the double basses of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra six years later, and began touring as a double bass virtuoso two years after that... [He] came to the United States in 1924 to suceed Pierre Monteux as conductor of the Boston SO... The capstone of Koussevitzky's mission was the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. Dixon, Maynard
[San Francisco], 1920. 74 leaves [46 cm x 39 cm] of handmade paper. The majority of the leaves have three uniform holes at the left. The portfolio contains 75 entries (28 are duplicates), as well as the title page, on handmade paper. All entries are in Dixon's distinctive hand, and include the title, size, date, and sometimes the location and disposition of the work. The cover is titled Paintings by Maynard Dixon, along with his distinctive Thunderbird symbol outlined in a circle. The entries were accompanied by original photographs done by noted San Francisco photographer Gabriel Moulin. Most of the Moulin photographs have been removed but five still remain. These photographs [24 cm x 17 cm] contain either Edith Hamlin's stamp or Gabriel Moulin's (and in many cases some pencil annotations, probably by Hamlin). The photographed paintings are: 'The Trading Post' - 'Corral Dust' - 'Camp in the Mountains' - 'Home Pastures' - 'The Old Cow Town'.Among the numerous entries are murals for Anita Baldwin's Indian Room and Jinks Room for her Arcadia home, The Old Trading Post, Corral Dust, Home Pastures, Pony Boy, Blackfeet Historians, Camp in the Mountains, The Navajos, The Story Tellers, From Range to Range, What an Indian Thinks, Cattle Country, Home of the Half-Breed, among others.A number of works are from his legendary 1917 trip to Montana. Dixon probably intended the portfolio as a document he could show prospective clients and for museum and gallery exhibitions. Although most of the photographs have been removed by Dixon or his third wife, Edith Hamlin, there is information … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Grimke, Angelina W.
Boston: The Cornhill Company, 1920. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing. Bound in publisher's brown paper covered boards over black cloth spine, stamped in gilt. Near Fine. Spine cloth faded with titles on spine mostly illegible. Light soiling. Front inner hinge repaired, small stray mark to front free endpaper. Light offsetting to rear blank sheets from four-leaf clover laid in. Rachel is generally accepted as the first published and produced play by an African American woman; it originally ran in 1916 at Myrtill Miner Normal School in Washington, D.C. The playwright was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Some of her work suggests she may have been a lesbian, with much stronger undertones found in her unpublished poems sparking speculation, implying she may have lived a life of "personal and creative" suppression.[Attributes: First Edition]

Original sealing paper backing, largely chipped and torn, yet unopened, with the photographer's label "R.H. LeSesne, Frame Department, Daytona Florida" affixed at the bottom edge. A few slight blemishes to the frame surface; otherwise, a very good example. Richard Habersham LeSesne, 1880 - 1948, was born in Clarkesville, Habersham County, Georgia and settled in Daytona, Florida by 1908,when he purchased the photographic studio of Henry Kaiser; he died there in 1946. His reputation as a photographer is primarily tied to the Daytona Beach Speedway where he documented the land speed record attempts from the 1920s through the 1930s. However, as Daytona Beach gained as a winter destination for those further north wanting warmer climes, he seemed to have established a market for his local landscapes, using the Orotone, or as he named them, Halberle-tones, the process made famous by Edward S. Curtis. In keeping with the similarity of appearance, LeSesne used the same "bat-wing" frames that Curtis popularized.
