O'Neill, Eugene
Boni and Liveright, New York, 1920. First edition of O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the playwright on the front free endpaper, "To Charles One of the Best Eugene O'Neill." In near fine condition. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. Eugene O'Neill's first full-length work to be staged, Beyond the Horizon won the 1920 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. "Theater historians point to O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon, which debuted in 1920, as the first native American tragedy. That play emerged from O'Neill's association with the Provincetown Players, one of many so-called 'little theaters' that developed in the 1910s to provide alternative fare to commercial drama of the time" (Playwrights in America, 2015). Holmes, Oliver Wendell
November 20, 1920. Autograph letter signed and entirely in the hand of Oliver Wendell Holmes on Supreme Court letterhead. Dated November 20th 1920, the letter reads, "Mr. Barnes called last Evening and delivered to me the handsome Copy of your amended essay. In his presence I established in my shelves, its place being by the side of a fine edition of my much admired Malthus. Mr. Barnes gave a charming account of you and I enjoyed his call very much - none the less that he had been received at any earlier moment with some suspicion as an unknown man with a bag. I hardly know which gives me the greater pleasure - your kind estimate of my work or the admirable quality of yours. On both grounds I am very much obliged to you and am Sincerely yours, O.W. Holmes." Holmes' legal philosophy was strongly influenced by the political and economic observations of Thomas Robert Malthus, powerfully expressed in his best-known work An Essay on the Principle of Population, published in 1798. Matted and framed with a drawing of Holmes. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 12 inches. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1902 to 1932, and as Acting Chief Justice of the United States January-February 1930. Noted for his long service, his concise and pithy opinions and his deference to the decisions of elected legislatures, he is one of the most widely cited United States Supreme Court justices in history, particularly for his "clear and present danger" opinion for a unanimous Court in the 1919 case … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hodgson, William Hope
London Holden and Hardingham 1920 - 1921. All eight cheap editions published shortly after Hodgson's death, in their original dust jackets, all illustrated in the same style and using the same colour palette. An important edition, as aside from a few magazine appearances Hodgson would not be in print again until his resurrection by Arkham House in the 1940s. Three are bound in cloth, all from 1920, with the later five in cheaper paper boards. The bindings are generally firm, the boards mostly clean with only minor bumping and rubbing, some with varying degrees of fading, Captain Gault has fared slightly worse than the other seven with loss to the paper at the bottom of the front board and a knock to the rear board. The text blocks are age browned and slightly dusty, all have the same bookseller's label to the front pastedown. The dust jackets are mostly slightly grubby with minor loss and short closed tears, some have small tape repairs or tape burns from old repairs to the reverse, a few have more significant loss and rubbing and two are substantially complete. A very rare complete set of Hodgson's weird, fantastic supernatural and nautical novels and short story collections, which to judge by the uniformity of condition and the bookseller's labels may well have been together since first purchased. Photography]: [Missionaries]: [Japan
[ca. 1920-1931]: [Kyushu, Japan]. Oblong 4to. String-tied commecial album; black boards. Contains 57 gelatin-silver prints (of various sizes, including 8" by 10", 7.5" by 5", and smaller), most of which are adhesive-mounted (with several loose), plus 11 postcards depicting Kyushu Lutheran churches, and one bookmark. One photograph apparently perished; several others loosening from pages. Else apparently complete.Album edges moderately worn; one photo missing a chunk at edge. Most are lightly toned, but overall clean. Very good or better. Very good +. Well-assembled photo album compiled by an American Lutheran missionary to Japan, whose face appears consistently in the majority of the photographs. The island of Kyushu is home to several Lutheran schools and churches, including the Kyushu Gakuin (Kyushu Lutheran College), and the Janice James School, both of which are pictured here (having recently been built in the early 1900's). The Kyushu Lutheran mission was founded in 1893 by American missionaries; within several years they began building churches under the supervision of one Charles Lafayette Brown (1874-1921), and presumably the subjects pictured here with members of that particualr mission. The album features posed group photographs of large congregations - as large as roughly 150 - captioned with date and location in cities including Kurume, Kamamoto, and Saga; additionally included are many images of church services in progress, plus several family portraits of church members. While Christianity began to spread when Japan phased out its isolationist policies in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Royersford, Pennsylvania, 1920. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong small octavo. Measuring 10" x 7". Black cloth over flexible paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 111 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7", with captions. Some pages detached but present, chips and tears very good with near fine photographs. A Pennsylvania woman's photo album depicting her school and home life beginning in 1917 through to around 1920. A caption on one of the photos reads "our home at Royersford." Some of the photos are out of order and begin with a 1919 graduation ceremony. The first photo is of a woman named Florence in her graduation cap and gown holding a diploma posed in a garden. Other graduates are seen on the following page with a caption that reads, "elocution graduates." Women are seen posed around a family home, laughing, and having a lovely time together. One photo shows three women posed together that reads, "dance of the rail fence;" another photo from this series reads, "three in a row - never catch a bo." The album shows a wedding, beach vacations, and girls climbing trees. One of the photos show two girls posed next to a sign that reads "The Bible Institute Colportage Assn. A New Biblical Study! Spiritism and the Fallen Angels." The final pages show a summer camp the woman worked, including images of uniformed girls, the mess hall, tents, and counselors. A modest but nice collection of photos depicting a young woman's life in Pennsylvania.

Eskildsen, John Peter. [Texas]
[McAllen, Tx, 1920. Very good.. Ten original photographs, each 5 x 7 inches. Light wear at edges. Captioned in negative. Contemporary pencil initials on versos. A rare group of ten original photographs by early 20th-century Texas photographer John Peter Esklidsen, who worked in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1910s and 1920s. The photographs present here were commercially produced by the Eskildsen Studio of McAllen, Texas, and perfectly showcase the boomtown flavor of the Valley in the 1920s. They show bountiful fields of cabbage, alfalfa, and onions (and in one case, the African American laborers who made it all possible), a grapefruit tree bent to the ground under the weight of its abundant fruit, fields of grass-fed pigs and dairy cattle, a newly built farm house captioned "New Eden," and a major irrigation canal. The images are titled in the negatives as follows: 1. Grapefruit in the Dr. Kalbfleisch Orchard. 2. A Magic Valley Cabbage Field. 3. 100 Rhodes-Grass Raised Duroc-Jerseys in the Bruce Young Farm. San Juan Tex. 4. Irrigating Cabbage and Onions in the Valley. 5. Mercedes. Main Canal. 6. Llano Grand Lake and Stewart Club House. 7. 5th Cutting Alfalfa on the Johnson Farm, June 17, '20. 8. Dairy Herd in Sudan Grass - Rio Grande Valley. 9. A Farm in the Valley. 10. "New Eden" - The 6 Months Old Lentz Farm House. We locate a few individual prints by Eskildsen in the photo collections of UT Rio Grande Valley and SMU, none present here.

Arp, Hans
Druck von Otto von Holten, 1920. Erstausgabe. Rarissimum. Referenz: Wilpert/Gühring 2 - Hagenbach 2 - Arntz. This class was a blend of science and art, which is reflected in the notebook Marjorie Bullock used for this class. The notebook consists of notes on the scientific names of each part of the body as well as their shape and how they are connected to the surrounding tissue and limbs. Predominantly focuses on bones and musculature, all intricately drawn in full detail with all parts identified. Accompanying these notes are drawing (done in black and green ink) exemplifying these bodily features. While there are studies done of the entire body, most are smaller sections, such as "the skull", "Back view of Trunk", and "Outer view of the upper Limb". There are approximately 44 pages of drawings contained within the notebook. Additionally 4 pages of pencil drawings done on tissue paper. Annotated on the drawings are page numbers, that most likely correspond to what every text book she was using as reference to draw from. TIMLIN, William M.
[n.p.]: , 1920. A Wonderfully Ethereal Watercolor from the Master of Children's Fantasy Illustrators TIMLIN, William M. "The Fairy Walk." Original pen, ink and watercolor drawing, titled on lower left hand corner, signed on lower right hand corner and marked with Timlin's owl device. Image size: 20 5/8 x 12 1/2 inches: 525 x 320mm.Matted, framed and glazed. William M. Timlin ranks alongside Dulac, Rackam, and Pogany as one of the greatest children's fantasy illustrators, despite his having published only one book in his lifetime (The Ship that Sailed to Mars, 1923). He died before his second great work, The Building of a Fairy City could be completed. The Fairy Walk depicts an elegant young lady in conversation with an ethereal figure sitting on a fence and holding onto a branch of a tree, observed by four ravens and a trio of mischievous looking goblins. It is quite possible that this drawing is a finished watercolor for The Building of a Fairy City. It is beautifully executed and very large, drawn with finesse and detail, indicative of an important work. Even though this drawing is dated 1920, three years before The Ship that Sailed to Mars was published, Timlin had been working on drawings for The Building of a Fairy City for many years previous to the publication of his first book. William Mitcheson Timlin (11 April 1892 - 1943) was an architect and illustrator. He was born in Ashington, Northumberland, the son of a colliery foreman. He showed talent for drawing at Morpeth Grammar School, and received a scholarship to the Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle. In 1912, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking.
