RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] LE PRADE, Ruth (editor);
Upton Sinclair, 1920. Poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th century poets including Witter Bynner, Max Eastman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Carl Sandburg, Siegfried Sassoon, Horace Traubel, and Israel Zangwill, many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword, along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw (who states: "Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs"). An interesting pair of copies inscribed to Gardner (1884-1968), acclaimed stage actress and the first actress to form her own production company. Moved by his circumstances and deeply influenced by his speeches, she visited him in prison in 1920, bringing him an autographed photo and beginning a correspondence that would last through the mid-1920's. In a December 21, 1920 letter, she writes: "Let me tell you that I was surprised to find my emotional self somewhat unaffected while I listened to you talk. I know the reason now. It is the same with you as it was with Epicetus, prison walls cannot confine the spirit -- the mind is ever free. So, in a way, I did not feel your plight as keenly as I would that of another who had little vision, little intelligence, little understanding about his body being so small a part of the real him that his confinement was of the physical order only." While the "special edition" of 500, with signed bookplate by Debs, appears with some frequency, inscribed copies of Debs and the Poets are genuinely uncommon. Two octavo volumes (18.75cm); maroon cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; [ii] … [Click Below for Full Description]

Minor toning, repair to corners where previously stapled affecting two or three letters, old folds. „Wir denken immer nur daran, wie wir uns gegen Nichtärzte welche analysiren wollen schützen können und vergaßen dabei, daß wir schutzlos gegen die nicht minder unwissenden und gewissenlosen Ärzte sind , die anlaysiren, ohne es gelernt zu haben"A letter from Freud toDr. Emil Oberholzer—his patient and colleague—regarding pressing professional matters"Honored, dear Colleague." Freud begins. "The evaluation of the motives which constrained you in not to attend our congress in the Hague are, of course, entirely your business. I can only say that we badly missed you all, and that, because of your absence, the Swiss group, represented almost entirely by Dr. Pfister, was very obliging towards the Dutch and English groups."The 6th International Psychoanalytical Congress took place inThe Hague in September of 1920. It was there that Freud gave his paper "Supplements to the Theory of Dreams," and seemingly lobbied for the newly-formed International Journal of Psycho-Analysis to become the standard in the field, and had been relying on Oberholzer's support. The letter then goes on to discuss how German membership will be handled moving forward, and how experienced psychoanalysts must protect themselves and their reputations against"unscrupulous physicians who want to analyze without having learned."Oberholzer was an early prop … [Click Below for Full Description]

china: 1920. light bumped at extremities - complete no missing pictures! Condition A. Commercial souvenir album of 120 gelatin silver prints, each 4 1/4 x 2 3/4 in., of Peking, with printed captions identifying the subjects, Unique insights into China nearly 100 years back The sensational photo collection shows scenes from ancient China that hardly exist today: free from the glossy polish of today's mass tourism, authentic and historically of the highest importance. I saw the same copy of this album at Book Store for rare books in Boston USA, where its offered on the Price: $4,850.00 In some photos you can literally feel them - the inner turmoil of a country that, like many other European countries, had fallen into a kind of slow motion of world events after the First World War. Everything seemed possible. A wide variety of intellectual and political forces fought for power after the end of the empire. The 120 photos in this rare volume take you on a journey back in time to China in the 1920s and 30s. The photos are a testimony of the old China, which was partly wiped out during the 20th century. In addition to today's world-famous sights such as the Temple of Heaven, the Altar of Heaven, the Forbidden City, the Winter and Summer Palace, the Monastery of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Sha Tin, the Pagoda of Six Harmonies, the Lama Temple, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall of China, the photos also show street scenes and details that were destroyed by the Cultural Revolution. This book is intended for sinologists, architects and photo enthusiasts.

Minimal rubbing to corners, still an an exceptionally fine example of a very rare edition. Ronald Egerton Balfour (1896-1941). The work of this illustrator is not as well-known as it should be - most likely because this 1920 edition of the Rubáiyát is his sole major work according to a recent feature in Book & Magazine Collector. The illustrations were produced when he was just twenty-four years old and while the drawing can be considered uncertain in places, they are really splendid examples of the post-Beardsley and later Alastair style, owing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis, Sinclair
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Howe, 1920 First edition with "49" perfect, "54" slightly battered and "y" in "may" imperfect. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Lewis on the front endpaper. Publisher's dark blue cloth, stamped in orange. About near fine, with some light wear to the spine ends, light rubbing, and a slight lean to the spine. Pastore 7. Main Street is the novel that established Sinclair Lewis' literary reputation and was his first commercial success. Inspired by Lewis' childhood in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, it criticizes romantic notions of small town life in the United States. Specifically, Main Street tells the story of Carol Kennicott, who moves to Gopher Prairie, a fictional, sleepy town that the heroine pledges to modernize and rejuvenate in spite of the residents' resistance. In his preface, Lewis explains that Gopher Prairie is meant to symbolize all small American towns, writing that "Its Main Street is the continuation of Main Streets everywhere. The story would be the same in Ohio or Montana, in Kansas or Kentucky or Illinois, and not very differently would it be told Up York State or in the Carolina hills." Notably, Main Street is a satire not only on the ignorant simplicity of small town living but on the superficial intellectualism of those who criticize it. Similarly, its successor, Babbitt (1922), parodies urban life in America in the 1920s.. Signed by Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

André Balland, 1920. Encre, gouache blanche. Papier blanc légèrement glacé. DESSIN ORIGINAL A L'ENCRE signé Foujita.

John Wisden
This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.
