Paris-Librairie Paul Ollendorf, 1920. Book. Eight volumes half bound in leather with marble paper-covered boards and gilt lettering. Romain Rolland (1866-1944), French dramatist, essayist, art historian and novelist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. He was a lifelong pacifist, his book, Au-dessus de la Melee was a protest written in 1915. He was influenced by Indian philosophy and was a supporter of Gandhi, whom he met in 1931. Jean-Chrisophe was a novel in ten volumes published between 1904-12. It is usually broken up into sections; the first four volumes grouped as Jean-Christophe, the next three as Jean-Christophe a Paris and the final three as La Fin du Voyage. It tells the life story of Jean-Christophe Krafft, a highly talented musician and composer (a figureinspired by Beethoven). Although it is Jean-Christophe's story, Rolland, in imitation of Tolstoy periodically moves away from his hero to temporarily explore some other character and also to discourse on various subjects such as art, social change or feminism. Please note that this set only contains the first eight volumes and the final two volumes of La Fin du Voyage are missing. This book was previously owned by Ronald Lindsayand contains his bookplate. Excellent condition . Reynaldo Luza (1893-1978), pre-eminent fashion artist, was born in Lima, Peru. He began training as an architect at the University of Louvain, Belgium, but returned to Peru at the outbreak of World War I, where he changed his studies from architecture to art. In 1918 he came to the United States, where he earned his living by contributing drawings to several fashion publications, principally VOGUE, HARPERS BAZAAR, and VANITY FAIR. In 1921 he joined HARPERS BAZAAR as the principal fashion artist, a position he was to hold for 27 years. He divided his time between New York, Paris and London, working closely with all of the leading fashion designers of the times--Poiret, Patou, Lelong, Paquin, Douillet, Doucet, Cheruit, Worth, Drecoll, Callot Soeurs, Redfern, Martial et Amand, Premet, Reboux, Chanel, Vionnet, Molyneaux, Schiaparelli, Hartnell, Steibel, and Balenciaga, among others. In 1940 Luza made New York his principal base, where, over the next few years, he continued his activities at Harpers as well as creating fabric and furniture designs, and the costumes for the movie "The Bridge of San Luis Rey". This is the London, September 1920 Edition - a handsome trade edition, hardcover book of poetry illustrated by Harry Clarke and compiled by L D'O Walters. (1920 on the title page and First Published September 1920 on the copyright page) . The covers are a spring green cloth with decorative border in bright gilt on the front cover and gilt titles on the spine. The binding is tight, corners and spine straight. There is a faint hint of wear at the tips of the corners. Very clean. Well cared for. The end papers are also a soft spring green. There is a former owner gift note and date on the front free end paper. There are no other marks or writing. There is a slight raise to the cloth on the rear end paper possibly from the removal of a tiny price or bookstore label. The interior pages are crisp and clean. There are 24 full page illustrations, 12 in color, including the frontispiece, and 12 in black ink on a beige tone background. The half title page has a large line drawing in black and white. There are numerous black ink drawings within the text and as tailpieces (chapter end decorative drawings) . The Introduction is by Harold Monro. Poets - Belloc, Brooke, Chesterton, De la Mare, Yeats and many more. The Clarke illustratio ns are fantastical and serious, many in plentiful pastels. ; 4to; 128 pages .

This is a cut-and-paste effort by France, with emendations, cross-outs, etc., showing how carefully he worked and reworked his speech. Each leaf mounted on tabs and bound in 3/4 red morocco by Stroubants, binding worn but manuscript fine. Inserted is a hand-written notation that this manuscript is from the Library of Mrs. Rita Lydis of Washington Square Village, sold at Anderson Galleries in 1920. France, a Nobel Laureate (1921), used his scholarship and knowledge of the French Revolution to create one of the best novels about the Revolution, LES DIEUX ONT SOIFS, published in 1912.

Anita Loos and John Emerson collaborated on many film projects in the 20s, including a film adaptation of LoosÕ stage play Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as well as helping to launch the acting career of Douglas Fairbanks in a series of films (1916-17) written by Loos and directed by Emerson. Their youngest sister Alix, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, was born only in 1872.
